Moving forward, the gym will close, and Brandt will step more into working in the men ’ s mental health field to help other men to grow and become better versions of themselves. He has begun a movement called ‘The Warriors Way’ to grow and serve the male community. There is a Facebook page with a private alliance group which hosts a meeting each Monday night. It is free to attend, and attendees Pic supplied by Brandt Cogill

By Shanelle Schick

Brandt Cogill is a local Rockhampton man on a mission to help other men find their warrior within. Coming from a family of graziers, Brandt has always enjoyed martial arts and the discipline that stems from being involved in that The Warrior’s Way was born after Brandt experienced a near breakdown after a challenging period in his life The challenges of being a dad, running a business and training for competitive fights eventually led to burnout. During this time, he turned into a hermit not going anywhere or doing anything and eventually fell into a state of depression Throughout his years, he has always been an avid supporter of Movember raising awareness around men ’ s mental health. He ran boxing charity events to raise money and awareness amongst the community. It was this event that led to being a pivotal moment for Brandt, coaching 11 fights and being the main event himself, he reached a point in the evening where he ‘just wanted it to be over ’ A quick change in mindset and he decided not to quit, but to get up and fight on. His thought pattern soon became that he was fighting for his life, his mental health because the cause he was fighting for was ‘bigger than me ’ Delving deep into personal development and having recently attended a men ’ s retreat as a support person for his brother helped him to gain an insight into breathwork It was during the retreat that he realised that he is a true life warrior and has been training his whole life This led to finally having a life purpose back, knowing that ‘it’s not just about me anymore. A lot of growth can come out of the crap we go through and become a real blessing in disguise’

07

Finding His Way as a Warrior

Keep an eye out on The Warrior’s Way Facebook page for more information on The Alliance Group, the upcoming Rockhampton Charity Boxing Event along with retreats and workshops Brandt will be running as he steps fulltime into his business. Pic supplied by Brandt Cogill

08 are free to share their challenges, their wins and what they are grateful for..

Brandt says ‘ women had CWA, and blokes just went to the pub’ when reflecting on how mental health challenges were dealt with during his younger years It became quickly evident that there was no quality release for our male folk who tended to shake off their shared worries that came to the forefront after a few beers the next day as having had a few too many. They tended to just ‘get on with it’, never really addressing the underlying issues He is hoping to create a truer, more authentic level of communication where men can relate and share their experiences. Sometimes all it takes for someone is hearing that they are not alone and it can send out massive ripple effects Speaking up gives others permission to speak about their experiences

The kitty also has a balance of $150 as well. This means that we have the ability to provide payment for services not listed if you know of someone who is in need of something aside from the above or a helping hand with attending a retreat or workshop Please reach out and let us know! We can now accept credit card donations Head here if you would like to make a small contribution to allow us to give back to someone in need within the community.

There is also a nomination form available so that you can nominate someone to receive something from The Giving Fund anonymously.

Aphrodite Art School offers a variety of art workshops on the coast from glassware painting, paint and sip and Jules is keen to see everyone embrace their inner creative side Collaborating with local businesses to bring together art, beautiful food and great coffee is a passion of hers Beltera is the hat label of this artistic woman. Jules makes completely customised, high quality felt hats All her hats are completely handmade and are designed to last several lifetimes. Jules personalises each hat with beautiful embroidery giving them a feminine touch and uniquely setting them apart from anything else available on the market Having studied millinery and learning the art of hat making she uses her skills to create these works of art

Many of us were told when we were younger that we weren’t creative and that has carried on into our adult lives However, art and creativity help bring us back into our body During her workshops, Jules encourages everyone to just ‘do their own thing’ and embrace their creativity and individuality, rather than ‘paint by numbers’

12 source of much of Jules’ inspiration over the years A love for our local surroundings has led her to offer a ‘Paint and Hike Workshop’ on Great Keppel Island this month. Jules is very excited about bringing these two worlds together where participants will have the opportunity to explore the bushlands of what’s on our doorstep and use the scenery as a background to inspire the artist within With the end of the year creeping up on us rather quickly, now is a great time to make plans for a creative Christmas Party with your work colleagues or friends Jules is now taking bookings and these will sure to fill up quickly, so get in fast! The herbs section is becoming popular very quickly as customers can buy smaller quantities of what they need, thus making it very cost effective. There is a vast array available, it is well worth your while popping in next time you need to top up your stocks

Have you seen the latest addition to the coast’s wellness world?

