A word from the editor

Welcome one and all to another edition of The Ilfracombe Magazine, your free and friendly monthly publication and directory of local businesses. As we usher in the month of March very little seems to have changed - it’s still cold (finger-numbingly chilly as I type) and the pandemic, along with its tiresome restrictions, continue. I’m sure everyone is just as bored as I am about the whole situation, but it’s good to see some light on the horizon. As someone who has been volunteering at the Covid vaccine centre at North Devon Leisure Centre in Barnstaple (along with many other members of Ilfracombe Round Table and Rotary clubs), I’ve been encouraged to see so many older people making the often difficult journey to get themselves protected against this horrible virus. It’s also been extremely heartening to see the people of Ilfracombe continuing to honour the rules that have been upon us all for so long now. Whenever I go out for a walk I see people doing the right thing - keeping their distance, giving others plenty of space and being respectful of everyone else’s wishes. For our part, this is all we

PIC: Allan Collins

can do and I’m certain our fantastic record of complaince has contributed to the very low case numbers we’ve been seeing recently. In short, well done and keep up the good work! In other news, there has been a welcome new visitor to the town recently in the form of a friendly seal (pictured above, in case you thought this was my new headshot)! The animal has been pictured by several onlookers but my favourite shot is this close up by talented snapper Allan Collins. The fearless creature has become a regular at the

harbour and is certainly not afraid of getting up close and personal with spectators (particularly if there’s food involved). In fact, there’s a truly stunning video on Facebook of the plucky seal battling a fisherman for his catch. That said, I believe the advice is not to feed this little fellow, however friendly he may be, as he was recently released into the wild and needs to learn how to fend for himself.

8 rnli recruiting lifeguards in north devon

RNLI lifeguard Patrick Le Good (Pic: RNLI)

Recruitment for this season’s team of RNLI beach lifesavers has opened, ready for the summer. Beach lifeguards are at the forefront of the charity’s lifesaving work, proactively managing the safety of the beach, offering safety advice to visitors and rescuing those in difficulty. This year, the RNLI will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of their lifeguard service. Successful applicants will receive world-class lifesaving training, enjoy good rates of pay and develop valuable skills for a future career. Patrick Le Good, 43, is now a Senior Lifeguard in north Devon, having started in 2015. He said: “I started lifeguarding to do something more meaningful with my life. It fits in with my lifestyle perfectly, it gives me free time to travel with

my wife in the winter and surf all over the world. It also gives me the opportunity to get in the sea every day, keeping me fit and healthy. I love the surf conditions we get in north Devon and how busy the beaches get - lifeguarding here is demanding yet very rewarding. I remember us doing over 50 rescues in a day once at Croyde! The best thing is looking forward to going to work every day, and having the beach as my workplace, while doing something that really helps others.” Matthew Whitley, Lead Lifeguard Supervisor for the area, said: “If you are looking for a unique and rewarding summer job, lifeguarding could be the perfect opportunity for you. The job is demanding and requires a clear head,

commitment, and dedication. On our north Devon beaches, confidence in surf conditions is crucial. We’re looking for people with courage, determination and the ability to put their training into action and make the right decision if someone’s life is in danger. Applicants will need to have a Beach Lifeguard Award from either the RLSS, SLSGB or SLSWales. The skills our lifeguards gain can be an ideal first step towards many career paths or offer invaluable experience for those studying or training in a similar field. We’ve had lifeguards who are studying for jobs in the emergency services or even volunteer for other rescue agencies.’ For more information or to apply for a lifeguard position visit the website at www.rnli.org/BeALifeguard

10 local councillor leads vital eco-commitments

Ilfracombe councillor Netti Pearson

Further commitments to tackling environmental issues have been made by members of North Devon Council. Lead Member for the Environment, Ilfracombe Councillor Netti Pearson, put forward a motion which was backed by members to support the Climate and Ecology Bill currently before parliament which would see the government having to develop an emergency strategy to step up efforts to reduce harmful emissions and protect wildlife. Cllr Robbie Mack asked the council to look at the issue of polystyrene bodyboards which are regularly discarded and then break up causing a negative impact to the natural environment on land and in the ocean. Members strongly supported the idea but voted to refer it to the

council’s Strategy and Resources Committee so the motion could be strengthened further. Council Leader David Worden asked members to support his motion to ask the government to allow the continued use of virtual committee meetings after the pandemic. He suggested that a hybrid solution is introduced where members who have long distances to travel for meetings or members with parental and caring responsibilities can opt to use the virtual facility but if members prefer to come to meetings in person, they still could. Members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the motion, recognising the positive impact that fewer car journeys would have on the environment. Lead Member for Climate Change Cllr Caroline Leav-

er proposed that the council stepped up its fight against litter by working in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and local businesses. Members agreed to refer this issue to Strategy and Resources who will be considering a litter strategy at its next meeting. Cllr Pearson says: “Humans have already caused irreversible climate change, the impacts of which are being felt in the UK and around the world. We need to do much more and we need to do it quickly. The costs of failing to address this crisis will far outstrip the investments required to prevent it. Investing now will bring many benefits in the form of good jobs, breathable towns and cities and thriving communities.” Cllr Leaver says: “After seeing how dramatically litter levels declined earlier on in the pandemic, it is now becoming a common issue again in parks and on footpaths and cycleways. Although our staff do an amazing job, they cannot possibly do it all, particularly being so stretched during the pandemic. North Devon Council is committed to tackling litter in our district and to working for cleaner streets and public spaces across our communities.”

