As you read this, my last entry for 2011, the season of Christmas continues,

New Years celebrations are over and 2012 begins!

I carry on with apologies . . . for obvious reasons.

St. Gabriel School takes full responsibility for the brown December - and as of writing this, the expected brown Christmas. Our concert musical for 2011 was “A Pirate Christmas”.

Certainly it was not our intentions to cause this

and an assumption was made that Pirates on the Saskatchewan went south in October - or at least to Alberta (“Last Saskatchewan Pirate” by the Arrogant Worms reference).

Despite the visual confusion outside, inside St. Gabriel School has had a complete immersion in Advent and preparation for the Christmas Season. Much of the daily activity was all about the Advent Season.

Curriculum and student learning took on a “project” feel as concert planning took centre stage.

Creating and gathering props, costumes, lighting, sound effects and mu-

sic took up many hours.

The actors and singers also spent much time rehearsing and learning their lines and songs for the concert. I will return to this topic after a brief intermission . . .

Both basketball and curling continued this month. Our basketball teams played BCS2000 on the 6th. BCS2000 were gracious hosts and have strong teams this season - especially the boys, as they handily won both games. With the coaching of Miss Moldenhauer, our inexperienced teams will continue to improve in the New Year as their season progresses.

their practices on the 14th. They will start up again in January on their regular Mondays and Wednesdays.

Representatives from the Gideon Bible Society visited Mrs. Donahue and her Grade 5 class on Monday, December 12 presenting each of them their own pocket bible.

Some of the Grade 6’s could have used a bible the next day - the public health nurse, Mrs. Meschishnick, visited the school to immunize many of them as well as catching up other students from different grades. It’s a little unnerving to see this health care worker enjoying the needle process so much!

The December CSCC Home and School Subway Lunch was held on Friday, Dec. 16. It was also Pajama Day! The week before that, St. Gabriel Catholic School Community Council held their Parent Night on Tuesday, Dec. 6. It was an informative evening. Debbie Waring, one of Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Occupational Therapists, and Leanne McGettigan, Vice Principal at St. Volodymyr were our presenters. They shared with us background information

and specific strategies, resources, and tech aids with a focus on the “Zone In” program all of which will support one of St. Gabriel School’s LIP priorities. This LIP goal was designed specifically to support students becoming more effective at staying on task, transitioning from activities or classes as well as self-regulating (ways for children to monitor the signals that indicate an internal level of readiness to work, play, listen, attend, and participate in activities). As a school we look forward to further implementation of this goal.

And back to the season ...

Our singers and musicians spent much time out in the community. All of our groups participated in the Carol Festival, and then Mrs. Jiricka took many of them “on tour” entertaining others. The Grade 1 class, Grade 8/9 Tone Chimes and the Glee Club Trio shared their talents at the New Horizons on Monday, Dec. 12th. On the 14th the Kindergarten, Grade 1 class, and again the Tone Chime musicians, performed for many of the residents at the Diamond Lodge. To finish the tour off, the Glee Club were guest performers at the Musettes Concert on the evening of the 20th.

“A Pirate Christmas” dress rehearsal took place on the morning of the 20th. As every year there were many glitches in the performance. Practices continued that afternoon, and the glitches seemed to disappear. On that Wednesday we held two performances to enthusiastic and appreciative audiences. New West Partnership Premiers commit to Ottawa Mission Canada’s three westernmost premiers agreed on developing a joint mission to Ottawa in 2012 to engage the federal government on several key issues including a Canadian E n e r g y S t r a t e g y, immigration, labour market development and greenhouse gas regulations.

Premiers recognize that the New West Partnership plays a critical role in the growth of the Canadian economy. They agreed to intensify the role of the partnership in promoting the political interests of the New West within Confederation.

As Western partners, the premiers are focused on the importance of a Canadian Energy Strategy for the West and all of Canada.

“The three Western provinces need to play a global leadership role in meeting the world’s energy demands,” said Alison Redford, Premier of Alberta. “Western Canada

is in a position where we can increase production to meet growing demand in an environmentally responsible manner.”

During their meeting on December 13 in Edmonton, premiers also focused on labour market development in the West.

They agreed to further explore a number of avenues to address labour market needs, including immigration, training and aboriginal employment.

