Without doubt Ilfracombe’s biggest event of the year.

Thousands of people flock to the town and pack the area near the war memorial to see the switch flicked before heading up the High Street for some delicious food, mulled wine and a spot of late night shopping.

There’s nothing more magical than when Santa does his rounds of the town giving out presents to all the boys and girls - a fantastic example of the town’s community spirit and kind-hearted volunteering.

There are some houses in Ilfracombe that really go to town when it comes to Christmas lights. Some of the best can be found at Whittingham Road, Fern Way and St Brannock’s Road - a fun evening walk with the kids.

Knocking off early to head to the pub after a year of hard work is undertandably popular - and there’s always a great atmosphere out and about with plenty of amusing Christmas outfits to giggle at.

A festive window display is a must for many of the town’s shops. Tinker Tailor’s, Pedlars and Hairport are usually among the top contenders.

6. The Ilfracombe Academy Christmas Concert

If you’re looking for an event to give your festive cheer a boost, this is it. Traditional carols, modern songs and some very sweet readings make for a wonderfully heartwarming evening.

7. A bracing Christmas day walk to see the sea

After a hearty breakfast and a few presents, a bit of fresh air is called for before lunch. The sea front and harbour are popular spots where festive families can often be found taking in a deep breath of crsip, cool sea air (while the children try out their new bikes)!

the royal marine base at chivenor - PIC: google

RMB CHIVENOR to close The Royal Marine Base at Chivenor will close by 2027 as part of a Ministry of Defence scheme to save £3 billion by 2040. The announcement was made last month by the defence secretary, Michael Fallon.

The base is currently used by 24 Engineer Regiment, Royal Engineers and the Commando Logistics Regiment, but under the new plans the two regiments would be ‘consolidated’ in South Devon.

The decision has been criticised by many, including former North Devon MP and defence minister Nick Harvey who saidd he was ‘shocked and dismayed’ by the news. Mr Harvey - along with several other local politicians - has called for people to campaign against the move.

There have been several suggestions as to what should be done with the large base once it has been vacated by the military in 11 years’ time. Housing and business use are among the more realistic predictions, but there are some calling for it to be reinstated as a civilian airport, while others think the site should be used for some sort of large-scale attraction such as a new theme park or indoor ski centre. Whatever happens, it will be sad to see the base go.

DOGGY TOY DRIVE Dogs Trust Ilfracombe has launched an urgent appeal for dog toys for the homeless hounds at the rehoming centre to enjoy. Staff are asking for donations of all shapes and sizes – from squeakies to tug toys, chewers to Kongs – anything which will help their dogs beat the boredom whilst they wait for their forever homes.

Elise Watson, Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre Manager, said: “The dogs get so much enjoyment from toys such as balls, Frisbees and tug-toys when they are playing with our canine carers, but importantly toys really help to keep their brains busy when they are in their kennels too. Hard-wearing ones like squeaky toys and Kongs are perfect.”

The centre would love large pre-loved or new toys to be donated, but they must be specifically for dogs. 16 combE-unity Each month we speak to one of Ilfracombe’s amazing community groups to find out a bit more about them and What they get up to. This month it’s the Ilfracombe Compass rotary club...

Who is in charge?

Our current president is Howard Lowe.

How many members do we have?

We have 30 members currently but more would be welcome.

Where and when do we meet?

We meet on a Monday evening - twice a month (the first and third Monday) - at Ilfracombe Golf Club.

So, what exactly do you do?

The Compass Rotary Club is the newest of the two Rotary Clubs in Ilfracombe. We aim to raise money for good causes (particularly local

dressing up for children in need charities) whilst having a good time. The club does not follow many of the formal ways of many Rotary clubs - we are informal, come from a variety of backgrounds, a friendly bunch of people to spend time with.

During the year we raise many thousands of pounds for good causes. The main photo above shows us dressed up raising money for Children in Need. We also organise the popular annual Woolacombe 10k Beach Run. and the Big Breakfast raises much money for North Devon Cancer Care.

Our newest venture is the Exmoor Equitrek - a horse

treking event over Exmoor.