12 £6,600 for new play equipment for oxford park

New climbing apparatus will soon be installed in a popular Ilfracombe play area, thanks to a £6,600 funding boost from North Devon Council. Councillors have agreed to allocate the money to Oxford Park play area, which has recently had fitness equipment removed as it had eroded and is beyond repair. In 2019, there was a

consultation with the children from Ilfracombe Academy who were asked what kind of play equipment they wanted to see in the park. The most popular type voted for was climbing apparatus. North Devon Council leader David Worden said: “We listened to the children’s opinions and are now planning to install brand new climbing apparatus for them. We hope they will enjoy it and get many years of fun from using it. Funding from local developments means that we can put money back into our communities which everyone can benefit from.” Under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act, contributions can be sought from developers towards the costs of providing extra community and social infrastructure. council leads charge against sly-tipping North Devon Council is launching a campaign to raise awareness amongst residents and businesses about activities that are considered flytipping, even when carried out unwittingly. Putting bins out early, placing domestic or trade waste in public litter bins and dumping waste in another person’s bin, can all amount to acts of flytipping. These often unintentional acts of flytipping are called ‘slytipping’ by the council. Slytipping incorporates activities that residents and businesses may think are acceptable, but in the eyes of the law are not. It includes: *presenting additional waste, known as side waste, next to your usual black bin collection (unless advised by the council in advance that it will be permitted as an exception) *early or late presentation of black bins or recycling

*dumping waste in someone else’s bin *dumping domestic or trade waste in public litter bins *dumping trade waste as domestic waste *dumping waste in a collection point that is not your own Flytipping is a criminal offence, punishable by a fine up to £50,000 or 12 months imprisonment if convicted at a Magistrates’ Court. If the offence goes onto the Crown Court and leads to a conviction, it can attract an unlimited fine and up to five years imprisonment. More information about flytipping including what is is, what penalties it carries and how to avoid common mistakes is available at www.northdevon. gov.uk/flytipping. Cases of suspected flytipping can be reported to the council online: northdevon.gov.uk/flytipping or by calling 01271 388870.

The Ilfracombe Marketing group met in January to discuss how we can market the town as an all year round destination. Early indications from businesses is that Summer and hopefully Easter (depending on lock down) will be busy with lots of people having ‘staycations’. The town needs to be prepared for this and we’re already working hard to make sure the town is in the best shape it can be to welcome visitors. The group also looked at how we can market ourselves as an all year round destination so businesses so not have to close during the winter periods. We’ve set aside money to assist with a high quality video promoting the town and also to undertake some social media promotions. At Monday evening’s council meeting the potential purchase of the High Street car park was discussed at length and is pending the agreement of a loan from the Public Works Loan Board. Public consultation via social media, Survey Monkey, phone and where possible face to face, showed considerable support for the acquisition of this important asset in the High Street. New CCTV has been installed in the Ilfracombe Centre and Lantern. You may have noticed the finger posts around the town are looking shabby with the paint falling off the signs. These are less than two years old and we’re talking with the company who installed them to rectify the issue or we will consider taking legal action. Work on Cheyne Beach sewage pumping station started on 11th January and will last for 10 weeks.

The view with COMBEBIRD

Pictures are a wonderful thing - they capture history, document lives and bring back memories our brains may have long waylaid. You can make anything look pretty with good photography, even a corner shop comes alive with a bit of colour. In 2012 there was a statistic going aroud that absolutely blew my mind - that 10% of all the photos ever taken in history were taken in the previous 12 months. This, of course, was put down to the advent of smart phones which placed extremely decent digital cameras in everyone’s pockets. There are some who feel this has cheapened the art of photography, but as someone who just loves to see beautiful images, I simply must disagree.

Cat of the month! Fuzzy Dear little Fuzzy has been a stray for at least a year ( one of the problems of not neutering and not having a microchip! ) and it has taken its toll on his poor little body - he was very thin and lethargic from not being treated for worms. Now this is all behind him and after his treatment is gaining weight nicely, coming out of his shell to reveal a very sweet and loving lad ! Quiet and unassuming by nature but also very affectionate and loves a head bump and to wind himself around your legs ! Dear Fuzzy thinks his needs will be a quiet home, to become a companion cat, to have plenty of good food and his own human that will let him develop in to the pretty little cat he is !