“As Western provinces are facing an increasing labour shortage in the coming years, it’s vital we work together with the federal government to ensure our labour market strategies match the needs of our growing provinces,” said Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall.

In this work, premiers intend to continue to build on the strong foundation of the New West Partnership Trade Agreement, which provides for ease of movement for domestic and international workers and which has established

NDP calls for clear position on health care The NDP are calling on the Sask Party government to be transparent on its health care plan, including the message on health funding being delivered to the federal government.

Federal Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said December 17 that the renewal of the Health Accord with the provinces beyond 2016 would be fiscally unsustainable.

The federal and provincial finance ministers are meeting in Victoria December 19 and the Health Accord is on the agenda.

“Saskatchewan people want our universal health care system strengthened and improved,” said Broten. “And people are worried that the absence of political will to push for a long-term deal puts this in jeopardy.”

Premier Brad Wall told reporters at the Saskatchewan legislature on Thursday that he wants a commitment beyond two years - but told the Globe and Mail last week that it is “not there yet,” in terms of demanding another long-term deal with Ottawa. Wall also said on December 15 that he’s open to “innovation” w i t h i n t h e s i x - p e rcent escalator clause currently built into the Health Accord.

“A long-term vision for health care is sorely lacking from the Sask Party government,” said

Broten. “We don’t see any movement to maximize capacity in the public system, we don’t know what the long-term role of for-profit health care will be, and we don’t know the government’s plans to mitigate the resource drain from the public system and the inevitable conflicts-of-interest that arise with increased forprofit delivery.”

Broten noted that neither the recent throne speech nor the government’s agenda for the just-concluded sitting of the Legislative Assembly gave a clear picture of the Sask Party’s plan for health care.

“If the Sask Party has a long-term plan for health care - including a funding model - they should tell us what it is,” said Broten.

“If they don’t have a plan, I think we need to know that, too.”

January. A new beginning. A fresh start.

The phrase “slow as molasses in January” is appropriate for this month as it is often cold, very cold. Thus, molasses will run slower in cooler temps but is also refers to a person who dawdles or moves slow.

Yes, January. It is also called “hump” month because after we get through the long, dark days, winter seems a little easier to handle with the knowledge that we are reaching the end of it.

Interestingly January was established as the first month of the year in the Julian calendar. It was named after Janus, a god and is a Latin word for door. Probably because you are opening a door into a new year.

There a door custom called “first footing” which was practiced years ago and was supposed to bring good luck to people for the coming year. As soon as midnight has passed, people would wait behind their doors for a dark haired person to arrive. The visitor carried a piece of coal, some

bread, some money and some greenery -- all for good luck. Coal to make sure the house would always be warm; bread to make sure there would be enough for everyone to eat; greenery to make sure they had a long life and of course, enough money.

Another interesting point about the Roman calendar is that there were no months of January or February at all. There were only 10 months and the new year started March 1.

If only that meant we would miss two months of winter but I suspect that would not be the case.

The first month was called Wolf monath (wolf month) by the Anglo-Saxons because wolves would come into the villages in search of food. January starts the same day as October (in a common year) and starts on the same day of the week as April and July in leap years. Also in common years, January ends on the same day of the week as February and October, and in a leap ends on the same

day of the week as July.

Now, I’m not sure what you are going to do with this information but it is an interesting tidbit.

And on 25 January of each year and for many days before it and after it there is not an hour in the day or night when a Burns Supper is not taking place somewhere on this earth.

Len G. Murray There are some prominent dates in January the one of the most notable is Robbie Burns Night, brought to us by the Scots to honour their greatest poet. Usually a traditional Scottish meal is prepared (neaps or swede, tatties or potato, and haggis) and washed down with whiskey.

Many do celebrate the day by reciting some of his poems and having a social event.

St. Hilary’s Feast Day is celebrated on January 13 and this day has gained the reputation of also being the coldest day of the year. According to the history books, in 1205 the Thames in London froze over on this day.

Sentiment

by Bob Mason Sentiment seems nearly to have gone out of style and it almost tears my heart to think about things like this!

In a way, Yours Truly (YT) doesn’t even believe it!

