Ella Al-Shamahi: Anthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi is a National Geographic Explorer, paleoanthropologist, evolutionary biologist...and stand-up comic. Her debut book The Handshake is a Times and Sunday Times Book of the Year. She specializes in Neanderthals, caves and expeditions in hostile, disputed and unstable territories. She almost exclusively works in places it is hard to get insurance, such as Iraq, Yemen, Nagorno-Karabakh, and places she can’t publicly admit to. From heading up exploratory expeditions to joining cave excavations, the conditions can be unusual, from avoiding landmines to wearing a burqa for security reasons.

Al-Shamahi believes that this is a risk worth taking because huge parts of the planet’s scientific potential are being ignored due to instability. She argues that realistically, these places will become the frontline of science and exploration. She also believes that development is not just about aid, it is also about science and empowering locals. As a stand-up, Al-Shamahi uses comedy as a coping strategy, but also to communicate science. She passionately believes that knowledge and science can empower locals and help with sustainable development.

Al-Shamahi has also been featured twice in National Geographic magazine and was a co-guest editor for the first UK edition of the magazine. She has also been extensively featured in publications like The Times, The Telegraph and The Sun. She has contributed to radio programs such as BBC Radio 4’s Midweek and BBC World Service’s Outlook. She holds a BSc in Genetics from University College London, an MSc in Taxonomy and Biodiversity from Imperial College London/Natural History Museum and is currently undertaking a Ph.D. in Neanderthal rates of evolution at University College London. Her book The Handshake is about the history and anthropology of the handshake.

Al-Shamahi also performs nerdy stand-up internationally and has taken four stand-up shows to the Edinburgh Fringe. She was a 2019 TED main stage speaker and her talk has been viewed more than 2 million times. .15.

Michael Davie: Journalist Armed with a global perspective and a burning desire to tell the difficult stories unfolding on the world stage, Michael Davie is one of the freshest voices in documentary filmmaking today. His ease in front of and behind the camera sets him apart from the pack. Film producer, director, writer and keen storyteller, Davie chases dramatic, real-life stories—from the glaciers of Denali to the frontlines of the Balkans, and into the heart of Africa. Recently, he co-created Oprah Winfrey’s landmark Belief series. At National Geographic Television, he created World Diaries, a series that took viewers into some of the planet’s most dangerous places. Most recently, National Geographic sent him to Australia to document the bushfires.

Davie’s feature documentary The Choir, about music in a South African prison, won the AFI Best Director Award. His films War Child and Gorilla Murders both received Emmy Awards for outstanding investigative journalism and for the film Liberia: American Dream? Davie and his team received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow and Columbia DuPont awards.

A true global citizen, Davie was born in Rhodesia (modern-day Zimbabwe), then spent most of his childhood and early adulthood in Australia, where his father was a bush doctor on Norfolk Island. He currently resides in Istanbul, Turkey.

Jean Fruth: Sports Photographer Jean Fruth’s trajectory as one of baseball’s preeminent photographers has taken her on a round-the-horn tour of the sport’s most indelible landmarks. Growing up in New York City, Fruth’s earliest memories are of her grandfather listening to his beloved New York Mets on a tiny transistor radio. In school, Fruth fell in love with the alchemy of photography. When she moved west as a young adult she immersed herself in the business, becoming a portrait photographer in the wine country of California. When life got busy and she found herself spending hours at the field of her son’s Little League games, she started shooting the action, eventually submitting images to the local paper.

That’s when the local editor spotted her keen eye for sports photography and invited her to submit more. Fruth tried her hand at different sports but found that nothing compared to the art and poetry of baseball.

Fruth would eventually meet legendary San Francisco sports photographer Michael Zagaris “Z,” as he’s known in the sports world. Z took Fruth under his wing and invited her to shoot alongside him at the Oakland Coliseum—the only major ballpark without a railing in front of its dugout. Fruth began producing front page-worthy shots, then the real magic happened when Fruth stepped away from the pack and began shooting from novel perspectives, including the cheapest seat in the house, the upper deck of the outfield. These images captured the attention of the MLB and the NFL, and would guide the next decade of Fruth’s career, which she spent covering the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics and San Francisco 49ers. In between seasons, when most sports photographers take a break from the longest season in sports, Fruth found herself chasing it, covering the Caribbean League in winter months, then traveling with La Vida Baseball, a digital media company, that tells the story of Latino baseball across the United States and Latin America. In 2014, Fruth was invited to give a presentation of her grassroots baseball images at the Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown, where she grew even more convinced of the unique ability of baseball to reflect the culture of where it’s played.

