Students and staff at St. Gabriel School held their annual Sports Day, Friday at the Recreation Complex. Beautiful weather greeted the student athletes as they ran and leapt, threw, and went away with a smile and a ribbon proclaiming their skill. As the school year comes to a close, the friendly competition was a perfect way to burn off some energy!

Ministry provides funding to RCMP for Crime Reduction Teams The Ministry of Corrections and Policing is providing roughly $1.6 million to the RCMP to permanently expand the Crime Reduction Team (CRT) initiative in Saskatchewan.

This funding will be used for 14 full-time team members made up of 10 police officers and four support staff.

Funding for these positions is provided through the Provincial Policing Services Agreement, which funds 70 per cent of all RCMP positions in Saskatchewan.

These additional staff will comprise two permanent CRTs - one operating out of Prince Albert and one operating out of North Battleford - that will be established this fall. The RCMP will maintain a temporary CRT to ensure enforcement activities continue until the permanent teams are operational.

“The RCMP has seen great success with this project since they started the CRT as a pilot last February, and we’re happy to support the establishment of these two permanent teams,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said. “We look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have in Saskatchewan’s rural communities.”

The CRT’s main goal will be to conduct targeted enforcement (also known as “hotspotting”) based on intelligence, analysis of crime trends and consultations with community leaders. This may include high visibility patrols; tracking chronic offenders; tackling street-gang activity and executing arrest warrants.

“We have heard directly from our detachments and communities the value of the Crime Reduction Team,” Saskatchewan RCMP Commanding Officer A/ Commr. Curtis Zablocki said. “The team, made up of members with specialized enforcement and investigation skills, deliver focused, high-intensity policing to communities that need it most. Their efforts have yielded results, taking drugs, firearms and criminals off the streets of our Saskatchewan communities.”

The CRT will work in partnership with other

RCMP detachments and municipal law enforcement agencies to ensure a coordinated response to rural crime.

It will also collaborate with communities and other partner agencies to address root causes of crime and develop longterm solutions to ensuring community safety.

The CRT initiative began as a pilot program in early February. Since being established, it has executed 193 arrest warrants dealing with 384 Criminal Code charges.

This includes charges against 26 known gang members and affiliates.

Police chase results in arrest for suspect wanted in area robberies On June 11, Bigger, Kindersley/Kerrobert, and Turtleford RCMP, charged 31-year-old Travis Stehr of Paradise Hill following an assault that occurred on June 4.

Stehr was charged with: • Assault with a Weapon, Section 267(a) Criminal Code; • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Section 249(1)(a) Criminal Code.

Stehr was also wanted on charges stemming from incidents which occurred in September, 2017: motor vehicle theft; possession of stolen property; unauthorized use of credit card data; dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; resisting/obstructing an officer; failing to comply with probation; failure to attend court; and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

On June 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Biggar RCMP responded to information that Travis Stehr was in the

RM of Biggar. A vehicle identified as Stehr’s was located, and members activated their emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle failed to stop for police and a pursuit was initiated.

Officers from Biggar, Unity, and Kindersley/ Kerrobert responded and became involved in the pursuit. Following the brief pursuit, officers located the suspect vehicle approximately 1.5 kilometres west of Landis, near Highway 14.

The driver was quickly located in a nearby wooded area and was arrested by Biggar RCMP without incident.

As a result of this incident Travis Stehr has been charged with: • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Section 249(1)(a) Criminal Code; • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime (less than $5, 000), Section

A few tidbits to think about This is a week with very little to write about in terms of an editorial.

Either that or it is a severe case of writer’s block. It is the warm weather when no one feels like working and would rather be spending time outside.

So, I turned to the news outlets and, there is always one dominant person you can count on to make your day. Donald Trump. I was talking with a fellow colleague who owns a newspaper in Alberta and his view is: “he makes good entertainment.”

Now, it seems Canadians are smuggling shoes across the border. We scuff them up and make them look old and wear them across the border. If you have left the country for a minimum of seven days, Canadians are allowed to spend $800 without paying duties or taxes. Mr. Trump, that’s a lot of shoes to scuff up and wear across the border (unless you have bought a pair of Jimmy Choos and you probably aren’t going to scuff those up).