The “style” part of the above statement is mebbe to blame for the whole thing, I dunno, but “sentiment” bit will always be with us - I hope!

All though our history there have been some terrible styles. Styles (like riots) just come and go, and have always come and gone.

But sometimes they leave a lot of people almost hating each other!

Long ago, the thing to do was to beat a slave who refused to do what you asked, and farther down history, on August 24, 1572 (St. Bartholemews Day), it was stylish to kill all the Huguenots you could even if they were fellow residents of a fellow country!

Just in our own time, it has been stylish to hate, (or even kill!) the “Boche”, and even later, commendably

stylish to hate (even kill!) the Nazis, Nips, et cetera.

You name them! And all the while, deep down in his thinking, this man who “hated” and “killed”, wanted to get along with those other guys!

Who is setting the style for who? Mebbe I’m wrong, and if I am, society has gone down the wrong economic road for centuries!

Yours Truly never felt so good as when ‘enemies” exercised a little compassion (sentiment), and we all went out to pick up the wounded on that cold night of January 29, 1945.

YT himself never smoked, but every parcel he received overseas had a carton of cigarettes in it, and we often traded these to P.O.W.’s

Withoutadoubt,hundreds of things like this happened in those few months. When our “Leaders” told us to go out and kill each other!

George Blackburn, in his book “Guns of Normandy” (Page 392) tells the story of Captain Bill Waddel whom the German army captured in France: “ . . . eventually the German doctor comes around and asked if I wanted to go back to Canada, and of course I said “yes’. So they gave me a white flag and lead me out to where I was wounded - it was wonderful to go back and see England again!”

Yet even the most important moments of the year seemed to lack a lot of genuine sentiment.

On Christmas Eve 1945, Richardson and YT (from our outpost) could hear a few guttural carols being sung way out there in the dark. Mebbe they were records, I dunno. The mortar-people must have heard them too, for those carols sure quieted down when a few bombs landed near them! How uncivilized can you get!

Without a doubt (again!) manythingshavehappened every day to prove how much we really care about each other. A fine, if not that dignified, example of this “caring” bit is Coffee Row, which has been in existence since long, long before “Tales of a Wayside Inn” was written - and yet we still resign ourselves to letting “gain” give us it’s example of how we should live!

Just the other day when YT was going to give out with some of his ‘wisdom”, the young fellow I was talking to hauled out his small phone to call his girlfriend!

So much for my company, eh?

Surely all this kind of stuff will pass (we hope!) as society gets down to its “one on one” way of life again!

Older people have always bewailed progress though, and I suppose that is YT’s problem right now. Often I wonder if we ever intend to slowdown again so that we can smell the roses!

In the past, all man’s intentions to make it a better world seem to have failed miserably. Hundreds of wars have been fought in defense of or in order to “improve” things. And yet . ..

I suppose that the portrayed sentiments of television influence a lot of modern thinking, Again, I dunno. I do know the radio of YT’s day sure did!

Whereas there seems to be a lot of violence on TV. Mostly comedians - and along with a whole list of them was a fellow called “Fibber McGee” - and Molly!

Fibber (answering the phone): “oh hello Mert.

How’s every little thing?

What? Fell down stairs and broke hands and face!”

Molly (excitedly): “Oh dear, whatever happened?”

Fibber (aside): “Mert’s little sister fell downstairs carrying their new clock and smashed it!”

No swear words, and no violence, only laughs!

And then there are “workaholics”.

These people (and I’m afraid far too many of us are getting that way) don’t seem to have much time for sentiment, and spend much of their lives working toward something that they never reach.

We’ve all met them, (mebbe some of us are them).

“I gotta go, go, go!” Leaving us with the idea that work, work, work is the thing.

The ambition for “wealth” seems to be the goal of life,

and any moves society makes to “get along” with people seem solely for economics sake!

But who is YT to tell about or even suggest our failing? Like an umpire (who is sometimes wrong!), Yours Truly can only call the plays of life as he sees them!

We all know (or should know!) that the things that really count in life, are the things that will survive, and sentiment is one of those things! (Eating and breathing are a couple of the other!)

Although for years some types have taken advantages of sentiment (and will continue), they haven’t killed it. Mebbe they should have, but they haven’t. It almost seems gone, yet we all know it still out there?

