Ganus Building to be replaced by Holland-Waller Center BEN LANE news editor

The Ganus Building is scheduled to be demolished and replaced by the new Holland-Waller Center, bringing changes to departments and programs on campus. Some faculty have fond memories of the Ganus Building, but they are excited for change.

“What matters in any college is not the facility but being able to be face to face with somebody that has something to offer,” Dr. Kevin Klein, professor of history, said. “But, having a place is important, and that’s the thing that is lost when you lose this building.”

Though he is excited for the change, Klein said people, including himself, are losing memories made in the Ganus Building. Prior to hosting the History and Political Science and Foreign Language and International Studies Departments, the building at one time hosted the Student Center and Communication, Theatre and Music Departments.

“It makes sense to get all the programs together,” Dr. Nicky Boyd, director at International Student Services, said. “We’re scattered.”

Boyd said International Student Services is moving to have a central location for programs and departments, and he is excited about moving to a new location.

Klein said the Ganus Building is an eye sore for some and a “constant headache” for maintenance crews, but it transports older alumni through memories of their college days when they would socialize in the Ganus Building during its time as the student center.

Two benefits of the Holland-Waller Center, Klein said, are keeping the same location for the departments in the Ganus Building and newness.

“Especially coming out of the last two years, when so much has been about hanging on, the idea of starting fresh is nice,” Klein said. “That’s a good thing.”

The new facility will host the ROTC program, Office of International Student Services, Walton Scholars program, SinoAmerican Studies Institute and the English as a Second Language program. These programs, Klein said, have been added over time and placed where space was available, and they will now have a more purposeful location.

“It’s the only place that I’ve been since I came back from France and started teaching at Harding,” Dr. Robert McCready, professor of foregin languages, said. “It’s kind of a second home.”

McCready, who has been in his office in the Ganus Building for 20 years, said the building holds sentimental memories, but he is not sentimental about leaving the Ganus

University adds women’s studies beginning this summer SOPHIE ROSSITTO community editor

An English faculty member collaborated with multiple academic departments on campus to create a new women’s studies minor that students can add beginning this summer to explore the contributions of women and challenges they face in society.

Dr. Amy Qualls, associate professor of English, said she worked with members of the History, Bible and Behavioral Sciences Departments earlier this school year to create a women’s studies minor as an interdisciplinary option for all students.

Qualls said the minor is designed to help people gain a better understanding of different experiences, lives and stories of women.

“One of the things that I hope to show in this minor is that women’s experiences are broad and diverse,” Qualls said.

Qualls said one thing that motivated her to initiate this project was learning about her son’s experience working in law enforcement.

She said students preparing to enter fields — such as criminal justice, counseling and ministry — that involve working with large groups of women could especially benefit from learning more about challenges women face in vulnerable situations.

Junior English major Stacy Roibal said she plans to declare the new minor because it may be beneficial for her future career.

Roibal said that after college, she might incorporate concepts from women’s studies into her writing or take on an advocacy role for women.

“I think it’s also really, really important that if I’m going to call myself a feminist and say that I advocate for women, then I should really know what I’m talking about,” Roibal said.

Qualls said all students minoring in women’s studies are required to take introduction to women’s studies, an English class taught

by Qualls, and women in western society, a history class taught by Dr. Julie Harris. In addition, the course menu for this minor includes a variety of other options from departments across campus.

Qualls said she began working to create a women’s studies minor four or five years ago, but the timing was not right. When Qualls learned the History Department was considering forming this minor, she collaborated with Harris and other members

of the department for the project. Qualls said people in the behavioral sciences department and Dr. Monte Cox, dean of the College of Bible and Ministry, were also instrumental in helping to integrate their fields of study into the minor.

Qualls said her group started building the women’s studies minor by evaluating the course list she had created. Then, several committees considered the proposed minor before it was passed.

Baker-Abrams said she feels that women often do not receive enough recognition for their work, so she is excited for the women’s studies minor to be available for students.

“I’d love to see as many people taking the opportunity as possible,” Baker-Abrams said.

“But I think an overall goal would just be helping to further knowledge about women’s contributions and also ongoing needs that women have.”

his is the time of year for transitions.

Some students may be heading into a summer full of opportunity. Others may be entering into a season of the unknown. And maybe some are starting down a new path.

Everyone has their own unique story. For me, I’m transitioning out of the role of Student Association (SA) president. As I’m preparing to pass on the gavel to our next SA president, Megan Sledge, I’ve been reflecting on my time in this role.

The role of SA president is incredibly unique.

For one year, I get to be a part of this campus in a very focused and deliberate way. I have a front row seat to the daily joys and challenges that happen at a university. It’s a dynamic job that requires lots of listening and serving. As I finally feel like I have a good understanding of how to do the job, it’s time to leave (I quickly found out that there is no handbook on how to be a “good” SA president, you just kinda figure it out as you go haha).

But one of the most impactful lessons I’ve taken away from this experience is the beauty

of being a part of a collective story. Everything you do is based on the foundation of others.

Nothing you do stands alone but is deeply rooted in everyone’s individual stories. There is almost always someone who came before you and someone who will come after you. There is a lot of peace that comes from understanding that you are not alone, but that there is a community of people you are going through life with. Communities can experience a lot of change over time. A year ago, we selected our theme of the year: “Keep Moving Forward.”

