As a child, the sensation of walking into a toy shop can only be matched by that of walking into a candy store.

The walls are lined with everything the heart desires and more, all waiting to be played with or eaten when your parents aren’t looking.

Smith’s Market in Hutchinson gives a similar experience to not only children, but people of all ages.

“Smith’s Market is an old fashioned market that has been a downtown Hutchinson landmark since 1933,” said Chris Barnes, co-owner of the market.

“What started out as just a fruit and vegetable market in 1933 has tripled in size since then and now offers over 300 varieties of candies, nuts, and trail mixes, as well as over 100 varieties of glass bottled sodas, specialty foods, and Kansas foods.”

The store, located at 211 South Main Street, allows for customers to step back in time and take a break from the chaos of the outside world.

“I think the coolest thing about the market is watching people when they first walk in the front doors and take it

all in,” Barnes said. “It’s like no other store I’ve ever seen. It makes this busy life slow down just a bit, allows us to relax, and take a break from the day all while perusing for fabulous foods and gifts.”

Smith’s Market was founded in 1933 and was bought by Barnes’s father from the Smith family in 1957. The store was then bought by Barnes and

his wife Gail in 2005.

“Since then, we have returned the front facade to its original look, restored the wood floors and tin ceilings, and expanded the store,” Barnes said.

I was little with my mom and sisters,” said Hutchinson Community College sophomore Jordan Galliher. “I think it’s a really cool place, because they have a lot of unique products that you can’t really find anywhere else in Hutch.”

While Smith’s Market is a unique store that brings in people from all over the region, it is still a local store that is trying to survive a pandemic.

“No small business can survive without the support of fantastic customers,” Barnes said.

This diamond-in-the-rough is open every Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and gives customers a safe space to walk around and feel like they can let out their inner child.

No matter what you are looking for they have something to offer.

When asked about what people should buy at the market, Barnes said, “That’s a tough one. I’d say that our bulk Java John’s coffee is one of my favorites. It’s roasted weekly in McPherson just for us. If they are not a coffee fan, they should try our amazing fresh fudge that we make weekly in the store, or whatever fresh produce item we are featuring that week.”

We support WSU students’ fight for transparency Our view Last Friday, the Kansas Board of Regents announced the immediate resignation of Wichita State University President Jay Golden. Even though universities are supposed to be public institutions, Golden was hired less than a year ago during a closed-door process and KBOR, which governs the state’s colleges and universities, has not released further details about his resignation.

The abrupt announcement shocked many students who were supportive of his efforts to ironically - promote shared governance, trust and transparency.

During his short tenure, Golden faced unexpected challenges, of which he handled with grace and public input.

When WSU Tech announced in June that Ivanka Trump would give a virtual commencement speech, hundreds of students signed an open letter to express their concerns about its timing - during nationwide protests against systemic racism.

WSU Tech ultimately listened to them and removed her from the keynote slot, moving it to be optional. The decision was criticized

by Koch Industries and Ivanka herself.

Some large donors threatened to pull funding to the school if Golden did not reverse the decision.

This only solidified support for Golden.

Students rallied on campus and 10,000 of them signed a petition in defense of him.

Although he was not perfect, we stand with WSU students and faculty in their push for transparency about Golden’s resignation and community involvement in the hiring of his successor.

Breaking your limits isn’t worth breaking down I am a people pleaser.

I hate the thought of letting someone down or disappointing those around me.

I can’t stand the idea of telling someone no when they ask for my help.

I will put others’ needs above my own.

That’s just who I am and always have been.

You’re probably thinking ‘That’s not a bad thing.’ I should want to help other people.

Where do you draw the line?

I have been struggling with that myself and continue to work on it every day.

I am currently in my first semester of the ADN program at Hutchinson Community College.

At the same time, I’m also enrolled in classes with the University of Kansas School of Nursing through their Community College Partnership program to get my Bachelor’s degree.

I have two online classes through KU each semester on top of my full class load at HutchCC. Money certainly doesn’t grow on trees, so I also work parttime as a pharmacy technician.

To say I’m busy would be an understatement.

My classes with HutchCC started a few weeks before my KU courses so I had some time to get myself into a routine with class, studying, and work.

I had a complete breakdown within the first week and nearly quit the program with KU because I was so overwhelmed.

I was working three days a week, maybe an extra day or two if they needed to call someone in.

Being a people pleaser I couldn’t bring myself to tell them ‘no.’

I was struggling.

I didn’t want to burden my family with my stress, but at this point, I didn’t have a choice.

They sat with me and put everything into perspective, and I finally realized the need to set some boundaries for myself.

At the end of every week, I was drained and had no time in between to ground myself to prepare for the next one.

I spoke with my work; and, being the incredible people they are, they cut my hours down to two days a week. I was scared they would be mad or upset for

making them short-staffed, but that wasn’t the case.