We don’t use it enough mebbe, but when the chips are down, and we really need it. It’s still around, okay?

There is hope for an ideal society yet, I think, and if and when we ever get it, we’ll find that sentiment means an awful lot!

Fortnightly met at Bonnie Augustin’s beautifully decorated home on December 14 for their Christmas party.

Ina Allen arrived with a lovely gift for each of her ‘friends’, a special oriental wall plate. The ladies were delighted. Bonnie also gave each a lovely Christmas ornament.

Loreen Grondin conducted the meeting. Tillie Zimmer as secretary gave the minutes and financial statement. The charity gift was discussed.

In answer to roll call, each member presented an article of interest. Some were special Christmas stories but most were humourous stories. Everyone had a th 6 Ave.good E. laugh!

with a great variety of treats.

Sunday Terry and Pat from Associated Gospel Choir sang for us and we had our church service presented by the Seventh Day Adventist.

That was our weekly happenings, as you can see it was a busy one. We are looking forward to another Christmas party Friday, December 23.

We always enjoy visiting with our family and friends that stop in, and also the volunteers that come in to help us.

We all hope you have a great week ahead!

Biggar Central School students crowd around Santa for a picture, hoping to get in a few last words and requests with the Jolly One before the big day. The Student Representative Council pulled a few favours, and had Santa interrupt his busy schedule to come to the school.

Each week, 10 residents are invited to Breakfast Club. Everyone has the opportunity to come in for this club. In the afternoon Landis CWL put on a game of Christmas Bingo and brought ice cream for a treat.

On Saturday and Sunday we had our big Christmas dinners for the residents and their families. A delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served on both days. Louise Souilet Hawkins played the piano on Saturday. On

Hello from the Residents and Staff at Diamond Lodge. According to our Countdown to Christmas board, there are only six days left before Christmas.

We have been kept busy for another week, starting with exercises and ball toss on Monday morning. In the afternoon we played a game of Jeopardy.

Tuesday morning we listened to current events.

In the afternoon we enjoyed a game of Wheel of Fortune.

Wednesday morning we had St. Gabriel School come to sing and play the chime bells for us.

They did an excellent job, everyone enjoyed themselves listening and singing along to the Christmas music. In the afternoon we played a game of shuffleboard.

Thursday morning we were exercising again.

After supper a few of the residents enjoyed the Christmas lights on the lights tour.

Early Friday morning the smell of bacon wafted through the halls, as the Activity Staff fried up some bacon and eggs.

This is the time of year when we like to thank all of our customers for their business over the past year. We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy New Year.

by Calvin Daniels There are times an agricultural issue becomes bigger than simply how it may impact farmers.

That is the situation surrounding the Stephen H a r p e r government’s handling of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB).

Whether a proponent of the single-desk seller of Prairie wheat, durum and export barley, or whether you fought for a change to the system, you should be outraged and frankly scared by the Conservative government process.

A government has the right to change legislation, and the Conservative had set their sights on giving Prairie farmers marketing options, and that required changing the CWB. In their first term as a minority government the Conservatives avoided

undertaking the changes knowing full well it would face a heated opposition in Parliament.

With its current majority the CWB moved up the hit list.

But, there are rules and laws involved with how government must make legislative changes, and as it stands right now the Conservatives appear to have broken those laws, and that is something which should worry farmers on both sides of the CWB, and everyone else outside of the farm sector.

It is a disturbing situation when a government, within a democracy, and holding a majority they would ultimately use to make changes they wanted, chooses to run roughshod over the system, and seeming to run counter to our laws in the process.

At least that appears the view of one Federal Court

Judge.

Recently the Federal Court of Canada judge ruled in favour of CWB directors and, Friends of the CWB (an advocacy group for the CWB).

Judge Douglas Campbell ruled December 6 that agriculture minister Gerry Ritz broke the rule of law by introducing legislation to end the CWB because the government had not first consulted with the board’s directors, nor had the government held a producer plebiscite.Both the consultation and plebiscite process were steps laid out as requirements with the CWB Act. The court decision didn’t stop the Conservatives, who vow to appeal of course, and rather than waiting on the appeal process pushed through passage of Bill C-18, which has received royal assent, which would normally make it binding.

