gift. don’t take that lightly.”

I like to say that I don’t just care for newborn babies, I care for the understandably worried parents who can’t take their babies home just yet. I always let parents know their precious little gift is in the best possible place, then look forward to the joy on their faces when their babies meet new milestones. It’s the same joy I feel in helping make that day possible.

AFRICA

The Drum

The opening scene pays homage to the Motherland. From the horn lines to halftime, from jazz to hip-hop, from America to Asia, there would be no “Drumline” and no HBCU Marching Band without Africa.

SHOUT IT OUT Pep Rally

Our drum majors will give you a little razzle and dazzle just to get things started. Be prepared for a big “SHOCK” as the band gives a high-energy rendition of “Shout It Out” from the hit movie, Drumline, during our pre-game pep rally.

AMERICAN SOUL

Our DRUMLine Live vocalists will perform legendary tunes from classic American Soul artists of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, featuring the sounds of Tina Turner, the Supremes, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and James Brown.

THE KING

The Best of Michael Jackson Michael Jackson brought his amazing talents to the football field through his performance at Super Bowl XXVII and halftimes have never been the same. Be prepared to “Beat It” with DRUMLine Live as we give you a “Thriller” highlight reel from the King of Pop.

“DRUMLine” BLING

These drummers are hip and magical. Check out their flashy stick work as they perform drumline cadences to the top tunes of today’s hip-hop music.

INTERMISSION

SNAP YOUR FINGERS

The pageantry of HBCU marching bands has been influenced by the sounds of jazz, ragtime and big band music.

Snap your fingers as you watch our old school marching band perform classics popularized by musicians of the early 20th century.

EXPRESS YOURSELF

At HBCUs the best musical moments sometimes occur on the football field before or after band practice. Watch our virtuoso drummers, dancers and musicians express themselves through music and dance.

IT’S HALFTIME!

Salute to Prince Rogers Nelson Ladies and Gentlemen, you are about to witness the sensational, the astounding, the breathtaking, and The Greatest Show On Stage! Nothing can prepare you for what you are about to see. Enjoy HALFTIME with a special salute to Prince!

THE BATTLE

The drum battle begins with each extraordinary percussionist demonstrating spectacular style and technique. However, there can only be one champion. We’ll let the audience decide!

FUNKY FOOT WORK

From Funk to Hip-Hop

The DRUMLine Live band will climax the Halftime dance routine with dazzling choreography and musical selections that highlight the best of the 80s, 90s and 2000s Hip-Hop music.

COME JOIN THE PARADE Post Game Party

As the football game ends, the Post Game Party begins. Most HBCU homecoming parades and post game parties resemble the huge street celebration in New Orleans, Louisiana called Mardi Gras. It’s time for everybody to join the parade and party in the aisles with the DRUMLine Live Band, HBCU style! Meet us in the lobby!

Fewer Treatments. Better Outcomes.

The Kauffman Center would like to congratulate and thank the Diamond Level volunteers who have contributed more than 2,500 volunteer service hours.

When I started volunteering at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, I had no idea how much I would love the whole experience! From the first usher training classes to reaching Diamond level, it has been a wonderful and rewarding time.

Getting to watch the performances was a big factor in volunteering. But I didn’t realize that it is not just the Symphony, Ballet and Opera. There is such a wide variety from touring Broadway shows, rock, pop and country bands, to solo artists, and the list goes on and on. And such a wide range of performances brings a wide range of patrons which you get to interact with.

But what surprised me the most is the other volunteers! Where else could you meet such a fantastic group of volunteers from every background, profession and life experience? They all have the ‘volunteer spirit’ in their hearts and it shows! I have made so many good friends and look forward to making so many more!

Rhodes, Kauffman Center Diamond Level volunteer

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES

The Kauffman Center is equipped with advanced life-safety early alert systems. Each performance hall is designed with emergency exits in case of an evacuation. In the event of severe weather, shelter in place inside the hall, not in a lobby area, and await further instructions.

In the event of an emergency, the performance will be interrupted. Horns and strobes will sound. Emergency instructions will be delivered from the stage.

Please remain seated as staff use an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of the alarm.* Should an evacuation be necessary, lighted red (Muriel Kauffman Theatre) and green (Helzberg Hall) exit signs will lead patrons to one of eight emergency exit paths.

Patrons who are not able to safely and comfortably navigate stairs should remain in the venue near one of the marked “Emergency Evacuation Assistance” areas. First responders will evacuate those requiring assistance immediately upon their arrival.

Elevators, primary entrances and the Brandmeyer Great Hall staircase are NOT used in the case of an emergency evacuation.