It may seem to Canadians that the U.S. is picking on us but the European Union has now decided to levy billions of dollars in tariffs against the Americans. And, China is not backing down and has announced more tariffs amounting to billions as well.

There is a common theme here and it’s obvious someone does not want to play well in the sandbox.

As for a few tidbits here at home: the Conservatives have won a byelection in Quebec, winning a seat that was previously held by the Liberals. Political analysts will scrutinize this to death and discuss the implications of the outcome for many days to come.

Premier Scott Moe is trying once again to revise the equalization payment system. He is not the first premier but maybe he will be the one to be successful. There is no doubt the system does favour Quebec but no federal government has made any move to listen or change it so it will be an uphill battle.

Buy Canadian economics carry a steep cost

While Canadians may embrace buying Canadian food products in retaliation for the trade dispute with the U.S., it won’t come cheap

by Sylvain Charlebois, Dean of the Faculty of Management and professor in the Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University, senior fellow with the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, and author of Food Safety, Risk Intelligence and Benchmarking, published by Wiley-Blackwell (2017) Canadians are encouraging one another to go “Trump-free” – that is, to shop for groceries without buying a single American product. Even restaurants are jumping on the bandwagon by serving “Trump-free” dishes.

These are interesting reactions in the face of Washington’s somewhat contradictory foreign trade policies.

In a nutshell, here’s what happened following the G7 summit: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plays nice with U.S. President Donald Trump, Trump tears Trudeau apart on social media, Trudeau plays nice again.

While Trudeau showed very Canadian diplomacy, poise and resilience, the Canadian public seems to be taking another approach.

The Buy Canadian campaign targeting food products is nothing new.

We’ve shown our solidarity in the grocery store before. Canadians tend to rally and support specific sectors when these sectors are faced with adversity.

In 2003, during the mad cow crisis in which the cattle industry took a $7-billioin hit, Canadians showed their love for Canadian beef, so much so that Canada became the first country in the world to see its domestic demand for beef go up after its first native mad cow case. But this support was short-lived compared to the crisis itself, which lasted more than two years.

Retail sales for beef in Canada remained high for about the first nine months and then decreased steadily.

Consumers have busy lives, fixed habits and, most important, specific budgets. Once the media had moved on to the next crisis, most people had already forgotten there had ever been a mad cow crisis.

Many Canadian farmers ended up losing their farms because of the mad cow mess. But the public tends to react to things that are front of mind and that affect them directly.

Trade disputes are notorious for their capacity to damage economies, affecting everyone involved.

We trade for a reason. Some nations can produce certain goods at a lower price than others. A nation’s competitive advantage can both develop its own economy and serve other economies in need of innovative products

Many American food products have at least one Canadian ingredient and vice versa.

Defining what’s a Canadian product can be tricky. In the produce section, for example, it’s easy to choose Canadian items over American ones, since fruits and vegetables are clearly labelled as to country of origin. It’s much less obvious with processed goods.

And finding a maple leaf on the package is only half the battle. Many ingredients in packaged foods come from elsewhere, since regulations only require Canadian manufactured food products to undergo the last stage of processing in Canada.

If we want to be assured of buying Canadian, we should go out to eat Canadian more often or buy fresh products in the grocery store. Kudos to those Canadians willing to do so.

However, if our trade war with the U.S. escalates, not only will we not have a choice in buying Canadian, it will also cost us a lot more to feed ourselves.

With food, however, innovation is not nearly as big an issue as food security.

Food systems operate with the premise of serving a budget-stretched consumer. Studies show that we’re bargain hunters, whether we realize it or not.

Food is temporary and, as such, can’t help consumers integrate into a certain social class, perceptually speaking.

Unlike durable products, consumers can’t show off their new jam, strawberries or freshly-purchased chicken. This is the nature of ‘cupboard economics.’

People can visit a beautiful home but never see what’s kept inside the cupboards.

At the restaurant, though, it’s different. Here, the Buy Canadian campaign is more fitting.

Patriotism ranks second to price.

But this is the ideal time of year to use patriotism to justify some of our retail purchases. As Canada Day approaches, more consumers will feel the urge to buy Canadian and why not? But here again, consumers are fickle and will opt for the product that offers the best quality for the lowest price. In other words, they’ll most often choose the lowest-priced item, regardless of country of origin.

