A special word from the editor
Verity turned blue. It was an extraordinary moment in extraordinary times. There’s no doubt that Ilfracombe’s first lady shone like a beacon on that warm spring evening, which is so beautifully depicted on this month’s front cover thanks to Charmain Lovett’s photography. But it was also a moment which was open to interpretation. To many, the lighting up of our town’s most prominent feature was a symbol of hope. Her sword held triumphantly to the sky acting as both a defiant proclamation that we will prevail, and also a salute to the everyday heroes who will make our survival possible. But much like Verity since her inception, the recent projection of light onto her bronze figure will also have been read a different way by some. The blue colour will have reflected many people’s mood. It will have summed up how they felt having gone two months without hugging their parents or supping a pint with friends in The Thatched Inn beer garden. The extra spotlight exposing her more controversial features which are upsetting to some but perhaps easier to wash over in normal, brighter times. It seemed a perfect
allegory for the situation we find ourselves in. So much hope, but still a blue mood. There has doubtless been much suffering and sacrifice over the last few months, but the way Ilfracombe has reacted has been inspiring. As restrictions begin to gently ease, we must keep in mind that this is a marathon not a sprint. The guidance will get looser, the onus on individuals will be greater. The emphasis has already shifted to the public to stay alert and control the virus, and some see this as handing the lunatics the keys to
the asylum. However, in Ilfracombe we have no choice but to prove that we can take care of each other. This is not an ‘us and them’ situation. By showing the right compassion and even more patience, we can shield ourselves and our community from whatever might be down the track, even if we feel that others aren’t shielding our community. Stay strong, and stay safe everyone.

town turns blue in spectacular tribute To amazing nhs workers
In a timely tribute to NHS workers, some of the town’s most high profile landmarks were turned blue this past month. These stunning images from Charmain Lovett show the scene on Ilfracombe harbour where Damien Hirst’s Verity statue and St Nicholas Chapel on Lantern Hill were illuminated with blue lighting. The tributes marked International Nurses Day and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale but also celebrated the work of nurses during the coronavirus pandemic. The request to turn North Devon blue came from Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, which asked people to display blue lights, wear blue or put something in their windows. Town car park becomes testing centre
An Ilfracombe car park is doubling as a testing centre in the fight against coronavirus. Ilfracombe Town Council’s car park at Ropery Road has become a Covid-19 swab hub. At the time of going to print, the council has said the car park will be closed every Friday and Tuesday until further notice to allow testing to take place. All vehicles must be moved by 9pm the night before. The hub became operational from Friday, May 15. Testing at the site is only available for those who have booked on the Gov.uk website. It has been stressed that no dropins will be permitted and that those who do arrive
without an appointment will be turned away. You can book a test by visiting www. gov.uk/apply-coronavirustest or over the telephone by calling 111. The process for the testing station is as follows: - People will only attend if they have been booked in previously and are logged. - People cannot just turn up and ask to be tested. They will be turned away. - Those attending will be asked to complete a form whilst sitting in their car - They must arrive by car and keep all windows up until a nurse is ready for them - They will wind down the window for the test, hand in
the papers and then wind it up again - They will then depart - All PPE changes will be done in a gazebo in the car park - The unit will be dismantled and cleaned down after every session. A spokesman for Ilfracombe Town Council said: “The NHS has said this is a tested process and has been done elsewhere in supermarket car parks and public car parks. It is very well controlled and safety of the area, staff and those visiting is of the upmost importance. Everyone must maintain social distancing except nurses who will be wearing PPE.

We asked for YOUR unsung community heroes in Ilfracombe during the coronavirus outbreak - and you responded in droves. The lockdown we’ve all endured for many, many weeks has put a lot of things into perspective. For some, working from home has not been too different, for others it’s been a huge shift. Some have been furloughed with no work, while others have no choice but to continue - and this picture perfectly illustrates that. In Ilfracombe, and all around the UK, fishermen are heading out to sea to help keep us fed, often for days at a time, away from the friends, families and loved ones. Cat of the month! Star & Shady Ready for homing once restrictions allow are brother and sister Shady and Star. Unlike some sublings, this pair of 3 year olds are the greatest of friends and are really happy in each others company, so will need to be homed together. Access to the outdoors will be essential, and they're used to using a catflap. Extremely friendly, and very playful they seem to get on with everyone, including children. Nothing seems to phase them, and even after an unusually long stay with CP due to the virus lockdown they're happy and interested in everything going on around them.
