t’s great to bring you the Winter 2018 edition of the epayWorld magazine as we all prepare for the colder months and continue to get down to serious business.

This issue is full of useful news topics that should have everyone very excited as we shine the spotlight on a range of new opportunities for you to seize upon.

Our cover feature on page 8 details how digital music streaming now accounts for over half of all music sales in Australia. Statistics show that we are streaming music for over three hours a day – generally on a mobile phone and in all facets of our lives – and we should only expect these numbers to increase.

CHINA MOBILE PAYMENT AND FINANCE CONFERENCE

epay travelled to Beijing in April to attend the 2018 China Mobile Payment and Finance Conference held at the New Century Hotel. The conference focussed on mobile payment innovations and what the future holds in terms of regulations and supervisions. Along with epay, the conference attracted regulators, card organisations, commercial banks, telco operators, terminal manufacturers and other technology companies.

One of Australia’s largest specialty supermarkets says it has increased sales by almost 15 per cent since it began accepting Alipay payments in store.

L

ocated close to Chinatown, Paddy’s Market and the UTS, Thai Kee IGA Haymarket in Sydney has a proud history catering to Chinese locals and visitors who want goods sourced direct from Asia. The specialty supermarket now caters to their payment preferences as well and the benefits have been immediate and significant.

Thai Kee’s Business Manager Mariana Yudas said “sales had increased by approximately 10 to 15 per cent” since it implemented the Alipay payment service at the start of the year.

Much of this momentum, Yudas said, can be attributed to a promotional campaign they ran over the Chinese New Year period which saw customers receive a 10 per cent discount on all purchases over $100 when they used Alipay.

“This campaign helped generate 30 to 50 Alipay transactions per day and thousands of dollars in sales value across the store,” she said.

“Catering to Chinese customers can be very lucrative and in addition to accepting Alipay, it’s the little touches that count, like having signage in Mandarin and Cantonese, along with ensuring staff can speak the same languages as their clientele.”

Yudas added that Alipay had proved popular outside of the Chinese New Year period.

“Alipay has been very popular in our supermarket. It’s being used by many of our regular customers but also tourists,” Yudas said.

“We’ve also noticed Chinese students using Alipay to buy noodles and snacks that get them through their studies.

Australian made nougat and lanolin is also very popular with our Chinese shoppers.”

Looking ahead, Yudas said the supermarket was considering another Alipay promotional campaign during Golden Week which is a Chinese national holiday associated with extra spending.

WHAT IS ALIPAY? It is a payment method used by over 600 million active users worldwide and is more widely used than cash in China.

Alipay lets its users conduct transactions directly from their mobile devices using QR code technology. Alipay is an exceptionally fast and simple digital wallet that can be used at the pointof-sale.

Businesses can also use the service to communicate with their customers, notifying them when there are promotions or discounts to get them in-store.

For cash voucher products like VPAY, we recommend you only accept cash as payment.

Never provide your five digit sales code to anyone or let them operate your terminal alone.

Do not give vouchers to the customer until the full valid payment has been received.

Never give out voucher numbers over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from epay; or a product vendor; or from a Government Department.

Key information for retailers

HOW TO DO A TERMINAL REFUND

If you print out the wrong voucher or an incorrect amount, follow these steps: Menu – Refund Transactions – Sale Type – Enter Serial Number or swipe card – Enter the epay Transaction Number – Refund receipt printed.

Remember, refunding a voucher TXN from the terminal does not deactivate the voucher until it has been checked and blocked by the network. This could take several weeks. If the voucher is found to be used, you will be recharged for the full TXN amount.

HOW TO REQUEST A REFUND

BY PHONE

Call epay customer service on 1300 301 408 within 72 hours of printing the voucher to log a refund or void request. Requests outside of this time-frame will not be accepted.

Retain copies of the voucher and/or POSA card plus POSA Activation receipt until these have been cleared for refund by the network.

Not all products can be refunded and will never be refunded if they have been used.