The Canadian Wheat Board’s former farmerelected board members are back in court asking for an injunction stopping

implementation of Bill C-18 (Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act).

The legality of the process will end up before the Supreme Court and could quite easily put the federal government on the opposite of a ruling by the highest court in the land, and throwing marketing of Prairie grain into complete turmoil.

And thanks to the Conservative government’s arrogance that such a sweeping change can be made quickly, the timeline to straighten the mess out is now only seven months, before the new 2012-13 crop year begins.

Farmers are even facing challenges in planning their plantings next spring, not sure who will be able to market wheat, durum and export barley if grown.

It is a mess that a wise government would have avoided, and a situation that makes one worry if Harper and his party have the respect a democracy deserves from its elected representatives.

It’s time for holiday fun and gathering the family together to share a warm, wonderful festivity. We hope the holidas bring everything you want!

Life Goes On

by Alice Ellis Life Goes On enjoyed a happy Christmas party at the United Church on December 14.

A lovely chicken dinner started at 11:30. The candle had been lit, the table decorated, and the group recited the Lord’s Prayer. Thanks to all the ladies who brought the food.

A short meeting followed with minutes and financial statement. The next meeting will be on Jan. 11 in the New Year. New members were suggested.

Gladys conducted two very lively games, enjoyed by all.

Lydia won the club draw.

Gift exchange followed with surprises for all. A happy social hour sent everyone home filled with the Christmas spirit.

School Community Council our school will be hosting Persephone Theatre on March 12, as part of the SaskTel Youth Tour.

Tree Boy, will be performing in the morning and is suitable for children from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8. Hope you all had a tragedy free and fun holiday.

Now, we wait for the days to get longer and more hours of sunshine.

Eventually we will get outside and start grubbing around in the dirt amongst our plants.

In the meantime, there are our houseplants.

Because we don’t get the amount of bright light 12 months a year, our houseplants should be ones that have low light demands. I have grown each one of these plants, some have flourished, others have just got boring and I have given them away. Many my cats ate, or I overwatered and they died. Hopefully you could be a better steward than me with these easy to grow, low light houseplants.

Why not begin the New Year off with trying a lucky bamboo?

Apparently these need little light, and they grow in water! And, according to the principles of Feng Shui, the lucky bamboo are said to bring good luck and fortune, especially if given as a gift. I read one report where someone actually grew their lucky bamboo in the dark! My cat, unbeknownst to me, knocked over the vase, the water spilled out, and it died before I thought to check on it!

Another great low light, easy care plant is the spider plant. Now these are great! They get little babies at the end of each hanging branch. These babies can then be rooted to make plants again. In a few years, I had spider plants all over the house,

and everyone I knew had one of the babies!

Hang them and their lovely drooping leaves and babies are beautiful, but hang them in a spot that is easy to reach to water! If you don’t hang them, but set them on the corner of the table to drape over, kitty cannot help herself. Each one of the babies need to be batted, chewed and played with until the whole plant topples over onto the floor, and, alas, another plant for the compost.

I have a golden pothos vine now in a lovely antique decorative pot. It seems to be able to take all kinds of abuse . . . overwatering, underwatering, potbound, low light and even the cats leave it alone! It hasn’t got much gold left on the leaves, but it is still a lovely green vine draping over the top of bookcase.

The Mother-in-laws tongue or snake plant prefers full sun, and yet will grow in low light.

The legend is, never repot your plant until the pot cracks and breaks!

Native to Africa, over watering is the enemy of these plants. They look wonderful in a group of plants, a little forlorn all by themselves.

These mini Christmas Cowboys and Cowgirls, were

of plants there are several that as tough as nails and can live through all kinds of neglect and abuse! There are several plants in this family. Some have nice coloured, striped leaves, whereas some have broad, arching leaves. I think we have all had a dracaena tree stuck in a corner at one time in our lives.

My favourite low light easy care houseplants are the bromeliads. To water them, the wee cup formed by the leaves in the center has to be kept filled with water.

That’s it! They like to be a bit potbound. One day a gorgeous, usually pink, spiky flower will

blossom! The cats will drink out of the cup, but leave everything else alone, these plants will last for a long time!