For more information on emergency evacuation procedures, visit kauffmancenter.org/policies.

*Kauffman Center’s emergency egress plan, which includes an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of an alarm, was developed with the assistance of the Kansas City, MO Fire Marshall’s Office.

HIGH KINGS

The High Kings, compromising of Finbarr Clancy, Darren Holden, Paul O’ Brien and Brian Dunphy have held the position as the distinctive voice of Irish Folk music across the world for the last 15 years. As they continue to sell out venues around the world to an evergrowing army of loyal fans, The High Kings show no signs of stopping.

2024 has been a landmark year for The High Kings. They surpassed 1.6 million monthly followers on Spotify. Over 3 million worldwide and garnered over 5 million streams in just one week this March. In 2023, The High Kings celebrated 15 years together by releasing 15 brand new tracks to their fans, which was followed by the release of their 8th Studio Album The Road Not Taken. Since its release in June 2023, The Road Not Taken has achieved over 14 million streams. It has reached the number one position for independent albums in Ireland, number one in Folk, number two across all genres and number two in singer-songwriter in the USA.

Now, following the resounding success of The Road Not Taken, The High Kings have just announced the launch of the ‘Step It Out World Tour,’ in Germany, followed by The UK, Ireland and Scotland, USA and Australia, before heading back to the UAE again.

THE ELDERS

The Elders remain one of the top Celtic rock bands in the US after 24 years because of their timeless sound. Their fans feel connected to the band because of their passion, great melodies, unique harmonies, unparalleled musicianship and strong song writing.

That songwriting began in 1998 when two musicians moved back from LA to Kansas City to play Irish music. Norm Dahlor and Brent Hoad, played in numerous bands but their American and Celtic folk rock roots were calling and The Elders were born.

Well Alright Then, their 9th studio album released on April 29, 2022, was conceived after the band retired and the country experienced a lockdown. During that time the band continued to meet, write and sing, but never intended to record. That is, until guitarist Steve Phillips asked them to release an album in his honor. (Before Phillips passed in 2020, he recorded all of his vocals and musical parts.)

From an Emmy winning DVD, to an induction into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame and a PBS concert televised across the US, The Elders are still going strong because of their powerful, personal and musical chemistry.

The Elders are Ian Byrne, lead vocals and percussion, Kian Byrne, vocals, drums, bass guitar, acoustic guitar and mandolin, Norm Dahlor, vocals, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, Diana Ladio, vocals, fiddle, William “Liam” Latas, vocals, lead guitar, acoustic guitar and Daniel Loftus, vocals, keyboards, bass guitar.

The High Kings: Step It Out World Tour with The Elders is underwritten in part by the Haverty Family Foundation.

PINK MARTINI

In 1994 in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, Thomas Lauderdale was working in local politics and attending every political fundraiser under the sun. Lauderdale was dismayed to find the music at these events underwhelming and lackluster. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world –crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994. Pink Martini provides beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers for causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, the environment, libraries, public broadcasting, education and parks.

One year later, Lauderdale called China Forbes, a Harvard classmate who was living in New York City, and asked her to join Pink Martini as the lead singer and collaborator. Their first song “Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler)” became an overnight sensation in France, was nominated for “Song of the Year” at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards and is still the band’s number one song. Featuring a dozen musicians, with songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages on six continents. After making its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998, the band has gone on to play with more than 50 orchestras around the world, including multiple engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the BBC

Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2014, Pink Martini was inducted into both the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.

Pink Martini has released 11 studio albums on its own independent label Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog), selling over 3 million albums worldwide. In 2019, the band released two EPs featuring the vocals of Pink Martini’s newest members Jimmie Herrod and Edna Vazquez. Both vocalists have toured with the band for the past year and are officially part of the group with the release of Herrod’s EP Tomorrow and Vaquez’s Besame Mucho, both of which were co-produced by Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes. In 2024, the band celebrated its 30th anniversary.

CHINA FORBES

China Forbes was born and raised in Cambridge, Mass. and graduated cum laude from Harvard, majoring in Visual Arts and English, with a minor in Theater. After graduation, and before being lured west to sing with Pink Martini by Harvard friend and classmate Thomas Lauderdale, Forbes performed off Broadway, in New York regional theatre and as a singer/songwriter in New York clubs.

Forbes became the lead singer for Pink Martini in 1995 and has co-written many of the bands most beloved songs with Lauderdale, starting with “Sympathique” and continuing to the most recent singles “Lemonade Song” and “Let’s Be Friends.” She is the recipient of the 2022 Ella Fitzgerald Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival; previous winners include Diana Ross, Etta James and Liza Minelli.