They knew I had an intense course load and were there to help me, no questions asked.

I struggled with the thought of putting my foot down to do what was best for me regardless of how it affected others involved.

To finish classwork or give me time to recharge, I had to turn down friends who wanted to hang out and coworkers who needed someone to cover their shifts.

I’m sure they were upset about it at the time, but I had to do what was best for me.

It’s an incredibly difficult lesson to learn, and it’s still a work in progress, but it’s so important for your mental health.

That conversation with my manager felt like a punch to the gut asking her to cut my hours down, but the stress lifted off my shoulders since then is unmatched.

Being a college student is tough.

You have to put yourself first and do what you need to do to be successful.

Learn to set those limits, learn to tell people no.

Always have your best interest at heart, those around you will understand.

‘Ultra Mono’: an ultra mediocre album

Punk band IDLES’ latest realease packs a punch, but doesn’t reach its potential

After releasing “Joy as an Act of Resistance” in 2018, the Bristol band IDLES found themselves at the top of the recent post-punk revival.

With a focus on unity and selflove, that album brought a different style of lyrical content to the genre compared to their contemporaries. Coming into their next album, IDLES wanted to make their best sounding album yet, signing on hiphop producer Kenny Beats to produce “Ultra Mono.” While they do succeed in making a stellar-sounding album, the focus on production leads to some lesser quality elsewhere on the album.

Starting with the positives, the production on the entire album is top-notch. Beats managed to make every drum hit punchy and crystal clear, every bassline thick and heavy, and all guitar riffs noisy without turning to complete mush.

I did not notice a single instance where the sound quality dipped,

which can be a challenge, considering how hectic some of the tracks on “Ultra Mono” get sometimes.

Songs like “War,” “Grounds,” “Model Village” and “Reigns” show the production quality best. “War” opens the album with fervent drums leading a fast-paced bassline to the first verse, managing to bridge a nice combination of noisy energy and clear audio from every instrument and vocal delivery. “Grounds” features more electronic production throughout the song, but brings in more noise and distortion on the guitars, especially as the song reaches its climax.

“Model Village” sounds relatively average production-wise until you consider the subtle build of each instrument in the background as each verse creeps to the chorus, getting more and more distorted along the way. Finally, “Reigns” starts with heavy bass and a simplistic drumline as waves of murderous TV static threaten to break through your headphones. Each song features an interesting move with its production, but I wish the same could be said about the lyrical content of each track.

IDLES has shown they can write powerful lyrics and one-liners from time to time. However, I feel like the attempts featured on “Ultra Mono” are even weaker than they were on their last two albums.

The biggest issue I have is how surface-level the observations are with heavy topics. For example, on “Grounds”, IDLES attempts to shed light on racism within Britain and the United States with the line “So I raise my pink fist and say black is beautiful,” bringing nothing to the conversation outside of a blanket statement saying “I support Black Lives Matter.” This happens again on “Ne Touche Pas Moi” with the chorus featuring three shouts of “Consent! Consent! Consent!”

Having such aggressive attempts at sharing universally accepted ideas makes it feel like the band thinks what they’re saying hits harder than it does.

The most frustrating part of these surface-level phrases is that IDLES has written about both of these issues with greater prowess on their earlier albums. The song “Mother” from 2016’s “Brutalism” speaks about sexual violence being larger than the cruel acts people mentally associate with the term, and spans

into a systemic issue that cannot be avoided.

“Danny Nedelko” from 2018’s “Joy as an Act of Resistance” explains simply how xenophobia can lead to rises in fascism. These are the same topics touched on in “Grounds” and “Ne Touche Pas Moi,” but with real substance attached to them.

However, these issues do not take away from my overall enjoyment of the album. The entire album hits hard and doesn’t let up, leading to an enjoyable post-punk experience.

Despite missing its potential, “Ultra Mono” still packs a punch.

Brighter Enforcement

With the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic, BrightHouse, a non-profit domestic abuse and sexual-assault help center, has seen more and more fall victim in their domestic relationships.

The forced quarantines and isolating society has made it easier for abusers to get away with violent acts, as their partners are home with them far more often.

For example, strangulations are not as easy to see as some may think, and often, the victim can hide the evidence left from the attack if they do not wish to leave the relationship. In the case of strangulation, it does not take much pressure to cut off the oxygen flow to the brain which would then cause the victim to be rendered unconscious. This can result in serious injuries such as brain damage.

To fight this spike in domestic violence, BrightHouse is teaming up with the Hutchinson Police Department to help better educate cops on identifying the signs of strangulations and to know how to help those who have been domestically abused.

“Working with the police makes so much sense,” said Donna Davis, Executive Director. “We both want the same thing, to see the abusers be held accountable for their actions. We love working with our officers.”