Franfurters or hot dogs?

coined by college magazines. This was a time when “dog wagons� could be found everywhere on campus and the name was meant to be sarcastic.

As mentioned German immigrants are credited

with the invention of the hot dog. In Germany they were originally called frankfurters name after the Gernan city of Frankfurt.

These little sausages were sometimes called wieners which is a reference to Vienna, Austria. In German the name is “Wien�.

Hot dogs were standard fare at ball games.

Again, this practice is credited to a German immigrant, Chris Von de Ahe who was a bar owner in St. Louis and also owned the St. Louis Browns, a major league baseball team.

Today the lowly hot dog is often called the

quintessential summer food. Cheap. Tasty. Great for barbecuing. A staple for backyard gatherings.

Kids love them but, secretly, so do a lot of adults.

The choice of condiments, well, let’s just say, what you Peggy Hasein dress your dog with is limited by only your imagination. Hot dogs can be as gourmet or as simple as you make them. Mustard, ketchup, relish are standard, but some people put Cheez Whiz on theirs; others make Coney Island dogs with ground beef.

Asquith Council News for June Asquith Town Council held it’s June regular meeting on June 13.

Attending the meeting were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors Sue Sawicki, Dylan Claypool, Harold Edwards, Ted Goodnough, and Jordan Claypool. Also attending was Foreman Darren Kraft, Assistant Administrator Kathy Picketts, and C.A.O. Holly Cross.

A resolution was made to accept the May 9 regular meeting minutes as presented.

Council made a motion to accept the accounts paid in the amount of $29,461.02 and the accounts payable in the amount of $94,771.97 as presented.

Orders have been sent to those individuals whose properties that have been deemed nuisance properties and yet require further clean up.

There were two water leaks on Main Street that required extensive repair.

Two new water connection lines were also installed at the 300 block of Charles Street. Valves were fixed an Main, Eagle, Charles, and Hartley.

The new pole shed has been ordered and the gravel pad has been prepared for the construction.

A new advertisement for the Town of Asquith has gone into StarPhoenix.

Councillor Goodnough is working with Jaylin Homes and their realtor. Their realtor will be promoting new houses

A resolution was made for the Town of Asquith to join the R.M. of Vanscoy’s Crime Watch Program.

The Asquith Fire Department/First Responder Pig Roast Fund Raiser was a great success!

As for some trivia, the world’s longest hot dog was 60 metres long. The bun was 60.3 metres. It was prepared for the AllJapan Bread Association which was the centre of a media event which celebrated the Association’s 50th anniversary.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Adoption of a Bylaw to Amend the RM of Glenside No. 377 Zoning Bylaw Public Notice is hereby given that the Council of the Rural Municipality of Glenside No. 377 intends to consider the adoption of a bylaw to amend the Zoning Bylaw No. 6-2015 under the Planning and Development Act, 2007.

INTENT OF ZONING BYLAW AMENDMENT: The proposed amendments will further clarify policies to improve interpretation and implementation and also further align the Zoning Bylaw with the Statements of Provincial Interest (5PI). The amendments are summarized below: 1. Section 7.3 Site Regulations, Discretionary Uses is amended by adding immediately after Minimum setback for trees, shelterbelts and other, the following: Exemptions: The maximum site size may be a greater area depending on existing physical circumstances, i.e., limitations or demarcations, peculiar to a proposed non-farm residential site, such as a shelter belt, existing buildings, a highway or rail line or topographical restraints.

2. Section 7.3 Site Regulations is amended by adding the following sub-section: .3 The minimum and maximum site area may be amended depending on existing physical circumstances, i.e. natural (river, creek, coulee, etc.) or man-made (roadway, railway, etc.) barriers, or to include attributes which part of the developed yard site such as windbreaks, fences, sloughs, etc.

PUBLIC INSPECTION: Any person may inspect the proposed bylaw to amend the Zoning Bylaw during regular office hours at the RM of Glenside No. 377 municipal office. Copies are available at costs.

The old school trail #2 Some people would call this writer some kind of a “crack-pot” for using the same title for two different articles -- but it’s not my fault!

The old school trail had a kind of split personality that showed up a little differently at different times, and to explain them, a fellow has to use the same names or he would get lost!

