Easy-peasy enrollment By Colin Shields Staff Writer

For many students, enrollment for the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters can be a confusing and even intimidating time. Whether it’s deciding what classes to take, contacting your advisor to set up a meeting to enroll, or deciding if you are even going to return for the upcoming semester, Hutchinson Community College students can face a lot of stress in the enrollment process. Sloan Hayden, a transfer from Missouri State, found the enrollment process to be relatively smooth after contacting his advisor. “As soon as I signed here to Hutch I was able to contact my advisor and send over my transcripts,” Hayden said. “I just ask her what classes will

benefit me on my degree path and make sure they will all transfer over after graduation. She’s really easy to work with and does a great job.” Brea Turner, HutchCC’s director of enrollment management and advising services, said that all students should complete enrollment as early as possible. “Students would benefit from enrolling ahead of time to save their seat in the course,” Turner said. “The student would just have to drop their course prior to the start of class or within the drop period if their plans change.” Another challenge students face throughout the process is getting in contact with their instructor to set up a meeting. Turner said she advises students to “Come to the Student Success

Center in Parker Student Union,” and from there, they will “get you directed to an advisor, or you can email worthamM@ hutchcc.edu for additional support.” When choosing what classes you need to take or want to take, academic advisors can also help direct students down the right path when making that decision. “Students can schedule an appointment with their advisor,” Turner said. “The student and advisor will create a road map for success in the student’s preferred area of study. This could be an academic or technical program.” For additional information on the enrollment process, students can visit the HutchCC enrollment website by going to hutchcc.edu/apply-enroll.

New clubs on campus: Catholic Connections By Mason Poepperling Staff Writer

Starting college can be a strange event. Being thrusted into an entirely new place, around entirely new people can be jarring, and it can be hard to make connections with people that you’ve never met before. There are several clubs to help Hutchinson Community College students meet people of similar interest, and one of the newer ones is Catholic Connections. Formed by Landon Eilert, Beloit sophomore, along-side Molly Stahl, HutchCC speech instructor, the original idea for Catholic Connections was for any Catholics who were new to HutchCC to come togeth-er and feel more at home in a new environment.

Over time, however, the club has opened its arms to more people outside of the Catholic faith. “The way I see our club is that we’re a way to bring together Catholics,” Eilert said. “We’re definitely here for Catholics who feel out of place, or are adjusting to a new life, but we also want to include other religions. We love everybody.” Stahl agreed with Eliert, saying being Catholic isn’t a requirement to join the club. “Catholic Connections is a group of amazing students that all got together and decided that they wanted to connect with each other here at HCC, regardless of backgrounds to share fellowship, give back to the community and have fun,” Stahl said. With its main goal of connecting HutchCC students of all backgrounds, Catholic Connections has man-

aged to spread their activities to many different areas outside of regular campus meetings. “We do things outside of HCC, like helping out at the soup kitchen,” Stahl said. “We’re also setting up a kickball tournament. It really just depends on the day.” At the end of the day, however, despite its name, Catholic Connections is a place for anyone who feels like they might not have a place on campus to meet other students in the same position they’re in. If any student out there is looking for a club on campus to make genuine friendships, Catholic Connections might be the club for them. “We love everybody, we invite everybody to join us no matter what their religion is,” Stahl said. “The more the merrier.”
