Dear Friends, Families, and Guests,
For more than 70 years, Starlight has shared live arts experiences from its iconic stage that inspire a wide spectrum of feelings in response to new stories, music, ideas, and themes. Shows like Jagged Little Pill are bound to spark conversation – and that’s what live theatre is meant to do!
Jagged Little Pill is an achingly beautiful show based on Alanis Morissette’s revolutionary 1995 album of the same name. It is full of stories of love, heartache, wisdom, challenge, and more.
The show’s story follows a suburban mother and her two teenaged children as they navigate the impact and complexities of addiction, modern adolescence, family, forgiveness, and healing. This is a story that you will feel – and those feelings may be as complex as the story itself. I believe in the power that music and story-telling hold to connect us in a shared human experience, and to learn about lived experiences that may be wholly unfamiliar to us.
This will be the first time this show is performed in Kansas City, and as a place known for both Broadway theatre and live music, I’m proud to present a show that gives you a powerful combination of both.
I want to thank each and every one of you who has chosen to be here tonight to experience this show with Starlight. I hope that you take away something meaningful from tonight’s story, and that it serves as a conversation-starter. I want to especially thank Starlight’s Board of Directors and our employees, partners, volunteers, and donors for their dedication to our mission to connect our community through live arts experiences that entertain, inspire, and engage.
Thank you for choosing Starlight – a uniquely Kansas City tradition of music and theatre under the stars!

POPS SERIES
New for this year — the Pops Series is now five concerts! Stage and screen star Audra McDonald kicks things off in September. Then, it’s the classic music of the James Bond movies, the high-flying Cirque Broadway acrobats on the Helzberg Hall stage and the music of Phil Collins and Genesis that defined a generation. RETURNING TO THE STARLIGHT STAGE
Growing up, Elaine Watson saw a number of shows at Starlight and enjoyed her first concert under the stars—but it wasn’t until the Blue Star Awards that she realized she wanted to be on the Starlight stage one day. She returned to the Starlight stage during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 for Raise Our Voices, a video series with a mission to amplify social awareness by providing opportunities for artists from diverse backgrounds. Now, this multiple-time Blue Star Awards nominee and winner returns to Starlight in the ensemble of the First National Tour of Jagged Little Pill, playing August 1 – 6.
Starlight is thrilled to welcome Elaine back to Kansas City for this production and is proud to have been part of her journey.

57 2023 MAKES AN IMPACT Economic Impact guests, including all 50 states, one of 100 nights in 2019, an estimated back into the economy beyond the admission. Community Investment 28,594 Kansas City area residents were impacted by community engagement programs providing arts education and access to the arts in 2019. Landmark Preservation Starlight is the oldest and largest continually operating performing arts organization in KC. Since 1992, $35 million has been privately invested in the city-owned theatre, which receives less than 2% of its annual revenue from public funding. THE IMPACT OF A GIFT No matter the size, your one-time gift makes an immediate impact. $15 $150 $25/mo $50/mo Promote arts accessibility by covering the cost of a free Broadway ticket through the Community Tickets program. Combine the healing power of the arts with the magic of Starlight by funding one local artist in a Just Imagine performance. Ensure the arts are accessible to all by supporting the cost of a sign language interpreter at a live event. Celebrate the achievements in local high school theatre by funding one of many scholarships awarded to students who engage with theatre both on and off the stage. Your monthly gift maximizes its impact over time

LEAVING A LEGACY
Making a planned gift through Starlight’s Legacy Society ensures that lasting memories will continue to be made year after year.
WANT TO LEAVE A LEGACY AT STARLIGHT? HERE’S HOW:
ADOPT-A-SEAT
Our Adopt-A-Seat program leaves your mark at Starlight Theatre on a seat(s) that you adopt and personalize with a dedication plaque.
MAKE AN ENDOWMENT GIFT
Gifts that are invested. Each year, a portion of the income from the investment is used to address immediate needs at Starlight, while any remaining funds are reinvested to help support Starlight for a lifetime.
JOIN THE LEGACY SOCIETY
Join these dedicated members who all have one thing in common – they have made a planned gift because they love the Starlight experience and appreciate what Starlight means to the community. “Being a part of Starlight’s Legacy Society is a source of tremendous pride in really feeling that you are participating in the future and knowing that other generations, future generations, your kids, your grandkids, your neighbors, your friends, people all through the city will have a chance to experience the stellar entertainment and participate in programs that make art accessible to all Kansas Citians.”
-Wendy Burgess, Legacy Donor
For more information about how you can leave a legacy at Starlight, contact Donor Relations Manager Juliana Tran-Castillo at (816) 997-1175 or juliana.tran-castillo@kcstarlight.com.

Providing care to people is a privilege. I never forget that.”
- Becky N. Lowry, MD Physician Internal Medicine
For me, there’s nothing more rewarding than the meaningful connections I make with my patients. Maybe it’s growing up in a small town where those personal values remain strong. Or maybe it’s the belief, shared with all of my co-workers, that people come first. Whatever it is, the opportunity to provide care is a privilege I never forget.