We might even have been “crack-pots” but we felt called to explain them the way that we saw them on our younger years, as that old trail about! People are called part of nature too, eh!

Our first time over it

(when we were 6 years old!) was a wonderful experience. Every turn and every gully seemed to have something to tell us, and we listened for the years that followed.

About 100 yards past the Mile Road (as we called it) the old school trail (as we called it!) was a big valley. The Buffalo, coming from the grazing ground to the North while trekking toward the springs along the river, left trails converging around the west end of the valley, and their cluster of trails left a very rough crossing. We always called this place “The Dips” and it was

kind of a rough passage, even for our old buggy.

But one of the neighbour boys had won a brand new Model “A” Ford - of course he showed some of the girls and made the mistake of driving them down our old school trail when he hit “The Dip” at 40 mph.

He upset the whole works out on their way to a dance at the old school! End of a romantic drive, eh?

When Tracy and Y.T. were up there a few years ago, the whole area was ploughed up.

The next most memorable bit of that trail was

where Y.T. found the huge garter snake that he has written about many times before.

Although the old school trail had a lot of things about it that we didn’t notice much, Y.T. must tell about some of the things Bob Mason that we did notice - and boy, oh boy did we ever notice them sometimes!

One evening dad was called to a school board meeting in our old school. Young Y.T. wanted to go with him

but dad said “No! Study a bit!”

Dad went in the old school buggy and after a while (studies over) young Y.T. decided to follow him a bit. It was sunset when I headed east toward the school. I had just passed The Dip and was going into the valley when the sun set, when I had the strange feeling that I was being followed.

On looking back against the evening sky of the valley I saw the long lean form of a coyote about 50 yards behind me!

I panicked! Boy was I scared!

Although it was dark ahead, I turned and ran!

Suddenly a huge form loomed up just ahead of me - Dad coming home from a short school board meeting! Boy was I ever glad to see him!

I never felt so good and safe in my life!

It would be rude, if not crude. (There goes that rhyming urge again, eh?), if one didn’t mention one of the top attractions of the old school trail: “chokecherry hill”.

At noon hour of our summer classes, all of us including the teacher filled up with the purple berries and attended our books again with coloured mouths.

When Tracy and I went back there a few years ago, the hill had been bulldozed away and a road built there!

The many other attractions of the old school trail have stayed with us through the years though, and what a thrill it is to go back and find them still there in my memories!

Helping seniors protect their hard earned money Released on June 15, 201 The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) wants to protect seniors from financial exploitation and fraud.

“We know seniors are trusting, often have accumulated wealth, and tend not to report crimes, which makes them a target for fraudsters or exploitive relatives who want to take advantage of them,” FCAA Securities Division Director Dean Murrison said. We want seniors to know the warning signs of financial abuse so they can recognize when someone is targeting them, as well as preventative steps they can take to protect themselves and their finances.”

Too frequently people

provide personal information such as credit card numbers, banking information or PINs to people they do not know and end up losing money to fraudsters or unethical relatives.

Here are some tips for seniors so they can protect themselves from exploitation and fraud: • Be very cautious when

speaking to people on the phone if you do not know them.

• If someone emails, texts or calls asking for personal or banking information, do not provide the information.

• Never wire money to a stranger.

• Do not download email attachments from people you don’t know.

Last week at Biggar Health Centre we started with Monday morning exercises. In the afternoon we had visits about the good old days.

Tuesday morning was current events. In the afternoon we had Wheel of Fortune.

Wednesday was our Volunteer Breakfast (a chance to thank everyone who gives their time for us). Afterwards we played

Blast from the Past. We had ice cream floats in the afternoon.

Thursday morning was Bible Study. In the afternoon we had our biannual tea and bake sale. Seventy-nine people signed the guest book. Sheila Busch won the 50/50. Jean Parker won first place prize, Betty Dollansky second prize, and Kathy Ferguson was third.

Friday was another busy day. We had a clothing party come in to sell some new fashions. The kitch-

en prepared a meal for lunch “Fit for a king”. The residents had pork chops, marinated veggies, warm potato salad, stuff mushrooms, and gin and tonic cake. The residents each got a crown to wear for the meal.

Saturday was animal bingo and a movie.

