ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S NOTE
Welcome to Kansas City Repertory Theatre!
I’m so glad you’re here for this thrilling new adaptation of Dracula, created by the dynamic artists, Vanessa Severo and Joanie Schultz. Together, these two exceptional artists have cracked open one of the most enduring gothic legends and reimagined it through a lens of empowerment, sensuality, and female agency.
Traditionally, the women in this story have been cast as victims, as shadows, as silent figures in the orbit of Dracula’s myth. Vanessa and Joanie boldly flip that script, placing the women at the center, giving them voice, complexity, and power. What emerges is a Dracula that feels both timeless and startlingly new — a story about fear, desire, secrets, and survival told in a way that resonates now.
At KCRep, we’re passionate about championing artists who dare to challenge the familiar and invite us to see with fresh eyes and perspective. I’m deeply proud to share Vanessa, Joanie and this world class group of designers and actors work with you, and I'm grateful that you’re here to experience this reawakening of Dracula.
Enjoy the journey into the dark — and the light.
See you at the theatre!

Stuart Carden

OUR LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
One of the ways we practice our values is through Land
Acknowledgement — a formal statement that recognizes and respects Indigenous peoples as the traditional stewards of the land. Acknowledging the land is an expression of gratitude and appreciation to those whose

territory we reside on, and a way to show awareness of Indigenous land rights in our daily lives.
Scan the QR code to read KCRep’s ever-evolving Land Acknowledgement which we began developing after producing the world premiere of Native American playwright Larissa FastHorse’s What Would Crazy Horse Do? in 2017 on our Copaken Stage.
KCRep is also proud to be part of the Four Directions Native Playwright Residency Program. This collaborative initiative includes four arts organizations: the Great Plains Theatre Commons (GPTC), Tofte Lake Center, Tulsa Artists Fellowship, and Kansas City Repertory Theatre (KCRep). Each organization hosts a weeklong residency for a selected Native playwright and their work over the course of a year. Each residency takes place in a different region of the country, offering a unique focus and environment to support the development of the playwright’s work.

HISTORY

KCRep enters it’s 62nd season as source of inspiration to thousands of our nation’s best artists and to millions of Americans in Kansas City and beyond.
Missouri Repertory Theatre was founded in 1964 by Dr. Patricia A. McIlrath, who is among a select few pioneers of the regional theater movement who believed that theater could change the world and could change our town. Kansas City’s citizens continue to benefit from Dr. Mac’s passionate commitment to artistic excellence, innovation, education, and community transformation. Under her direction, KC’s theatre fans enjoyed many memorable shows, including an unforgettable 1983 production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Dr. Mac’s vision for providing professional experience to early career artists continues today through our partnership with UMKC.
Following Dr. Mac’s retirement in 1985, George Keathley was
appointed as Artistic Director. During his tenure, and through his partnership with Executive Director James D. Costin, MRT was established as the pinnacle of artistic achievement for local theatre artists, creating a legacy of excellence through work in the civic community and with legendary MRT productions such as Dracula and Richard III.
In 2000, Peter Altman joined MRT as Artistic Director for a sevenyear tenure. His vision included laying the groundwork to promote the city more aggressively as a center for nationally recognized theatre artists, and he spearheaded changing the theatre’s name to Kansas City Repertory Theatre in 2006 to help achieve this goal. He also helped create KCRep’s second permanent performance venue, Copaken Stage, in Kansas City’s downtown Power & Light District.
Eric Rosen was hired as Producing Artistic Director in 2007. During his tenure, he was instrumental in

cultivating a national reputation and brand for KCRep and the city as a destination for reimagined classics such as Into the Woods and Evita, and critically acclaimed new works, including Clay, Venice, and Between the Lines.
In 2013, KCRep returned to the co-CEO structure when Rosen was partnered with Executive Director Angela Lee Gieras. Together, they led the company through a successful campaign for, and renovation of Spencer Theatre, crafted a five-year, $5 million campaign that increased investment in audiences, new works, and education, and rebranded the organization.
In 2019, director, producer, and educator Stuart Carden joined KCRep as its fifth Artistic Director. Deeply committed to centering KCRep in this region, Stuart believes the arts play a crucial role in strengthening communities. With an eye towards creating transformative theater experiences

for all, Stuart brought KCRep productions to the grounds of the World War I Museum and Memorial, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and Roanoke Park. Further expanding our reach, in 2022 Stuart launched KCRep for All, our expansive community tour that takes KCRep to community centers, libraries, and other public spaces all over the region. He strives to provide greater access to our art form and to reflect the passions, curiosities, and stories of the diverse communities that make KC such a vibrant city.
In 2024, Angela Gieras departed KCRep after 12 years, and in 2025, Jeremy Dewey joined KCRep as Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees strategic management, operational oversight and external relations to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives.

Q & A with V A NESS A SEVERO & JO A NIE SCHULTZ
Interview by JANA LILES Director of Marketing & Communications
Joanie: Exactly. The novel is full of vice, secrets, lies, and addiction — themes that are still incredibly relevant today. Every character in our version of Dracula carries a shadow. No one is innocent, and I love that. It feels honest.
Q: What first drew you to Dracula as a story worth retelling now?
A: Vanessa: I have always found something deeply terrifying about immortality. The option to choose it may sound enticing at first, but then you're stuck in your own personal hell. Watching others you love live — and then leave. While you are trapped in a hell of your own making. How does one reckon with that? Do you live in it alone, or bring in others, because misery loves company? The choice is dangerous, and that's where the story lives for me.
Q: When you approached this adaptation, what did you want to uncover or emphasize that often gets overlooked in traditional versions?
A: Joanie: One of the biggest challenges was that women are basically objects in the novel — one-dimensional and often sidelined. We wanted to disrupt that.
Vanessa: Older versions of Dracula pigeonhole the female characters as weak, valued mostly for their beauty and innocence. We threw those rules out. We stripped the story down to its bones and reimagined it as a kind of high-stakes chess match — where the Queen might just be the most powerful player.