This was chosen because of the transitions that we are going through as a school with a new University president stepping in on June 1. In all reality, we are always transitioning. Nothing is permanent. We are always being called on to the next thing. Instead of just looking for security, balance and safety in our temporary tasks, be willing and open to new opportunities.

Of course, be present where you’re at today. But it’s so important to remember that God, through his spirit, is constantly molding and shaping us. Our job is simply to be willing to grow.

I have three very special friends who served with me on the SA this year as executives. They have been a consistent and faithful presence in my life. David Reed, thank you for your friendship and dedication to serving the student body. Abbey Masters, thank you for your awesome ideas and constant willingness to help me. And thank you Hannah Hackworth for always being there for me through good times and hard times — you made this year happen.

Students, you have a lot to look forward to with Megan Sledge being your SA president.

As Harding transitions into a new era, Megan is going to do a great job leading you and giving back to this community. Thank you, Harding University student body, for giving me this opportunity. And as I transition to the next phase of my life, I’ll always treasure this season of my life forever. It’s been an honor serving as your SA president.

I am writing to thank the producers for including the host/hostess/ensemble and jazz band number just before intermission.

The choice of the song “From Now On” spoke volumes of affirmation to all those who protect us from injustice, assist us in crisis, treat us when injured and do it because they want life to be the best that it can be for all of us. It was moving to see the faces of Harding students and faculty contributing to relief from national and international distress.

When Hugh Jackman sang “From Now On” in “The Greatest Showman,” it was the turning point in his awareness of how he had lost sight of the people who were valuable in his life.

“A man learns who is there for him When the glitter fades and the walls won’t hold.”

‘Tattoos on the Heart’

ast week I received a call from a friend.

“I have a book you have to read: ‘Tattoos on the Heart,’ ” she said so excitedly that I hesitated to tell her that it’s one of my favorite books. “Tattoos on the Heart” is a stirring essay on how rich our lives can be when we find the joy in loving others and receiving love. The author, Father Greg Boyle, a priest in Los Angeles lovingly referred to as “Father G,” is the founder of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang-intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world.

“Tattoos on the Heart” is filled with stories of gang members and ex-gang members that Father G has known through the years and the moral lessons he learns from them. Father G recounts stories of gang members — which he lovingly refers to as “homies” — that will make you laugh, cry and recognize them as image-bearers of Christ. In spite of their circumstance, Father G approaches each person as a child of God, fully deserving of the love and compassion we all need. From the giant, tattooed Caesar, we learn how to feel the worth of God’s love. From 10-yearold Lula, we learn the importance of being known and acknowledged. From Pedro, we understand the patience needed to rescue someone from darkness.

The subtitle — “The Power of Boundless Compassion”— describes Father G’s philosophy for accomplishing changes in the hearts and

lives of these gang members. In addition to love and compassion, Father G provides education and empowers gang members by providing jobs, school programs, psychiatric care and tattoo removal. Homeboy Industries includes businesses such as a bakery, screen printing and graffiti removal to name a few.

The income from these businesses helps sustain the work at Homeboy.

Father G doesn’t glorify any of the gang members or their actions, and he acknowledges that Homeboy is not for everyone, but for people that are ready for change.

However, Father G’s approach to showing God to others can vastly improve and enrich our society. The book had such an impact on me that my wife and I drove eight hours one weekend to hear Father G speak about God’s work through him and others. Weary of seeing gang related killings in Central Arkansas at rates that should alarm us all, Father G also inspired me to spend time with former gang members and people re-entering society from incarceration in Arkansas with a non-profit named Restore Hope. I have gained more than I have given in my involvement with the gang members as we all struggle on our journey through life thankful for God’s boundless grace. We have also been talking with Homeboy Industries as we try to replicate their success using entrepreneurship principles to empower people in crisis and re-entry.

A couple caveats: Don’t read “Tattoos on the Heart” if you are offended by colorful language or death, as Father G and the gang members are real, and at the time of writing Father G had performed more than 150 funerals of his gang member friends.

Also, don’t feel bad if working with gangs or the poor is not your thing. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 12 that we all have different gifts and talents. However, beware, because as Father G says, we often become too focused on our own lives and successes to remember our obligations to our fellow humans – rich, poor or in between.

No matter our circumstances, we all need boundless love. “Tattoos on the Heart” illustrates the impact of giving and receiving boundless, unconditional love.

never planned on becoming an opinions writer for The Bison. When I applied for the staff position of beat reporter as a sophomore, I thought I was applying for a position where I would just be writing news stories. As an underclassman, the opinions page had always been my favorite to read, but I had no intentions of writing for it.

Yet, when I arrived at the StuPubs retreat at the beginning of my junior year, I met Kinsey Stubblefield, who was the opinions editor at the time. Pretty soon she asked me, “So what do you want your opinions column to be about?”

Her question completely took me by surprise. Over the next few days, I tried to decide what to do. Should I quit? Should I try to see if I could switch positions (this would be rather embarrassing for me, as it would require me admitting that I had no idea what position I had applied for)?

Finally, I decided to go with my third option: Just go for it.

