Council scraps anpr parking cameras
Ilfracombe Town Council has announced the removal of the ANPR parking cameras in Ropery Road Car Park. Following feedback from Ilfracombe residents and visitors to the town regarding issues with the ANPR camera system, the council agreed on the removal of the camera system and return to a pay and display system. The new system is now in place with a new tariff and with the existing Ringo and cash payments. Users will need to pay when they first park and display their ticket as per terms and condi-
tions of parking. During the coming months we are also upgrading the ticket machines to provide an option to pay by credit card which will increase usability for all our car park users. The Mayor, Councillor Val Gates said: “North Devon Council will now provide our car park monitoring. We are pleased to have reverted to a traditional pay and display system with easier ways to pay. The carpark will now be monitored by parking wardens rather than cameras! It has taken a while to exit from the previous contract but

Ilfracombe Round Table has raised more than ÂŁ2,500 by holding a Top Gear style challenge featuring small but mighty vehicles. The inaugural Micro Car Challenge saw local Round
Table members travel from London to Land’s End in cars ranging from a classic Indian TukTuk to a modern electric-powered Renault Twizy. Competitors endured breakdowns, bad traffic and
biblical weather to complete the whacky fundraiser. All the money raised will be split between Prostate Cancer UK and local worthy causes chosen by Round Table.

As the saying goes, this one is old but gold! This snowy scene is actually from February 2018 when the town was literally coated in a thick blanket of the white stuff. I know it’s not exactly current, but at this festive time of year I’m of the opinion that we all deserve a bit of a winter wonderland - and let’s face it, it’s the closest we are going to get to a white Christmas! I know I drone on about it every year, but winter and particularly the festive period, are by far my favourite time. Friends, family, food, roaring log fires, chilly walks on the beach, mulled wine, Christmas markets, bobble hats, festive films - what’s not to like? So here’s to your Christmas - may it bring you everything you wish for!

On Saturday 14th December, we will be holding a Traditional Carols workshop during the afternoon, which will explore some of the lesserknown carols and settings of carols from the heyday of local composition, and still maintained, mainly in pubs, around England. The workshop will be led by the group Narthen, who are the guest artists at the evening concert, with their seasonal show Hark! Hark! Narthen may be a name new to many – but not for long, I suspect. They are a quartet of fine singers: Barry Coope and Lester Simpsoin from the famed but now defunct Coope, Boyes & Simpson, with Jo Freya of Blowzabella and Moirai, Fi Fraser of PolkaWorks and Old Swan Band, who got together to concentrate on a winter shows, but then took it further so that they could perform throughout the year. Since then, Lester has decided to give up the touring in favour of local choral work, so Narthen have been joined by our own Devon nightingale Jim Causley, six times a BBC Folk Awards nominee. So the pedigree is there for all the members of the band, but their Christmas show is not just a bunch of folk with good voices belting out traditional carols. It’s a welcoming hotchpotch of stories, poetry and jokes threaded through with

carolling and wassailing, both a capella and accompanied by a proper bagful of instruments, blown, plucked, bowed and struck. The show is rich in Variety tradition – there are various nods to Music Hall – and steeped in folk’s past and present. The way the show veers effortlessly between solemnity and silliness makes it a wonderful, and wonderfully warm, winter night out. A number of performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience – this time, Malcolm & Olive Woods from Essex, and Dick Stephens from Somerset. And as it’s our Christmas gettogether, there will be seasonal refreshments during the interval. Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’

A collection is taken to raise funds for the Friends of St. Peter’s, a charity which helps with the upkeep of the fabric of the parish church.
