I can’t believe Christmas is nearly upon us! As I type this (still comfortably nestled in October), some shops are already displaying their festive wares with lights twinkling and Santa poking his head out from the shelves (no Christmas songs yet though, that would just be crazy). This brings me to one of my favourite events of the year - Combe Christmas! There’s something for everyone at this fantastic weekend, as you’ll see from our run down on P10. I’m sure I’ll see you there with a mulled wine in hand!

The biggest event in Ilfracombe’s winter calendar takes place this month - the ever festive Combe Christmas wekend. As well as the lighting of the lights, which draws thousands of locals and visitors to the town, the event extends over the weekend with all manner of Yuletide cheer on offer. And this year, the team behind the event are trying something slightly different. The Lighting of the Lights will be on Friday 29th November. On the Saturday there will be a Christmas Craft Fair featuring quality Christmas goods alongside delicious food being served all day by a number of great catering stalls. As always, there
will be some talented local musicians to keep you entertained - and this year, the team are extending the entertainment into the evening, hosting some of the area’s best bands to get the Christmas Party spirit started. The Sunday will be the Combe Christmas Community Day where organisers bring together as many of our fantastic community groups as possible, plus there will be lots for the kiddywinks to do. There will also be live music from talented local youngsters and the food stalls and Santa will also be there for their second day of fun. It wouldn’t be the Combe Christmas Weekend without the

focus on: Startrek challenge 2020
Did you know there’s an event organised right here in Ilfracombe that has been going for 26 years and has raised almost £1 million for charity? That event is the Rotary Startrek - a night walk competition on Exmoor. Teams use basic orienteering skills to navigate across the moor in the dark using only a compass and map, answering questions on the way. Winners are judged on both time taken and clues answered correctly. The event is usually held on the first weekend in March, so be ready for anything weather wise! Teams of 4 to 6 will be set off at
intervals from 6pm and the event concludes when all teams are safely back. In the morning when you finish, the freshly cooked refreshments with piping hot tea or coffee will taste better than any food ever has! You and your team can choose to walk either the Full Trek, approximately 16 miles or the eight-mile Half Trek. The full course has two loops; each loop starts and finishes at base camp. At the half way point you will be offered refreshments including hot and cold food to ensure you are ready for the next stage. Base camp loca-
tion is a closely guarded secret until the day. The course is marshalled with regular check points. You will have the support on the night of the Ilfracombe Rotary Clubs, St John’s Ambulance and Raynet assisted search and rescue. Everything is done to ensure your total safety. In its 26 year history the event has raised more than £900,000 for Childrens Hospice South West and North Devon Hospice. The next event takes place on Saturday, March 7th, 2020. Christmas is nearly upon us (mental) but the sparkling illuminations aren’t the only things that light up the town at this time of year. Granted, now the clocks have changed we get less daylight than perhaps we might like, but the light we do get is simply stunning - as illustrated in this picture above. It’s the reason (well, one of the reasons) so many artists flock to the South West. Ask any painter or sculptor with a residency in St Ives, Falmouth or right here in ‘Combe and they’ll tell you there’s something special about the clarity of light in these neck of the woods. Whether it’s the lack of pollution or unique micro climate, it dosn’t really matter - as long as you enjoy it!

And if you’ve never ‘had a go’ before, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Everyone is encouraged, but never pushed into doing so. Any genre of performance is welcome, as long as it doesn’t require a P.A. Anyone is welcome to come along, whether or not they ‘sing, say or play’, and if you’re a musician and don’t want to play solo, there may be a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. It’s held in the ‘museum’ of the pub, so there’s no need to compete with bar noise. The evening starts at about 8 p.m. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to Shammick Acoustic’s expenses. And on Saturday 23rd, Shammick Acoustic puts on a wide range of acoustic music, including blues when something worth booking comes along – and Rag Mama Rag is certainly that, so they’re back again! Formed in 1991, this duo have built up a reputation as one of Europe’s finest country blues acts, making use of an interesting and interesting array of instruments from Dobro and ukulele to washboard and harmonica to accompany classic

vocal renditions. Touring non-stop, Ashley and Deborah Dow play at many major festivals throughout Europe and beyond, with their exceptionally full and hard-driving rhythmic sound which gets audiences’ feet tapping or even stomping! Their repertoire is ‘20s and ‘30s blues based, but encompassing Mississippi Delta, East Coast ragtime, and white country tunes, as well as their own original compositions. Presenting a huge range of material from slower melodies to fast-paced rocking blues, with superb fingerpicking thrown in for good measure, this unassuming but multi-talented couple won’t leave anyone disappointed! A number of local performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as
enjoying being part of the audience. Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin from 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7.30. Cat of the month! Sky Meet Sky, a georgeous sleek long haired girl who has been a wonderful companion to her elderly owner until sadly she developed an allergy and had to give her up. Used to a quiet life with no other pets, Sky would like a similar home but may well be able to live with older children as she is a friendly puss who likes to be groomed, have a cuddle and a lap to sit on. Although estimated at around ten years old she doesn't always act it, and still likes to play with a variety of toys. She is a bit of a home lover but does like access to a garden. Altogether, Sky would be a lovely addition to many a household.
