Important Changes for 2011 Regarding Existing Out of Competition Rules

All horses nominated to stake races will be eligible for out of competition testing from the day of nomination. Several drugs were added to Out of Competition Testing for 2011 including Zilpaterol, Ractopamine or any similar agent. If you have any questions about any of these rules, please refer to Indiana Code 71 IAC 8.5-2-5 and 71 IAC 8.5-3-4. You may also contact the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at http://www.in.gov/ hrc/ or (317) 233-3120. How This Affects You • Once a horse is nominated to a stake race, he WILL be in the pool of horses used for selection of Out of Competition Testing. • If the owner/trainer has been contacted and notified that their horse has been selected for Out of Competition Testing, that horse must be produced at the track by the time provided by the IHRC. • If the horse is not brought to the race track within the allotted time, the horse will be ineligible to race in Indiana for one year. • The current trainer MUST be named at the time of nomination. If there is a change of trainer at any time, the new information must be forwarded to the Q.H.R.A.I. immediately. • If a nominated horse becomes lame, sick or for any other reason will NOT compete in the trials or finals, he must be officially scratched through the QHRAI (prior to being contacted by IHRC) or he will remain eligible for ALL Out of Competition Rules. • Except for stake races where high money earners are preferred, there will be no refunds of nominations or payments.

By signing and submitting this stakes nomination form, the trainer is hereby agreeing to abide by Indiana Horse Racing code. Once this nomination is received by QHRAI, you will receive a reminder for next payment date and a list of nominated horses. Sustaining payments must be submitted on time whether or not you receive this reminder. Nominations and sustaining payments will be added to the stakes purses. A 20% marketing and administration fee will be withheld from all open stakes nomination and sustaining payments.

Late payments - If nomination is missed - double the missed nomination plus the sustaining payment. Must be postmarked by the sustaining payment date. No late nominations or payments accepted after sustaining payment date.

All nominations and payments must be mailed to: QHRAI ATTN: Valerie Smith P.O. Box 307, Lebanon, IN 46052

For questions call: Valerie Smith: 812-223-2843 For updated lists: www.qhrai.net

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I

t’s officially Summer. If you’re like me, you’re spending every spare minute out in the barn, out on a horse or out doing chores. Anything to be outside this time of year. I’d like to say we’ve been showing so much I am ready for a break...but I can’t. We’ve had some strange weather and it has limited our hauling so far this year. How about you? We will be competing at our NBHA State Show this month and I think it will make less than ten shows so far this year. That has to be a record for us! County Fairs and fair food are calling my name. I got quite burnt out on the deep fried veggies a few years ago when we were on the rodeo trail. I think it has been long enough now that I can revisit those cravings and they will seem like a treat again, instead of like dinner. (Some of you know what I am talking about!) This month we would like to welcome back the IBRA! You’ll notice our IBRA News pages, including State News. This will be included each month for our barrel racing readers to stay up to date on the IBRA’s latest. We also are offering a special rate if you purchase your subscription through the IBRA along with your membership. We are excited to work with IBRA again! Indiana’s Quarter Horse Racing is in full swing and if you haven’t made it to Indiana Downs to watch the fastest horses on the track, you’d beter hurry. They will be finishing up the meet at Indiana Downs in mid-July and moving to Hoosier Park the beginning of August. Check out www. indianadowns.com or www.hoosierpark.com for specific racing information and dates. Our miniature donkey that we added to the crew at my house has got to be the cheapest entertainment that I have ever purchased. We have had more laughs out of his antics in the past month than I can count. Most of the laughing comes because he likes to run around our arena while we are riding horses. He became quite a nuisnace and we now have to lock him out. This ticks him off and he lets you know it, so now we laugh at him trying to get back in the arena! You can read more about “Seven” the donkey in Bella’s thoughts this month. I am sure she’ll be talking about him a lot in the future!! Until next month........laugh a little while you are counting your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk”

More great suggestions and recipes found on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy! (Just remember - The Horse Resource is not endorsing these “remedies.” We recommend that you consult your veterinarian before using any home remedy on your horse.) sassy&tessa Posted 2011-03-03 9:50 AM So I used the conditioner, mouth wash and baby oil on my horse’s tails and there has been an immediate difference. I love that remedy!!!! 2 fast 4 u Posted 2011-03-05 10:52 PM whenever one of my horses would come up with an abcess, all i do is clean it out real good then mix sugar and iodine together and cover the inside of their foot and wrap with duck tape!! then re wrap every second day it draws it out quickly TripleK Posted 2011-03-06 1:05 AM I recently had a veterinarian tell me to use sauerkraut on abcesses. He said to pack the hoof with it, then wrap with a diaper/duct tape or vet wrap. Have any of you ever heard of, or used it for abcesses?

horseysale Posted 2011-03-06 1:28 PM I’ve used sauerkraut for scratches, but never an abscess.... works great though. Prndi Posted 2011-03-06 2:27 PM This is a great liniment that jzthoward gave me the recipe for .... Best to sponge it on because in a sprayer the salt clogs it up. It is safe to wrap with and is GREAT for swelling or stocking up. In a gallon jug put about 2 inches of epsom salt in the bottom, then add: 1 bottle white alcohol 1 bottle green alcohol 1 bottle witch hazel 1 bottle white vinegar 1 bottle absorbine 1-2 tsp alum(find in the spice section of grocery store/ walmart) Fill the rest of jug with water and shake well before each use.