Several reasons convinced me to go ahead and accept the challenge. First of all, I loved The Bison as an underclassman and wanted to be a part of an undergraduate journalism publication like this. I mean, how often do you get the chance to get published in a print newspaper on a weekto-week basis? Second, I was encouraged by my friends and family to not give up this opportunity. And third, I decided that I felt like I really had something to say. At Harding, we think. We think about our classes, about faith, about our relationships, about our school, about politics, about all types of things all the time. That had been my experience, and I decided to use this opportunity to channel my thoughts into a newspaper opinions column.

Without a doubt, I would consider this to be the best decision that I have made as a student here at Harding. After writing as a beat reporter for one semester, I became the opinions editor and have served in that role since. First of all, I love The Bison staff, and have so many great memories of deadline nights spent with the other editors over the past two years. Second, I have enjoyed engaging with all of the students and faculty members who have written for the opinions page. I know so many more people and so much more about the Harding community by meeting these writers and reading their articles.

Lastly, the job of writing a weekly opinion article has been a truly wonderful experience for me. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to share my thoughts and opinions with the Harding community for these past two years. But as much as I have enjoyed sharing my perspective and seeing my face in the paper, the best part about this job has been its challenges.

Writing my articles forced me to really do some critical thinking and self-analysis that I would have not otherwise done.

Every week, I not only had to ask myself: “OK, what do you really believe about this issue?” but “Is this really a perspective worth sharing?” and “If so, how can you communicate it most effectively in 600 words?” This was a challenge I met better at some times than others, but all in all I am grateful that this was a struggle I had the opportunity to engage in.

And with that, I wish to close my final article with two statements. First, thank you to everyone who took the time to read any of my opinions. Second — and this is especially for anyone returning to campus in the fall — what’s your opinion? I encourgae you to come share it in The Bison.

Let us be uncomfortable together A

s Christians, we have a difficult time being uncomfortable. We shirk away from the topics that make us squeamish like sexuality, racism, gluttony, idolatry or anything that feels too heavy to unpack in public. Fireside chats and intimate coffee dates are swell moments for these conversations, but does the world really know where we stand when it comes to the issues that really matter? Do they know our taste in gospel music before our testimony? Or do we only allow ourselves to be truly known by those we feel won’t reject us? How will the Church grow if we only talk to its members?

I have noticed throughout my time at Harding that we like to pull out the nice porcelain dishes, so to speak, when company is around. This is understandable; an institution like Harding always has an underlying pressure to impress to some degree or another. However, like the Church, I feel as though we miss out on opportunities to be real with others and to allow our hearts to be seen, to really show the cracks in our foundation and how we are striving to properly fix them. I’ve also seen Harding show up to the table when it was undoubtedly difficult to do so. Bravo and cheers to you, Harding, for choosing to do so.

I am reminded of the town hall meeting hosted by the Black Student Association (BSA) back in March in light of the Black Histor y Month panel backlash. How overwhelmingly wonderful was it to look out at the Student Center pit into a sea of faces and see how many people were there to show solidarity. I was genuinely happy to see not only students, but to see faculty, staff and administration there in support of what the BSA aimed to do: Make room for the discomfort amongst Black and other non-White students on campus, and let it be heard.

I have continued to see a heightened interest in the BSA and to a degree, it makes me happy. Though the attention feels nice, let us be careful to not reduce such an important organization to a clout chaser or a money maker. We, the BSA, are here to provide a safe space for marginalized voices and an opportunity for others to learn from those voices at Harding. To those who have reached out to the BSA either this year or in previous years, thank you so much for your consideration. For those who have participated in our gatherings and events, thank you for your time. We greatly appreciate all of you.

Moving forward, I want to encourage Harding and the Church at large to be uncomfortable together. Let us open ourselves up for difficult conversations with those we disagree with and actually listen to one another. Let’s not think too highly of ourselves, lest we become like Pharisees in our approach to living and spreading the Gospel. I will close out my sentiments with 2 Corinthians 13:11: “Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.” Grace and peace to us all.

Life at Harding as a Walton Scholar

uring my time in college, I started doing haircuts for my friends in my free time. One time, my very good friend, Lane Bortell, came to get a haircut, and after talking about everything for a while he asked me how it feels to be a Walton scholar. I stopped for a moment and I realized that it was the first time that someone has asked me that. I probably didn’t give the most complete answer at the moment; however, after thinking more about it I would say that for me being a Walton or any international student feels very much like being in a Christopher Nolan movie. You have to deal with your past, which includes your goals and expectations from your family and your country, as well as with your present, where academic and social life in a new language becomes the new reality, and also your future, which is how to identify and piece together all the tools and lessons acquired during your time in college. These three different aspects play a major role in our everyday life, and I try really hard to keep them in balance hoping that they will converge into a great end in which everything will make sense.

The majority of Waltons come from very difficult situations back home such as poverty,

corruption and insecurity. The desire to fight against these situations is usually what drives the Waltons to excel and stand out in everything they do. In my case, when I got that call saying that I had gotten the scholarship, I knew that my life would never be the same again. As the plane was taking off, I knew that I was taking with me not just my luggage, but the hopes and expectations of the people I was leaving behind in my dear country: Panama. Remembering where we come from, and why we are here is something we have very clear when we get here, but sometimes it requires effort to stay faithful to it as time goes by and life becomes more and more comfortable.