Joanie Schultz (left) & Vanessa Severo. Photo: Joe Mazza
Joanie: Also, the novel is epistolary — letters, journals, clippings. None of that is inherently dramatic, so every adaptation has to invent. That gave us freedom: to center different voices, to fill in the silences, to reclaim agency where the novel withheld it.
Q: How did the two of you come together on this project?
A: Vanessa: Joanie and I collaborate in a way that is like a conversation without words. We can compliment each other creatively, and it's kismet. So in taking on a female-forward Dracula, it was easy. We knew what story we wanted to tell, and we saw it visually, immediately.
Joanie: What she said! We have a way of creating together which is completely symbiotic. The idea to take this source material and make the women the subject, not the object, rose really organically and we ran with it.
Q: What role does gender, power, or desire play in your reimagining of the story?
A: Joanie & Vanessa: They’re at the center of everything. Gender in this adaptation is fluid — it slips, reshapes, and destabilizes old power structures. Desire, too, is a driving force: dangerous, liberating, and often taboo. At its core, this story is about claiming agency — over one’s body, identity, and fate.
Q: Are there particular influences — literary, cinematic, or theatrical — that shaped your vision for the piece?

Vanessa Severo as Frida Kahlo in KCRep's 2019 production of Frida…A Self-Portrait. Photo: Cory Weaver
A: Vanessa: I have always loved old-timey theater magic. Shadow work, simple acts of magic done with a string, fog, and of course, Nosferatu. Dracula is as much of the earth as he is spirit, and blurring those things visually is astounding.
Joanie: Analog theater magic is so fulfilling; it’s fun to figure out how to make magic happen. Also we were, of course, influenced by Bram Stoker’s novel — we were interested in the tension, the sensuality, and the shadows between the lines.
Joanie & Vanessa: From the first workshops to our premiere production and now this new staging in Kansas City, Dracula has been shaped by the extraordinary artists who’ve joined us along the way. Each collaborator has brought insight and imagination that pushed the piece further than we could have envisioned alone. In this current production, our creative team of world-class designers and theatermakers continue that legacy — expanding the world of the play with bold ideas, rigorous craft, and a shared spirit of invention.
Q: How do you want the audience to feel when they walk out of this production?
A: Vanessa: Like a secret has passed between us.
Joanie: Yes, haunted. But not just by fear. We hope the audience walks away questioning their desires, their beliefs about control and freedom, even their own boundaries. Ideally, they’ll carry this Dracula with them like a secret they can’t quite shake.
Q: What’s next for both of you? How can our audiences follow your journey?
A: Joanie & Vanessa: Joanie is directing and Vanessa is movement directing Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women next at Portland Center Stage and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Vanessa’s solo show Frida…A Self Portrait, that Joanie collaborated on as director, continues performing at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and ACT Seattle this spring and summer. This winter, Vanessa will also direct Everybody at KCAT.
And this isn’t the end of our collaborations — we’re already scheming our next big project together. You can keep up with us at vanessasevero.com and joanieschultz.com.

STUDENT

“My students were deeply moved by the show, and so passionate about how much it meant to them. Most of my students live in the same community as the playwright . The show opened up a deep discussion about family and community and living our dreams. They continue to talk about the show and discuss its themes long after seeing it. KCRep is always going to be on my list of priority field trips because of the lasting effects it has on my students.” — Teacher who brought students to see Broke-ology

As our world grows more complex, we want to empower young people to feel free and creative, full of confidence and spirit to express themselves and feel strong. We want them to laugh and feel joy, learn about and feel on behalf of others, and know their own value in their world as smart, curious, creative and empowered individuals. KCRep seeks to play a positive role in the life of every student we encounter in a workshop or in the theatre. The arts open up expression, fuel belonging, and make connections. The arts meet the fragile, but deep, spirit of each young person — naturally open-hearted and bright-minded.
Summer Theatre Camp welcomed both middle and high schoolers for wild and wonderful opportunities to explore theatre through scene work, mask masking, movement and much more. Taught by professional actors, the joy in the room was palpable and meaningful. They hate to say goodbye!

TS & EDUCATION

“Thank you for this summer. I had a great time with everyone. I came out of myself and felt very free in this class. “ — Summer Theatre Camper
“My middle schoolers LOVED Emma. The whole process was so smooth. They were so excited to talk to the cast and crew, too.”

once
— Teacher who brought students to see Emma

7,200 students — from 3rd grade through college from all over the region — saw a show as a part of the Student Matinee Series during KCRep’s 2024/25 season. Over 40% benefitted from our STARS fund. Without exception, a morning field trip experience is rich and alive. Over 220 students from Kansas City, KS saw Nathan Louis Jackson’s beautiful play about a KCK family, Broke-ology. The connections and emotions were powerful. The laughter, sighs, tears (yes) and applause for Once, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, A Christmas Carol and Emma were overwhelming. We never know when a song, a character, a sentence or a scene will spark a young heart and mind to understand themselves better. But we are here for it. Always.