Sunday morning was Father’s Day. They had a party to celebrate that.

by Calvin Daniels Recently I was on one of the more notable social media sites and there was a post that was drawing a lot of attention, most of it citing disgust. The post was about baking bread containing flour made from ground cockroaches.

Most people were quite reactive to the post showing little interest in even being willing to try

the bread based on curiosity.

In North America the idea of consuming insects as part of our regular diets is admittedly foreign. The reason is probably as simple as the fact we have not needed to munch insects because there is an abundance of what we see as better choices.

Governments renew investment in Saskatchewan’s agricultural biotechnology sector Released on June 18, 2018 Monday, Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart announced renewed funding for AgWest Bio through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Ag-West Bio will receive $1.7 million per year for the next five years, for a total of $8.5 million, to support the development of the agricultural biotechnology sector in Saskatchewan.

“Innovation is key to enhancing competitiveness and driving sustainable growth in the agriculture sector,” said MacAulay. “This funding will help bring new research to market and grow the economy, which will strengthen the middle class and create even more opportunities for the Saskatchewan agriculture industry.”

“This investment demonstrates how agriculture research is a priority for our government, and works toward our goal of making Saskatchewan a world leader in biosciences,” Stewart said. “Since its inception, Ag-West Bio has played a significant role in the province’s bioscience innovation cluster and this renewed funding will allow its important work to continue.”

Ag-West Bio will use the funding to provide a range of essential services for the agriculture commu-

nity, including advocacy and advice; financing and business attraction; and networking and educational events.

Ag-West Bio was launched by the Government of Saskatchewan in 1989 to develop the ag-biotech sector and to advocate for sciencebased decision making. Its mandate remains to help expand the province’s bioscience sector by working with innovators and investors to help bring research to market.

“It’s a fascinating time to be involved in agriculture,” Ag-West Bio President and CEO Dr. Wilf Keller said. “Growth is being driven by both bio- and digital technologies. Ag-food is an area with significant potential; this renewed funding gives Ag-West Bio the resources to move this sector to the next level.”

Ag-West Bio received $1.5 million per year in funding from the federal and provincial governments under the previous policy framework, Growing Forward 2. This funding is provided through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a fiveyear $388 million investment by the federal and provincial governments in strategic initiatives for Saskatchewan agriculture. The investment is also part of the province’s record investment in agricultural research in the 2018-19 provincial budget.

that a large number of insects are quite edible, from certain types of scorpions, and cockroaches through to flies, bees and mealworms.

Now you would certainly want to be knowledgeable regarding source and preparation of any bugs, although that is good advice for anything we eat, but the take away here is that insects could be a source of food moving forward.

We know two things are part of our current reality, our world population is growing, and the arable land base to grow food upon is shrinking.

If those two things continue, one day current farming will not be able to feed the world.

Enter bugs stage right.

Many insects have sur-

prisingly high nutritional value, the aforementioned cockroach flours being a good source of added protein. The flour made of cockroaches developed by two scientists from the Federal University of Rio Grande in Brazil contains 40 per cent more protein than normal wheat flour.

In terms of feeding the world that may become significant, especially since insects can often be raised on foodstuffs not directly in competition with humans, and they require less room and produce less waste than traditional livestock.

So it may not be that long before a legitimate farm option will be raising cockroaches, mealworms and crickets to help feed the world.

Government Advertising in Canadian Community Newspapers

The Government of Canada has a duty to inform all Canadians about its programs, services, policies and decisions. Communication is central to the Government of Canada’s work and contributes directly to the Canadian public’s trust in their government.

The government must tailor messages to specific audiences to reach Canadians regardless of where they reside and ensure that new communications approaches are balanced with traditional methods.

In 2015/16 the government’s total media spend was $30.2 million.1 Every week in Canada, over 1,000 community newspapers circulate almost 19 million copies in key metropolitan areas, rural and remote regions, and all areas in between.2 83% of Canadians are local community newspaper readers.3 72% of Canadians want to see advertising for government programs and services in newspapers.4 Canadians trust advertising content in newspapers more than any other media.5 Less than 2% of the government’s total media spend was in community newspapers.1 34% of the government’s total media spend was online.1 24% of Canadians don’t use social media.4 Less than one in five look at any advertising on social media.4 Display ad click through rates in Canada are 0.09%.6 Of the $5.5 billion spent on internet advertising in Canada in 2016, an estimated 72% went to Google and Facebook.7 If there is a genuine will to reach ALL Canadians then there must be an investment in meaningful communication with citizens through community newspapers.

