Longtime radio host dies at 96

Oscar Brand holds record for program By J oe N i k i c Great Neck resident Oscar Brand, a folk singer and songwriter who was known for hosting the longest-running singlehost radio show in history, died on Friday. He was 96. Brand’s manager, Doug Yeager, told The New York Times that he died of pneumonia at his home in Great Neck. Yeager told The Times that Brand was “one of the strongest, most indefatigable men I’ve ever known.” “At 90 years old, I’d call and I’d say, ‘Oscar, where are you?’” he said, and Brand replied, “I’m up in the tree, cutting some limbs.’’ Brand was born on Feb. 7, 1920 in Winnipeg. According to The Times, his family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, when he was seven, later moved to Chicago and then settled in Brooklyn, where the family was seeking treatment for Brand, who was born without a Continued on Page 24

Point’s employees rank 2nd in salaries Village’s 12 workers earned an average of $83,333 last year: report By J oe N i k i c On top of its police force ranking as the highest paid department of any municipality in the state, the Village of Kings Point also had the second highest paid general employees of
any municipality. According to a report released by the Empire Center for Public Policy, the village’s 16 general employees earn an average of $83,233 per year. “The residents of the Village of Kings Point are served by capable professionals with impeccable credentials and vast experience in their respective disciplines,” said Mayor Michael Kalnick. “Their hard work and
dedication to public service help make our village a great place to live.” The Empire Center uses a payroll database of both parttime and full-time employees actively enrolled in the state pension system as of August 2016 to compile its data. The Village of Sands Point ranks first in highest average pay, with its 12 general employees earning an average of $93,652 per year.
In Kings Point, the village building inspector, Richard A. Schilt, earned $140,222 during the 2015-16 fiscal year, according to seethroughny.net, Empire Center’s transparency website that lists municipality payrolls. Michael G.