As I stepped foot at Harding for the first time, besides being really impressed by the campus size and beauty, I knew that from there on the clock started to count down. I had ahead of me four years that I knew would fly by, so I had to get the most out of it. To my surprise, whenever I introduced myself as a Walton the majority of people would already have high expectations about me. However, besides trying to keep good grades, I learned very quickly that I had to find a way to balance both academic and social life. Getting used to a new culture

was very hard, but I am very grateful for all of those friends that very patiently answered even the silliest questions that I had. Having a big community of other Waltons was also a great blessing for me. As time has passed, I still try to decide wisely how to invest each of my days at Harding.

The third thing that usually defines the life of Waltons is the uncertainty about the future, and how to make the experience at Harding as useful and memorable as possible. In my case, whenever I am invited to something I try to say yes, mostly to learn about how people do things differently. Some of the major lessons that I would take back to Panama are understanding the importance of defining a personal set of values, taking risks, nourishing relationships and continuously improving everything I do.

Undoubtedly, the experience of being a Walton might be totally different depending on who you ask, but I would say that in my case I cannot be more than grateful for the opportunity of calling home a place like Harding.

“Pick a Glass, Mrs. Seinfeld!”

TV sitcom moms have come a long way since “Leave it to Beaver.” As Mrs. June Cleaver, Barbara Billingsley epitomized the perfectly coiffed, manicured and sensible stay-at-home mom. She knew how to handle her two boys with just the right amount of gracious discipline, and there were always fresh cookies hot from the oven.

Or consider Carol Brady, played by Florence Henderson, the matriarch of TV’s most famous blended family on “The Brady Bunch.” With six kids, she still managed to solve every child’s problem with a light touch. Of course, she had a full-time maid, which helps.

Not all TV mothers fit the same mold.

Morticia Addams and Lily Munster were hardly members of the PTA or hosts of the Garden Club, yet Carolyn Jones and Yvonne de Carlo managed to love and support their families in their own macabre ways.

Working moms showed us it was possible to do it all, and the best was Claire Huxtable.

A lawyer, wife, mother, art collector, singer and activist, she changed TV mothering, and Phylicia Rashad’s pioneering role deserves respect despite what we now know about her TV husband.

Then came Roseanne Barr. The sharptongued working-class mother broke every June Cleaver rule and spent more time insulting her children than bandaging their boo-boos.

“Roseanne” was, of course, a parody of an earlier era of TV moms that dated back to “Ozzie and Harriett” from the 1950s.

Relieved of the burden of following midcentury ideals,TV moms got complicated, and as Marie in “Everybody Loves Raymond,” Doris Roberts hid her overbearing schemes and smothering affection behind a smile and a plate of cannoli.

When “Seinfeld” first aired in the summer of 1989, viewers soon realized that it was

about four New York singles who should never become parents. But they had parents on the show, and with the passing of Estelle Harris earlier this month and Liz Sheridan two weeks later, two of TV’s most eccentric moms are gone.

As the mother of the neurotic slacker George Costanza, Estelle Harris, 93, was a shrill redhead with a short fuse, sort of an anti-Lucille Ball. When her husband Frank filled up the garage with unsold computers, she plowed her car into his inventory. When Jerry’s parents snubbed her dinner invitation, she threw up her hands and yelled, “I got all this paella.” When Frank offered his customers free gifts from his home, she screeched from the kitchen, “You’re not giving away our water-pick.”

Estelle Harris later voiced Mrs. Potato Head in the “Toy Story” series, memorably telling Don Rickles to put on his “angry eyes” before a fight.

Liz Sheridan, also 93, was Jerry Seinfeld’s mother on the show. She and husband Morty (Barney Martin) were the classic New Yorkers who moved to Florida, keeping the heat on in the summer, dining out at 4 p.m. and bickering over cookies. In one scene, Helen is upset at Morty.

“What did you have to open these cookies for? There’s already an open box over here.”

“I wanted a Chip-Ahoy.”

“But I don’t want all these open boxes!”

“Look, I got a few good years left. If I want a Chip-Ahoy, I’m having it.”

Would this have happened to Ward and June Cleaver in their 70s? Who knows, but when Jerry gives his father a “Wizard” electronic organizer, Morty is the clueless older dad who doesn’t know how to open it. And when Jerry manages the feat with ease, Helen is the supportive mom who claps her hands and yells, “Yay! Jerry got it open!”

In our family, whenever someone does something that takes zero skill, we all clap and say, “Yay! Jerry got it open!”

Or there’s the classic episode when Elaine has to get a drug test at work and she absent-mindedly eats a poppy-seed muffin for breakfast. She rushes over to Jerry’s apartment and — in a panic — begs his mother to loan her a “sample.” Mrs. Seinfeld is flustered by the request and starts rummaging in her son’s cupboard, looking for a suitable glass for the chore. But she can’t decide which would be best.

Hence Elaine’s frantic catchphrase: “Pick a glass, Mrs. Seinfeld, pick a glass!”