The store is mobility friendly with a ramp at the front of the store for those customers needing easy access

Belinda Harris, owner and operator of Natureal Elements opened the store earlier this year. Her daughter Hunter had been having health challenges for several years and it wasn’t until she started using a PEMF (Pulsed Electronic Magnetic Fields) mat locally that she noticed a significant difference in her symptoms almost immediately The relief lasted a few days. Belinda began researching PEMF therapy and went on to purchase one for her own use She has since begun using them in her therapy rooms at Natureal Elements They are also available for hire through the store as well. The PEMF mats are used extensively in the USA and Canada as part of treatments in wellness clinics helping to relieve symptoms of multiple health conditions

There’s a DIY bar instore where you can make your own beauty products too!

Natureal Elements is your local store stocking Australian Made and local suppliers of chemical free cleaning and skin and beauty products. It is quickly becoming a one stop shop for herbs, wellness books and the likes It is also home to Emmett Therapy by Belinda Harris and Caitlin Jane Naturopath

The treatment is completely non invasive with the client able to remain fully clothed for the treatment

PEMF Therapy gently pulses the natural magnetic fields through the body, which induces microcurrents with cells to stimulate the body’s own healing processes.

Emmett Therapy is also one of Belinda’s passions. It offers the client a more targeted treatment to offer relief to a broader range of issues With Emmett Therapy the origin of the pain can be found and through a series of muscle release techniques relief can generally be found quite quickly. This is another treatment where you are able to remain fully clothed. If you are interested in learning more about Emmett Therapy, Belinda is hosting workshops at the shop this month. More details can be found on their Facebook page of head to our Events Directory at the back of this issue

PEMF Therapy uses gentle magnetic pulses

Do yourself a favour and head on in to Natureal Elements to check out the great range of natural products that they have on offer or to have a chat about how Emmett Therapy or PEMF may be able to assist you. Pic supplied by Natureal Elements

Meet Carra James an embodiment coach and facilitator of Access Consciousness Classes throughout Central Queensland. With over 25 years ’ experience working in natural therapies, Carra uses these tools to help her clients to feel more ease, more joy and to create more space to be themselves. It was at a turning point in her life that Carra found Access Consciousness. The Access Bars gave her the silence and space from her monkey mind to be able to start to unravel what was keeping her body locked in the wrongness of PTSD patterns At the time, there was a lot of self awareness about her patterns and programming that were keep her stuck, but nothing had helped to create true change. It has been through applying the Access tools, classes and receiving regular bars that she has found more energy, better health and more mental clarity than before You will often find Carra at local markets in Yeppoon and Emu Park as well as other events in Central Queensland. She also hosts regular Gift & Receive Sessions in Rockhampton Access Bars is just one of the classes and sessions that Carra offers. Helping Teens to 'Level Up' Their Skills

By Elise Tapiolas

As a young person I really struggled to understand where I fit into the world and I didn't have enough experience or maturity to know myself or understand my strengths I found it so incredibly difficult to know how I was meant to manoeuvre myself around this world, especially my education, my social networks and even navigating my closest relationships with my family. For the past 20 years my career has been focused on providing a nurturing and supportive space for other young people who might find themselves in the same situation I have been privileged enough to work for an organisation that shares the same passion. At The Real Group we have understood the need for further opportunities for our youth that may not 'fit into the box' of mainstream education. Through this, an exceptional 13 week alternative learning program has been developed to provide this support for 15 19 year olds in our community I pride myself and my team on being able to assist our youth to develop lifelong learning skills which have been specifically tailored to develop their confidence, while supporting their various engagement and motivation levels and individual needs We endeavour to provide further pathways for our youth and prepare them to enter the workforce, engage in further training opportunities or return to the educational setting to secure opportunities for their future.

17

18

Our young people are able to complete a Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways (FSK10219) with a strong focus on ensuring that we are involved in various activities to develop our connection with the community We also extend on this through the support of various members of Central Queensland to support our young people to learn about self care, mental and physical health, nutrition and well being This has been developed in a way which facilitates team bonding and practical hands on learning. I am exceptionally proud and passionate about this program and being able to be see my young people succeed has been second to none. I honestly wish a program like this existed when I was in high school, and I keep that in mind every day when I am planning the program and engaging with my youth. If anyone is interested in further information on this program, please don't hesitate to contact us at The Real Group on 4939 1445 or refer to our website below. https://www.realgroupaustralia.com.au/level up program/

Learn to recognise the signs of power misuse Hey there’s an elephant in the room

Relationships can play out day to day without addressing there is a problem It’s actually not spoken about freely, however some people wished their partner would just die. Oh you ’ ve even played it out how you would act at the funeral. You would feel bad but… ( For those of you whom this is flabbergasting, it’s all about the ease of an exit.) Take time to hear what each other feel and need 5. Make a change so you can both feel happy Some questions to consider. Has the love gone? Is it really love or is it complacency? Emotions Through Self-Compassion

22 Navigating

The first step is to recognise, or mindfully become aware that you are experiencing an emotion. The second step is to allow that emotion to exist. As tempting as it is to push it aside, give yourself some space to allow that feeling to be there As you allow that emotion to be there, you can start the third step which is to gently investigate Explore where you feel the emotion in your body, what does it feel like?

