The Bright fight By Brenna Eller Editor In Chief
As many around Hutchinson Community College may already know, Vice President of Student Services Brett Bright was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer in November of last Bright year. As March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, “The Hutchinson Collegian” would like to give our full support and thoughts to Bright as he fights through this tough time. President of HutchCC and Leadership instructor Carter File has known Bright for the four years he has worked on campus and was the one to originally give him the position of Vice President of the college. “I’d call him my friend, I think he does a great job for the college professionally as well,” File said. File has a huge deal of respect for Bright and his ability to care for students’ successes. Since most students would only know Bright from their emails, File also mentioned Bright’s personality. “I’d say he’s calm and works through conflict and difficulties with great efforts,” File said, “He’s funny, has a
pleasant personality and is nice to be around.” When File learned of Bright’s diagnosis, he was concerned for the Bright family and how they would manage the process. “We all wish Brett lots of luck, we keep him in our thoughts and prayers,” File said for himself and the faculty.
Insight on the man behind the computer screen: Q: Where are you from? A: I am originally from Velma, Okla. It is a small town of approximately 1,200 and I had a graduating class of 32. Q: Where did you graduate from? A: I received my Bachelor’s degree in Counseling and Masters of Education from East Central University in Oklahoma. I am pursuing my EdS from Fort Hays State University and I only have one class to go. Q: How long have you been at HCC? A: I just celebrated my fourth year at HutchCC.
Q: Do you have children? Who are your greatest supporters through this tough time? A: I have my wife Nichole and two children, Micayla (16 going on 30) and Landon (12 going on 12). Nichole has been amazing in supporting me, she deals with my daily needs as well as reaching out to friends, family and the community to assist in raising money to fight cancer. I have had many friends from near and far contact me on Facebook as well as call, text and even donate to my cancer fund. My family has been very supportive, and I am grateful that Nichole’s parents live in Wichita. They have been a tremendous. Q: How supportive has the HutchCC Community been with your fight? A: Everyone at HutchCC has been supportive and I am truly humbled. Athletics provided me with sweats to wear during treatment, many of the faculty and staff have donated and purchased bracelets in the SSC office. They have also gone to meetings in my absence and taken over some of my job duties so
that students will continue to be served in my absence. Q: How have you been doing personally? Has your diagnosis changed? Are there good days and bad days? A: I have done pretty well so far. I was able to work during my chemotherapy and radiation. I am scheduled for surgery on March 28 to remove the tumor, and then I will have another round of chemotherapy. Fatigue has been the main symptom of treatment at this point, but making it this far with minimal complications has been a blessing. Q: What has the hardest part been for you through your battle? A: The inability to be in control and make plans. Facing a stage 4 cancer places your life in perspective and you want to make every moment count. Q: How has working at HutchCC helped you through your fight? A: It has given me a purpose and the ability to interact with others to take my mind off of cancer. I appreciate every See Bright, Page 5

Former HutchCC basketball player Cliff Dixon fatally shot in Atlanta during his birthday By Brenna Eller Editor In Chief
Former Hutchinson Community College basketball player Cliff Dixon died after being fatally shot at his birthday party in Atlanta on March 21. There is still an ongoing investigation as to who the shooter was. Dixon’s funeral was held on Monday. Kevin Durant, a star guard for the Golden State Warriors, was very close to Dixon since his parents adopted him. They grew up encouraging each other and always made the other proud. According to “The Atlanta Journal-Constitution”, Durant mentioned Dixon after receiving the NBA Most Valuable Player award in 2014, thanking him for always supporting him. After Dixon’s time at HutchCC ended in 2009, he went on to play basketball for two seasons at Western Kentucky, and in 2011 was dismissed for violating team rules. In 2014, Dixon went to play pro basketball in Austria. Ryan Swanson, HutchCC men’s basketball coach from 2006 – 2009, remembered his experience getting

to know Dixon and his family. Swanson went to Washington a few times to see Dixon and his family during recruiting. “I got to know them well, they’re good people,” Swanson said. “I even met Durant.” Swanson was always impressed with Dixon and the way he composed himself. “He got good grades, dressed nicely, and was always respectful towards his teammates and teachers,” Swanson said. Swanson said that he and the other coaches never had a problem with Dixon. “You could tell he was raised by good parents,” Swanson said. “They adopted him when he was a teenager.” When Swanson heard the news about Dixon he said couldn’t believe it. “I was heartbroken, I was stunned,” Swanson said, “I knew he was doing well because we stayed in touch mostly through social media.” According to Swanson, Bobby Maze, another HutchCC basketball player who was friends with Dixon, was responsible for Dixon transferring to HutchCC his sophomore year.