By the time she appeared on the show, Liz Sheridan had already been on one hit sitcom, playing Mrs. Ochmonek opposite a furry alien puppet named “ALF.” She had a long career in show business and had even dated James Dean in the 1950s.

Sure, the show “Seinfeld” could reach serious lows in bad taste, and its cast of selfabsorbed ne’er-do-wells was hardly a model for anybody. Yet the “show about nothing” changed TV, and the lively matriarchs were a big part of its success. It hardly seems fitting to wish these famously loud women to rest in peace, but if I were an angel, I wouldn’t stand between them and the thermostat.

Tennis team bids farewell to senior players

Bird watching At the time this story is released, I will not have been turkey hunting this year.

Even though the hunting season kicked off Monday, the closest I have come to a turkey is a random sighting on a backroad in White County.

This is not unusual for me. The first time I went turkey hunting was last year, and I did not even bring a gun with me. Instead, I filmed my brother to make a short film for one of my class projects. Yes, we were successful, and yes, I did film the turkey being shot and showed it to the class. Tomorrow, when I go out before sunrise, I don’t plan to bring a gun either.

Arkansas is not known as a turkey hunting destination. The population is declining each year, in part due to habitat destruction.

According to a book I never returned to my elementary school, the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas have been entirely deforested and replanted twice since the state’s unionization, and a substantial portion of hardwood trees have been replaced by pines.

In 1980, Arkansas had an estimated halfmillion acres of nonnative pines, and a 2019 estimate put the total acreage at 2.5 million.

Pine patches are beneficial to turkeys in the short term, but eventually, pines inhibit adequate habitat needed to sustain a thriving turkey population.

Despite regulations introduced in recent years and an abrupt end to the Arkansas turkey fall season in 2009, the population is still falling. In 2003, nearly 20,000 of these Thanksgiving delights were harvested. In 2021, 7,013 turkeys were harvested, a 15% decrease from 2019 totals and nearly 65% decrease from 2003.

The 2003 season was longer than contemporary seasons, and the regulations in place then are not the same as they are today.

This partly accounts for the high number of harvests, but according to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commision, Arkansas is still well below its goal of 12,000 - 15,000 harvests each year. Restoring brood rearing and nesting habitats necessary for turkey reproduction is key to wild turkey success.

But, the declining population is not the reason I am not bringing my 20 gauge shotgun; I have no issue with continuing a well regulated turkey season. I simply like listening to turkeys.

I enjoy communicating with them using calls. I enjoy watching them interact while trying to find me, who they think is a turkey looking for love (some say I am). They are fascinatingly intelligent and cautious birds, and hunters often track them between gobbles for miles, only to lose them to the vast forests of public land.

White County frequently places in the top 10 for number of harvests in Arkansas.

It is nestled at the bottom of the east central region of Arkansas, and counties above it, namely Stone, Izard, Cleburne and Fulton across the east and north central regions, have especially high turkey populations.

Even though White Ccounty does not have the highest total populations, part of it may have one of the densest. White county can be divided into two dichotomous geographic parts: one is the foothills of the Ozarks and the other is the gateway to agriculture.

ETHAN CONN guest writer The Lady Bisons claimed the Great American Conference (GAC) championship after winning their final regular-season match last Friday, April 15, against Arkansas Tech.

This is the Lady Bisons’ third GAC Regular Season Championship and their second in a row.

The women’s team finished the regular season with a 17-4 record and are winners of seven straight games.Sophomore Grace Dodd explained some reasons for the team’s success as of late.

“The key to our success right now is our unity as a team,” Dodd said. “We have grown in our ability to support one another, cheer extra loud and support each other on and off the court. We never know which lines will win, but everybody pulls their weight at one time or another. That is what makes a true team.”

The women’s team has thrived in home matches this season, going 10-1 at the David Elliot Tennis Complex thus far.

Sophomore Romane Britt described some of the advantages of playing at home.

“The atmosphere at home is really just electric,” Britt said. “Having fans at each one of our matches screaming all of our names is indescribable. It really gives us that extra push of energy needed to win matches.”

April 16 was supposed to be senior day for the men’s and women’s teams as they were scheduled to face off against Delta State at the David Elliot Tennis Complex. However, the matches were canceled due to heavy rain.

Five seniors were going to be recognized — Allison Carpenter, Emily Carpenter, Lindy Carpenter, Allison Jenkins and Joee Crocker. Despite not getting to have their senior night, Dodd recognized the impact that these seniors have left on the program.

“These seniors have meant a lot to this tennis team as well as the school,” Dodd said.

“Some of them have joined clubs in their time here, been in an association prevalent to their major and have made a major impact in the classroom, in turn influencing the team’s overall GPA. Our seniors all bring something different to the table. Three of our

seniors will be pushing for winning records for the duration they were at Harding.”

The team was not able to play a senior day match, but they were able to celebrate inside the seniors with friends and family. Allison Carpenter is not dwelling on the loss of senior day but looking toward accomplishing more this season.

“For now, our team goal is to get through the conference tournament, hopefully as champions for the second year in a row,” Carpenter said. “As a senior, my goal is to make it to graduation and finish out the tennis season strong. Win or lose, I know myself and my teammates want to do our best and see how far we can go for the last part of the season.”

