After 50 years and more than 50 million records sold, Jim Croce’s legacy as an iconic singer/songwriter is firmly cemented. A.J. Croce, a Billboard charting singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer brings Jim’s classic songs to the stage with his “Croce Plays Croce 50th Anniversary Tour.”

After 10 studio albums and 30 years of touring the world establishing his own career, in the early 2000s, A.J. taught himself guitar and several of his father’s (Jim’s) classics. The fan response from dropping in a song or two like “Operator” in his own show was astounding and deeply emotional. He then debuted a concert that celebrated the legacy of his father’s songs, stories and music, as well as his own. The show featured two generations of Croce music and many songs by other artists which connect father and son as performers. Throughout the past seven years, A.J.’s “Croce Plays Croce” tour has sold out performing arts centers across America.

A.J. is hitting the road again this year in celebration of two of Jim Croce’s legendary albums, 1973’s Life and Times, and his final release, I Got A Name, in addition to songs from You Don’t Mess Around With Jim. The “Croce Plays Croce 50th Anniversary” show features a legendary band including drummer Gary Mallaber (Van Morrison/Steve Miller Band), bassist/singer David Barard (Dr. John), and guitarist/violinist James Pennebaker (Delbert McClinton), accompanied by background singers Jackie Wilson and Katrice Donaldson. The shows will also feature a moving multi-media presentation and will include all of Jim’s chart-topping hits, as well as many deep cuts.

Over the past three decades, A.J. has established his reputation as a piano player and vocal stylist. From his 10 studio albums, it’s clear that he holds an abiding love for all types of musical genres: Blues, Soul, Pop, Jazz and Rock n’ Roll. A virtuosic piano player, Croce toured with B.B. King and Ray Charles before reaching the age of 21, and over his career, he has performed with a wide range of musicians, from Willie Nelson to the Neville Brothers, to Béla Fleck and Ry Cooder.

After many years of resisting numerous offers to perform Jim’s music, A.J. began mixing a few of Jim’s songs into his regular tour performances. The key to making it work was not simply covering the songs, but bringing his own style and flair to them, infusing a fresh, spontaneous excitement.

On the first “Croce plays Croce” tour, A.J. discovered a fascinating phenomenon. “People often come in thinking the show will be a quiet, nostalgic, precious display of my father’s songs – but it’s not precious at all. We give them a really energetic, live show. The audience expects one thing, but by the time they leave, they realize they got something completely different -- and they leave not only with a new perspective on Jim, but as fans of mine as well.”

The two Jim Croce albums that turn 50 in 2023 are Life and Times, originally released in January of 1973, delivering Billboard’s Hot 100 #1 single, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown,” and I Got A Name, his final studio album with the title song being released a week after his tragic plane crash on September 20, 1973. The 50th Anniversary show will include songs from You Don’t Mess Around With Jim, which spent 93 weeks on the charts.

The “Croce Plays Croce” shows have renewed interest in Jim Croce and garnered praise for A.J. “I think they come as a Jim Croce fan but leave as fans of mine. That’s something that has also made this whole experience really amazing,” A.J. said.

PARK INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR MUSIC

When Stanislav loudenitch first started the Park International Center for Music, he began with a simple concept. Find exceptional music teachers, and give them the time, tools, focus, and dedication needed to transform exceptional students into masters themselves. An internationally-recognized Van Cliburn gold medalist, Ioudenitch assembled a team that shared his world-class skills and his passion for teaching. Other outstanding programs have great master instructors. But no other American conservatory lets those masters devote the time to their students like they do at Park ICM. Not even storied programs like Juilliard, Curtis, or Eastman.

Come experience the birth of our international stars. Visit ICM.PARK.EDU for our concert schedule today.

“These featured soloists from Park University’s International Center for Music represent not only the quality of performance in Kansas City, but the future of it, too.”

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

The Kauffman Center is equipped with advanced life-safety early alert systems. Each performance hall is designed with emergency exits in case of an evacuation. In the event of severe weather, shelter in place inside the hall, not in a lobby area, and await further instructions. *

In the event of an emergency, the performance will be interrupted. Horns and strobes will sound. Emergency instructions will be delivered from the stage.

