A word from the editor

Hello fellow Ilfracombe-ites and welcome to the May edition of your friendly community magazine. At the time of typing, lockdown restrictions have just been eased (stage 2, I believe) and the town is already bustling with visitors from both the local surrounding area as well as further afield. Pub beer gardens are once again a hive of activity as people clammer to enjoy a meal and a pint outside in the sunshine. Dare I say it, but it almost feels like normality is on the horizon. In fact, as I type, the BBC news website states that North Devon has become the first region in England to record zero coronavirus cases in a week (April 3-9). Obviously this is fantastic news and testament to locals adhering to the rules - great job everyone, keep up the good work! Another interesting piece of news came into The Ilfracombe Magazine this month, and that is the appointment of a Tourism, PR and Marketing ambassador for the town. Local Caroline Bramwell has been selected for the role and will focus on promoting the town nationally and supporting the business and hospitality sector in Ilfracombe. This can only be good news. I’ve long felt

that we don’t do enough to blow our own trumpet in Ilfracombe. As Caroline points out in our article on P22, the town is the perfect base for anyone visiting North Devon to explore the rest of the coast and everything it has to offer. The role was the idea of outgoing mayor Val Gates and the timing with this appointment is, in my mind, perfect. Given that most foreign travel is off the cards at present, I think we all know that this summer is likely to be

incredibly busy. But what happens after that, when the cheap holidays to sunny Spain start up again and people all over the UK get the travel itch after all this time at home? We will definitely need a strategy to deal with that - and now is the time to start working on it. I wish Caroline all the very best in her role and look forward to seeing more of our town in the national press!

8 watersports centre takes new step forward

Artists impression of the new Ilfracombe Watersports centre

The £3m investment into a new watersports centre in Ilfracombe has taken another step forward as North Devon Council awards a construction firm the contract to build the project. After a successful tender process, Pearce Construction have been contracted by the council to take on the build, which is set to be a state-of-the-art marine leisure hub. The watersports centre will include community facilities for local clubs including storage for boats, a slipway providing safe and easy access to the water within a given tidal range, disabled access and facilities, and a café with stunning views of the harbour. Initial building works will start on site

in early April, with major works commencing in June. This will involve construction of a new sea wall eight metres beyond the existing one. Local residents will shortly receive additional information on the construction process and the need for the site to be secured during the main part of the works, which will include the temporary closure of the existing slipway. The centre’s primary purpose is to provide new homes for three local watersports clubs, Ilfracombe Gig Club, Y-Sail and Ilfracombe Canoe Club. This new facility will allow them to extend their memberships to the wider community and offer taster events to local residents and visitors.

Another important aim is to provide a site which can be used by the wider community, enabling the public and organised groups to prebook watersports activities through a new Commercial Watersports Communications Hub. The hub will enable local businesses with links to watersports to be part of the centre, offering use of the slipway, storage, shower and welfare facilities, as well as designated trailer parking and interactive advertising/booking facilities - either as part of the Larkstone site or within the wider northern Devon community. It is hoped work will be completed by early summer 2022. Follow North Devon Council updates on Facebook & Twitter.

10 Council backs plans to ban polystyrene boards

Thousands of body boards are discarded in North Devon

Polystyrene bodyboards that litter northern Devon’s coastline and harm the natural environment could soon become a thing of the past, as North Devon Council backs a move to remove them from sale across the district. At a meeting of the council’s Strategy and Resources Committee, councillors agreed to support a campaign by environmental charities in northern Devon to ban the sale of cheap polystyrene boards. Plastic Free North Devon, Plastic Free Torridge and Keep Britain Tidy’s Ocean Recovery Project have all campaigned against the boards and highlighted their detrimental impact on our sea and shore life. Keep Britain Tidy report that

16,000 polystyrene body boards end up discarded on UK beaches every year. These boards crumble easily, disintegrating into small white nuggets that animals can easily mistake for food. Councillors made the decision following a motion brought by Green Party Councillor Robbie Mack and a Q&A with the Chief Executive Officer from Plastic Free North Devon, Claire Moodie. The council has since met with Plastic Free North Devon and progressed plans to write to national supermarkets and retailers in North Devon, requesting that they immediately remove the boards from sale. It says it will, where feasible, support the zero charge hire of body

boards to remove financial barriers to those facing financial hardship. Councillor Robbie Mack says: “We are delighted to support our local environmental charities in this important move towards ridding our district of these cheap, polystyrene body boards that cause so much harm to our coastline and environment. Whilst we cannot ban the boards, we can help in the push to make them less socially acceptable and we will be encouraging the voluntary support of retailers across the region to remove these items from sale.” Chief Executive Officer from Plastic Free North Devon, Claire Moodie says: “Plastic Free North Devon are proud to be partnering in this campaign. There is considerable concern across the region about the negative impact these polystyrene boards have on our local wildlife. The success of our wooden belly board rental scheme last summer confirmed that if we can make alternatives available, people will use them.” More information on the campaign to remove polystyrene board boards from sale in the district is available on Plastic Free North Devon’s website at www. plasticfreenorthdevon.org.