Postseason play begins with the GAC tournament on Friday, April 29, through Sunday, May 1, in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Harding’s regular-season championship earned them the No. 1 seed in the tournament and automatic qualification to the semifinals, which will take place on Saturday, April 30, at 1 p.m.

Witzke surpasses hitting streak record

JAKE MOONEY guest writer Harding baseball’s senior Chris Witzke broke the school hitting streak record April 8 and has since extended his streak to 19 games after the loss against Northwestern Oklahoma.

Witzke spoke about his excitement over breaking the record.

“It feels amazing,” Witzke said. “It’s an honor to be able to get into the record books and have my name next to some of the best players who have come through Harding.”

The record is important because of the amount of skill, patience and consistency needed to get a hit game after game.

Assistant baseball coach Zach Beasley said the streak is interesting because baseball itself is a “funny game.”

“You can hit the ball on the barrel four times in a game and hit all of them at someone and go 0-4 without a hit,” Beasley said. “So, to be able to actually get a hit for that many games is crazy in and of itself and the ability to consistently hit the ball on the barrel in the big parts of the field.”

It takes a lot of talent to put together a streak like Witzke has done.

Head coach Patrick McGaha said the record is so hard to obtain because of the amount of concentration required by the batter.

“It takes an incredible amount of focus,” McGaha said. “Being able to take one plate appearance at a time and really even one pitch within that plate appearance at a time.”

One of the things that could cause the streak to end is not being focused enough.

“If he were to have been concerned with the record instead of with having quality at bats, then he wouldn’t have been successful,” McGaha said. “In the big picture of our season, and for our team, the record isn’t really important.”

A big part of being consistent is preparation for games and at-bats.

“A big part of getting ready for a game mentally and physically starts with batting practice, staying calm and not being too critical,” Witzke said. “I try not to get too caught up in pregame rituals, but on a game day I always try to start my day with a few slices of Casey’s breakfast pizza.”

Two companies plan to expand services in Searcy

Construction of the First Security Technology Center continues on April 18 at the corner of North Main Street and East Race Avenue. First Security Vice President of Marketing Kristi Thurmon predicted that about 120 employees would be able to work in the new building.

TIANE DAVIS sports editor Bryce Corporation announced last Wednesday that the company would invest $80 million into expanding its operations in Searcy. With First Security Bank’s new tech center expected to be completed in 2023 as well, over 250 new jobs are predicted to enter Searcy within five years.

According to a statement Bryce released last week, the company plans to build a new manufacturing facility, as well as a distribution center in Searcy. Executive vice president over operations John Hite said Bryce’s announcement to expand in Searcy shows a commitment to the community.

“For me, it means, generationally, we will have a solid footing in Searcy,” Hite said.

“That’s important to me because we’ve got

lots of families who have kids and grandkids who need jobs. I like that it’s a long-term commitment to this community.”

Bryce Corporation stated in their press release that this expansion is part of the company’s five-year growth plan and is expected to create 142 jobs in Searcy. Hite said he is glad to have Bryce Corporation so close to Harding.

“It’s just nice to be neighbors,” Hite said. “It means a lot to me that we’re here and able to take advantage of some of the students that Harding is training and teaching. It’s just good for Searcy, good for Harding and good for the community.”

According to a statement by Kristi Thurmon, vice president of marketing at First Security Bank, the bank’s new facility will support its other locations across the state.

“With the construction of their new 57,000-square-foot technology center, Searcy-based First Security Bank is committed to Searcy and the surrounding area,” Thurmon said. “The new facility will house approximately 120 employees and support current operations of the bank’s 78 locations across Arkansas, while also providing space for future growth.”

First Security Bank president Nathan Rutledge said he is excited to see the new technology center project come to fruition in downtown Searcy.

“We are proud to call Searcy home and are looking forward to the future of our community and our company,” Rutledge said.

Searcy Mayor Kyle Osborne said it is good to have economic growth in any community, and the plans of the two companies will help the Searcy community a lot.

“The owners of both businesses had the option to choose other communities for these expansions, but they chose Searcy,” Osborne said. “These projects will help our community tremendously with economic and job growth.”

Osborne said part of his campaign was based on economic growth, and with these two projects building on that goal, he said the growth can only have a positive impact on the Searcy community.

“For the last two years, COVID-19 has made it difficult to start new projects,” Osborne said. “Now, as COVID-19 loses its grip on our community and with citizens of Searcy voting to renew the penny tax, we are moving full steam on completing projects and starting new ones all around the city.”

“My son attends McRae Elementary, so I reached out to their principal to see if there was any way Harding volleyball could be of service to her or the school,” head women’s volleyball coach Meredith Fear said. “We started doing it last fall and continued this semester as well.”

This opportunity allows the team to bond outside of the volleyball court and puts Harding students into the Searcy community.

“The Harding community is so easy to get plugged into, but then the Searcy community, outside of Harding, it’s really cool to find ways to get plugged into that community,” junior outside hitter Ally Stoner said. “I love doing the car line because even at seven in the

morning the kids have this energy to them and this joy that they bring. Doing this with my teammates who also bring so much joy, I love that, and it’s just super fun.”

Even in the freezing cold weather, wrapped up in their coats, the team makes an effort to be at the school from 7:30-8 a.m., helping kids out of their cars and safely into the building.

