Students plan for summer, Field Experience Program still open for new applications By Ian Flanagan Staff Writer
W
here are you working this summer? Going back home to pick up at an old job, or starting fresh somewhere new? Or maybe you’re travelling to an externship or internship? ...and there is always the chance that you still don’t know... The CCPD has distributed all available assistance money for students’ summer plans, but registration for independent internships through the Field Experience Program is still open through Friday said Joan Hawxhurst, CCPD director. The CCPD helps support Field Experience students to establish internship goals, participate in structured reflections and obtain work evaluations, Hawxhurst said. Students must work at least 32-hour weeks for six weeks to receive a non-credit transcript
notation. K graduates from 1969 to 2008, plus a few parents of students and alumni, will host 30 first-year and sophomore externs this summer, according to Pam Sotherland, CCPD recruiting associate. “We’re excited about how involved alumni are in internships,” Hawxhurst said. Alumni and parents will host at least 13 of the 58 currently funded Field Experience students. The CCPD did not have a final number of non-funded Field Experience students, but Sotherland said, “I think the numbers are really good for this year.” First year Darrin Camilleri obtained Field Experience funding for an independent internship at U.S. Congressman John Dingell’s Dearborn office. “I’m really excited to get to talk to the voters in the 15th district,” said Camilleri, who intends to
create an interdisciplinary major in public policy. “I would either have had to intern and find a job or work full time, but with the Field Experience grant I can work full time at my internship,” he said. Students have also located summer opportunities for jobs, internships and SIP research outside the CCPD. Junior Evan Levine will travel to Italy for his SIP. “I’m participating in an archaeological dig at Gabii near Rome through the University of Michigan. I’ll do field work and whatever I find, that will be my SIP,” he said. The Stryker Institute for Service-Learning and the Arcus Center for Social Justice have sponsored funded internships this summer as well, Hawhurst said. Stryker community-building interns will work with the center’s partners in the Kalamazoo area.

Q & A: Dean Westfall reviews one year, looks forward to the next By Ian Flanagan Staff Writer
Index: Did the Student De-
velopment Office put any major changes in place in 2010-11 that made this year unique? Westfall: Probably the biggest
differences were the Student Activities Fee and Sodexo’s new general management.
Index: What challenges did the
office work with in regard to the Student Activities Fee? Westfall: Allocation was a chal-
lenge and how to communicate about it. We anticipated that because it was new in the fall, we wouldn’t quite all get the hang of it then. We’re better with it now in the spring.
Index: Will there be any changes
in the way that the fee is administered for next year? Westfall: In the original plan there was a method for a group of students — not StuComm, a separate body — to have some influence over allocations, and we opted not to do that this first
year, and we will be getting that together for next year. There may be a shift in funding toward club sports.