Please remain seated as staff use an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of the alarm.* Should an evacuation be necessary, lighted red (Muriel Kauffman Theatre) and green (Helzberg Hall) exit signs will lead patrons to one of eight emergency exit paths.

Patrons with mobility limitations and/or those who are not able to navigate stairs should remain in the venue near one of the marked “Emergency Evacuation Assistance” areas. First responders will evacuate those requiring assistance immediately upon their arrival.

Elevators, primary entrances and the Brandmeyer Great Hall staircase are NOT used in the case of an emergency evacuation.

For more information on emergency evacuation procedures, visit

Kauffman Center’s emergency egress plan, which includes an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of an alarm, was developed with the assistance of the Kansas City, MO Fire Marshall’s Office.

Be at the Center of it all:

Darlus Wolff | “My daughter suggested that I volunteer here at the Kauffman Center It has been a great idea because of all the wonderful people I have met. I am reminded of a biography I read about Mr. Kauffman and how he said his employees were family That is how I feel about my fellow volunteers and even the patrons we serve every performance The best part of volunteering is the world class performances Thank you for letting me be a part of this beautiful place.”

Laurel Downey | “It is my privilege to be a volunteer at the Kauffman Center. This place still takes my breath away Thank you to all the visionaries in Kansas City and around the world that helped create this jewel of cultural arts. Thank you to all the staff, talented musicians, dancers, singers and artists that bring such a variety of performances for everyone to enjoy. And a big thank you to all my fellow volunteers that have become such great friends What a joyful and memorable place to be!”

Fonda Sprengelmeyer | “When I first retired from a job that I loved, I knew my first energy had to be volunteering back there, but I still wanted more to fill my free time I had been volunteering for the Kansas City Symphony, Ballet and Opera at the Lyric and while watching the Kauffman being built I volunteered early and anxiously waited It was like winning the lottery to be among that first group of volunteers People here are friendly, warm and accepting It feels like home, like family.”

Ken Hagen | “Volunteering at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. . . it’s the people. It’s the seven-year-old at a student

matinee who said “This is beautiful,” and the eighty-year-old attending the Kansas City Symphony for a Sunday matinee, the patrons in cowboy boots and blue jeans for Texas Tenors and patrons in tuxedos for opening night at the Lyric Opera or Kansas City Ballet It’s patrons in Harry Potter or Star Wars costumes, the proud grandparents at graduations or an out-of-town visitor who just wanted to admire the building Each brings something special to volunteering but the best “people” experiences are with the Kauffman Center people: performance leads, team captains and especially the family of volunteers.”

Bob Fierst | ”Upon retirement, I decided to give back and volunteer at the Kauffman Center What I did not expect was that this would become, so far, a 10-year experience that would provide me a feeling of pride and usefulness. The experiences not only expanded my appreciation of the arts but I was part of a new family that shared the desire to make our community a better place. What I have given has come back multifold To consider myself a small part of this organization is something that is hard to put in words and give a value to It is a blessing to be a part of the Kauffman family ”

Kauffman Center Legacy Society

Legacy Society members have made planned gifts to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, helping the organization plan for the future.

Barbara and Doug Cusick became Kauffman Center supporters long before ground was broken for the building.

“We were inspired by the many ways the Kauffman family has shown its support for Kansas City,” said Doug, “and we wanted to do what we could for the new performing arts venue.” Barbara and Doug opened their home and their unique collection of antique automatic musical instruments for fundraising events. They also made a generous capital gift, purchased a seat plaque in honor of his mother and contributed to the Jane Chu Arts Endowment.

Now Doug and Barbara have looked ahead by making the Kauffman Center the future recipient of a life insurance policy their family no longer needs. “It’s as easy as changing the beneficiary’s name on a whole life insurance policy,” Doug explained. “We see this as a legacy from our entire family, that makes the performing arts and a vibrant downtown available to our kids, grandkids and beyond.”