First, I would like to send out a huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers who have been in our school and on field trips with us the past month. May and June are incredibly busy months packed with fun activities that we could never host without parent support, SCC, teachers and EAs, Asquith Fire Dept., community coaches and LAS staff.

A few exciting staffing announcements Ms. Kayla Van Caeseele will be sharing the Special Education Resource Teacher position with Ms. Jen Mason. Ms. Mason has also received a huge honour by earning the Early Years Facilitator position through the Division. Luckily, Ms. Mason is talented enough to be a SERT, Facilitator and Pre-K teacher, all while remaining at LAS. Ms. Bachmeier will

also be back from her maternity leave and Ms. DeCorby will be around our elementary end even more as her contract has been increased.

As excited as I am for next year, there are a few bits of this school community that I’m going to miss - Mrs. Plummer and the Grade 12 Graduating Class. Congratulations to Ben, Thomas, Azaria, Clint, Matthew, Cauy, Mirjam, Errin, Alivia, Jeremy, Sunny, and Samara.

I can’t wait to hear about the amazing things you’re doing away from LAS. My summer wish for you...

3 tips to help your kids get the most out of summer (NC) While the summer vacation provides children with more freedom and a much-needed break from formal education, experts say this time of year is critical for learning and development and can contribute to their health and self-esteem.

Here are three ways to ensure your child gets the most out of this break.

Leave time for unstructured play. Many parents rush to fill their children’s time with scheduled activities, but don’t forget to leave space for

unstructured play. A growing body of evidence suggests that play is central to the development of the mental, physical and social skills kids need to achieve their full potential in adulthood.

New Horizons Activities Some 30 members and friends attended the noon potluck birthday party on Monday, June 14.

Emily Liska won the half-n-half draw and took home $24 as a result.

Yvonne Slater provided a birthday cake for the occasion.

Following the meal, we were well entertained by Wilfred and Joan Rice from the Cando area.

They played and sang a number of well known, favourite country and western and gospel songs.

Many thanks to them for sharing their talent with us.

The annual meeting took place the afternoon of June 13 with a small crowd in attendance.

President, Don, chaired the meeting and Chasity Braitenbach was recording secretary. Financial, building, courtesy car, coordinator, and activity reports were received.

Don Swyryda, Jim Tapp, Bill Fisher and Betty Mundt were elected to a two year term.

Geoff Cooke, who has served us well since 1993, has decided to step down from his position. We will miss his wise counsel and good judgment. Thankfully he has expressed his intention to continue to serve our organization as he is able.

There were only a few bingo players out the afternoon of June 14.

Moe Goring won the halfn-half game while Pat Turner took home the blackout prize. The next bingo will be on June 28.

Saskatchewan Highway Patrol ready to hit the road in July Released on June 14, 2018 Commercial vehicle enforcement officers in Saskatchewan have a new mandate and a new name.

The Saskatchewan Highway Patrol is replacing the former Commercial Vehicle Enforcement group.

The name change reflects the newly expanded role for the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure’s enforcement team. The new name and mandate will come into effect on July 1, 2018.

“Last year, it was announced that the Protection and Response

Team (PRT) would be created to help reduce crime in rural Saskatchewan,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said. “Officers from Commercial Vehicle Enforcement were identified as members of the team that would provide support to the RCMP and municipal police forces and they will soon be ready to do that.”

Although protecting the provincial highway system through commercial vehicle enforcement will remain the primary function for Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officers, they’re receiving expanded responsibilities

to support their role on the PRT. These responsibilities include: • Responding to 911 calls; • Investigating impaired drivers; • Enforcing speed limits and other traffic violations – inside and outside of work zones; • Taking action when someone is found committing an offence; • Responding to motor vehicle accidents; and • Investigating vehicles hauling livestock to ensure the health and welfare of the animals.

“We are pleased to see the additional new officers

capable of responding to incidents in rural areas,” SARM President Ray Orb said. “Our membership has repeatedly noted that a timely response to emergency situations and addressing rural crime is a high priority.”

Members of the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol have received extensive training in recent months to prepare them for their new responsibilities.