Easy to grow houseplants still need some attention. A gentle word, an occasional bath to remove dust, and regular fertilizer will go a long way to keeping your indoor garden green . . . a little reminder that there is hope for spring!

This article will discuss the Prize scam.

One of the most common scams is the “Prize Pitch”.

There are several different types of the prize scam that a person can encounter. Victims of these types of fraud

are targeted regardless of age, race, religion, education and economic background.

Consumers need to be careful when entering any type of contest or receiving any prize. In the Prize Pitch, consumers are told they have been specially chosen to win a prize, or have been specially chosen to win a prize, or have been awarded one of three of five prizes. “Prizes” usually include items such as cash or vehicles. However, consumers are told that you must purchase a product and

pay in advance to receive your prize.

These products are usually cheap or overpriced, but are made to sound valuable over the phone.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre wants to remind consumers that, “In a legitimate contest you do not have to purchase a product to qualify for a prize.”

Some may also encounter the “Sweepstakes Scam”. In this scam, consumers end up entering a fake sweepstakes contest in the mail, which is followed up with a fraudulent call by a telemarketer.

This person usually will identity themselves as a

lawyer, customs agent or another official. They will represent themselves as an agent for a particular company. In this scam, this person will tell you that you have won a large cash award, but money must be sent first to cover taxes, et cetera.

The RCMP have received many complaints regarding these types of scams. I am reminding everyone to review the Canadian AntiFraud Centre Web site if they feel they encountered a possible fraud.

Landis Locals Helen Buxton 658-2115 Our lady of Fatima and Friends Parish Choir presented an afternoon of music to a full house last Sunday.

They sang many old familiar carols, as well as some new to us, all under the capable leadership of Louise Souillet-Hawkins. The audience was also treated to a vocal solo from Koralie Huber, a violin solo from Austin Garrett, a guitar and keyboard duet from Jesse Miller and Cody Garrett, piano duets form Melanie and Regan Sittler, and Pay-

ton and Justin Sittler, and a bagpipe solo from Jay Sittler.

It is wonderful to have so many talented young people in our community.This Landis choir is getting a reputation for providing beautiful music, and attracts visitors from all the surrounding communities. The CWL provided a delicious array of goodies and coffee after the program.

Friends of Don Martin were saddened by his passing last week, following a

lengthy illness. Our sympathy goes to his wife, Barb, brother Bruce, and all their families.

On December 12, Lois and Ken Leinenweber hosted a turkey supper for her siblings and spouses. This was to celebrate Doug Buxton’s 55th birthday, the end of his first series of cancer treatments, and a Christmas gift

exchange. Doug and Wanda live in Lloydminster, and will be spending Christmas with their family there.

Lavern Skog recently spent the day in Perdue with her sister, Jo and Al Levitt.

Jim Buxton and Joyce Manns spent a few days with her son Dan Manns and family in Kipling. There

are still many signs of the flooding in that area last spring, with many fields still underwater.

How to keep New Year’s resolutions Most people have made New Year’s resolutions at some point in their lives -- with varying degrees of success. The secret to making -- and keeping -a New Year’s resolution is to start thinking about it before New Year’s Eve. Be Realistic The surest way to fall

short of your goal is for it to be unrealistic. Resolving to never eat your favorite food again is a set-up for failure. Set a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding that food more often than you do now. If your resolution is something like losing weight, do some research

to see what a realistic, attainable goal would be.

Choose Wisely Don’t decide on a resolution at the last minute on New Year’s Eve. It may help to make a list of possible resolutions and develop this list over time. Keep it with you and ask others to contribute ideas. You should know what your goal is well before December 31st arrives.

Create a Plan To be successful, it helps to have clear steps to put into action. Write your resolution and plan down in a notebook or journal. Decide how you will deal with the temp-

tation to backslide. This could include calling a friend for support, taking a walk around the block or simply thinking positively. Start your plan during the first few days of January to harness your motivation.

Don’t expect overnight miracles. Resolutions are accomplished with a hundred tiny steps that happen throughout the year. You should think of a New Year’s resolution as nothing more than a starting point and that developing positive habits will keep your plan moving forward.

