Dear Friends, Families, and Guests,

Welcome to Starlight and thank you for joining us for Starlight’s production of Legally Blonde The Musical!

Tonight’s performance is full of dynamic dance performances and unforgettable songs. If you’re looking for pure fun, you’ve come to the right show! Tonight’s story centers on Elle Woods, a young woman pursuing a degree at Harvard Law, who defies the odds and finds her full potential. She does it all while staying true to herself—in Elle’s case, by wearing her signature pink outfits and cultivating unexpected friendships along the way.

Starlight’s mission is to connect the community through live arts experiences –and one of the many ways we accomplish this mission is through shows like this one that we produce locally. Our self-produced shows highlight local and national performers and creatives, elevating Kansas City’s position as a catalyst for talent.

Speaking of talent, if you haven’t heard—Justin Cooley, Starlight’s 2021 Blue Star Awards winner for Outstanding Actor in a Lead Role, was nominated for his first Tony Award in May. We’re so proud of all he’s accomplished and are thrilled that his Starlight experience could be one small step in his journey. We are doubly proud to know that Justin is performing in the five-time Tony Award winning musical Kimberly Akimbo, a production that holds the esteemed winner of the 2023 Tony for Best Musical.

The Blue Star Awards is just one of our programs made possible through the generosity and dedication of the Starlight community, from our board members and employees to patrons, donors, volunteers and community members. We are proud to bring you unique arts experiences that foster the love for theatre that exists within our city.

Thank you for choosing Starlight – a uniquely Kansas City tradition of music and theatre under the stars!

From Blue Star Awards to Broadway: A Dream Come True

In 2021, local Olathe East graduate Justin Cooley took home the Blue Star Award for Outstanding Actor in a Lead Role. His win led him to the Jimmy Awards, presented in New York by the Broadway League Foundation, which recognizes the best high school musical talent across the nation.

Justin Cooley was named a finalist and, following the Jimmy Awards, he was cast in the brand-new musical Kimberly Akimbo. Cooley made his Broadway debut in the production as Seth in 2022, and in May he earned his first Tony Award nomination. The musical went on to win the 2023 Tony Award for Best Musical.

Starlight congratulates Justin Cooley and is thrilled to have been part of his journey to Broadway with the Blue Star Awards.

Or maybe it’s the belief, shared with all of my co-workers, that people come first. Whatever it is, the opportunity to provide care is a privilege I never forget.