Eventually, she approached the Baseball Hall of Fame and proposed that they hire her as their traveling photographer to connect a contemporary voice with the museum’s marketing and rich history, ultimately hoping to attract a younger audience through social media.

Through her journey, Fruth has recognized the transformative power of baseball to help young people develop strength, skills, friendships and to learn and practice the concept of teamwork. As a result, together with her partner, former Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson, she formed a non-profit organization called Grassroots Baseball, to promote and celebrate the amateur game around the globe, with a focus on encouraging interest and participation at the youngest levels. She is documenting their journey in a series of books, starting with Grassroots Baseball: Where Legends Begin with an introduction

David McLain: Photographer McLain honed his photographic chops shooting feature-length assignments around the world for National Geographic magazine. The stories varied but the mandate was always the same: work with every kind of person under any kind of condition and create timeless yet contemporary images for a client with the highest visual standards on earth.

Spending time with people who inhabit different worlds is what inspires McLain the most. He says it’s a constant reminder that people are never quite what you think they’re going to be at first glance. Filmmaking adds the tools of motion, sound and score to evoke more feeling and capture a moment in time.

Whether McLain is creating content for global brands like Apple and Sony, or for small nonprofits like Caringbridge, he anchors his work in the human story.

He believes the best stories inspire us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.

One story he has documented for more than 15 years is called The Blue Zones project. Together with author Dan Buettner, McLain travels the world to study and document those five places in the world where people are living the longest and staying the healthiest. This work has produced a number of books, including a best-selling cookbook, and stories for Nat Geo, Smithsonian and others.

McLain is also one of the original Sony Artisans of Imagery—a talented and diverse group of photographers and filmmakers who are helping Sony break new ground and reimagine what cameras can do in the 21st Century. When he’s not on the road, McLain and his family make their home in a 220-year-old farmhouse and he runs his studio out of a post and beam barn in the woods just outside of Portland, Maine.

Sylvia Earle: Oceanographer Immerse yourself in Dr. Sylvia Earle’s inspiring mission to save the ocean, one “Hope Spot” at a time. With over 7,500 hours of underwater exploration logged, Earle transcends borders and ideologies to advise world leaders on vital marine conservation laws and crisis response. Through her tireless efforts, she hopes to empower us all to understand the impact of our actions on the ocean and its fragile ecosystems. Despite the stresses we have placed upon it, Earle believes humans can also be the ocean’s greatest champions.

Come aboard and discover how we can all contribute to the ocean’s survival.

Named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress and “Hero for the Planet”

by Time magazine, accomplished scientist Earle is a staunch advocate for and eloquent champion of our ocean. Earle has achieved an impressive number of firsts—including setting the world untethered diving record, descending 1,250 feet beneath the ocean surface; and serving as the first female chief scientist for the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

She was also National Geographic’s first female explorer-in-residence and founded Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, a marine consulting firm. In 2008, Earle founded nonprofit Mission Blue for marine protection, where she is still president and chairperson. Earle holds MA and PhD degrees from Duke University and 32 honorary degrees and has received over 100 national and international honors and awards.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures The Kauffman Center is equipped with advanced life-safety early alert systems. Each performance hall is designed with emergency exits in case of an evacuation. In the event of severe weather, shelter in place inside the hall, not in a lobby area, and await further instructions.

In the event of an emergency, the performance will be interrupted. Horns and strobes will sound. Emergency instructions will be delivered from the stage.

Please remain seated as staff use an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of the alarm.* Should an evacuation be necessary, lighted red (Muriel Kauffman Theatre) and green (Helzberg Hall) exit signs will lead patrons to one of eight emergency exit paths.

