Dining Maceo’s Spice & Import Company:

The Flavor of an Island of History

By Kimber Fountain, Photos by Christa Schreckengost The City of Galveston is just over 175 years old, admittedly a rather brief lifespan in the scheme of recorded history, and especially brief when considering that Earth is estimated to have existed for 4.54 billion years. However, during that respectively short amount of time, Galveston and its various residents have witnessed, suffered, endured, thrived, survived, and celebrated enough happenings and happenstance to warrant volumes upon volumes of literary output. The copious amount of books written to immortalize Galveston history are collectively representative of the Island’s uncanny, chameleonic ability to embrace change without hesitation, and its willingness to adopt a new era of identity as soon as the old one is ushered out. And, for each of these eras there has always lingered in the portals of history, names which unabashedly and courageously defined it. Names that ring with the essence of the Island. Names that conjures images of the fierce and fearless entrepreneurial spirit for which Galveston is known. Names that are markers for the pride and invincible nature of the Galveston community. Maceo is one of those names.

In a humble little storefront off Market Street, the current generations of Maceos continue their legacy of influence in an equally delightful, albeit subtler fashion. Their Spice & Import Company is not only a purveyor of fine foods, fresh, natural spices, and original blends, it is quite literally the cornerstone of Island cuisine. Their seafood seasoning is used in restaurants all over the city, infusing Galveston dining with a distinct flavor, the absence of which is often noticed by locals who are accustomed to the delicious familiarity. Concetta Maceo, whose grandfather R.S. Maceo, Sr. opened the shop in 1944, recalls a new restaurant owner whom she assisted. “He was receiving complaints from residents about the way his seafood was seasoned, so I asked him what he was using. When he told me, I told him ‘well, that was your first mistake,’” she says with a smile, in the trademark, matter-of-fact Maceo tone. Then of course she promptly recommended their special blend. “He bought a small amount at first, then called back in a couple of days and ordered a twenty pound box.”

The dynamic impact of their products traces all the way back to the company’s roots, as Maceo Spice & Import Company was originally only a wholesale distributor of bulk spices. When Maceo, Sr.’s son, Ronald, came into the fold he injected his remarkable talents as a restaurateur into the business.

“My dad knows what people want,

he knows what flavors work well together,” Concetta says, “and so he started making blends and selling them to restaurants. People would go to the restaurant and say, ‘Wow! Where can we get this?’ And then they would come to the warehouse and ask how they could purchase it.” The demand for Ronald’s blends continued to grow, thus prompting him to expand his father’s business to include a retail store and eventually, an eatery.

That store has changed locations many times in its seventy years in business; the most memorable one sat at the corner of 25th and Market. “At that time, our current location that we are in now was just a packing house,” Ronald’s daughter remembers. “But after Hurricane Ike took that store, my Dad decided to move the retail store and combine everything into one location - into this one building.”

The Spice & Import Company sells all of their spices in both individual and wholesale amounts, and will also craft special custom blends for a restaurant. Sometimes they will take a restaurant’s preexisting recipe blend and recreate it in bulk. “Of course we keep all of the recipes confidential,” Concetta explains, “but having us make your spices in bulk for you really increases the consistency and efficiency of commercial kitchens.” All of their spices are MSG-free, with no additives or anti-caking agents. “It’s just a pure, quality product,” she continues, and names their specialty as the salt-free blends they offer. Salt intake is a hot-button issue among nutritionists and healthconscious eaters, so the specialty blends allow for a full, savory seasoning without the need for salt.

The “Import” side of Maceo’s Spice & Import Company includes a delectable selection of many exotic and finer foods including olive oil imported from Italy, Red and Black Caviar, gourmet cheeses and meats, and other rare, hard-to-find international cooking essentials. Products from nearly every continent line the shelves, as well as regionally and locally small-batch produced items. Pastas, rice, vinegars, oils, and canned delicacies represent a world tour of luxurious eating.

Lunch at Maceo’s is also an authentic and flavorful affair, with specialty Italian sandwiches like the Sopressata, an Italian salami

with provolone, or the Caprese, with layers of basil, fresh tomatoes, and whole mozzarella. “But if I could only recommend one thing, it would be ‘get the Muffaletta.’” Concetta affirms it is undoubtedly the best, made in the authentic New Orleans style on Italian loaf bread with ham, salami, provolone, and Maceo’s Olive Salad. Then she adds, “And the Tomato Gravy, and our dipping spices.” The dipping spices are available in individual quantities, or for just a little more than the price of a bag, they will serve it up with a loaf of homemade bread and olive oil.

In addition to their regularly offered menu there are also daily specials, most often dependent on whatever Ronald feels like making that day. They have recently, in the vein of traditional New Orleans restaurants, added the regular Monday special of Pork Chops with Red Beans & Rice.

