Council consults on Ticket Touts order
The public are being asked to share their views on plans to introduce a new Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) at Ilfracombe Harbour. North Devon Council are carrying out a consultation on whether to introduce a three year PSPO, following on from the success of the previous year-long order, which was put into place in April 2019. The order was introduced to control competitive ticket touting among licensed boat trip providers at the harbour during the busy summer months, and to give trip providers a more balanced opportunity to secure customers. As previously, the proposed PSPO will restrict the soliciting of services at Ilfracombe Harbour by word of mouth,
handing out leaflets or other means, unless under the express terms of a licence or the written permission of the Harbourmaster. Chairman of Ilfracombe Harbour Board Cllr Geoff Fowler says: “There is a fantastic choice of boat trips available at the harbour, from fishing trips to dolphin cruises. The PSPO will ensure there is a level playing field for all operators and that visitors can make their own choices about which excursions to choose. Our Harbourmaster has discussed the proposed PSPO with the Ilfracombe Harbour Board and Harbour Forum. Anyone affected by the plans can talk to our Harbourmaster or go online for more information.� You can read the proposed

18 Council to run dotto train after year off
After a summer in storage, Ilfracombe’s beloved Dotto Train is set to hit the streets once again in the 2020 season. The £170,000 land train was first operated in the town in 2013, but didn’t run in 2019 after no-one came forward to run the service. The train had previously been run by local transport company Filers, but in 2019 they announced they no longer wanted to run the service. An open procurement process was started last year but failed to secure a new operator. However, North Devon Council have now agreed to lease the land train to Ilfracombe Town Council.
The decision was made at a recent meeting of North Devon Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee. A report to the meeting said there has been little or no interest from commercial operators. It went on: “A brief conversation with industry experts suggests that Dotto services work in larger towns and cities where there are larger visitor numbers to make it viable, but in towns such as Ilfracombe, it would always be a ‘hobby’ business.” The lease covers the next two years and allows the town council to run the service as they see fit, although there will be a
clause added to prevent the Dotto being left unused in the container for any length of time. This was one of seven options that were presented to the committee when they met this week to determine the future of the Dotto train. The train has been a popular fixture in the town since it was purchased back in 2013, with the vast majority of funding - £163,000 - coming from the European Union’s Leader 4 Programme which is designed to help regeneration projects. Fishing is a big part of Ilfracombe - it’s the raison d’être of our beautiful harbour and an integral part of the fabric of our town. It may not be as big an industry as it used to be (and who knows what effect Brexit will have on it - though I’m not geting into that here) but Ilfracombe without fishing just wouldn’t feel right. For most of us, the extent of our knowledge of the town’s fishing industry are the big orange boats in the harbour and what you see in the picture above - but don’t forget there are dozens of hardworking fishermen behind these implements who are out at sea for days, away from their families and in often thoroughly unpleasant conditions. Keep up the good work folks!
