1.4. Contact 02. Situation Update­ Due to the escalation of conflict in the Eastern province, displacements of persons reached maximum numbers. Families from Vavuativu, Pattiapalai, Vellavely, Vaharai, etc have been displaced mostly in camps in the district of Batticaloa A detailed report will be provided on completion of the project.

Food and Nutrition Initially food items were distributed for two weeks. But since there is no income sources, supply of food items both basic and complementary should be continued. Specific emphasis must be made regarding the requirements of food items for children.

Water Supply & Sanitation The eastern part of the country is experiencing a dry period during the month of July to October resulting shortage of drinking water. Wells are dried in resettled areas without any other sources of supply of drinking water. The present supply arrangement is not sufficient to meet the water requirements.

Health In order to provide effective health services, health institutions must function. Immediate requirements such as repairs to the buildings provisions of equipments have been identified.

Vavuniya 65 children in the Sithampuram pre school are provided with nutritional food for one month.

To address the water needs of 652 families in the Sithaparapuram Camp, the project funds were utilized to purchase a water pump and 10 Kg of chlorine. At the same time 53 families were provided with mosquito nets.

Mannar Provision of Samaposha and milk packets to children from pre school and orphanages Under this initiative 750 children of displaced families belonging to 17 preschools and orphanages are receiving Samaposha and milk packets. Each child receives a Samaposha packet and a milk packet in the morning session and will continue to do so for a period of one month. Samaposha contains the mixture of various grains which are of nutritional value and grinded into powder.

Batticaloa 323 children belonging to two schools and an orphanage are receiving nutritional meals.

130 school children from Murukkanthivu Sivasakthi Vidyalayam, Kinnayady and, 133 pre school children from Palacholai preschool, Palacholai are receiving milk packets and nutritional meals such as processed Gram, Gowpi, Mongo beans, and Aval (dried rice) on a routine basis. Once a day in the morning the children are provided with the meal, and is expected to continue for a period of one month 60 children, accommodated with St Ignatius parish were provided personal health care packets, containing toothbrush, paste, soap, and shampoo and washing powders etc, and food items suffice for five weeks.

Trincomalee Provision of Nutritional food items to resettled families in Eachiliampattu Division 900 resettled families living in the Eachiliampattu division were provided with nutritional food items sufficient for a week’s need. The food basket contained vegetables, milk packets and other essential items like mongo beans which are of high nutritional value. The distribution took place on 27 th of July.

The people had resettled after months of displacement which initiated with intensified conflict in the eastern region.

3.2. Planned activities for next month. v Medical clinic in Vavuniya v Nutritional meal programme for the school children will continue in all the districts other ha in Trincomalee.

Monitoring.

Selections, purchasing, distributions etc were done by CHA district officers in close collaboration with the relevant officials in the respective DS divisions. Selection of the beneficiaries was based on the information provided by government officials, and it was cross checked by CHA district staff on conduction field visits. The implementation and financing were supervised by the head office staff.