KEB’ MO’

It’s a little over 2,000 miles from Compton to Nashville, but drop the needle on Keb’ Mo’s captivating new album, Good To Be, and you can make the trip in a cool threeand-a-half-minutes flat.

Written partially in Nashville and partially in the Compton house Keb’ grew up in, Good To Be is a celebration of roots and resilience, of growth and gratitude, of hope and memory. The songs here draw on country, soul and blues to forge a sound that transcends genre and geography, weaving together past and present into a heartwarming tapestry spanning more than forty years of sonic evolution. Though Keb’ worked with a wide variety of collaborators on the project—country legend Vince Gill produced three tracks, while famed producer Tom Hambridge (B.B. King, Buddy Guy) helmed several more, and special guests like Darius Rucker, Kristin Chenoweth and Old Crow Medicine Show appear throughout—it remains a deeply cohesive work, one anchored by the fivetime GRAMMY winner’s magnetic vocal delivery and relentless optimism.

ABOUT SHAWN

In an era when female singer-songwriters are ever more ubiquitous, Shawn Colvin stands out as a singular and enduring talent. Her songs are slow-release works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners. As a storyteller, Colvin is both keen and warm-hearted, leavening even the toughest tales with tenderness, empathy and a searing sense of humor. In the 30 years since the release of her debut album, Colvin has won three GRAMMY Awards, released thirteen albums, written a critically acclaimed memoir, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures and created a remarkable canon of work.

Colvin was born in Vermillion, South Dakota, where she lived until she was eight. A small-town childhood in the university town of Carbondale, IL. drew her to the guitar by the age of 10. She made her first public appearance on campus

For Keb’ Mo’, that journey began nearly half a century ago, when he landed his first major gig in Papa John Creach’s band at the age of 21. Over the course of the next 20 years, Keb’ would go on to establish himself as a respected guitarist, songwriter, and arranger, and though he recorded a one-off album in 1980 under his birth name, Kevin Moore, it wasn’t until 1994 that he would introduce the world to Keb’ Mo’ with the release of his widely acclaimed self-titled debut. Critics were quick to take note of Keb’s modern, genre-bending take on old school sounds, and two years later, he garnered his first GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album with Just Like You. “No matter what, I’m going to maintain my optimism,” Keb’ reflects. “I’m going to maintain my peace.”

at the University of Illinois at age 15. By the late 1970’s Colvin was singing in a Western Swing band in Austin, TX.—the city she now calls home. She moved to New York at the decade’s end as a member of the Buddy Miller Band where she met producer, guitarist and co-writer John Leventhal. Leventhal inspired Colvin to find her own voice as a songwriter. She began honing her skill and was soon signed to Columbia Records. Her first album, Steady On, produced by Leventhal, won the GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording.

Over the course of three decades, Shawn Colvin has established herself as a captivating performer and a revered storyteller, well-deserving of the commendation of her peers and the devoted audiences who have been inspired by her artistry. As she enters her thirtieth year as a songwriter and performer, she continues to reaffirm her status as a vital voice in music.

KAUFFMAN CENTER LEGACY SOCIETY

Legacy Society members have made planned gifts to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, helping the organization plan for the future.

Barbara and Doug Cusick became Kauffman Center supporters long before ground was broken for the building.

“We were inspired by the many ways the Kauffman family has shown its support for Kansas City,” said Doug, “and we wanted to do what we could for the new performing arts venue.” Barbara and Doug opened their home and their unique collection of antique automatic musical instruments for fund-raising events. They also made a generous capital gift, purchased a seat plaque in honor of his mother and contributed to the Jane Chu Arts Endowment.

Now Doug and Barbara have looked ahead by making the Kauffman Center the future recipient of a life insurance policy their family no longer needs. “It’s as easy as changing the beneficiary’s name on a whole life insurance policy,” Doug explained. “We see this as a legacy from our entire family, that makes the performing arts and a vibrant downtown available to our kids, grandkids and beyond.”

PARK UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR MUSIC

When Stanislav loudenitch first started the Park International Center for Music, he began with a simple concept. Find exceptional music teachers, and give them the time, tools, focus, and dedication needed to transform exceptional students into masters themselves. An internationally-recognized Van Cliburn gold medalist, Ioudenitch assembled a team that shared his world-class skills and his passion for teaching. Other outstanding programs have great master instructors. But no other American conservatory lets those masters devote the time to their students like they do at Park ICM.

Come experience the birth of our international stars. Visit ICM.PARK.EDU for our concert schedule today.