For a while, Maceo’s had significantly reduced their lunch offerings, but fortunately for their loyal following, the spice shop has become once again the perfect out-of-the-way spot for a quiet lunch or an afternoon with close friends. “I want this to be a place where people can relax and enjoy the atmosphere,” Concetta Maceo says.

“This is a great place to do just that.”

Indeed, the juxtaposition of generations on this small little spice shop is undeniable. Just as Ronald pushed the envelope with his father all those years ago, Concetta is once again reimagining the store to appeal to current generations. She has applied for a liquor license, so they will soon be serving beer and wine, and will add imported wines to their inventory. Her ultimate goal is to complete her studies at UTMB and become a Nurse Practitioner, but in the meantime Concetta Maceo keeps the torch burning, and adds her own zest to a family name that has never failed to spice up Island life.

“The Purge” isn’t a horror film series, even though it’s marketed that way; it’s a psychological thriller for young adults of the “Saw” era. Unfortunately for us, DeMonaco has created something that Universal can milk sequels out of for years.

A year after we witnessed the events of the last American purge in 2022, it’s that holiday time again where the government sanctions one 12 hour period out of the year for citizens to purge: kill others without any retribution. Eva (Ejogo) and her daughter Cali (Soul) hide inside their downtown apartment, which is typically safe and secure from the purging outside.

Liz (Kiele Sanchez) and Shane (Gilford) had car trouble on the freeway and are running for their lives. The mysterious Sergeant (Grillo) chooses to help protect the poor and innocent he finds on his way to purge. When various groups pushing their own agendas begin targeting the innocent bystanders, Sergeant becomes their only refuge. ​Since it isn’t a horror film, “The Purge” isn’t as focused on violence as you might expect. Guns are the weapon of choice during the annual purge, and we don’t have as much methodical killing for sport; it’s mostly about numbers. The masks are back, but less goofy and more horror type.

DeMonaco tries to orchestrate different agendas here, which allows for a surprise way out of impossible situations. With five main characters just like a pick-em’-off-horror film, anyone can bite the bullet at any time. The suspense feels more urgent and earned this time around, but we don’t have much development on the characters, we just feel their desperation enough to care about them. ​Ironically, the most suspenseful scene takes place inside Eva’s co-worker’s house, a Mexican family who has had a little too much to drink on the night of the purge. DeMonaco cues the viewer in that something just isn’t right, but unlike the mayhem on the streets, the viewer is in the dark at what that might be. Grillo (“Warrior,” “Captain America: Winter Soldier”) makes a great antihero, and he would make an even better Gambit in the upcoming “X-Men” film, but that’s just my thoughts trailing off in the less interesting segments of “The Purge.”

This sequel seems to have corrected many of the issues in the previous by focusing on social injustices created by the purge; the poor can’t protect themselves while the rich purge in secure,

high fashion.

Final Thought – Lowered expectations will make this sequel far more impressive than the original.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” Starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Keri

Russell, Gary Oldman Grade BThe title is literal; this is an entirely different animal of a film than 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” although it is a direct sequel with only three of the main Apes returning. “Rise” was the introduction to the specifics of Apes, and “Dawn” is nearly all Ape and much fewer humans on screen.

Apes on horseback, anyone? The visuals are jarring and the science fiction volume is turned up quite a few notches. WETA returns for some beautiful visual effects that will certainly be remembered come awards time.

Andy Serkis, who invented a new career when he played Gollum in “Lord of the Rings,” returns once again as Caesar, the leader of the apes. His performance is the highlight of the film.

Ten winters have passed since the virus that mutated the apes in San Francisco backfired on humans and began rapidly infecting the entire planet. Throughout the past two winters, the apes, led by Caesar (Serkis), have not seen a single human. In a colony of what used to be city hall, a group immune to the infection, have survived and are looking to use the energy from a nearby dam to sustain electricity after their fuel runs out. They are

armed with all the weapons and artillery left from FEMA and the military. Caesar will never forget the kindness he was shown by humans, but his fellow apes only know to fear man and their guns. Caesar must walk a fragile line between his people and the humans, who are desperate.

It’s smarter than your average summer blockbuster, for sure. However, I wonder if “Dawn” would stand on its own if the apes were human, and if this was just another territory battle film.

Would “Brokeback Mountain” still be an award winning, unique film if the relationship focus was heterosexual? Are there truly fantastic moments here that make it a great film or just a great Apes film? “Dawn” is equally as engrossing and engaging as “Rise;” no better, no worse. They are, however, different films structurally; they’re two bookends holding the same fluid material between them.

Michael Giacchino’s score for the film was off putting in the beginning, especially with the apes’ non-violent themes. Oldman has so little screen time that his character is never fully flushed out, which feels like a waste of great talent.

Final Thought – Sustains the creativity and intelligence from “Rise.”