Talk About It Tell friends and fam-

ily members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better. The bestcase scenario is to find a friend or family member who has also made a New Year’s resolution and agree to motivate each other.

Remain Flexible Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal.

Richard Edward (Rico) Boudy March 13, 1957 December 15, 2011 Rico Boudy, formerly of Ruthilda, Sask., passed away peacefully and with dignity at his home in Calgary, Alta. on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the age of 54 years.

Rico is survived by his loving wife, Colleen Boudy (nee Ambrock) of 17 years; his mother, Rose (Bill) Oesch of Ruthilda, Sask.; siblings, Rita (Bob) Salmen of Cranbrook, B.C. (Ashley, Amanda, Amy); William (Carrie) Boudy of Rollyview, Alta.

(Faith); Barbara (David) Glackin of Wilkie, Sask. (Katrina and Jamie); Uncle Hank (Sharon) Vodarek of Okanagan Falls, B.C., also numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Rico was predeceased by his father, Edward Boudy in 1986 and both sets of grandparents.

OBITUARIES Yvonne Gallucci June 16, 1943 December 18, 2011 It is with deep sadness that the family of Yvonne announces her passing. Yvonne was predeceased by her husband, Ralph and her oldest sister, Edith. She is survived by her six siblings, Marilyn (John), Albert (Rella), Elizabeth (Garry), Lucianne (Paul), Annette (Rick), and Kim. Left to mourn Mom’s passing are her four daughters, Cindy, Allyson (Kim), Jackie (Doug), and Adrienne (Randy).

She had ¿ve grandchildren, Ryan, Natalia, Renee, Aaaron and Larissa and two greatgrandchildren, Dayton and Ava. She enjoyed the companionship with a wonderful man, Edward.

They did many activiites and took trips together. He was Mom’s angel and we will be forever grateful to him for his love and care towards her. Mom took great joy in gardening, trips to the casino, ¿shing, bowling, cross-stitching and spending time with family. She also loved working as a special care aide and loved all her friends at Stensrud Lodge, Saskatoon, Sask.

A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Westwood Funeral Chapel, Saskatoon. In lieu of Àowers, please send donations to the Diabetes Assocation.

Wilma is survived by her husband, Tom Kelly; daughter, Sharon Kelly (her husband, Jeremy Slobodan) and their children, Abigail and Brady; son, Gregory (his wife, Alicia) Kelly; sisters, Evelyn Bakoway, Irene Eyre, Hattie Dickie; brothers, Gordon Dehr and Ernie Dehr.

She was predeceased by her father, Gustav Dehr; mother, Helen Dehr; brothers, Elmer Dehr, Art Dehr, Wilfred Dehr; and sister, Agnes Housgo.

Prayers were held Friday, December 9, 2011 at 7 p.m. from St. Gabriel Roman Catholic Church, Biggar, Sask.

I wish to thank the students and staff for their dedication and for sharing their many talents with our school community and the community of Biggar. Also, I express my gratitude to the parents for supporting their children in preparation for these activities, as well

We spend a great deal of time and energy, as a school, participating and celebrating the Advent Season. I would like to think that the Jesse Tree and Advent Wreath experiences have reminded all of us at St. Gabriel School what is most important – The Promise of the birth of Jesus and the

Light which directs us, as symbolized with the first two candles of the Advent Wreath. That the Joy we experience and the Love we share during the Christmas Season reminds us of the third and fourth candles of our Wreath. As for our

EI recipient numbers continue to fall in Saskatchewan For the 19th consecutive month, the number of Saskatchewan people receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits dropped.

There was a year-overyear decrease of 3,360 (-26.0 per cent) regular Employment Insurance recipients in October of compared to October 2010 (seasonally adjusted).

This decrease is greater than the national decline of 20.3 per cent.

“Saskatchewan’s strong labour market and today’s news of decreased Employment Insurance recipients in the province show that the people of Saskatchewan are able to find new employment

opportunities, many of them full-time,”Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said December 16.

The Saskatoon area saw a decrease of 480 recipients (-28.7 per cent) for the 11th consecutive decline while the Regina area also saw a decrease of 390 (-38.6 per cent), continuing the trend that began in summer 2010.