Every Monday for six weeks, Sept. 28 being the first, BrightHouse is holding sessions that are 90 minutes long to train with Hutchinson’s law enforcement officers.

Davis said some of the key points that BrightHouse is trying to make during these sessions, “The victim might talk as if they are lying, they may laugh, they may not make eye contact, the victim’s brain gets flooded with chemicals that are so harsh it is difficult to answer interview questions from officers due to not being able to remember what happened. The victim’s brain is not straight due to oxygen lost. It is strangulated.”

BrightHouse is constantly making efforts to assist those put in these dangerous situations.

Hutchinson Community College has welcomed BrightHouse agents to talk in classes through the years to help educate students on what domestic violence entails and to target red flags in relationships.

History buffs discuss Trump’s ‘1776 Commission’

President Trump recently stated that he was going to work toward what is referred to as the “1776 Commission”, which is “pro-American curriculum that celebrates the truth about our nation’s great history,” vs. what is currently being taught.

Trump said the current curriculum, and the “1619 Project” built by The New York Times, sets children up to hate their country and gives them a left-leaning viewpoint to the US. “The left has warped, distorted, and defiled the American story with deceptions, falsehoods, and lies. There is no better example than the New York Times’ totally discredited ‘1619 Project’. This project rewrites American history to teach our children that we were founded on the principle of oppression, not freedom,” Trump said.

Buhler High School and Hutchinson Community College history teacher Aaron Deitchler has his views on what the president said and how he teaches U.S. history.

“I believe we are at a crossroads in not just how history is taught in school, but in our country today. Left or right, liberal or conservative, democrat or republican, the United States has a history. It may not all be pretty and it certainly is one filled with skeletons.” Deitchler said. “It would be irresponsible for history teachers to pick and choose what information their students receive. My job as a teacher is not to place my agenda on my students. My job, as a teacher of American history, is to give students the facts about our history, as it happened - good or bad and give them the tools to make their own decisions.”

Deitchler also said, “there has been controversy in the curriculum of certain classes AP U.S. History, for instance - about it being ‘too negative’ in regards to our past. History needs to be taught without an agenda. I believe our history needs to be celebrated, but we also need to teach students that our country tied itself to human bondage to help it succeed.”

HutchCC freshman Jakob Dilbeck, a student studying secondary history education, spoke of his worries if the “1776 Commission” is implemented.

“I feel as though we should be adding history to the books that doesn’t highlight these extreme nationalistic ideals, but highlights selfless heroes,” Dilbeck said. “There is a lot of unspoken history that should be necessary to learn, whereas removing credible material from history books seems as if someone is controlling our minds to act as if some history is more important than other history. That is so not true.”

Both Deitchler and Dilbeck state that the “anti-American” ways being taught as Trump stated, were not such a prevalent issue, and instead offer a learning point for moving forward so the nation doesn’t repeat past mistakes.

“History allows us to learn from our past, so how are we to continue to grow as a nation if we’re going to pretend like some of our mistakes never happened?” Dilbeck said.

Deitchler said learning from past mistakes is important for any nation’s growth.

“Do I think the way we teach history in public school is anti-American? I wouldn’t think so, but I haven’t been in a lot of other classrooms,” Deitchler said. “We also run the risk of spreading dangerous misinformation if we erase the bad from our history.

That would be one slippery slope. A person can still love this country while acknowledging that the United States has done wrong in it’s past. It is important to learn from our history, or we will be doomed to repeat it.”

A variety of fresh baked good, plus breat for making toast, is set out for breakfast inside Parker Student Union’s cafeteria.

HutchCC students help themselves to breakfast on Thursday at Parker Student Union.

While construction carries on inside and outside Parker Student Union, the cafeteria re-opened Thursday morning.

Students and others who wanted to eat on campus since the school year began had to walk over to the Sports Arena. For dorm students, that was three jaunts to the arena a day, more than double the normal walk from the dorms to the union.

Thursday, HutchCC alumnus and former college president Ed Berger, who is now a Kansas state senator, was the first in line and first to be served. Berger was a student when the previous cafeteria was finished, and was the third student in line to be served then.

Hot meals cafeteria style will continue to be served by workers.

Thursday’s breakfast included eggs, bacon, pancakes and more. There was also a wide variety of pastries and other baked good, plus fresh fruit and cereal.

Seating is updated and modern, including tables where plugging in electronics is possible.

A wide variety of fresh pastries donuts and other baked goods will be available daily for diners inside the new cafeteria.

HutchCC alumnus and former college president Ed Berger is the first to be served a meal at the new cafeteria.

Students are being served breakfast at the union cafeteria reopening.

I thought both kids teachers did an excellent job of adjusting on the fly and helping the kids finish the school year,” Rose said. “We did, however, struggle with being stuck at home all the time. Normally, we are so busy that we are never home, so that was the biggest adjustment for us.”