“Third Person” Starring Liam Nelson, Olivia Wilde, Mila

Kunis, Adrien Brody. James Franco, Maria Bello, Kim Basinger Grade BOscar winning writer/director Paul Haggis certainly knows how to weave intersecting plot lines and ensembles, as he proved with best picture winner “Crash.” Haggis, who also wrote the script to best picture winner “Million Dollar Baby,” hasn’t had as much success with intermediate films “In the Valley of Elah” (although Tommy Lee Jones did earn an Oscar nod) or forgotten thriller “The Next Three Days.” “Third Person” is his first film in three years, and he returns to the type of cinematic puzzle he is good at, slowly feeding the audience one piece at a time. Although he’s working with another all-star cast, this one isn’t as structurally sound as “Crash” and ends up feeling more like “The Sixth Sense” for the grown up audiences. ​Michael (Nelson) still hears his son saying “watch me” as he desperately tries to finish a new book after a dull absence from the publishing world

and winning the Pulitzer. His wife (Basinger) is at home in mourning and his girlfriend Anna (Wilde) is knocking on his door in Paris with her perfect smile and daddy issues. Julia (Kunis) is desperately trying to win partial custody of her son from ex-husband Rick (Franco) in New York, after she is accused of putting a bag over the child’s head. Scott (Brody) finds himself helping a beautiful stranger in Italy who needs money to retrieve her daughter. ​M. Night Shymalan used red in many of his films as a definitive symbol; “Third Person” isn’t a horror film nor a thriller, but Haggis clues the viewer in on some obvious symbols from the beginning to the end. Water, the color white and the involvement of young children in relationships are the most continuous themes throughout the film. Each scenario takes place in a different part of the world; they are all connected, yet mutually exclusive. It’s not the type of film that demands you try to understand the connection, and Haggis reveals all you need to know without a dramatic climax. ​ ​Where “Crash” seemed ingenious in how it’s pieced together, “Third Person” seems unnecessarily over complicated, almost as if the script was worked on in reverse. The characters and, therefore, the acting isn’t as strong or moving as what we saw in “Crash” (those were people we see in all facets of life, these are not). The subtle mystery of the connections, the characters’ relations and their similarities are the film’s strongest element. “Crash” had a formidable theme and message but “Third Person” never really says anything the audience can take with them as they exit.

Things To Do Nautical Antiques & Tropical Décor: Maritime Memorabilia and Seafaring Sundries

During conversation with Dee he learned that the oldest person to ride the Segway was 93. That did it! “If a 93 year old can do it – so can I! After all, I’m only 70.” He laughed to himself. “What a transformation,” he thought. “Here I am thinking I’m 70 years young now rather than 70 years old.”

And it was easy. In no time at all he was zipping around in the store and then out into the alley for more practice before the tour was on its way.

The only restriction isn’t at the top end. It’s at the bottom. You must be 14 or older to ride. The only people who have not been able to ride are those with balancing issues usually caused by medical problems. On the other hand, those who have good balance but may have walking or other issues like only one good arm, or Down’s Syndrome, have successfully learned how to ride and control the Segway.

A good example of this is the owner of SegCity, Ray Sustala, who had hip replacement surgery which severely hindered his walking ability, causing him to have to walk with a cane. The owner of two lawnmower shops, one in San Antonio and one in Houston, both started by his grandfather in the 1920’s, he was visiting Galveston one day and saw a Segway tour being conducted from the old Peanut Butter Factory. Being intrigued, he went into the shop and talked to the owner. During conversation he mentioned that he owned the lawnmower shops and the owner told him that Segways have the same kind of mechanism as riding lawnmowers. So he got on one and found to his delight that it was much easier for him to get around on the Segway than walk because of his hip replacement surgery. When the owner said he was planning to sell, that was it, he was hooked.

The deal was done in 2006.

There is an obvious advantage that the Segway Tours offer over other tours. They provide the same intimacy to the sights, like the wood tree carvings for example, as though you were on a walking tour. On Segways, you can linger at the site and learn about the carvings and who the artist was just like on a walking tour. However, on the Segway tours you are traveling at 7 to 8 mph, which creates a pleasant breeze. This speed is much less than their maximum attainable speed of 12 mph. And it is a far cry from a long, hot and tiring walking tour, which would take many hours to complete compared to the 2 hour Segway tour. Other tours which utilize vehicles of one sort or another do not have the intimacy of a walking or Segway tour as you have to duck around other peoples’ heads to see the wood tree carvings.

The profile of Galveston as a shopping destination has been on a steady upward trajectory over the past few decades. Even disasters such as Hurricane Ike seem now to be little more than a hiccup, as it not only cleared the slate for many businesses to expand and improve, it also ushered in entrepreneurs from around the country who felt called to help in the recovery. One of the most notable and fastest-growing facets of the Island’s shopping scene is the collection of antique stores it has acquired. They are all equally full of old-world charm and rediscovered treasures, troves of forgotten memories and reinvented history, but none has carved a niche for themselves quite like Nautical Antiques.