Patrons with mobility limitations and/or those who are not able to navigate stairs should remain in the venue near one of the marked “Emergency Evacuation Assistance” areas. First responders will evacuate those requiring assistance immediately upon their arrival.

Elevators, primary entrances and the Brandmeyer Great Hall staircase are NOT used in the case of an emergency evacuation.

It was like winning the lottery to be among that first group of volunteers . People here are friendly, warm and accepting . It feels like home, like family .”

Ken Hagen | “Volunteering at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts . . . it’s the people . It’s the seven-year-old at a student

matinee who said “This is beautiful,” and the eighty-year-old attending the Kansas City Symphony for a Sunday matinee, the patrons in cowboy boots and blue jeans for Texas Tenors and patrons in tuxedos for opening night at the Lyric Opera or Kansas City Ballet . It’s patrons in Harry Potter or Star Wars costumes, the proud grandparents at graduations or an out-of-town visitor who just wanted to admire the building . Each brings something special to volunteering but the best “people” experiences are with the Kauffman Center people: performance leads, team captains and especially the family of volunteers .”

Bob Fierst | ”Upon retirement, I decided to give back and volunteer at the Kauffman Center . What I did not expect was that this would become, so far, a 10-year experience that would provide me a feeling of pride and usefulness . The experiences not only expanded my appreciation of the arts but I was part of a new family that shared the desire to make our community a better place .

All purchases are non-refundable except in the case of a canceled event .

Public Access Hours and Private Tours The Kauffman Center generally maintains public access hours on Fridays from 10 a .m . to 5 p .m . during which visitors may explore Brandmeyer Great Hall . Additionally, private tours led by a trained guide can be scheduled at kauffmancenter .org/tours . Tours are approximately 60 minutes in length, are available with reservations and are dependent on the Center’s schedule .

Patron Drop-off Locations For your convenience, Kauffman Center offers two passenger drop-off locations at 16th and Central Streets and on the private drive to the south of the building, accessible from Broadway Boulevard . From either drop-off location, drivers will go less than a half block to turn into undergound parking . Additionally, valet parking service is available for most performances .

Assistive Listening Devices The Kauffman Center offers Assistive Listening Devices free of charge for patrons who would benefit from amplified and clarified sound . Patrons may exchange an ID card for a device from our trained staff in the Kauffman Center’s Gift Shop in Brandmeyer Great Hall . Each device automatically adjusts to the hall and performance of the patron’s location .

Serenity Rooms Patrons who would benefit from the use of a private, relaxing environment are invited to step into one of our two Serenity Rooms . These spaces offer comfortable seating and a monitor to view the live performance, plus sensory items, dimmable lights, and an electrical wall outlet . Patrons may contact a staff member or volunteer to access this space .

Changing Tables & Family Restrooms All family restrooms feature infant changing tables . The Mezzanine family restroom features a changing table suitable for children or adults . Patrons needing a universal changing table or an additional private space to tend to medical needs should contact a staff member or volunteer for directions to the First Aid Office .

Sensory Kits Patrons who would benefit from comforting sensory resources are invited to exchange an ID card for a Sensory Kit from Coat Check on the Plaza Lobby Level .

These kits contain resources such as noise-reducing headphones, weighted lap pads, and handheld sensory items .

Kauffman Center Legacy Society Legacy Society members have made planned gifts to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, helping the organization plan for the future.

Barbara and Doug Cusick became Kauffman Center supporters long before ground was broken for the building.

“We were inspired by the many ways the Kauffman family has shown its support for Kansas City,” said Doug, “and we wanted to do what we could for the new performing arts venue.” Barbara and Doug opened their home and their unique collection of antique automatic musical instruments for fundraising events. capital gift, purchased a seat plaque in

honor of his mother and contributed to the Jane Chu Arts Endowment.

Now Doug and Barbara have looked ahead by making the Kauffman Center the future recipient of a life insurance policy their family no longer needs. “It’s as easy as changing the beneficiary’s name on a whole life insurance policy,” Doug explained. “We see this as a legacy from our entire family, that makes the performing arts and a vibrant downtown available to our kids, grandkids and beyond.”