We also work closely with the other Ilfracombe Rotary Club on the famous Startrek Challenge. This is now in its 25th year and has raised nearly £800,000 for local charities.

We regularly support other local ventures, often by marshalling events.

VERITY GETS A NEW VIEWING PLATFORM

THE COVE TOILETS The toilet block at the Cove in Ilfracombe was closed by North Devon Council at the end of November.

The council has been reviewing the usage and cost of council-owned public conveniences across the district.

They say use of the Cove toilets had been gradually declining and vandalism was an ongoing problem. In 2015/16 the toilets cost the council £19,375, which includes £6,000 cleaning costs.

Executive Member responsible for public conveniences, Councillor Rodney Cann, said: “We received some public representation to keep the toilet block open, but members have to take into account the particularly low use and the close proximity to very wellused council-owned toilets at the Pier.

“We did consult and take into account the views of Ilfracombe Harbour Board and

and will really improve the area around the statue. The harbour is a busy, working environment as well as a popular visitor destination, so the work will be closely managed to prevent disruption.”

VERITY FROM LANTERN HILL A new seating and information area next to the Verity sculpture in Ilfracombe is being installed. Work began at the start of November to relandscape the area around the sculpture to provide a larger viewing platform, seating, lighting and an information lectern.

Damien Hirst’s 20 metre sculpture, Verity, was loaned to North Devon Council by For Giving CIC in 2012. Since then it has become a popular draw for tourists and this work will further enhance the Pier area and improve the visitor experience.

OK, OK - I know it hasn’t actually been snowing (or at least it hadn’t when we went to print) but seeing as this is the December edition and we’re all feeling festive and (in some cases) praying for snow, I thought it might be good to have a bit of a flashback picture to get us all in the mood. This lovely image was Tweeted recently by eXcentriX and I, for one, absolutely love it! In our ‘Seven reasons why Christmas in Ilfracombe is great’ feature on page 10, we note that the festive season in our town is a really special time of year - but let’s be honest, we haven’t had a white Christmas for many years now and there are lots of us who can’t wait to break out the sledges. Could 2016 be the year? One can only hope!

A bit of a change from our 4th Saturday concerts as it was a bit too close to Christmas, so on the 2nd Saturday, we have the return of a Devon favourite for A Causley Christmas, a seasonal treat in the lead-up to the festive period.

Five times a Radio 2 Folk Award nominee, Jim is passionate about traditional song and particularly that of his native West Country. He has a natural gift for interpreting traditional song, with a deep, rich voice - sometimes accompanying himself with accordion - and a relaxed, even playful, stage presence.

As well as working and recording solo, he has been combined with other renowned musicians and singers: Lauren McCormick and Emily Portman as Devil’s Interval, and Essex musicians Mawkin as Mawkin: Causley; and has toured with Waterson:Carthy, Steve Knightley and Kate Rusby.

A while ago, he set to music many of his relative Charles Causley’s poems, and recorded them in Charles’ cottage to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his death. More recently, Jim has been writing songs himself, touring with 3 Daft Moneys guitarist Lukas Drinkwater, and on occasions reuniting with Devil’s Interval.

He has recently been commissioned to set to music the poems of another Cornish poet, Jack Clemo in honour of the

jIM causley centenary of his birth. This has resulted in a new album, “The Clay Hymnal” with Clemo expert, Luke Thompson and a number of Cornish musicians.

A review of one of his recent concerts described him as “possessed of a resonant and evocative voice, and with high standards that bring an integrity to enhance the warmth of his work. The combination is rare and the result is that… his exploration [of his songs and music] is infectious and rewarding.” With great variety in his repertoire, Christmas or not, a warmly merry evening can be guaranteed!

A number of local performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience.

On Sunday 18th, Shammick Acoustic will again be hosting the Midwinter Carols Night in

the bar of The George & Dragon in Combe Martin. Voices and instruments are welcome, and there are books of carols, with and without musical notation. If you fancy a good sing, this is goint to be the place to be. A collection is taken to raise funds for the Friends of St. Peter’s, a charity which helps with the upkeep of the fabric of the parish church.