Delighting shoppers with its vast array of seafaring sundries since the turn of the century, it all started when Michael Culpepper did a favor for his father, who owns a similar store in Florida. Originally from North Carolina, he was living in Galveston when “my dad asked if I could come watch his shop for a couple of weeks.” Michael recalls. “So I went and visited, and then before I left I loaded up a van with stuff from his store and brought it here to sell it.” He opened his first store in 2000 at 621 Tremont, and met his wife and business partner Adrienne in September of 2001, who is from Washington D.C. but was living in Galveston and attending school. Adrienne laughs, “I even used working here as the basis for one of my school projects.” They moved to their current location on the corner of Mechanic and 22nd Street after Ike in 2008.

To obtain the majority of their authentic inventory, Michael and Adrienne travel overseas once a year to shipwrecking yards in India and Turkey, and will soon add Bangladesh to their itinerary. Adrienne tells of these massive salvage yards, where “they beach the ships, then attach an anchor chain to them and pull them up onto the shore where they cut the steel apart,” almost like slicing a cake. She also says that “the majority of the scrap metal is sold by the ton, the steel and the hulls of the ship are reused for infrastructure construction, buildings and roadways.” Then there are maybe seven or eight groups of people like Adrienne and Michael, who come in and purchase the pieces that may not be worth much as scrap metal, but hold an intrinsic value as refurbished or decorative pieces. “Like the brass bells, those would be worth just a couple of dollars as scrap, but they can sell it to us for more. And it tends to be a very polluting industry, so we love that this is really like the ultimate recycling scenario.”

Their travels also take them to Indonesia, a country known for its collective artistry of wood carving. The place-based and experiential learning modules will promote a common lexicon of environmental vocabulary and concepts applicable to all watersheds, estuaries, and wetland regions.

Every Sunday - Galveston’s Own Farmers Market brings locally grown produce, prepared foods, and edible farm products to residents of Galveston and the surrounding areas every Sunday morning, 9am-1pm. Using only a paper plate, three pieces of newspaper, and eight inches of duct tape, you will have the opportunity to construct your own unique vessel and answer the age old maritime question: “will it float?” Prizes will be awarded to the constructor of the ship that can hold the most weight. Every Thursday - Summer at the Seaport: Swab the Deck! Experience the thrills of tall ship life with ELISSA’s staff every Thursday morning, 9-11am, as we hose down and scrub the decks of the historic Tall Ship ELISSA. Fans of “Patrick O’Brien,” “Two Years Before the Mast,” and “Treasure Island” can step into the shoes of their favorite maritime character as they live the life of a traditional sailor and start off the hot summer days with a quick cool down. Every Friday- Summer at the Seaport: Hoist a Sail! This fun summer series continues 11am-12 noon. Raise sail on a historic Tall Ship! Friday, July 25th - Summer Art Workshop Series - The Galveston Arts Center is continuing their weekly classes at Moody Mansion all summer long. As in years past, a number of local fine arts professionals have paired with GAC, lending their teaching expertise to introduce an engaging variety of art techniques to school-aged kids. Students get to explore a different topic or medium each week, and can enroll in individual class sessions. On July 25th, prepare to meet some amazing, moving characters during the Animation Basics class taught by a professional illustrator. August 1st will usher in another month of creativity with a very cool SelfPortraits Project. On August 8th, Fabric, Fibers, Felt and Fun are in store, with some practical plushymaking and even very basic sewing. And finally, on August 15th, kids can start to gear-up for another school year when they create fabulous hand-made Books, complete with their own marbled paper, in which to record all their original ideas. The classroom facility is on the ground floor of Moody Mansion, in the home’s historic kitchen. Museum admission is not required to attend classes. The Basement to Attic tour of the 1892 Bishop’s Palace offers you a rare look to areas of the home normally off limits. The Bishop’s Palace is one of the best known and most widely recognized historic attractions in the country. It is listed by the U. S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark, and has been named by the American Institute of Architects as the 14th most important Victorian building in America. Galveston’s grandest and best-known building, the Bishop’s Palace is an ornate delight of colored stone, intricately carved ornaments, rare woods, stained-glass windows, bronze dragons and other sculptures, luxury materials and furnishings, and impressive fireplaces from around the world (including one lined with pure silver!). Built by lawyer Colonel Walter Gresham and designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier architect, this Victorian castle was cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America. The home was built from 1886 to 1892.

If you can only visit one of Galveston’s architectural treasures, the exquisite Bishop’s Palace is the one to see. The building is owned by the GalvestonHouston Catholic Archdiocese, and is managed as a museum by Galveston Historical Foundation.

Saturday, August 9th - Ocean Star Discovery Family Day will take place 10am-3pm. Family Days occur on the second Saturday of each month from 10am-3pm. Each Family Day focuses on a different theme that relates to the offshore industry.

A Good Variety of Reads “The Fever” by Megan Abbott, 2014 Ms. Abbott latest book again explores the world of teenage girls. The story is told from the point of view of the Nash family: Tom Nash is a High School Science teacher and father of two teens, Eli, a golden boy athlete, and Deenie, a good student and best friend of Lise. Lise is the first of many teenage girls to fall ill and convulse from some unknown outbreak. Abbott based her book on a real-life case of mass hysteria among teen girls in Leroy, New York.

