Greetings fellow Issians and welcome to this, your September edition of The Ilfracombe Magazine. As Autumn fast approaches, we look back on what has been an incredible summer! The weather has been better than I can ever remember - includ ing the UK recording its hottest tempertaure ever at a stonking 40 degrees! Locally, it seemed as if the town was also busier than ever, something I hope was replicated in the takings of all our fantastic local shops, pubs, restaurants and businesses. All-in-all, a super summer season - but I must admit, I love September more than any other time of the year. The weather is usually great, kids return to school, visi tors head home, the town is still bustling and there’s plenty of opportunities for a nice quiet paddle at Hele. It’s one of the few times during the year in which all these elements align and we get the town entirely to ourselves to enjoy - and it always reminds me how lucky we are to call this place home.

An Ilfracombe park has once again scooped the Green Flag Award - the international quality mark for parks and green spaces. After two years that have seen parks and green spaces play a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely, the news that Bicclecombe Park has achieved the Green Flag Award again is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that make the green space a great space that everyone can enjoy. 2022 marks the 18th consecu tive year that Bicclescombe Park has achieved the prominent status. The park is owned and managed by North Devon Council, with the help of active community groups including the Bicclescombe Park User Group. North Devon Coun cil Leader, Councillor David Worden, said: “I am very proud of our Parks team and local community groups who have worked so hard over the years to maintain these green spaces for the benefit of our community. To achieve the Green Flag status again is a testament to everyone’s hard work and dedication. Well done to everyone, keep up the good Greenwork.”FlagAward Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in mak ing Bicclecombe Park worthy of a Green Flag Award. “It is a vital green space for the community in North Devon. Reality TV star Laura Tott has tied the knot with her partner in Ilfracombe in a stunning ceremony. Laura, who appeared on the Chan nel 4 show First Dates, said her vows last month at the Tunnels Beach wedding venue. In images shared on Instagram, the bride looked gorgeous in a lace bridal gown, complete with train and veil. Her hair is up in an elegant style threaded with pearls. The photos showed Laura posing with friends and family, looking absolutely ecstatic on her big day. The paramedic first came to public atten tion when she appeared as a waitress on First Dates.
Now, she’s living a happy ever after with her new husband, whose identity is kept private. Laura was seen dancing with her guests as she admired the rolling coastal views. Laura announced her romantic engagement in June last year, writing: “Well I better get planning that hen do. Always keep my relationship off social media and I love that it’s just for me, but wanted to share this with you all cos I’m absolutely over the moon. Hope you’re all enjoying the sunshine.”

The motion stated: “It is shocking and extremely worrying for many local residents in North Devon on limited incomes, that Ofgem announced that the energy price cap could rise to £2,800 in October 2022. Earlier this year on 1 April 2022, Ofgem increased the energy price cap by 54 per cent. Over the com ing summer months, North Devon residents who in the main are already financially challenged, face the aver age standard tariff energy bill increasing by £693 per year. The average pre-pay meter energy bill increasing by £708 per year (Ofgem, 2022). On 6 April 2022, the Government increased National Insurance by 1.25 percentage points, which is another extra demand on North Devon families. The cost of petrol and diesel has hit an all-time high with it costing over £100 to fill up an average car. In rural North Devon where there is little or no public transport this is causing real hardship and in addition is putting enormous pressure on our Council’s waste and recycling budget.” The council’s leader, David Worden, agreed to write to the Chan cellor of the Exchequer to: * Welcome the imposition of the ‘Windfall Tax’ on the super profits of oil and gas companies and question whether this has gone far *enough.Immediately reduce the standard rate of VAT from 20% to 17.5% for at least one year, saving the aver age family £600. * Introduce a fuel rebate scheme for rural areas like North Devon with, for exam ple, extending the discount scheme for rural garages which has been successful at Lynton (Barbrook).
