Why do we take our community so seriously?

The BESO community takes safety and inclusion so seriously because of its rich and enduring history of individuals who devoted themselves to creating safe spaces for those who identify somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum. Throughout the years, countless brave souls have fought against discrimination, persecution, and marginalization to establish a world where BESO individuals can live authentically and without fear.

The sacrifices made by activists, advocates, and allies have paved the way for progress in LGBTQ+ rights, from decriminalization of homosexuality to the recognition of same-sex marriage. Each milestone achieved is a testament to the unwavering dedication of those who came before us, and it reinforces the responsibility we bear to protect and preserve the gains they fought so hard to secure. Despite this devastating loss, the impact of Harvey Milk's activism and Scott Smith's contributions endured, inspiring future generations of LGBTQ activists and advancing the fight for gay rights and equality. ​ Sylvia Rivera: A transgender woman of Puerto Rican and Venezuelan descent, Sylvia Rivera was a prominent LGBTQ+ rights activist and co-founder of STAR along with Marsha P. Johnson. She fought for the rights of transgender and homeless individuals and played a vital role in early LGBTQ+ activism.

Rivera was born and raised in New York City to a Puerto Rican father and a Venezuelan mother. Tragically, she was abandoned by her father José Rivera early in life and her mother died by suicide when Rivera was three years old, and so she became an orphan. Rivera had no choice but to be raised by her Venezuelan grandmother, who disapproved of Rivera's outworldly feminine behavior, specifically Rivera’s desire to wear makeup in fourth grade.

As a result, in 1962 Rivera left home at ten years old and began living on the streets of New York. Like many other homeless youth in the community, she engaged in survival sex as a child prostitute. She was taken in by the local drag queens, including Marsha P. Johnson, who became Rivera's best friend and protector. After surviving tumultuous teenage years in poverty and experiencing constant discrimination that affected the opportunities present for Sylvia, she decided to act.

STAR (Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries) and Sylvia Rivera played a crucial role in the protest for Amanda Milan's tragic death and made significant contributions to the LGBTQ+ movement and transgender rights. Amanda Milan, also known as Amanda Milan Ramirez, was a transgender woman of color and a member of STAR. The imperialistic goals of the Ottoman Empire sought to assert cultural and religious dominance, which further intensified the persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals. The LGBTQ+ community faced brutal treatment and execution, often as part of the wider genocidal campaigns.

We understand that the environment you navigated has been hostile, and obstacles to being heard and respected have been insurmountable. The weight of discrimination, prejudice, and ignorance bore heavily upon you, and we acknowledge that

49 these challenges have caused lasting harm and pain. For that, we are truly sorry.

Over the years, we were led astray by the illusions cast by religion, dominant world power agendas, and societal norms. We allowed ourselves to see you differently and treated you unfairly, creating an environment that prevented you from being your true authentic selves. We did not value the example you provided of courageously embracing your identity and the richness it brings to our collective human experience.

Today, we recognize our involvement in that dark period and take responsibility for our actions. We apologize for not standing beside you as allies, for not advocating for your rights, and for failing to provide the safe and inclusive society that every person deserves.

We pledge to change the laws, everywhere, to ensure that all people can live in hope rather than fear. We commit ourselves to creating a society where everyone is accepted for who they are, respected, cherished, and protected. We vow to contribute to a safe environment that allows you to express your authentic selves without fear of judgment or discrimination.

We recognize that your sexual orientation and gender identity do not define your worth as human beings. You are valuable, deserving of love, respect, and opportunities, just like every other individual in this world. We promise to champion your rights and dignity, advocating for inclusive policies, and working towards dismantling the structures of discrimination that have caused you so much pain.

Let this prayer and plea be a symbol of our dedication to change and to creating a more compassionate and understanding society. We are committed to learning from our mistakes and standing by your side as steadfast allies. Together, let us work towards a future where love, acceptance, and

We now understand that we all were under the illusion cast by religion and dominant world power agendas to see you differently, to treat you differently, but now we can own our involvement in that dark period of ignorance and fear and make amends by contributing to a safe environment and society and opportunities for every person regardless of what they identify as in regards to sexual orientation or gender roles.

We will change the laws, everywhere, so that all people can live in hope instead of fear and be accepted for who they are, respected, cherished, and protected.
