“The Maldives area popular but potentially challenging destination for our clients, so it was important for us to identify a partner in Inner Maldives that will not only reduce our customers’ risk and stress on the ground but provide them with an unforgettable experience through pro-active trip management, versus relying solely on third-parties,” said Greg Evans, Chairman, Universal. “Universal Aviation Maldives will raise the bar for the private jet departure and landing experience so that it matches the luxury experience at local resorts.”

“Universal Aviation Maldives will support local business aviation traffic but just as importantly will be a local advocate for the industry in the Maldives,” said Charlie Mularski, Senior Vice President, International, Universal. “Our team will work closely with the Maldives government to identify opportunities to drive traffic, and improve infrastructure and access while also benefiting the local economy.”

This new resort presents a disruption to the Maldivian mould with over-sized, penthouse residences, which demonstrate fresh forward-thinking design for the Indian Ocean. They unveiled ubiquitous thatched-roof water villas have been replaced by contemporary whitewashed penthouses tinged with bright pink and set with swimming pools, with twilight views, and immense rooftop-decks that look across the expanse of iridescent turquoise sea. Accommodation at The Nautilus is called ‘houses and residences’ because guests should experience the same levels of comfort and ease as home, along with the most spectacular features the Maldives has to offer. Those features include private pools, ocean views from every house, soft sandy beaches encircling dense tropical greenery, and a rich coral reef just meters from the island’s shores. Originally a deserted island –too small at 250m diameter for inhabitation –the tiny island retains many of its original native plants and trees. Each of the 26 houses is a suite, with separate living room and bedroom. Just 15 one and two-bedroom houses line the island’s beaches, hidden away among coconut trees, palms, and tropical greenery. Eleven one and two-bedroom houses stand on stilts over the lagoon. Natural daylight fills the rooms and interior design is tropical with a touch of boho chic whimsy. The island style is relaxed, with the guideline given to the interior designers to “make it look like it could be someone’s home, and better”. Most of the furnishings have been custom-built for The Nautilus.
At the three restaurants and poolside bar, guests can explore ‘unscripted dining’, meaning the freedom to order off menu if that’s how they feel. The Nautilus is a world where a menu is just a place to gather inspiration and meals are designed for the guest, whenever they want to eat. Dining, for those wishing to follow chef’s suggestions, include intriguing infusions of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine at the over-water signature restaurant; elegant simplicity with Japanese and Latin-American creations at the grill; and global delicacies at the all-day dining restaurant. No opening or closing times, no breakfast hours, no shoes, no dress codes. Guests come as they are, enjoy great company and indulge in a shared passion for extraordinary cuisine.
The Nautilus Maldives welcomed its first guests, ushering in a new world of luxury in Baa atoll on February 3, 2019, on a perfect sunny Sunday afternoon. The Nautilus is noticeably different than other luxury resorts: service is truly bespoke and activities follow the lead of the natural rhythms of nature; sunrise, sunset, the tides, the phases of the moon.
The vision of The Nautilus is to join the select group of private islands recognized as the best in the world. With its modern bohemian style, and concept of absolute freedom for its guests, who enjoy no rules, no attire, no set restaurant hours, no fixed menu choices, its driving philosophy is to make guests feel not only completely at home, but also as if time itself no longer exists.
The entire team welcomed the first guests with champagne, boduberu and a ribbon cutting ceremony, with the highlight being the ‘first steps’ on the island by guests. Celebrations continued
through the evening with sunset cocktails and the first ever ‘Nautilus Rising’ ceremony as the distinctive nautilus shell in the pool gradually lightened, giving the appearance of rising out of the water.
Uniquely in the Maldives, The Nautilus experience begins on the runway at Velana International Airport, where every guest will be taken straight from the plane to a VIP terminal in the airport for a relaxed customs and immigration clearance. From there, it’s a short hop to The Nautilus’ own private lounge to await the 35-minute seaplane flight to Baa atoll.
The Nautilus doesn’t judge, doesn’t impose and doesn’t inhibit its guests. Instead, it removes barriers and creates incredible excursions and adventures, taking guests where they want to be when they want to be there, from midnight swims in glowing phosphorescent waters alongside a marine biologist, to exploring deserted islands on a yacht or floating in a ‘star filled’ pool under the milky way while the House Captain whisks up another perfect cocktail. Guests looking for a mindful holiday are invited to join daily complimentary yoga, meditation and fitness classes. Watersports activities such as snorkeling, kayaking in a transparent canoe, or stand-up-paddle boarding are free: guests simply decide when they want to go.
Located in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a kaleidoscopic wonderland of incredible marine life awaits discovery. Trips to world-renowned Hanifaru Bay to swim amongst whale sharks and manta rays; diving on iridescent coral reefs; exploring remote sandbanks and deserted islands picnic in hand or just cruising the ocean in a custom yacht are among the many adventures guests can look forward to.
The Nautilus sets guests on their own path to wellness, drawing on ancient wisdoms and modern innovations for a transformative journey in its four treatment rooms in the heart of the island. The spa specialises in the bespoke, designing wellness programmes and daily rituals that refresh and relax, pamper and protect. Guests can salute the sun at dawn, discover alternative healing, join complimentary wellness classes or craft their own path to restoration. On the quiet, unrushed shores of The Nautilus, life moves at a different pace and guests are given all the time in the world to reflect and recalibrate.

