Principal’s Message by Leanne Gruending Here we are at the end of the year and I still have so many things to share! First, I would like to send out a huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers who have been in our school and on field trips with us the past month. May and June are incredibly busy months packed with fun activities that we could never host without parent support, SCC, teachers and EAs, Asquith Fire Dept., community coaches and LAS staff. A few exciting staffing announcements Ms. Kayla Van Caeseele will be sharing the Special Education Resource Teacher position with Ms. Jen Mason. Ms. Mason has also received a huge honour by earning the Early Years Facilitator position through the Division. Luckily, Ms. Mason is talented enough to be a SERT, Facilitator and Pre-K teacher, all while remaining at LAS. Ms. Bachmeier will

also be back from her maternity leave and Ms. DeCorby will be around our elementary end even more as her contract has been increased. As excited as I am for next year, there are a few bits of this school community that I’m going to miss - Mrs. Plummer and the Grade 12 Graduating Class. Congratulations to Ben, Thomas, Azaria, Clint, Matthew, Cauy, Mirjam, Errin, Alivia, Jeremy, Sunny, and Samara. I can’t wait to hear about the amazing things you’re doing away from LAS. My summer wish for you... Enjoy each other. Go outside. Play. Learn something new from a book. Learn something new without going anywhere near a book. Read. Explore. Recharge. Kids - be kids. Adults - you get to be kids, too! Watch something that makes you think. Create something that makes someone else think. Share what you love. Go on adventures. Learn a little bit more

about who you are and why you aren’t like anyone else. Try to figure out why that’s a good thing. Create memories. I can’t wait to hear all about it when I see you in the Fall. 3 tips to help your kids get the most out of summer (NC) While the summer vacation provides children with more freedom and a much-needed break from formal education, experts say this time of year is critical for learning and development and can contribute to their health and self-esteem. Here are three ways to ensure your child gets the most out of this break. Leave time for unstructured play. Many parents rush to fill their children’s time with scheduled activities, but don’t forget to leave space for

unstructured play. A growing body of evidence suggests that play is central to the development of the mental, physical and social skills kids need to achieve their full potential in adulthood. Spend family time. A summer holiday is not only perfect for creating lasting family memories, it can also be incredibly valuable to support your child’s self esteem. When parents make time for one-on-one interaction with their kids, it can help reinforce their sense

of self-worth and even support some areas of your child’s brain development. Introduce your children to volunteering. Much of what young ones learn about community, integrity and generosity is learned from their parents. While busy schedules and homework can be an obstacle during the school year, the summer can be a perfect opportunity to engage your children in these issues through volunteering.