“The Fever” explores burgeoning teenage sexuality, rife with intense crushes, adolescent secrecy, and broken alliances between lifelong friends. Abbott succeeds in creating a dark, spooky mystery which searches for a cause that might be an environmental toxin or a reaction to the HPV vaccine, or something completely unknown. The town is in a frenzy of rumors and the sense of community dissolves as parents try hopelessly to protect their daughters.

“The Last Policeman” by Ben Winters, 2012 Book #1 of The Last Policeman Series The end is nigh. In six months, the mammoth asteroid that is hurtling toward Earth will annihilate civilization. The world economy has crumbled. People are preparing for the end, quitting their jobs, and making plans to be with their loved ones. As his co-workers abandon their jobs, Hank Palace is promoted to Detective. He takes his job seriously and when he is called to investigate an apparent suicide, Hank believes the case is not so clear cut. This hard-boiled mystery is set in Winter’s fabulous pre-apocalyptic world.

Dwayne Jones serves as the executive director of the Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF), one of the largest not-for-profit historic preservation organizations working at the local level in the country. Jones holds degrees in History and Asian Studies from Trinity University in San Antonio and a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining the GHF, Jones served as Executive Director of Preservation Dallas. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), received the Dorothy Savage Award for Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation from Preservation Dallas and was named an Honorary Member of the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Andrew Coleman is a historian and native Galvestonian. After receiving his B.A. in History from Tulane University of Louisiana in 2013, he returned to Galveston to work for Galveston Historical Foundation, where he divides his time between the Preservation Conservation Services Department and The Bishop’s Palace.

About the 1838 Menard House Built in 1838 by John and Augustus Allen for the founder of Galveston, Michel Branamour Menard, the property passed between Menard and the Allen brothers (founders of Houston) in many complicated dealings in its early years. It is the oldest surviving residential dwelling in Galveston and the only structure to be owned by the founders of both Galveston and Houston.

Island East-End Theatre Company:

Lights, Stage, Performance, Etc.

By Kimber Fountain, Photos by Christa Schreckengost It is interesting to ponder the ancient storytellers, those orators of legend who were the first to satiate the innate human desire to be entertained. Their myths and tales captured minds and imaginations, and ignited a movement that would eventually evolve into one of man’s longest-standing institutions: theatre. The oldest use of dramatic structure has been found among Ancient Egyptian ruins, which emerged from the evolution of myths into rituals and religious ceremonies. Modern theatre as we know it, however, originated in 6th century Greece, specifically Athens, when a governmental initiation of new public festivals included a series of competitions centered on the performing arts. Categories included dancing, singing and music, but the poetry competition is where the magic happened. The stage was full of aspiring poets with lackluster recitations and lifeless delivery, when onto it bounded Thespis, a man whose energetic physicality and various character voices astounded audiences and propelled him, and theatre, into the literal spotlight.

Since then theatre, in one way or another, has made its way across every continent and has imbedded itself into every culture. It was once the most influential and soughtafter artistic medium in the world, and it has stood by like a patient stalwart as its scion, film, has steadily overtaken its influence and popularity. Amid predictions of its demise and with its necessity in question, the staying power of theatre has proven itself again and again, and continues to do so right in the heart of downtown Galveston.

Island East-End Theatre Company, known affectionately as ETC, began as a small troupe of actors who banded together to start their own theatre in 2002. The only remaining member of those original actors is Kim Mytelka, the Artistic Director of ETC and also its lifeblood, as she not only handles the daily operations of running a 501(c)(3) organization, but also produces and directs most of the shows. A native Galvestonian, Kim says with a smile, “I left three times never to come back, but finally I had to admit I’m a sand-inthe-toes kind of a girl.” She attended Stephen F. Austin University where she obtained both a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and Master’s degree in theatre. After working with The Strand Street Theatre for five years, she left Galveston and chose to focus on her family. Then in 2001, her last return to the Island came with an offer to be a guest director for The Strand Street Theatre’s production of “Cabaret.” “It was a little out of the blue, I hadn’t done anything in years, so it was an honor to be back.”

She did a few more productions with The Strand Street Theatre, but decided together with some fellow actors to break off and form a company of their own. Island ETC was incorporated in 2002; their first building was at the location of 20th Street and Postoffice St., directly across from The Grand Opera House. “We took out a ten thousand dollar loan and had a fundraiser, and everyone asked us, ‘are you sure you want to do this?’” Kim remembers. “But [Director of The Grand] Maureen Patton was really instrumental to us in those first years; her support had a big impact. You would think most

people would not want another theatre so close to theirs, but Maureen never felt that way. She was happy to have us there and was always willing to help.”