“One thing that has been … difficult is whenever the weather would be bad we would be out there bundled up in the cold,” Winiger said. “It’s been really great now that the weather is nice out.”

This early morning time with the McRae students will continue for the team in the future and could possibly look different next semester.

“We definitely plan to continue working with McRae in the future,” Fear said. “We

are hopeful that next year we may be able to get back into the classrooms and help in a bigger way.”

Volleyball team volunteers at local elementary school KAYLEIGH TRITSCHLER guest writer

The Harding University volleyball team spends a small portion of their Wednesday mornings with the children at McRae Elementary School. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., the volleyball women greet the kids as they go to school.

“Whenever we go to the car line, we go on Wednesday mornings, and we open up the doors in place of the teachers,” junior libero Emma Winiger said. “We go out there so that the teachers can get ready. We say good morning to the kids and make sure they have everything in their bags. It’s just a great way to start off our days and theirs.”

Knights hosts annual jousting tournament on campus GABRIEL HUFF asst. copy editor

Men’s social club Knights hosted a jousting tournament on April 16, an annual, interclub event Knights hosts every Spring Sing weekend.

Junior Knights activities director Mason Shappley served as the organizer of the Knights Joust. He said the joust is an interclub event that occurs during Spring Sing every year.

All clubs are invited to participate.

This year, Shappley said about 16-18 people participated in the joust. The Knights club

provided the polyvinyl chloride pipes — or lancers — used to hit opponents while the contestants were charged with responsibility of creating their own armor for the fight.

The tournament was held outside the Ezell.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the event lasted for about 45 minutes, Shappley said. Each battle contained three rounds. Rain and mud made things more interesting.

“We filled up a lot of the lawn,” Shappley said. “It was a lot of fun, very energetic, a lot of energy.”

Freshman Bailey Grace Flynn, a member of the women’s social club Zeta Rho, participated

in the event. She felt nervous at the beginning before giving into the fun.

“It was really fun,” Flynn said. “It was really silly, just couldn’t take yourself too seriously.”

Shappley said the Knights’ president gets to select the winners of each battle based on the hits delivered by players. Junior Hannah Atkins, a Knights queen, emerged as this year’s winner.

Atkins’ involvement in the joust tournament has an interesting backstory, Atkins said. Last year, she was a Texas A&M student visiting Harding to watch her friends perform in Spring Sing. During her visit, she witnessed the

Knights Joust and thought it was interesting that a small girl — sophomore Sophie Glover, a Knights queen — was jousting for this club.

“I ended up deciding to transfer to Harding and ironically enough Sophie ended up being my roommate and then I also ended up getting queened by Knights,” Atkins said.

“And then I ended up jousting. So it was a very full circle kind of thing.”

Atkins said she was surprised that she won the event.

“Going into it, I was really nervous,” Atkins said. “But then I ended up making it far and winning.”

Honors College announces new faculty fellow SARA MCCLARAN features editor

Associate professor of English Dr. Amy Qualls has been chosen to serve a two year appointment as faculty fellow in the Honors College. Qualls has been a part of Harding’s faculty for 11 years, with several of those spent also teaching Honors Symposium over the summer.

“When the job description came out, one thing specifically caught my eye more than anything else, and it was this notion that the person who occupied that fellow position would mentor students — mentor them through their research, in their academic pursuits,” Qualls said. “That is something that I have long done, you know, informally for students across different disciplines.”

Qualls said she found the position a way to formalize what she was already doing, and she came into the application process with a lot of ideas about how to grow and improve the honors program.

The Honors College is committed to providing students with the right mentors and connecting them with scholars who could model for them what a strong, scholarly life looks like, Honors College assistant dean Dr. Jim Miller said. He said the faculty fellow is there to serve as a mentor to students in scholarly achievement, advise honors students with fellowship applications and help the Honors College continue to develop diversity.

“I think it’s important to diversify an honors college,” Qualls said. “I came into that application with a lot of ideas about what an honors college demographic might look like and how we could sharpen some of the processes that we have to serve students better.”

Diversity in this context, Honors College dean Dr. Kevin Kehl said, means they want to bring on students from a diverse academic selection. Part of that is accomplished by expanding the majors represented within the Honors College, and part of it is having faculty that can help serve the needs of the student body.

“We know that more than 50% of the student body is female,” Kehl said. “We want to serve the needs of a very large portion of the student body.”

Miller said Qualls was a proven scholar on campus, and she believed in the work the Honors College is doing as it related to the contributions students can make to the academic community, the scholarly community and the community of students.

“She’s committed to helping develop students in these ways, develop them in their leadership and in their service to others,” Miller said. “We are committed and excited about continuing to build on the legacy of the Honors College. We think adding these positions, specifically Dr. Qualls, [to] the scene is really gonna help us as we move forward into a really exciting future for honors.”

Qualls said part of her hope was to get students who are already a part of the Honors College, whether they be new or about to graduate, to share what they would like to see happen or change so students who want to explore their disciplines can get more specialized attention.

“We have so many students that are officially admitted into the Honors College, but I think that they don’t really take advantage [of ] what the Honors College could do and offer for them,” Qualls said.

