The American Architecture Prize 2016 brought forth many path-breaking designs, notable among which was a twisted wonder from Shanghai that walked away with the top prize.

The first prize went to the twisted tower of Shanghai, which also stands proud as the second tallest building in the world, just below the Burj Khalifa (828 mts.) in Dubai. It completed construction in January, 2016

haracteristics of function, form and innovation were the yardsticks that the winners of the American Architecture Prize 2016 were judged by. The jury included architects Sadie Morgan, Alejandro Zaera-Polo and Will Alsop, and the judges chose path-breaking designs from over 40 categories to select winners for architecture, interior design and landscape architecture.

The ceremony for AAP 2016 was held at the Cooper Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, on October 25, 2016.

The first prize went to the twisted tower of Shanghai, which also stands proud as the second tallest building in the world, j u s t b e l ow t h e Bu r j K h a l i f a (828 mts.) in Dubai. It completed construction in January, 2016.

The tower was envisioned and designed by architect Dan Winey of Gensler. The 121-storey structure twists owing to a series of windtunnel tests, conducted to confirm that this 632 mt.-high tower will be able to reduce wind-load by 24 percent during typhoons.

To get the form right, the tower was divided into 9 vertical sections.

Owing to its height, the tower accommodates observatories and cultural centres at its top, hotels at its centre, and shops at the base.

While the tower was one of the most noticeable designs on the list of winners, there were others that held attention as well.

by Australian firm McBride Charles Ryan. The striking feature about this one is its shape - an infinity that houses a library right at the point where the wings meet.

The Landscape Architecture prize went to the 44-hectare environmental project that is the largest till date in Sydney. It was conceptualised by the landscape architects of Turf Design Studio & Environmental Partnership who worked alongside water experts of Alluvium, artists from Turpin + Crawford Studio, ecologists from Dragonfly Environmental, and engineers from Partridge. The team came up with the brilliant idea of transforming the post-industrial land into a wetland park that can re-use water.

AAP 2016 was targeted at designs that aimed to “advance the appreciation of quality architectural design worldwide.�

panish bathroom products giant Roca has a centenary year round the corner and the celebrations will be fulcrumed around the 7th edition of ‘jumpthegap’, the annual international design contest initiated by the company.

The competition invites architecture students and professionals to present original ideas that would define the future of the bathroomware space, and stake a claim to a €10,000 prize, to be awarded in each o f t h e ‘p r o f e s s i o n a l ’ a n d ‘student’ categories.

The latest edition also includes a ‘We Are Water Foundation’ prize of € 6,000 in favour of designs that incorporate the best of sustainability principles.

Roca has a special affinity to the Indian market, a fact reinforced by the promotion of this competition, promoted by Roca in collaboration with the BCD Barcelona Design Centre for the first time this year in the country.
