OASL Group and FruitFlour win US $50k each for emerging winners of the 2020 KIC Agritech Challenge Kosmos Innovation Center has announced the winners of the 2020 KIC Agritech Challenge. After several pitching rounds, training sessions and market research tours, the judges settled on OASL Group and FruitFlour as the winners. Both startups will receive US $50K each as well as one-year full incubation with mentoring and coaching at the KIC Hub. OASL Group also won the $1,000 Team Spirit prize sponsored by KIC alumni, Trotro Tractor Ltd. The OASLGroup produces ethanol from juice from cashew fruits which are usually left to rot after the removal of the cashew nut. The FruitFlour is an agri-processing startup that produces ready-made baby food from fruits and vegetables. www.theinnovationspark.com

Business Scout for Development selects 16 businesses for its Trade Fair Program Business Scout for Development on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) organized the virtual trade fair pitch to shortlist promising Ghanaian businesses for its trade fair opportunity.

Selected businesses include popular brands such as Wear Ghana, Kaeme, mSimps, Tekura and Oyé.

Participating businesses will receive comprehensive support which includes advice as well as pro rata financial support to participate in one of the leading German or European trade fairs.

The Good Roll Factory Ghana signs an agreement with Innohub for capital raise and management support.

The Good Roll Factory Ghana Limited (TGR), a subsidiary of The Good Roll Holding of The Netherlands, has signed an agreement with the venture development firm, Innohub. Innohub is expected to provide the company with professional support with regards to fundraising and management support.

TGR envisions to produce sustainable toilet paper that is solely made from bamboo thus making it the first company to make bamboo toilet paper in Africa. The Good Roll factory has already attracted a couple of local investors including Footballer of the Year and Captain of Ghanaian senior football team, the Black Stars, Andrew Dede Ayew. www.theinnovationspark.com

George Boateng makes the 2021 MIT Technology Innovators under 35 list Ghana’s George Boateng, a social entrepreneur and PhD candidate at ETH Zurich, has been named as a Pioneer in the 2021 MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35 list. People selected on the “Pioneers” list are global innovators making crucial advances in fusion power, computing, biosensors, and robotics.

George built a smartphone-based platform to teach young people to code— and tackle Africa’s IT skills gap in the process. His venture, SuaCode.ai is a smartphone-based software bootcamp which teaches Processing, a Java-based language.

Mobile money transactions value skyrocket to GHS 83.8bn The recently released summary of economic and financial data from the Bank of Ghana reveals that momo transactions hit a record value of GHS 83.8bn in April 2021.

This represents a 2.5x increase in the value since April 2020 which was GHS 32.8bn. The total interoperability transactions value also stood at GHS 1.36bn.

9 African startups make it to the Y Combinator 2021 Summer Cohort Nine African tech startups were selected for the 2021 summer cohort which makes them eligible to receive US$ 125,000 each in seed funding as well as further investment opportunities at a demo day. Majority of the startups were from Nigeria and Egypt.

The Nigerian startups include MechoAutotech, an on-demand app for automobile maintenance & repairs; Suplias, a marketplace for mom and pop stores; and Lemonade Finance, a borderless payments solution. The other startups include Amenli, Odiggo and ShipBlu from Egypt as well a as Chari and Freterium from Morocco. South Africa is being represented by Floatpays, a financial wellness startup.