In every negative situation, positives can be found. Sometimes you have to

look really, really hard - but they’re there.

“We learned how to slow down and take the time to do things we don’t get to do very much - like kayaking, bike riding, and taking our dog on walks together. Our dog got more walks in March, April and May than he probably had in his lifetime,” Rose said.

Improvising has been a large part of 2020, especially for coaches who have young children. Going back to remote learning would not be ideal, but it is something that both Rose and Schmidt are prepared to handle.

HutchCC cancels Spring Break, moves forward graduation

Spring Break is the space of time in the last week of March that gives students the opportunity to relax from the everyday flow of school when approaching graduation season.

Many people spend their breaks on beaches, mountains, or in bed staying up until 3 a.m. and sleeping in until noon.

The 2021 spring break will look to be a little bit different at Hutchinson Community

College, because the school will not have the usual break.

At the Sept. 10 Board of Trustees meeting, the board unanimously voted to cancel spring break, due to COVID-19 concerns.

As such, graduation has been moved up a week to Friday, April 30. Final examinations for in-person classes will be the last week of April.

That leaves some students, such as Elisa Workman, a Buhler High School senior who splits her time between

on-campus classes and high school classes, happy for this decision.

“I’m not upset about it, due to the risk of having a spring break in the first place,” Workman said. “By moving graduation forward, it doesn’t lengthen the school year, and gives students the chance to be over earlier. My mom is going through chemo, and I would be uncomfortable knowing that everyone was given the opportunity to travel and party. It’s understandable that the loss of

a spring break is annoying, but it’s what is needed.”

Workman will be taking the opportunity of a longer summer to spend time with family.

Payton McAllister, a Hutchinson freshman, agrees with Workman.

“I think that it’s a good thing to not have the Spring Break, mostly because it gets us out of school quicker and we can have a longer summer,” Workman said.

Usually, a summer would range for about two months,

but with a quicker graduation, the students at HutchCC will be receiving close to a three-and-ahalf months summer vacation.

But some students like Cooper Self, a Hutchinson sophomore, was upset when hearing the news of no Spring Break.

“To me, I’m a little disappointed,” Self said. “Last year, my girlfriend and I went to Gulf Shores, Alabama with some friends, and that was a bunch of fun. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to do something like that again this year.”

Overcoming these stressors is part of the new routine. Rather than handing a paper in to your teacher may not be so simple anymore.

“I just try to take one day at a time.

When everything shut down in March, the coaches did not have much coaching to focus on. Sizable adjustments had to be made.

“All five kids in school were trying

to do it at the same time under the same roof. It was hard to keep them on task and organized because of all the distractions. My wife was the saint that kept everyone organized and on task. I loved the fact that I got to spend a lot of time with Augie that I wouldn’t have otherwise,” Schmidt said.

Other adjustments, unrelated to school, were made in the Rose household.

From starting his soccer career playing in the academy soccer system in Brazil, to moving to the United States to play college soccer in 2014, and now working as the assistant coach for the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team, it’s fair to say that Gonzalo Carranza has had quite the journey.

Growing up in Brazil, soccer had a huge impact on Carranza during his childhood, and that impact helped him when he moved to the U.S. “Like most South American kids, it was surrounded by soccer,” Carranza said. “From playing in the streets with friends, to trying to pursue a professional career. I was lucky enough to have the correct guidance, where my education was still important. With that, I made the move to the U.S. to play college soccer. The change was

smooth because I understood from the get go how good of an opportunity it was.”

While it may have been a smooth transition from Brazil to the U.S., the change from player to coach was a little more difficult for Carranza.

However, by getting his foot into the door early by coaching youth soccer, it opened him up to many opportunities.

“It was challenging at times, but all for the good of my Carranza long-term development as a coach,” Carranza said.

“With time, bigger opportunities presented themselves, and that’s when it started getting serious.

I went from coaching kids that were just starting to give their first touches on the ball, to players sometimes older than myself that had national and international appearances for their countries.

“I think it all helped mold the coach I am nowadays, and also makes me realize there is always more to learn and grow.”

Carranza is no stranger to coaching college soccer, as this is his third college coaching gig.

In 2016, he coached men’s and women’s soccer at his junior-college alma mater Anoka Ramsey CC, then coached men’s soccer at Bethel College in 2019, before joining HutchCC in 2020.

At HutchCC he will join forces with longtime Blue Dragon coach Sammy Lane, who Carranza sees as a great advisor to him. Both also coach youth club soccer with FC Wichita.

“I consider Coach Lane a mentor on and off the field,” Carranza said. “I learn daily with him, and it is always good to have someone trustworthy by your side. I hope to continue growing, and helping him with whatever I can. He has built a successful program, and I feel blessed to be a part of it.”