They’ve received training in the enhanced use of force, firearms and tactics for 911 calls, such as clearing a house of suspects and high-risk vehicle stops. Officers have

also received training in dealing with people with mental health issues, as well as training in the

Criminal Code and the requirements for the collection and control of evidence.

muscle cramps. Heat illnesses can affect you quickly and are mainly caused by overexposure to heat or overexertion in the heat. Stay informed about local weather forecasts and alerts so you know when to take extra care.

Know your risks. You’re at a greater risk for heat illness if you have certain health issues, including breathing difficulties, heart problems, a mental

illness such as depression or dementia, or take certain medications. If you are taking medication or have a health condition, ask your doctor or pharmacist if it increases your risk in the heat and follow their recommendations.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool liquids, especially water, before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration.

Remind yourself to drink water by leaving a glass by the sink and eat more fruits and vegetables as they have high water content.

Keep your cool. Wear loose-fitting, lightcoloured clothing made from breathable fabric. At home, prepare meals that don’t need to be cooked in the oven and block the

sun by closing awnings, curtains or blinds during the day.

Pay close attention to how you feel. Watch for symptoms of heat illness, which include dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting and headache.

If you or anyone around you experiences any of these symptoms during hot weather, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Water is best.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you are caring for someone who has a high body temperature and is either unconscious or confused or who has stopped sweating.

Manufacturing shipments rise in April Released on June 15, 2018 Saskatchewan’s manufacturing shipments were up 16.2 per cent (seasonally adjusted) to $1.53 billion in April 2018 when compared to April 2017. This represents the second highest percentage increase among the provinces. Nationally, sales were up 3.6 per cent over the same period.

“This significant increase in the year-over-year

comparison shows the resiliency and diversity of our economy,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Manufacturing is one of the key components of Saskatchewan’s economy, creating jobs and investment across the province.”

On a month-over-month basis, shipments were up 6.7 per cent between March 2018 and April 2018, the highest percent-

age increase among the provinces. On a national basis, manufacturing shipments dropped 1.3 per cent.

Year-over-year increases (seasonally unadjusted) were reported for food manufacturing (up 23.5 per cent); wood products (up 20.8 per cent); fabricated metal manufacturing (up 16.3 per cent) and; machinery manufacturing (up 10.1 per cent).

It was 100 years almost to the day from when Tom and Anne Elizabeth (Lillie) Moore moved onto the farm at Kelfield, that Joseph Moore, their only son and the last of that family, died on April 9, 2018 at age 94. Evangaline (Eva) Moore died peacefully at the Regional District Home in Battleford January 25, 2018 at age 91.

“Uncle Tom” and “Aunt Lillie” enjoyed farm life and raised their three kids, Winnie, Joe and Eva, at Kelfield amongst wonderful neighbors and friends.

Joe continued farming until moving to Nova Scotia in 1974 with his wife Margaret and three children.

Joseph was predeceased by his wife, Margaret in 1999; sister, Winnifred 1986; and sister, Eva in January 2018.

He is missed by many, especially his children, Nelia (Roland) Brooks, Cheryl (Walter) Noe and David; his six grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Evangeline loved life and although

never married, loved her nieces, nephew and her many friends. She also enjoyed the company of the hundreds of birds, cats, dogs, and wild animals that lived on the Moore farm of virgin prairie, coulees and spring water. Eva worked at the Provincial Court in Saskatoon for many years and spent weekends at the farm which was her favorite place in the world. She suffered a stroke in March 2014 and was unable to return.

She was a quiet woman with a busy intellectual mind. Her love of literature, music and politics were hidden because of her reserved nature, but she was well versed on all these subjects. She delighted in her Irish ancestry. Many who knew her would say she was the most gentle, sweetnatured woman this world ever knew.

Come out to KELFIELD JULY 11 to meet Patty, Nelia and Cheryl, and share some stories, pictures and history.

Try this flavourful pork dish for your next barbecue (NC) Looking for that perfect cut of meat to serve at your next outdoor party? This delicious recipe features a pork loin roast made with classic maple and apple

flavours.

Maple and miso are a real power couple when it comes to the marriage of sweet and savoury flavours, shares Tom Filippou, executive Cheff of Presidents Choice cooking school. Be sure to use white miso paste or shiromiso, as it delivers a mild hit of umami that complements rather than overwhelms the maple.