Cozily nestled on the fine sandy shores, the renovated beach villas maintain the resort’s beach vibe, now with a refreshing palette of neutral tones which complement the island’s natural colors.
All the villas on the beach have gone a remarkable change. The darker timbers have been lightened with soft ivory and cream, which brightened interiors and created a refined beach-house vibe with infusions of tropical charm.
With the new sleek indoor and outdoor spaces for the bathroom, guests can sink into a deep oval tub in their courtyard garden, or retreat to the cool of a glassedin air-conditioned area. In addition to this, there is now a traditional Maldivian swing on each villa terrace, giving the villas an authentic touch of local culture.
Aside from the visual changes, the resort has brought in modernized facilities to reduce energy as part of Anantara’s sustainability goals.
Guests can choose their pick of a variety of types of villas; Sunrise Beach Villas, Sunset Beach Villas, Anantara Pool Villas, Sunset Pool Villas, Two-Bedroom Family Villas and Two-Bedroom Anantara Pool Villas.
The resort is located on Digufinolhu island in the South Malé Atoll, where luxury simplicity. The resort comprises of many
spacious villas, only 35-minutes away from Velana International Airport on speedboat. Upon arrival, guests can peer into the crystal clear waters to gaze upon the puffer fish, sting rays and baby reef sharks below the jetty.
Guests with children can relax as their children are entertained with Anantara’s kids club and numerous activities. The whole family can go on adventures that include water bobbing, surfing and deep sea fishing. They can also take a short pontoon ride to the island of Guli Fushi, picnic on the deserted beaches and experience some of the best snorkelling in the Maldives.
The cuisine at the resort is an inspiring Maldives restaurant which is guaranteed to be a treat for one’s taste buds. Dining is lax, with a range of seafood and meat grills, fine Italian cuisine and varying themed buffet dinners, to lighter meals poolside for lunch.
Anantara Dhigu’s reminiscent location is only matched by its tranquil island design approach, that gives of a feeling of a home away from home, which provides guests with their every need.