12 theatre company returns with two smash hits

As the country moves towards re-opening, Ilfracombe’s Small Pond Productions are pleased to announce their return to The Landmark with not one, but two shows in 2021 (restrictions permitting). When the country moves to stage three of the road map, the cast of Little Shop of Horrors will venture back into rehearsals at The SPACE to bring this hit musical to Ilfracombe. Little Shop of Horrors was due to be presented in April 2020 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. The show tells the story of meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn who stumbles across a new breed of plant he names ‘Audrey II’ after his co-worker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises

unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it - blood! But over time Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination. Featuring brilliant songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman the show was made famous when it was turned into a movie in 1986 starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene. Director Lee Baxendale said: “This is a great show and it is a privilege to direct, and work alongside, so many talented performers. It promises to be something really special and we’re all really looking forward to finally getting to perform this great musical.” Little Shop of Horrors is scheduled for July 22-24 at The Landmark. Although

it’s a bit early to be turning to thoughts of Christmas, that is exactly what the Small Pond team are doing, as they have managed to bag the performance rights to Elf The Musical - a comedy based on the classic Will Ferrell Christmas movie of the same name. The company is currently on the lookout for new members to join them in what promises to be the biggest show they have ever staged. Julie Moore from Small Pond, said: “We’re so excited to have gained permission to perform this show and we look forward to welcoming existing and new members into the cast. The set and costumes we’ve hired are fabulous and now we need singers, dancers and actors of all ages and abilities to bring this magical Christmas tale to life.” If you are interested in being involved in any way, please visit the Small Pond website at www.smallpondproductions.weebly. com, email smallpondinfo@ gmail.com or find them on Facebook. Elf The Musical will be performed at the Landmark from December 1-4. Tickets for both shows are available from The Landmark and Queens Theatre box offices and online.

22 ilfracombe appoints PR & tourism ambassador

Ilfracombe has appointed a PR, Tourism and Marketing Ambassador to maximise opportunities to make the comeback from lockdown not just a great one for the summer months, but an ongoing strategy for the ‘out of season’ months. The appointment of Caroline Bramwell, who has been managing PR and marketing strategies for 30 years, and who lives in the town, will focus on putting Ilfracombe on the map as a Top UK destination, supporting the hospitality sector and businesses across Ilfracombe. Caroline, who has been involved with promoting many local businesses over the years, brings a wealth of experience and connections that will benefit the town. Caroline said: “I am absolutely delighted to

have been appointed as Ilfracombe’s first Ambassador. We live in a beautiful part of the world with an enviable sense of community. Ilfracombe deserves to be recognised for its character, history and diversity; from stunning coastal walks and idyllic beaches, to the plethora of talented artists, attractions, accommodation styles and eateries.” The objectives of the appointment are to change the perception of Ilfracombe and improve the visitor experience; to collaboratively work with local businesses, hospitality, tourism and the High Street, to attract more high quality guests with spending power. Caroline will be working to create opportunities for Ilfracombe to be featured in the press and media and attract visitors.

The appointment of an Ambassador was the wish of outgoing Mayor, Val Gates, whose desire was to leave a lasting legacy for the town. Val said: “Ilfracombe, for many years, has been a little reluctant to shout about what an amazing destination it is, yet at the same time bemoaning the fact that more attention is paid to other towns and resorts that do not match our offering. Our economy is principally based on the hospitality industry and after the hammering that has taken in the last 15 months we realised that we should come out of restrictions with a bang and not a whimper, generating more visitors to the town over a longer season. To achieve that we needed to engage someone who could help us hit the ground running and we have found that in Caroline.” The appointment has been made collaboratively with Ilfracombe Town Council and the Ilfracombe District Tourism Association (IDTA). Rod Chatfield, Chair of IDTA, said: “Ilfracombe is one of the most progressive towns for food and art. It’s a great location for visitors to explore further afield and now we have the opportunity communicate with a much louder voice.”

COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION It’s that time of year again. All the local politicians will be out, asking for your vote, and telling you about all the exciting things that they will make happen. I’m no different of course, but there’s one thing to bear in mind. …..There is one IMPORTANT difference? With me, you KNOW that you have someone with his finger on the pulse. Someone with a track record of ‘having a word’ to get things done, and someone who doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty if it needs be to make things happen. In the town, we’re making big strides on improving the roads and drains. The contract for reopening the Tyrell has been signed (although staff are busy elsewhere on Covid reassignments at the moment), and Devon County Council provided massive response to all the local care homes, to ensure our elderly relatives had the best chance of quality care throughout the crisis. In fact, we were in the top 5 councils, nationwide, for our management. The infant school has been re-assessed as ‘Good’, and there are plans afoot for more pre school childcare. I’m currently hoping to ensure more sea front attractions, I’m working on natural anti flood measures and tree planting, and am in talks about restarting a ferry service, but that’s the future, as you can see, I’m always working hard for Ilfracombe, so that’s why I’m asking you to vote for me? Please?

So on May 6 …… ! VOTE Paul CRABB th

The view with COMBEBIRD

Blue skies, warm weather, clean air, beautiful beer gardens and stunning surroundings - it’s no wonder people are flocking to Ilfracombe. With foreign travel unavailable at the moment, you can see why so many visitors have used their first gasp of postlockdown freedom to visit the town. It’s also great that so many local traders have used the time in lockdown wisely to spruce up their businesses with a lick of paint or a deep clean. Overall the town is looking fantastic and ready for what promises to be a big influx of visitors this summer. Combebird’s vista from the top of Capstone Hill shows off the hazy summer days we all love so much. See you in the beer garden!