Now proudly entering its thirteenth year and twelfth season as a non-profit organization and theatre, Island ETC perpetuates that generosity through their own operations. Not only do they provide Galveston with sparkling entertainment and the thrill of live theatre, they also contribute a portion of the proceeds of one entire show per season to a local non-profit organization. And, “…our actors have always been paid,” Kim says, “we pay what is called a competitive living wage, it’s not a huge amount but a lot of my actors come from off the Island, so there are travel expenses involved, and it means a lot to me that they don’t have to pay to be in a show.” This places ETC in the semi-professional category of theatres, “a lot of people think we are a community theatre but we aren’t. This is a professional atmosphere, and it’s a great place. It is a good opportunity for people who maybe haven’t been in a show in a while and want to give it a shot again, but it is also a stepping stone for actors who want to go on and do other things. Or if you just want to work a crew, it is a small obligation, but it is a great chance to be around people who are really dedicated to what they do.”

Season 12 is comprised entirely of some of the company’s most popular past productions, perfect for a second chance if you missed it the first time, or a second showing if you loved it. Currently playing at Island ETC is “Sweet Charity,” the first production of the 2014-1015 season. “Sweet Charity” was actually the last show of our very first season, and it was only the second musical we had ever done,” says Kim. The current production includes several special appearances.

The lead role is played by ETC’s first-ever equity contract actor, and two local Galvestonians, Frank Petronella and Michael Womeo, will be reprising their original roles from ETC’s first production of “Sweet Charity” over ten years ago. Shows are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm through August 16th, with two Sunday matinees on July 27th and August 3rd at 2:30pm.

The remainder of the ETC season is slated to provide Galveston theatre-goers with plenty to make them laugh, cry, sing, or dance and includes many high-profile favorites and a limited run of one of their most popular shows to date, “The Dixie Swim Club” (September 12th through September 27th). Richard O’Brien’s “The Rocky Horror Show” (October 31st-November 29th) is a cult classic and the perfect way to celebrate the Halloween season (this show not recommended for children). For their benefit production, ETC presents “The Vagina Monologues” (January 16th, 17th, 23rd, and 24th); part of the proceeds from ticket sales will be used to enrich another local non-profit organization. A re-energized version of “Godspell” takes the stage to usher in the spring (February 27th-March 28th). The revamped score includes the popular hit from the movie version, “Beautiful City,” as well as all the original favorites with a touch more of rock n’ roll. The final production of the 2014-2015 season will be “I Ought to Be in Pictures” (April 24th-May 16th) and will feature a guest director.

Caroline Ratliff - Houston, Texas - Painting is my passion and joy, fulfilling an inner need to produce something of beauty. My paintings are an extension of the way I connect emotionally with nature.

Painting from life gives me the opportunity to see the nuances of color and light and a sense of the location. I am especially drawn to landscapes and I attempt to capture the essence of what I feel and see, whether it be the mountains or the deserts. I especially love the mountains as they revive my spirit with their might and power. Whether I use pastel or oil, large painting or small field study, I lose myself in the process of painting. My paintings begin with large abstract shapes. As the painting develops, these shapes begin to take on recognizable forms. I use a limited palette in oil mixing only primary colors and white to get the preferred color.

For pastel works, I use a limited number of colors.

Starting with darks, I move toward the light seeking harmony and peace. Texas based landscape artist, Caroline Ratliff, has developed her painting skills under the instruction of many prominent American pastel and oil painters, including Albert Handel, Matt Smith and Scott Christensen. She received a Fine Arts degree from the University of Alabama and taught school in the Birmingham area. Moving to Texas, she continued teaching to support her family. When she retired, she became a full time artist. Seeing a need for a pastel society, she organized the Pastel Society of Southeast Texas and is the current president.

Maria Hart - Houston, Texas - My passion for art started when I was very young and living in Cuba.

I have been a resident in Houston since 2007. Prior to moving to Houston I lived in Florida where I earned my Bachelors of Arts in Motion Picture Technology at the University of Central Florida.

In this country, I was able to expand my dreams and was very lucky to have the opportunity to work for Disney Animation Studios in Orlando, Florida. I fell in love with animation and special effects and the experience and knowledge that I acquired permitted me to teach Computer Visual Effects at Full Sail Real World Education School in Orlando. At present, I am dedicating my time to experimenting with different media (watercolor, oil, acrylic, wood, pencil, pastels, etc.) creating work that touches my soul. I hope that the final product will be enjoyed by the viewer as much as I enjoyed creating it.

July Guest Artist: Christina Todaro - Webster, Texas - On several occasions, I have been told that no one sees the world the way I see it, and I take it as a compliment. I am inspired by nature and my daily interactions. My paintings juxtaposition extraordinary objects, places, and things to create a metaphor for the way I am feeling. When I am creating I move fluidly through the process with sensitivity to my emotions and materials, and let the product naturally unfold before my eyes. In my paintings, I want to evoke excitement, admiration and concern to understand a different way of thinking. I want to give the viewer a chance to let go of daily pressures and submerge themselves into a world of freedom and beauty. My latest series is “The Mosaic Series” which is composed of different animals. The animals are painted like a mosaic, hence the name. They symbolize the complexity of life. The trials, the fight, the love and mostly the beauty that surrounds it all. For me, “art is my passionate obsession that has been a strong constant in my life no matter what else is happening. Art has given me LIFE and I want to inspire others.”

