April is upon us and by the time you read this, Easter will have been and gone. As I write, snow drifts several fet high have only just melted, and (hopefully) will be a distant memory by now. We tend to get som of our best weather around April and May and it’s fair to say they are probably my two favourite months of the year. The sun shines, putting a smile on people’s faces, and the influx of tourists isn’t quite here - meaning we have the place almost entirely to ourselves! Let’s make the most of it!

why not channel your inner undead and become a zombie for the day?

Ilfracombe Film Festival is looking for experts in the undead to train up would be zombies for a special theatrical event before a zombie double feature.

The event takes place between April 20-22 and is after zombie film enthusiasts. The legion of zombies will process to the Embassy Cinema on Ilfracombe High Street, having studied their skill beforehand at a special “zombie school” where candidates will be given a makeover and lessons in all things undead.

After terrorising the people of Ilfracombe the legion of undead will settle down with cinema goers to watch Shaun Of The Dead followed by The Plague Of The Zombies, a cult classic featuring the undead taking over the a Cornish village and tin mine.

Knight said: “We’ve been inundated with zombies, the post on Facebook went mental, almost 8,000 people saw the post.

We’ve had lots of professional zombies get in touch with pictures and video, some from as far away as Manchester. What we need are zombie experts, people who really understand the genre, who know how do the make-up and give people some lessons in zombie style movement and noise.”

Julia hopes the event will inspire more young people to go the cinema more and see it as a way of socialising. She said: “I hope people enjoy something a bit different in Ilfracombe.

“People go to the cinema as a group to share something. I hope people come together for the zombie experience, watch the films and then take part in other cultural events.”

This year’s festival has an ecological theme and you can also expect films highlighting the role of women in cinema. While the programme had not been released at the time of gong to print, organisers said: “If you’re a fan of surfing, swimming, Marilyn Monroe, David Bowie or black & white films, there’s something in it for you.”

the wheels are turning once again

The wheels have been set in motion again at Bicclescombe Park as restoration of the historic mill is now complete.

North Devon Council approved the release of £15,000 of funding for restoration of the mill in May last year and work began at the multi-award winning park in August.

The wheel buckets and boards have been replaced, the mill wheel repainted, debris cleared from the waterwheel pit and the gable wall repainted. Inside the building, the timber beams and floor joists have been replaced and a new window fitted to the gable over the mill wheel, along with new fencing and lighting.

The council’s executive member responsible for leisure and culture at North Devon Council, Councillor Dick Jones says: “We are very happy with the restoration work that has been done and were honoured to have Nick Pedlar turning the wheel on.

“Nick is the son of Glanville Pedlar who was instrumental in the original restoration of the mill in the 1960’s along with the Rotary Club of Ilfracombe.” Bicclescombe old mill house and tea rooms is staffed entirely by local volunteers so if you would like to donate some of your spare time to help out, please contact them on 07879 882877 to find out how.

Last month’s photographic theme was colour, but this month Combebird is focusing on black and white - specifically the grand, imposing structure (and very steep hill) of Oxford Grove.

As many people will tell you, this traditional Victorian street was once a haven to wealthy visitors and even boasted a large print press business.

Although most of the buildings have now been converted into flats, anyone who has ever been inside one of these dwellings will tell you just how big they are. One doesn’t find properties built to this scale nowadays, so we’re lucky to still have them!

Let’s hope that by April, wintry weather will be long behind us, and people will have no difficulty getting to the Pack o’ Cards in Combe Martin for our Open Night on Saturday 14th. Open Nights are about whoever comes along, with anyone and everyone having a chance to ‘sing, say or play’ whatever takes their fancy.

If you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Anyone is welcome to come along, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so – you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to listen. It’s held in the ‘museum’ of the pub, so there’s no need to compete with bar noise. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.

Then you can be up close and personal at April’s concert on Saturday 28th, when are guest artists are the dynamic duo of Saul Rose & James Delarre. These two make a quite exceptional duo, combining thrilling fiddle performance with some of the finest melodeon playing to be heard on the folk scene. Having started playing melodeon when he was just ten years old, Saul has been a professional musician on and off since his

Saul rose and james delarre late teens, and has played with some of the greats of the scene, most notably with Eliza Carthy and Nancy Kerr in the Kings of Calicutt, Waterson:Carthy, and most recently, Faustus. He also spent a year as ‘Songman’ in the West End production of ‘War Horse’. His voice is rich and warm, and beautifully suited to traditional English songs. Likewise, James has been playing violin from a young age, mostly self-taught, and turned professional very early on, working with Jim Moray, Mawkin:Causley and others, and later appeared in a number of television series and feature films.

The pair met and worked together at Sidmouth Folk Week some ten years ago and became firm friends, the music flowing whenever they get together. As a duo, they harness all the subtleties of traditional music while still producing an exciting and energetic display of musicianship. The joy with which they experience music together is hypnotic.