The final step in the R.A.I.N process to nurture that hurt part of yourself, speak kindly to it and give it what it really needs. This step might mean simply showing yourself compassion, it might mean letting something go, or it might even mean making changes in your life to better support yourself. So, the next time you are experiencing a slightly uncomfortable emotion, why not give this process go. Depending on the situation it might take a minute, or it might take days or weeks to move through. And always remember, it’s okay to seek help if your emotions becoming overwhelming

By Candice Fraser The Kindness Couch

If you are anything like me, or the majority of the population, when you experience a difficult emotion it can be tempting to push it aside, ignore it and pretend everything is fine. Unfortunately, this leads to a bottling up of emotions that simply can not be contained forever So how can you work through those uncomfortable emotions in a gentle way you ask? Many years ago, I learnt a beautiful mindful process developed by a group of Buddhist teachers that helps us navigate uncomfortable emotions in a nurturing and mindful way To make it super easy to remember it goes by the acronym R.A.I.N.

Recognise. Allow. Investigate. Nurture.

Gently ask yourself ‘where is this emotion coming from,’ and ‘what does this emotion need from me ’ Gently is the key word here!

Speaking of Death

23

Death is a very confronting topic for most of us, in fact for many it’s a topic they just won’t discuss This month, on August 8th it was National Dying to Know Day, a date which is all about fostering deep conversations about the one thing all of us have in common death. So, I’d like to devote this column to the conversation about death and dying, I hope you’ll stick with me As a celebrant, I work closely with the family members and friends of a deceased person to create a service or ceremony which is meaningful, reflects a life well lived and celebrates the legacy they leave behind Sometimes I meet with a person to plan their own celebration of their life, but most often I work with the family after their loved one has died. When your time comes, what sort of farewell do you want? Someone will have to make the arrangements have you let them know your ideas, the stories you want shared, the way you want to be remembered? It is, without doubt, the single best gift you can leave for your loved ones, so they are able to carry out your wishes without confusion, second guessing, or family members squabbling over different opinions Of course, there’s no guarantee your family will stick to your instructions but one of the best things you can do to help them through a very difficult time, is to let them know what your wishes are… particularly if you want to go out in style.

Leanne Smith Civil Celebrant

24

and for creative ideas and personal choices to be includedAs a Civil Celebrant I perform civil funeral ceremonies for those who do not wish to have a religious funeral ceremony. A civil funeral ceremon will focus more on the story of a life than on following any expected or traditional format, but it does frequently follow a similar order to a traditional funeral I also assist people who have religious beliefs but who do not wish the funeral service to be held at a church. Remember, there ar no “right” or “ wrong ” ways to celebrate a life, there’s only your way. I have been a funeral celebrant for over 13 years I you are undecided about what you want, you can talk to me any time. Leanne . Do you want a traditional funeral with the viewing, the funeral service, and the committal service. Or a Celebration of Life, or maybe a memorial service? Do you want a theme, or dress code? What music do you want to have played? Your Eulogy or life story who will write it? who will read it? do you want others to speak as well? Is there anything you particularly do (or DON’T) want? And what is a Funeral Celebrant's role? They will usually be the one who writes and leads the service, which carries with it the responsibility to ensure the funeral, and you or your loved one, is remembered well They will likely (but not always!) have the largest speaking role on the day. They will work to create and deliver a service which reflects the life, the personality, and the character of the deceased, a service that connects with those who attend, and gives everyone an opportunity to say goodbye This usually includes meeting with family members and sometimes with friends to understand who the deceased was and what details about their life should be shared during the funeral service The celebrant will write a service which is accurate, meaningful, respectful and they may, in some cases, prepare and deliver the eulogy. They may also help to select poems or readings. There is plenty of opportunity to be flexible in the order of service

The Complications of Chronic or Long-Term Stress

Skin acne, skin flare ups, inflammation. And more! Stress can have a huge impact on our health and it's easy to ignore the signs of stress or brush them off as something else However, it is important to be on the lookout for signs of chronic stress and start making changes to your life or reach out to a health care practitioner, friend or family member for help!

In the fast paced society that we live in, it's easy to see why so many people are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and run down. From work or study deadlines to looking after the family, financial pressures to social media, and everything in between, no wonder we need a holiday!

