Our favourite event in the packed Ilfracombe diary is nearly upon us - the Round Table Birdman Competition. I should register my interest early on and declare that I’m one of the people who help organise this event - but even before I got involved, it was still by far my favourite event in the town. Nothing quite matches the sheer lunacy and spectacle of those magnificent men in their flying (or falling) machines and the inevitable splash as they hit the water. £2.2M funding for dangerous road

The Department for Transport has announced £2.2 million worth of funding for the A3123 near Ilfracombe.

The rural route, which links the A361 North Devon Link Road to Woolacombe and Ilfracombe, suffer from higher average speeds, sub-standard alignment and a lack of physical segregation between vehicles, according to Devon County Council. Between 2012 and 2016, there were 27 collisions on the route (including Mullacott Cross roundabout), of which three resulted in fatal or serious injuries (KSIs). The funding has been allocated to help enable major junction improvements – particularly at two collision cluster sites at Hore Down Gate and Lynton Cross. Devon County Council also aims to achieve enhanced and more consistent signing and lining at junctions along the entire route.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “Improving the safety of our highways for all road users is a priority for Devon County Council. This funding will support that priority by delivering a series of risk reducing measures to target the most severe collisions.”

Councillor Andrea Davis, County Councillor for Combe Martin Rural, said: “Increasing the safety and reducing the number of road casualties on the A3123 has been one of my pledges to the local community. The Safer Roads Fund will reduce the risk of collision along the A3123 and the closure of the northern Lynton Cross arm will tackle this local collision hot spot. The A3123 is a key regional route and the opportunity to make these safety improvements

The scheme is expected to save 16 deaths on the A3123. It’s hoped the work would be finished by 2021.

Ilfracombe park gets cash injection

A play park in Ilfracombe is to get £45,000 worth of new equipment thanks to contributions made to the community by local developers.

At a meeting of the North Devon Council Executive Committee on Monday 4 June, councillors agreed to approve and release £162,004 Section 106 public funds to enhance public open spaces.

The money will be spread across five different projects in various areas across North Devon. In Ilfracombe, the old equipment in the Princess Avenue play area will be removed and replaced with new, inclusive play equipment and a new safety surface.

It will be paid for by more than £45,000 from Section 106 contributions from the Shields development. Section 106 is money paid to the council by developers as part of the planning conditions of planning applications. The money

As well as the Ilfracombe play park, North Devon Homes will receive £63,312 towards the cost of new play equipment at Gorwell play area in Barnstaple. Fremington Parish Council will receive £12,300 towards the cost of replacing Beechfield Centre in Fremington with a purpose built community building and parish council offices. The project already has planning approval and has secured a loan from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Croyde Parish Council will receive £9,015 towards the cost of developing a play area with a range of play equipment based around a sea theme,

whil Pilton Park play area in Barnstaple will benefit from more than £32,000 worth of Section 106 contributions from the Old Glove Factory development. Old equipment will be removed and replaced with new, play equipment and safety surfacing.

North Devon Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Brian Moores, said: “I’m pleased to see this funding help so many projects which will benefit local communities across the district. S106 contributions, made as part of major planning applications, allow the council to give something back to the community and help projects to receive funding that can be vital to provide much needed facilities.”

It’s that time of year again when brave and foolhardy folk hurl themselves off Ilfracombe Pier with all manner of weird and wonderful flying machines in the hope of being crowned the winner of Ilfracombe’s famous Birdman competition. This year’s event, which takes place on Saturday, 11th August, is being billed by organisers Ilfracombe Round Table as the biggest yet - and there’s even a £500 prize up for grabs for ambitious jumpers. As is expected at Birdman, there’ll be the usual mix of

would-be aviators and fancy dressed folk leaping into the icy waters while the crowds roar and cheer at the spectacle. As well as the jump and live music throughout the day, there will alo be a vast array of stall, food outlets, beer tents, rides and children’s entertainment. Ilfracombe Round Table are appealing for people who want to jumpt to sign up as soon as possible to secure their place. The view with COMBEBIRD

I’m a big fan of the director Wes Anderson, he of the Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr Fox and The Royal Tenenbaums fame. Recently I saw an amazing video on Facebook which showed numerous scenes from his films - each a beautiful study in photography - and below it was the colour pallete that had been used in each scene. It was such a fascinating way to see his work portrayed and explained, but seeing the pallette of colours mirrored so vividly in the frame just made it all make sense.

It was this video which sprang to mind when I laid on eyes on this Combebird image - the vibrant reds and blues set next to the subtle pastel shades - well, it just makes sense!

Mostly traditional, mostly unaccompanied songs from this couple based in Gloucestershire, but with a deep interest in the songs of Devon and Cornwall gained through the song collecting of Sabine BaringGould, the polymath squarson of Lew Trenchard on Dartmoor. However, Open Nights are mainly about whoever comes along, with anyone and everyone having a chance to ‘sing, say or play’ whatever takes their fancy. If you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Anyone is welcome to come along, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so – you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to join in with choruses and/or just listen. It’s held in the ‘museum’ of the pub, so there’s no need to compete with bar noise. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.

July’s concert on Saturday 28th is a real treat for anyone who appreciates superb musicianship. How can one man be a virtuoso musician on two

such different instruments?

Tim Edey is – on both guitar and melodeon he is quite exceptional. Originally from Kent but of Irish descent, Tim honed his style of playing by shutting himself away in his bedroom, listening to his musical heroes, and practising until he could make the same sounds as they did – and then exceeded them all! He has toured the world and recorded with most of the major names in Celtic/contemporary roots music, including The Chieftains, Christy Moore, Sharon Shannon, Natalie MacMaster, Stockton’s Wing, Dougie MacLean and Mary Black, to name just a few! He’s now a name on the world stage in his own right, and is rated by

many to be one of the world’s finest ever melodeon and guitar players, with a personality to match. An evening with Tim is a stunning mix of world music-inspired instrumental brilliance and passion with a strong Celtic theme, plus chorus songs for an audience to partake in, and above all, a highly entertaining night of musical genius. A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience.