We were honored to interview Hussain Waheed, Airport Manager of One&Only Reethi Rah and the recent winner of the People’s Edition Award at the MATATO Maldives Travel Awards 2018.
Hussain Waheed is recognised for delivering exceptional service as he goes above and beyond to ensure One&Only Reethi Rah guest’s first and last experiences are truly memorable. Throughout his time working in the Maldives he has remained loyal to the One&Only brand, staying with the company since he joined in 1999. His personal and dedicated approach to his role aligns with the One&Only vision of developing a community of passionate people who deliver amazing experiences and everlasting memories for guests. If you begin your day with positive thoughts,
Congratulations on winning the People’s Edition Award at MATATO Maldives Travel Awards 2018. How are you planning on leveraging this opportunity to inspire the younger generation to work harder at developing their career in the hospitality scene?
It is an aim of mine to inspire the younger generation studying hospitality and tourism. I am regularly approached by students in higher education in Male, for advice and guidance prior to starting new positions in the tourism industry. A student needs the most guidance after completing school or college. I am thrilled to be able to empower them with the skills and knowledge from my own experience working in the hospitality industry. I believe it is very important to act as a positive role model and set a professional example in order to inspire the younger generation. Winning the People’s Edition Award is another way I am able to inspire the younger generation to be passionate about their career and constantly strive to achieve their goals.
Can you share with us what you feel has been the most valuable part in your career development to date, that has enabled you to get to where you are today?
One&Only Reethi Rah certainly! It is the place that has transformed my career. I have worked at other top tourism establishments prior to joining the One&Only brand; however it is at One&Only Reethi Rah where I have learned to constantly strive to exceed the highest standards and to anticipate the needs of our most discerning guests.
At work, what puts a smile on your face?
I am surrounded by positive and hardworking colleagues at work, so for me I find this infectious and can’t help but be happy and smiling at work as it is a pleasure. In addition to the people around me at work, it is my wife who never fails to put a smile on my face. Her smile gives me all the positive energy I need before starting my day at work. I believe that from the moment I leave home in a cheerful mood, it is my intention to pass that cheer on to someone else every day, and in turn that gives more positive thoughts and energy to me. If you begin your day with positive thoughts, you’ll have the perfect day at work and return home smiling.
How have you changed in the past five years?
My 18 years with One&Only is a testament of loyalty and there has always been endless opportunities for my own growth and development within the company. In fact, One&Only Reethi Rah offer a number of training and career development programs to support colleagues at all levels. I am honored to be the proud winner of numerous awards over the years, which acts
as further recognition of the passion and dedication I have for my job.
What is the key characteristic that every resort Airport Manager should have?
He or she must be a positive thinker; it’s not only a key characteristic for a resort Airport Manager, but for every job. He or she should be able to accept and adapt to environmental and political changes, and most importantly be a good team player because it is important that you work well with everyone in the team.
What is your business approach to One&Only’s art of welcoming? Do you think that the art of welcoming is a differentiating factor for luxury hotels?
One&Only resorts are known the world over for creating memorable experiences through a distinctive style and personality borne of each local culture, genuine hospitality and an injection of captivating energy. One&Only Reethi Rah offers guests an unrivalled level of style, exclusivity and once-in-alife-time experiences, while inspiring extraordinary journeys for the soul. As an innovative luxury brand, we have a unique and personalised way of welcoming our guests. Our hand on our heart welcome is recognized world-wide as the One&Only welcome gesture; which demonstrates a sense of genuine and kind hospitality. As the resort airport representative, I am the first point of contact between our guests and the resort, so I have the great opportunity to make that first and everlasting impression by welcoming the guests from their flight in true One&Only style.
What are the values that you draw on when you welcome your guests? What experiences do you deliver? What are the principal differentiating characteristics in your service that you offer compared to other hotels?
I show warmth to each guest that I welcome. I anticipate their mood and demonstrate empathy for their journey and excitement for the start or end of their holiday with us. These are some of the core service philosophy that is the back bone of service at One&Only.
We ensure couples and families alike leave with magical stories to be told. Luxury service is more than just tailored experiences which cannot be easily replicated elsewhere, its creating memorable experiences from an airport arrival and adding simple touches that are inspired by the Maldivian culture. It’s less about the resort facilities and amenities, more about authenticity of the experience that epitomizes a luxury travel escape. When welcoming guests, I draw on this as inspiration and ensure that from the
moment I welcome guests at the airport, they begin an unforgettable journey.
What do you believe is the best and worst aspect of your job?
The best part of my job is when I am recognized for my contribution and loyalty to the company. Winning awards in recognition of my work is a proud moment for me. The worst could be days when my wife forgets to ask me how my day was. She is my biggest inspiration so on days she forgets to ask, these days are not my best.
You have been welcoming many high profile guests arriving on private jets, what is the one thing that you feel needs improvement at Velana International Airport?
I want to see Velana International Airport transform into a service oriented airport. Improved facilities are certainly something the airport needs. With skilled and trained staff, we could improve so many aspects at the airport. I am looking forward to a better airport with the completion of the airport development project.
How do you think luxury travelers’ expectations have changed in recent years?
I believe that luxury travelers are now seeking exclusive and memorable experiences; not just a beautiful holiday destination. With a plethora of luxury destinations around the world, they are now making their vacation choice based on one-of-a-kind experiences and tailored activities. Luxury is about tailored experiences which cannot be easily replicated elsewhere. Luxury personalized experiences vary for each guest; some seek adventure and adrenalin, while others seek comfort and ease. At One&Only Reethi Rah we recognize this and offer diverse unique experiences for every guest.