ArtWalk will be held Saturday, August 23rd throughout town, ranging in time from 4-10pm.

Held in the heart of the downtown historic district and now other parts of the Island, ArtWalk is a free event that takes place in existing commercial galleries, non-profit art spaces, and what are called “other walls”- restaurants and retail stores.

It starts by composing a beautiful landscape and then processing the scene to bring it to life. I have always enjoyed great black and white landscapes and have been producing some of my own.” Jim became interested in photography when he realized how happy it made his wife when he would take pictures. “My wife Janet and I started ‘J and J Images’ to produce fine art photography of the wildlife and landscapes of our beautiful country. We have worked hard and are privileged to hang our images at G. Lee Gallery.”

Her work will be on display from July 3rd to July 27th. Her show, a collection of mixed-media mosaics influenced by nature, the spirit, and the colorful world around us, will also be featured this month. The versatile medium of polymer clay has been in Margaret’s hands for over 20 years. This project includes use of polymer techniques, along with paint, image transfers, and inclusion of found objects.

Galveston Artist Residency (2521 Mechanic St., (409)974-4446, galvestonartistresidency.org) Heard Gallery (2217 Postoffice St., (903)3579073) This month, on exhibit is “The Pelican Day” painting which was designed for the pelican lover.

If you look closely at the paint strokes and you will see suggestions of many pelicans in the sky. This is part of unique series of prints. The original oil painting by Ray Heard is 40” x 60” and there are only 45 fine art prints in the collection. The art of hand colored photographs flourished before color film was invented. Traditional darkroom hand printed black & white silver gelatin photographs are transformed into brilliantly colored paintings.

Oil color is applied to the matte surface of the silver gelatin photo with soft cotton, blended by hand, then fine brushes are used for details. My art work is united by an eye for beauty in the unexpected and detail often missed. I work with both a traditional medium 2 1/4 format camera and a low fidelity toy box camera that produces soft dreamy images.

Rosenberg Library (2310 Sealy, downtown Galveston, (409)763-8854, rosenberglibrary.com) “A Century of Galveston Art” continues at the Library through December 2014. The exhibit is located in the Harris Gallery on the library’s 4th floor. “A Century of Galveston Art” will feature works by members of the Galveston Art League painted during the past one hundred years. Established in 1904, Rosenberg Library was the first organization in the city to collect and preserve fine art.

Founded ten years later in 1914, the Galveston Art League was the first organization to promote art appreciation and to support local artists in the city. A natural partnership, the two entities have been closely connected since the early 20th century.

For many years, Art League exhibits were regularly held at the library. When the Rosenberg Library added its Moody Memorial Wing in the 1970s, space was provided for a permanent gallery for the Galveston Art League. Each year a juried show was held, providing members the opportunity to exhibit and sell their art. In addition to planning regular exhibitions and juried shows, the Art

League managed its own permanent collection of artworks that had been acquired over the years through purchase or donation. Many of these were displayed in the Rosenberg Library and became iconic images for patrons. Works by notable local and nationally acclaimed artists such as Paul Schumann, Boyer Gonzales, Dawson DawsonWatson, Rolla Taylor, Frederic Taubes, and Eugene Speicher were included in the Galveston Art League collection. In 1982, the League generously donated its collection of 23 paintings and drawings to the Rosenberg Library to ensure its long-term preservation and care. Many of these works are included in A Century of Galveston Art. Although the Art League now maintains its own gallery on Postoffice Street the relationship between the League and the Rosenberg Library continues today through the McGivney Award purchase prize program.

The McGivney Award was created by Dr. Merlin Joseph McGivney (1905-1985), a local dentist and long-time member of the Galveston Art League.

The lead painting of this new show is titled “More Sargassum” and it’s by artist and gallery owner Gayle Reynolds. Gayle’s paintings for this show will be of the sea and the seagulls and the shrimp boats there. There will also be sargassum. In the boat room, Rex Reynolds is working on his seventh dory, and has been putting on the rails along the sides. Also on display are bronze sculptures of ladies by Pat Moberley Moore and welded sculptures called “Rust” by Jack Farrell. Pottery is by Madeleine Baker and John Whitman.

Dickens on the Strand Celebrates Christmas in July:

Special Tickets and Official Character Casting Call Upon The Fun Galveston’s summer time temperatures will give way, at least in spirit, the month of July as Galveston Historical Foundation’s Dickens on The Strand offers special promotions and events this July in anticipation of its 41st annual festival.

The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on five stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorianinspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gift items.