A good place to pick up a few multi purpose dog training tips is at our next Therapy Dog Walking and Social Group, which will meet at 8.30, September 1st at Kershaw Garden "Your dog is doing the best it can with the information you are providing." When my German Shepherd graduated from doggie kindergarten, I learned from the experience that dog training is really not about training dogs at all, but the owners. We learn about the communications that dogs understand and we become more skilled in that language

As well as the more primitive parts of our brain, the human brain has evolved beyond animals to have a more developed “ pre frontal cortex” sometimes referred to as the “Modern Brain”. This part deals with planning, decision making and impulse control amongst other things It is this human stuff that can override the impulsive Primal Brain and is analogous to the dog trainer It’s s, Charles St entrance.

the one that decides how we want our dog (mind) to be, how to make it a safe and a pleasant companion rather than one we are continually worried will raid picnic baskets, run in front of cars, bite someone or horrify our visitors by humping their legs

If we are trying to change some little (or big) thing about ourselves, it is worth thinking about how our Modern Brain can become a better trainer for those instinctual parts of our mind. Like an unruly dog, our primitive mind reacts impulsively to every random desire or fear Calming techniques, clear intentions, consistent routines and persistent practice can help us tame those erratic thoughts, bring them to heel and create an inward strength and peace akin to that we see in the comfortable bond between the well trained dog and its handler

Working in the mental health sector and the experience of battling my own unwanted habits has led me to reflect on the fact that the habitual part of our mind is not unlike the mind of a dog In humans, the parts of the brain responsible for habit is sometimes referred to as the “Primal Brain” The Primal Brain deals with survival and belonging which is pretty much what a dog’s mind is concerned with.

Finding the right therapist for you can be tricky but it is something worth putting time and consideration into. Factors such as their personality, style of intervention, specialization and expertise, whether you prefer a male or female therapist, age, price, and location. Setting these factors aside, some basic elements you may want to check for are, whether you feel comfortable with your chosen therapist, that you feel listened to, the therapist is confident or capable in their work, that you feel able to share freely and trust it will be kept confidential, and ensure you are making measurable positive progress rather than regressing and getting worse. If you are uncertain about where to begin looking for a therapist you may find it helpful to speak to your doctor or hospital mental health department, contact your local church’s, community centre or community service organization, or search online Depending on your concerns or demographic, there are many great telehealth options available Finally, if you or anyone you know is at risk or a heightened state of distress, please contact a crisis hotline or call emergency services.

Full moon in Pisces

Your monthly guide to what's happening in the astrological world

Occurring at 7:59pm AEST at 17 degrees. The full moon in Pisces can have us feeling a little sensitive as it sits in the water sign of Pisces Remembering that the full moon is a Shedding and letting go of what is no longer needed. A time when the seeds planted during the previous new moon come to fruition and we shift into the next phase. This full moon highlights the polarity between the sun in the earth sign of Virgo, lover of order & systems, opposite our moon in the water sign of Pisces, our sensitivity, imagination and more passive nature. This axis calls us to seek balance between our daily activities, physical health and need for order (Virgo) and our Connection with our spiritual health, our creativity and imagination (Pisces)

10th September

As Mutable signs both virgo and Pisces are naturally adaptable but they . approach things in a different way, Virgo in a more practical, analytical and problem solving manner while Pisces needs time to go inwards and sit with their own intuition before taking action

Also those with strong 6 or 12th house energies This relates to having your Sun, Moon or rising sign here too.

Libra is the sign of harmony and is also the sign that represents relationships and how we relate to the ‘other’ When the Sun and moon sit together (New Moon) It is a time of new beginnings, setting intensions and planting seeds for manifestation.

29 Moon Musings September Lunation's

By Heidi Reeves Sol Rising Astrology

The balance here is about tapping into our feelings and using our inner guidance in a more practical way.

Virgo loves to be of service and feels connected when they can help others. Pisces is deeply compassionate and has a strong sense of working to help the collective so when these two energies work together we see big changes in the world and big shifts within ourselves too. Mutable signs will feel this one the most Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius & Pisces

26th September we see the New moon in Libra at 2 degrees at 7:54am AEST

Once you are clear on how you are currently showing up, It is time to visualise who you want to become? With the moon in Libra, we can feel a little more sensitive to the needs of others. This can show up in a positive way where we become more able to listen and communicate as we do the work on ourselves or it can feel distracting and lead to resentment and frustration, feeling our temper.

The key to using the Libra energy in this New moon is to really dive into yourself

This is a great time to think about how we show up in our relationships Are we sacrificing our own beliefs and values for the sake of harmony? Or are we so fiercely independent that we struggle to see the needs of another?

W hen you show up from a place of self acceptance then harmony and balance will follow. There are strong opportunities for diplomacy and peace with this New moon This New moon will be felt most strongly by those with strong Libra or 7th house presence in their charts but also the other Cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer and Capricorn This will be felt with Sun, moon or rising signs in these placements.

Who do you want to be and how do you want to show up?

The sun, our ego and how we look out to the world is holding hands with the moon, Our emotions, sensitivities and inward nature and so they are acting as one energy.