Maple Apple Pork with Miso Slaw Prep time: 35 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Makes: 6 Ingredients: 1 pork loin fillet roast (about 2lb/900g); 1 clove garlic,finely grated or pressed; 2 tbsp (25mL)

white miso paste; 2 tbsp (25mL) cider vinegar; 1 tbsp (15mL) pure maple syrup; 1/2 tsp (2mL) Dijon mustard; 1/4 tsp (1mL) black pepper; 1/4cup (50mL) canola oil; 5 green onions, thinly sliced; 3 carrots, grated; 2 stalks celery, thinly sliced; 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and cut into match sticks; 1 Gala apple, cored and cut into match sticks; 2 cups (500mL) shredded red cabbage; 2 cups (500mL) shredded Napa cabbage; Chopped fresh chives(optional).

Directions: Preheat one barbecue burner to medium heat and leave other burner off. Brush grill with oil.

Grill pork 8 minutes, turning once. Transfer pork to cool side. Grill,

lid down, and adjust hot burner if necessary to maintain temperature of 375 F (190C) for 30 to 40 minutes or until cooked through. Transfer to cutting board;cover loosely with foil. Let stand 10 minutes. Cut into 1/4inch (5mm) thick slices.

Meanwhile, whisk together garlic,miso paste,vinegar,maple syrup, mustard and pepper in large bowl. Gradually whisk in oil. Add green onions, carrots, celery, apples and cabbage; toss to coat.

Serve pork with cabbage mixture. Sprinkle with chives(if using).

Chefs tip: No barbecue? Roast the pork on a greased foil-lined baking sheet in 375F (190C) oven until cooked through, 50 to 60minutes.

Saskatchewan’s Minimum Wage once again set to increase in October Released on June 15, 2018 The minimum wage in Saskatchewan will increase to $11.06 an hour from $10.96 an hour on October 1, 2018.

The increase is the 10th

since this government took office. An indexation formula has been used to calculate increases in the minimum wage since 2011.

The province also continues to have a low per-

sonal income tax rate, ensuring low income earners, including minimum wage earners, keep more of their money.

Saskatchewan’s legislation provides for an annual review based on

changes to the Consumer Price Index and the average hourly wage for the previous year. Any changes to the minimum wage are to be announced

Leslie’s Drugstore celebrates 70 years in Biggar

July 1 will mark 70 years since Leslie’s Drugstore became a fixture on Main Street in Biggar. Ivan, Ione and Doreen Leslie bought the Ford Drug Store and opened for business on July 1, 1948, no stat holidays in those days!

The staff consisted of two pharmacists, Ivan and Doreen, and five full-time front shop staff, including a young medical student, Laurie Dunbar.

The Leslie Block was home to the office of Dr. Alan Hooge, Dr. Selby and later Dr. Laurie Dunbar.

There was also a dental office for the practice of Dr. Woolsley. These offices were upstairs, along with two residential apartments; one being the first home of the Leslie family in Biggar. The basement of the Block contained the School Division office, and a tailor, Mr. Brown.

In the 1960s Marion Kupcyck opened the Hi-Style Hair Salon in the basement. The back shop was added around 1957, and the soda

fountain was removed circa 1965. There have been several interior renovations over the years, the most recent being in 2011. The exterior has seen many facelifts over the decades, with the latest in 2016.

Long-serving staff members include pharmacist Maurine Lehne who worked at Leslie’s for 45 years and Margaret Wheaton was employed as a pharmacist in Leslie’s for over 30 years. Familiar faces in the front for 20 years were Linda Silvernagle and Dianne Akister, with many others over the 70 years including Marj Nimmo, Doris Hoppe and Vivian Price.

Doreen (nee Leslie) married Don Wylie in 1953, and continued to work as she raised her family. Doreen is still actively working in the business, 70 years, a remarkable work life by any standard.

Doreen is grateful for the support of present staff, Pharmacists, Tina Zagoruy, Ashlyn Mergel, Baylee Tendler; as well as front shop staff, Jean Schommer, Christina Borbe; and part-time staff, Kate Ilyasov and Patty Schommer.

Doreen Wylie thanks Biggar and the surrounding communities for their patronage

over the past seven decades of business.