As part of Galveston’s “Winter Wonder Island” promotion, the world-famous Victorian holiday festival will offer a special $9 ticket through July 31st exclusively at www.dickensonthestrand.org.

In addition to the discounted tickets, an official casting call will be held on Wednesday, July 23rf from 6-8pm on the theater stage of The Grand 1894 Opera House. The casting call, a first for the 41st annual festival, will select a slate of official Dickens characters to represent the festival throughout the year at various events, media appearances and promotions. Actors will be judged on volume / clarity, diction / inflection, confidence, audience engagement accent and overall costumed appearance. Judges will include representatives of the festival and theater professionals.

The Grand 1894 Opera House presents more than 35 productions annually, including dance, drama, Broadway musicals, opera, as well as shows featuring stars of stage and screen. The Grand is one of the few remaining theatres of its era in Texas and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. As further recognition of its importance to the citizens of Texas, in 1993 the 73rd Texas Legislature proclaimed The Grand “The Official Opera House of Texas.”

IGuide: How long have The Bigsbys play rock and roll distilled from the roots of America and tested by the road. The band y’all been playing together?

have been playing together for a while, I see what years of experience will get you. We’re still just working at it and I think in five or six years, we will be a beast.

You know we all speak different languages when it comes to music. Brad and Nick are big music theory guys - Nick coming from the Baylor University Band and Brad is big on music theory while Russell and I aren’t so much, but we find a way to come together to make it work. We are getting to that point where we understand each other better compared to a couple of years ago, and now we are able to play off each other a lot more.

IGuide: I really love your first CD ‘True Story’ and am equally impressed by your new CD ‘Good Will Suitcase.’ You seem to have stretched out a bit on the second CD. Is this part of a master plan or is this just a natural progression as you grow?

Alex: We really haven’t, as a band, done anything the traditional way. Our first record was primarily just a bunch of songs that I had written on acoustic guitar and brought to the guys and said ‘lets make big songs out of these.’ So we went into the studio to cut ‘True Story’ with that all worked out. On our second record, we had gotten a small record deal with an Indie label through Shiner Bock Beers and they paid for us to go into the studio, but we had a specific time frame to work in and get it done. So we went into

the studio with only about three or four songs we had been working on and had not really been thinking about making a record until we got that deal. In a couple of months we had cranked out about 22 songs, but they were pretty barebones - like a verse and a chorus. So after 2 weeks in the studio, we built those songs from the ground up. It wasn’t one of those ‘spend a year writing, spend a year getting ready situations.’ It was ‘Let’s go in here and just do it and see what happens.’ So that’s what we did and I’m pretty happy with it!

IGuide: Who did you work with on the record?

Alex: Jonathan Tyler and Matt Pence produced the record for us at The Echo Lab in Denton. Matt has won a Grammy for some music he had previously produced so we were glad to work with both him and Jonathan. Jonathan also brought in the keyboard player he plays with to do the keyboard parts. We’re hoping to get a full time keyboard player by the end of the summer. I really love that 5 piece sound, so adding a keyboard player will really add to our sound.

IGuide: Why the name ‘Good Will Suitcase’?

Alex: About a year - year and a half ago we were on this crappy tour with 19 shows in 21 days.

We went from Palestine, TX to Chapel Hill, NC and every state in between. We were so new to this, we were thinking ‘just get out there and play’ but

hadn’t learned that there are both good and bad ways to do tours. We hadn’t figured out which days of the week to play, which days to do radio spots, and that kind of thing - we were paying our dues, so to speak.

So we were out there for a while without much money; and the little suitcase that I carried my pedals around in broke and I was down to about 20 bucks in my pocket. So we go into this Goodwill Store and I buy this little suitcase for 3 bucks. Then when we got in the van, I opened it up and discovered 10 bucks hidden behind the name tag inside.

It was one of those things when you get down on your luck, the most, good things happen to you.

IGuide: Is this where you expected to be at this point? Did you expect this kind of success at this point in your careers?

Alex: I never really had any expectations to be honest. There have been so many things that we

have done and that have had happen.

There are several bands that I’ve always looked up to, like Reckless Kelly, and to get a chance to play with guys like that, to have them call up or e-mail and say, ‘hey come open for us for a few shows,’ that is something I never would have dreamed would happen.

We’re happy. Our families support us and our friends support us. We have a great bunch of people that help us, like our Manager Matt Torno. He’s doing Bigsbys things every single day. He’s done so much for us. He’s not afraid to call someone up and say ‘give these guys a chance, they’re good.’ It takes an army and we are grateful for those who have helped us build our dream. We just want to keep playing and keep getting better and hope people enjoy our music and want to come see us.

Surfside has completed the joint project between the Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Village of Surfside, a Boat Ramp on Thunder Drive that leads directly into the Freeport Channel. This Boat Ramp park has restrooms and fish cleaning stations and is the fastest boat ramp access to the Gulf on the Texas Coast.
