A word from the editor
Hello and welcome to our February edition. Little did we know when we went to press last month that we’d be thrust into another national lockdown, though if we’re honest all the warning signs were there. However, we are also delighted to see that the vaccine has made its way to North Devon, with hundreds of our most vulnerable residents already having received their first dose. This has been faciltated by some fantastic local medical staff as well as dozens of volunteers who have bandied together - great work by all involved! I don’t want to dwell on the Covid situation, we’ve all had enough of it, but I would urge everyone to do their bit and stick to the rules to stop the spread of this evil virus and get us back to some sort of normality as soon as possible. Moving on then, you can’t have failed to notice the amazing works of beach art both on the cover of this month’s issue and just above. You may even have spotted them on some of our local beaches. They are the work talented Ilfracombe resident Jill Burley who has been creating beach art with her daughter Heather since she was a little girl. Jill says she loves the idea of people
stumbling upon her work, usually at her preferred beaches of Hele Bay, Rapparee Cove and Wildersmouth - though she does also wander further afield to Lee Bay and Combesgate in Woolacombe. Jill said: “I nearly always create my pieces below the high-water mark which means that the sea reclaims them after a few hours. I enjoy knowing they are only temporary. “For me making a piece is like doing a jigsaw. I choose my stones, draw a simple outline and fill it in. It’s as easy as that. Lots of people
have asked me since March what I would like to do with all my photo’s. When Heather and I can start meeting up again we were thinking of maybe doing a calendar later in the year.” Anyone interested in Jill’s creations can find her on her Facebook page by searching Jillybee Beach Art or visit the photography page A Place In North Devon. 10 Watersports centre gets £1.5m boost
An additional £1.5m is on it’s way to help finance building the new Ilfracombe Watersports Centre following a successful funding bid by North Devon Council. In August the council was invited by The Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (HotSW LEP) to develop a business case to bid for additional funding from the Government’s Getting Building Fund for the project. The watersports centre was selected as a suitable project because it is ‘shovel ready’ with the council being able to demonstrate that it would create jobs, support economic recovery across the South West and that spending on the project would be complete by March 2022. Now that funding has been confirmed contractors have been invited to tender for the project. Pending a suc-
cessful tender process it is hoped work will start on site by April 2021 with completion of the project approximately 10 months later. Lead Member for Economic Development at North Devon Council, Councillor Malcolm Prowse, says: “It’s fantastic news for the Ilfracombe Watersports Centre project that our funding bid was successful. Our project team have worked tirelessly on the bid so I’m delighted this hard work has paid off and we can now get going on this project. Once completed the watersports centre will be a real investment and asset for Ilfracombe as well as a welcome boost for the North Devon economy and tourism. We’re so lucky here in North Devon to be surrounded by fantastic coastline so the new centre will be a real opportunity for our residents to get out
there and make the most of it from the water.” Chair of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, Karl Tucker, says “The HotSW LEP’s Getting Building Fund aims to support ready-to-go projects that will deliver new jobs and contribute to our area’s post-COVID recovery. We are pleased to have agreed just over £1.5 million from this fund towards the building of the new Ilfracombe Watersports Centre, which will support the local economic recovery, create jobs and provide a great new facility for both tourists and residents to benefit from.” Residents can stay up-todate with news and developments on the project by following the council’s facebook @northdevoncouncil and twitter @ndevoncouncil pages.

North Devon Council will maintain as much of its business as usual as it can during the latest national lockdown although customers can expect delays in some areas due to increased workloads created by the coronavirus response. Waste and recycling services are currently carrying out scheduled collections but are unable to return for missed collections after 48 hours. People are asked to take their rubbish or recycling back in if it hasn’t been collected within two days and put it out on their next scheduled collection day. The Customer Services team is available on the phone (01271 327711), email and online but reception areas are closed at Lynton House, Barnstaple, The Amory Centre in South Molton and The Ilfracombe Centre. The Housing team will continue to be available via telephone (01271 388870) or via the NDC website. The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon building is closed although schools can call 01271 346747 or email them about remote learning sessions. Parks and play areas, car parks and public toilets remain open but skateparks and the BMX track are closed. Customers are urged to use the contactless RingGo payment method in car parks to minimise the amount of touching
of machines. An essential items market will continue in Barnstaple Pannier Market on Fridays from 15 January. Planning site inspections will continue as long as it is safe to do so and Building Control will be carrying out remote inspections where possible, particularly where it involves being inside a domestic property. Council Leader Cllr David Worden says: “We thank our customers in advance for their patience and support during this difficult time and we are grateful for all the positive feedback we’ve had throughout the pandemic, it really has boosted morale.” Anyone in need of support during the lockdown, who can’t seek help from friends, family or neighbours, should call Customer Services on 01271 388280 or use the online form at my.northdevon.gov.uk/service/Request_ for_assistance.

As I mentioned in my editor’s comment, I’m really hoping January is going to mark the start of a transitional year for everyone here in Ilfracombe. And nothing reminds us more of the earth’s natural transition than the cold winter months. While some understandably find this dark, wet and quiet time of year somewhat melancholy - and there’s no denying this winter will be one of the loneliest we’ve ever had to endure - for those looking, there is always beauty to be found, just like these frosty leaves in all their icy glory. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but if you try to focus on those positive little gems wherever you might find them, it may raise a much-needed smile.