How important are OTAs for Maldives? What incentives do you offer to local DMC’s compared to OTAs?

Ahmed Karam President Guesthouse Association of Maldives
“OTAs and local DMCs are both important. I look forward to see more locally owned OTAs. About DMCs as guesthouse are small in scale which is not attractive for many of them. At the beginning I walked into some of the DMCs in Malé, but they didn’t show much interest in us. But I am happy to see the situation is getting better. Sustainable way of managing it is really important to work with DMC’s. In terms of Qmarketing it will help to take the destination marketing in a good way. It’s really a bit insecure to depend heavily on OTAs, as they promote destinations in a choosy way when we have issues at times in the country. But local DMCs will help us continue even at the difficult times.”

Amjad Thaufeeg Director of Sales & Marketing Kanuhuraa Maldives
“Both are important. DMCs have 25% lower rates than OTAs. We also offer incentives to selected DMCs based” on their performance.”

Thoha Ali Director of Sales & Marketing Cocoon Maldives / You & Me Maldives
“Both are important. Incentives are offered based on individuals’ performance and contribution whether it’s a DMC or a foreign tour operator.”

Abdulla Nasheed Managing Director Kaani Hotels
How we got bookings in the past and now:
Past. OTA’s. 85% Travel Agents. 15%
Now. OTA’s. 40% Travel Agents. 60%

Nina Nizar Sales & Marketing Manager Sun Travels & Tours
I believe OTA are as important as the Dmc for the local industry. OTA are imperative in filling in last minute inventory.
OTA generally get a 15 to 20% commission while DMCs enjoy a wholesale contact rate which is around 25% less than the rate given to OTAs
OTA’s also work on a dynamic rate to their client while the DMC have a set seasonal rate.

Mohamed Zaheen Sales Manager Angsana Velavaru
Both play a significant role, however we see OTAs growing day by day. In terms of incentives, we offer different options:
Option 1: Year-round incentive percentage based on targeted production tiers. Some counts RN and some counts revenue.
Option 2: Booster incentive along with year-round incentive to penetrate last minute business. Offer a certain amount as a kick based on the category (Beach & Water) with reachable targets.
Option 3: Offering a gesture for the top producer (DMC). This is being calculated on quarter basis. Select the top producer (either RN or Revenue) and offer free stay at resort or return tickets to close by destination with accommodation.

Nabeel Abdulla Group Director of International Sales & Distribution The Small Maldives Island Co (TSMIC)
Both models work and helps the growth of tourism in their own ways. DMCs generally offer 25% rate advantage over OTA rates.

Ahmed Afrah Managing Director Canopus Maldives
OTAs are very important as the big players are now dominating the online business due to their size, financial strength, technology... etc. There are no incentives offered to OTAs, it’s actually higher than DMCs. OTAs will only ask for the same rate which we publish online to be given to them. Nothing more!