“I would hope that students begin to share their ideas with us.”

IMCO holds fundraiser for 100 Families, seniors collaborate in capstone branding project HANNAH HACKWORTH student writer

The academic group Integrated Marketing and Communication Organization (IMCO) has had a busy past few weeks. At the end of Spring Sing’s big rehearsal day, “Super Saturday,” they had a fundraiser event for the 100 Families initiative.

“Tuesday, April 5, IMCO was meeting, and I basically just said, ‘Hey guys, we need to figure out something, because you can rent the Rialto, and the latest Spider Man is coming, but we need to do it fast,’” IMCO sponsor Lori Sloan said. “So, Jenna Galloway, Molly Cofer, Lucas Cline and Easton Eads all spoke up and said, ‘Let’s do a Super Saturday Superhero fundraiser.’ So, this was Tuesday the fifth, and the movie was April 9.”

With a quick turnaround, the group got to work digitally promoting.

“We started promoting it Thursday the seventh, and I had 10 Cash Apps that day,” Sloan said. “Most college kids don’t plan that far in advance, so I was excited.”

The majority of the proceeds went to 100 Families to refurbish items lost in the apartment fires earlier this semester.

“I think [IMCO students] learned how to come up with a creative idea and figure out how to do something for a good cause quickly and efficiently; also the power of digital marketing,” Sloan said.

In addition to the organization’s activities, senior integrated marketing communications (IMC) students completed their capstone branding project this past week in collaboration with graphic design and interior architecture and design students.

“Basically, they get a bunch of majors together to create a concept business,” senior IMC major Isabelle Cutts said. “This year it was a hotel. We had to create a luxury hotel, do a lot of research on demographics, psychographics, advertising plans and create all the materials you would want to present about it.”

Their gallery was open from April 12-21.

Cutts said the hardest part of completing this project was learning to communicate effectively within the group.

“There’s a lot of moving parts, a lot of different majors and eight people working together, but I was lucky enough to be on a team that had personalities that worked really well together, and we had a brand voice really early on,” Cutts said.

Junior interior architecture and design major Grant Wade’s group had different challenges.

“We were the only group that had one interior designer,”Wade said.“Every other group had two, so it was a lot less communication needed for our group, but a whole lot more work on one person. Communication with

I know I’m going to be working big time with graphic designers in the future, maybe not so much with integrated marketing communications, but to know those skills myself is a great tool.”

This project strengthened their group and personal work skills.

“I stayed up quite a few nights out of these past two weeks,” Wade said. “Having the time management to say, ‘These are the things that I need done by this date so I can be able to do all of my work in a timely manner,’ was probably the best lesson that I learned.”

Pat Garner retires as debate coach after over 50 years

MAGGIE SAMPLES lifestyle editor Professor of communication Dr. Pat Garner has decided to transition to part time teaching in the fall and will be retiring from his position as debate coach after an impressive 50-year career. Garner worked primarily in the Communication Department, but was able to merge his interest in communication with the Honors College.

Garner said he loved his job and all the work he put into his classes. He said a lot of preparation went into his classes; he created three of the honors courses that he taught.

The part-time teaching option will allow Garner to slowly transition to retirement.

He said he likes that aspect of it, because he didn’t want to leave all of his classes needing to be filled without warning.

“I really appreciate the school coming up with this sort of program where you can keep your health insurance, and I can still contribute to the retirement plan, and I get half my salary and then I teach an abbreviated load,” Garner said. “I have no problems with that. I think it’s a great opportunity.”

His post as debate coach will be filled by associate professor of history Dr. Jared Dockery.

“He debated for me years ago here at Harding,” Garner said about Dockery. “He’s

a terrific thinker. He understands arguments and is interested in current events, and he loves debate.”

Garner plans to spend his extra time reading, writing and refinishing antiques. He will continue to teach at Honors Symposium in the summer.

“I’ve enjoyed all of the classes I’ve taught,” Garner said. “But I have no regrets about my decision. I’m very positive about it. It’s a nice transition toward retirement from teaching.”

Garner said he has been involvesd in debate since 1964, and he has watched debate evolve during his time in debate and as a coach.

“I learned more from debate, from prepping for debate cases and encountering cases of other debate teams, than I did in college,” Garner said.

Debate involves traveling on the weekends, and Garner said it was growing difficult for him to be gone all weekend and still “be sentient in class.”

“I have no endgame,” Garner said. “I am going to just keep teaching as long as my mind is working well and as long as I can keep adding new things to my classes, because I enjoy that, and so I have no particular plan for that. But I like this, I like this idea of slowing down.”

“Anyone who has met Dr. Garner knows that he is a charismatic, intelligent and lively person,” Golden said. “He loves learning and has endless enthusiasm for discussion and knowledge. He knows how to think, cut to the truth, and is never hesitant to share his thoughts. It has been a privilege to learn from him about debate, but even more of a privilege to learn from him about expanding

worldviews, searching for truth and having confidence in faith.”

Having been on Harding’s debate team since his freshman year, junior Brandon Davis said Garner was one of the most interesting professors on campus.

“He’s helped me personally grow as a public speaker by offering brilliant insights and constructive criticism,” Davis said. “Harding will be hard pressed to replace him.”
