Due to an increase in production demands, we are looking for ASSEMBLY & WIRING OPERATORS to join our team. Contracts will be for an initial 6 month period with a view to extending further and ultimately leading to permanent employment. We have several shift patterns available: Alternating shift pattern: Mon - Fri 06.00 - 14.00 and 14.00 - 22.00 (37.5 hrs/wk)* Standard day shift: Mon – Thurs 07.30 – 16.30 and Fri 07.30 - 12.00 (37.5 hrs/wk) Twilight shift: 17.00 – 22.00 either Mon – Thurs (20hrs/week) or Mon – Fri (25hrs/wk) The work is varied, of a light and clean nature where attention to detail and quality of workmanship are essential. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided. Hourly rate of pay: Initial 24 weeks £9.22, thereafter £9.40 (due for review 1st April) * Alternating shifts attract 25% shift premium – Initial 24 weeks £11.52, thereafter £11.76 We currently have plenty of overtime available at 1.5 x hourly rate and double time Sundays. A word from the editor Welcome to the April edition of your free, friendly community magazine showcasing the very best of Ilfracombe! As we go to print, headlines across the world focus on the terrible situation in Ukraine. A violent campaign of war is tearing lives apart and seperating families from their loved ones. At least 3 million people have fled their homes to escape conflict in Ukraine. Leaving behind jobs, belongings and loved ones, they now face an uncertain future. It’s estimated the conflict will affect around 18 million people overall. It’s hard for us to imagine ever being in such a desperate situation, but there are several things we can do to help. At the time of going to press, the UK Government has opened it’s Homes For Ukraine scheme in which anyone wishing to offer a home or spare bedroom to a Ukranian family can register their wish to do so by visiting homesforukraine. campaign.gov.uk. I have spoken to several people in Ilfracombe who have signed up and I know some local community groups have also expressed an interest in hosting families who have fled from Ukraine. Clearly this won’t be
suitable for everyone, so if you’d like to help in another way you can always make a donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee. No matter how small, any donation will make a difference. For example, just £30 could provide essential hygiene supplies for three people for one month. £50 could provide blankets for four families and £100 could provide emergency food for two families for

one month. I am more than aware that here in the UK we are going through our own problems at the moment with the overall cost of living shooting up for many of us. But if you are in the fortunate position to be able to offer help, I would urge you to do so. #StandWithUkraine

little shop of horrors returns...FINALLY!
After having to be cancelled twice, due to covid restrictions, the classic rock musical Little Shop Of Horrors will finally be performed at the Landmark this April. In the show, produced by local theatre company Small Pond, the meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” - after his co-worker crush. This
foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it - blood! Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination. Director Lee Baxendale said: “This is a great show and it is a privilege to direct, and work alongside, so many talented
performers. This promises to be something really special.” Small Pond was last seen at the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe with their hit production of Elf in December. The Wreck of Sarah Jane
Ilfracombe’s rocky coastline, huge tidal bore and the strong currents and winds of the Bristol Channel have been a hazard to ships for many centuries, and this photo from Ilfracombe Museum’s collection, taken in April 1924, shows the Sarah Jane wedged on rocks at Beacon Point, below Hillsborough. Her sails are ripped to shreds and soon she will be declared a total wreck. The Sarah Jane was a coal merchant’s ship and many of these travelled back and forth to South Wales from North Devon – there were six coal merchants listed in Ilfracombe in 1908. Vast quantities of Welsh coal were exported from the Penarth docks at this time – 4.6 million tonnes in 1913 alone.
The Sarah Jane was owned by the Devon Trading Company who had their yard at 4 Broad Street (later this site became RGB builder’s yard and now has been returned to a private house). She had been bound for Bideford carrying cement, but engine trouble forced her to divert to Ilfracombe harbour on the April 12, 1924. Unfortunately just at that moment an unexpected squall blew up and she was forced onto Beacon Rocks. The three crewmen were rescued but the 80 ton ketch stuck fast and could not be saved. Quite a bit of her was salvaged and sold on, but some said that her bags of hardened cement could be seen off Beacon Point at low tide for years.

how to spot the signs of county lines
Devon & Cornwall Police has urged residents to be on the lookout for signs of County Lines drug dealing. County Lines is a term used to describe gangs, groups or drug networks that supply drugs from urban to suburban or rural areas across the country (including market and coastal towns), using dedicated mobile phone lines or “deal lines”. Speaking about those involved, a police spokesman said: “They exploit children and vulnerable adults to move the drugs and money to and from the urban area, and to store the drugs in the local area. They will often use
intimidation, violence and weapons, including knives, corrosive substances and firearms. These young people may be victims of modern day slavery. They are exploited and made to work as drug runners, sometimes as ‘sex slaves’, and are often taken across county borders to places they don’t know. This activity occurs in North Devon just as it does elsewhere in the country. Do you know what your children are up to and where they are going? Who are those men always at that vulnerable person’s address?” If you are concerned about your child or about a vulnerable

Cat of the month! Olivia Barnstaple and District Olivia who is five and her daughter Fluff who is four have sadly come into our care as their owners could not find any rented accomodation to accept them. They need to be rehomed together as they have a strong bond, they are both tabby cats with mum being short haired and daughter long haired.
