Contracts will be for an initial 6 month period with a view to extending further and ultimately leading to permanent employment. We have the following shift pattern available: Alternating shift: Mon - Fri 06.00 - 14.00 and 14.00 - 22.00 (37.5 hrs/wk)* The work is varied, of a light and clean nature where attention to detail and quality of workmanship are essential. A word from the editor
As I write this (in mid-July) I am sat absolutely sweltering in the midst of one of the hottest heatwaves the UK has ever seen. The temperature today is in the low thirties and set to get even hotter tomorrow. I’m not one of those who complains when it’s too hot and moans when it rains, but when the Met Office issues its first ever red weather warning for heat, you know it’s going to cause issues! That said, the good weather is welcome after two years of Covid and certainly makes the town look its best - lush green hills, blue skies and turqoise seas
are why we choose to live in this perfect little corner of earth. Speaking of the sea, we are delighted to welcome back one of the town’s most loved events this month - the Sea Ilfracombe Maritime Festival. This wonderful free event is back on the 3rd and 4th of September and with plenty on offer for both locals and visitors alike. As well as the live music stage and fantastic selection of food and drink at the Ropery Road car park, there’s lots of children’s activities and entertainment - including the wandering pirates (everyone loves Jack Spar-

row!). There will also be a fishing competition, Punch & Judy show, all manner of craft stalls, a crab fest at the Yacht club and even an exhibition from the Royal Marines. Sea Ilfracombe is another example of a fantastic free event which is organised entirely by volunteers - so if you can, make sure you get yourselves down there and show them some support. The town thrives on events like these and we need to make the most of such opportunities.

the return of sea ilfracombe festival
The Sea Ilfracombe Festival is back again this year and takes place all around the harbour on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September. The free event boasts live music, children’s activities and entertainment, pirates, great food outlets, craft stalls and a fun fishing competition. The live music, food and craft stalls will be located at the Ropery car park from midday on the Saturday and Sunday. Before this, on Saturday, on the harbour beach will be the children’s sandcastle competition starting at around 10.30am and the Punch and Judy will also be there, together with the
friendliest of pirates. Bring your kids with their buckets and spades. A prize for the winner. On the pier will be the Mermaid’s Tales and Captain Coconut and on the Saturday there will be an exhibition by the Royal Marines. There will also be a ‘Crab Fest’ at the Yacht Club on Saturday and you can sample the great food and drink outlets at the Ropery. Watch out for Jack Sparrow who will be amongst you on both days and could be clashing with the Pirates on the beach. Organisers say the harbour area will be congested so advise anyone arriving by car to park at the swimming
pool and take the short walk to the festival. The Festival Office will be at the Sub Aqua Club on Ropery Road so pick up your programme from there on the day. For more information visit seailfracombe.co.uk.

10 problem seagulls to be hawked out of town
A new initiative to manage problem gulls has arrived in Ilfracombe, after funding for a hawking programme was obtained by North Devon Council. The persistent nuisance of messy and sometimes aggressive gulls in Ilfracombe prompted the council to search for a solution. Hawking is a humane and environmentally friendly method of dealing with gulls and the litter problem they create, and there are hopes this will help reduce incidents of gull aggression in the town. It uses specially trained hawks to scare gulls out of an area and deter them from returning without harm. Efforts have been made by the council’s Harbourmaster, Georgina Carlo-Paat to obtain funding in previous years, to no avail. Following the
recent death of a local man, Dudley Jenkins, who was a proponent of the hawking approach, the search for funding started again in his honour. On this occasion, the government’s Welcome Back Fund was identified as being suitable for the purpose and funding was secured. Ilfracombe Harbourmaster, Georgina Carlo-Paat says: “Gulls have become a real problem in Ilfracombe, with the litter they create and aggressive behaviour towards people in the town. We don’t want to harm the gulls but we do want to reduce their numbers and the problems they bring to the town and its residents and visitors.We are really excited to work with North Devon Falconry and their trained hawks over the coming year, and
are especially pleased to be honouring the memory of Mr Jenkins, who was very keen to see a programme such as this introduced in the town.” The council says interested residents and visitors may be able to spot the hawks flying around the harbour and seafront over the coming weeks and months. Residents who experience a problem with gulls can report it on the council’s website. The Welcome Back Fund provides councils across England a share of £56 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support the safe return to high streets and help build back better from the pandemic. Ilfracombe’s hawking programme is supported by the Welcome Back Fund.

12 antisocial behaviour hot spot closed down A multiple occupancy property in Ilfracombe has been shut down by North Devon Council and Devon and Cornwall Police following concerns about antisocial behaviour, general disorder and poor housing conditions. Working in partnership with the Police, North Devon Council were successful in achieving a closure order from the magistrates’ court after securing evidence of anti-social behaviour and licensing breaches at the address. A three-month closure order was granted at Barnstaple’s Magistrates Court under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014. The order ends on August 30 and until this date, anyone who enters the property will be committing a criminal offence. North Devon Council leader David Worden said: “This type of intervention can only happen with the expertise and commitment of the Council and the Police. It is evidence of the strength of the partnership which works to promote community safety in North Devon. The pre-planning and collaboration with other statutory and voluntary sector organisations were critical in ensuring the welfare of the tenants.” Head of Health and Housing at North Devon
Council, Jeremy Mann, says: “A closure order is a very last resort and it is not a decision we take easily. We have made a number of attempts to address the issues at the Marlborough House previously but the problems have continued and now present a real danger to peoples’ lives. “We have been working hard to support those living at the premises and have found alternative accommodation for 10 out of the 11 residents, with the final resident being unwilling to work with us. We hope that this action will bring the anti-social behaviour associated with the property to an end once and for all.” Sector Inspector, Rich Preston, said:
“This necessary action should serve as a reminder to those who manage multi-occupancy premises and hotels that they have a responsibility and remain accountable for the behaviours of individuals on their premises, and that robust action will be taken in cases where those responsibilities are not met. This closure order is a positive step towards reducing anti-social behaviour and criminal activities in Ilfracombe and increasing the safety of residents, businesses and visitors to the area”. Cat of the month! Mungo Barnstaple and District Meet Mungo, a terribly unlucky puss who through no fault of his own has lost first one home and then another after just six months due to his owners sudden illness. At almost thirteen years of age we have known Mungo since 2016 and have grown to love him dearly. He is a great character and has been a wonderful companion to both the ladies who loved him in the past few years, so this lovely boy really now needs his forever home. He is used to a quiet life with no other pets or or young children. He is also used to coming and going when he wants through his cat flap but he is very much a home loving cat who likes nothing better than joining you on the sofa or sometimes in bed if he is allowed to. He is talkative and greets you with friendly body language, enjoying strokes and face rubs. Although a senior he is still very agile and will even love to play with the odd toy. All in all he is a great cat who really deserves another human companion to share his life with.