If you don’t shake it well you will see some salt residue on your horse but it won’t hurt anything. This linament is pretty much all I use except for bigeoil and bigeoil gel. luvinrunnin Posted 2011-03-06 2:56 PM What size bottles of each item??? Prndi Posted 2011-03-08 11:36 AM I’m not sure what size the original person used, but I just bought the regular size bottles of each. It ended up being about 1 1/2 gallons total. Spring Flooding Devastates Missouri Rodeo Town

Via www.iprarodeo.com - By: Tammie Hiatt -The town of Poplar Bluff,

MO is currently at the mercy of Mother Nature and she isn’t showing any signs of letting up. The community of 18,000 people is located near three rivers, the Current River, the St. Francis River, and the Black River which runs through town. The 15” of rain the area has been receiving has breached several of the levees protecting the town. “It is really bad here,” said Steve Johnson, chairman of the Annual IPRA Three Rivers Shrine Club Rodeo. “Right now, Clinton Park, where our rodeo arena is located is 8’ under water. Currently over one-third of our town has been evacuated. There are between 4,000 and 5,000 people out of their homes. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Black River Coliseum. The National Guard is here helping as well. It’s a very bad situation.”

The Championship is his 17th career win from 34 attempts. The winner’s share of $150,000 moves the lifetime earnings for Rylees Boy to $610,651. The win in the Remington Park Championship was the first in the race for the connections of Rylees Boy.

High Rate of Return

May 28, 2011 OKLAHOMA CITY- The biggest night of the 2011 Remington Park American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season did not disappoint as the 12-race program worth over $2 million in purses provided thrills all evening long.

Rylees Boy prevailed in the Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Championship, passing the test in winning a race comprised of the most accomplished group of runners ever to compete in a single event in Quarter Horse history. The Grade 1, $1,029,950 Heritage Place Futurity went to High Rate Of Return who stayed undefeated while beating heavy favorite Mighty B Valiant in the richest 2-year-old race of the year to date.

Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Championship

The dozen to load the starting gate had combined career earnings of more than $7.1 million and 102 lifetime wins between them with accolades galore including a pair of past American Quarter Horse Association World Champions, two millionaires, and the 440-yard track record holder. Rylees Boy prevailed under jockey Joe Ruiz, moving to the front of the group halfway through the 440 yards and holding off a furious rally by 8-5 wagering favorite Louisiana Senator to win by a head.

By winning the Remington Park Championship, Rylees Boy earns an automatic berth to the prestigious $750,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in southern California on Dec. 10. The fifth-place money earned by Stolis Winner, $7,500, moves his alltime leading total to $2,229,411.

Grade 1, $1,029,950 Heritage Place Futurity “I thought if he could get out of the gate, he’d have a shot.” Trainer Ed Hardy’s belief in High Rate Of Return came true in the richest 2-year-old Quarter Horse race of the year to date. The large sorrel colt flew from the starting gate and never looked back, leading every step of 350 yards from his outside number 10 post-position. He crossed the finish a half-length in front of heavy 3-5 wagering favorite Mighty B Valiant who settled for second, tasting defeat for the first time in four starts. High Rate Of Return stayed undefeated through three attempts. Owned by the LMR 2011 partnership of Austin, Texas, the colt was handled by jockey Larry Payne while covering the ground in :17.426 seconds over a fast track.

“The horse ran an awesome race,” Ruiz said. “He’s always been honest and he brought it all together tonight. He’s always battled and he always runs his race.”

Mighty B Valiant battled with the winner but could never get to even terms while taking second. DM Strait Up and Ranch Candy finished in a dead-heat for third, three-quarters of a length behind the top pair.

Owned and trained by Gerardo Ochoa-Pena of Laveen, Ariz., Rylees Boy won his Remington Park debut, coming into Oklahoma City off two consecutive wins including the Sunland Park Challenge Championship in New Mexico. The 6-year-old gelding crossed the finish in :21.188 seconds over the fast track.

High Rate Of Return was 5-1 in the wagering and paid $13.60 to win, $3.60 to place and $2.60 to show. Mighty B Valiant paid $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show. DM Strait Up paid $4 to show while Ranch Candy paid $2.20 to show.

Streakin Down was persistent in capturing third, three-quarters of a length behind the top pair. 2009 World Champion Freaky was along for fourth while 2008 World Champion and all-time leading money earner Stolis Winner was fifth. At 7-1 in the wagering, Rylees Boy paid $17.20 to win, $5.80 to place and $5.20 to show. Louisiana Senator paid $2.80 to place and $2.60 to

Bred in California by Double Bar S Ranch, High Rate Of Return finished his Remington Park season with three wins in as many attempts. His winner’s share of the Heritage Place Futurity, $432,581, catapults his lifetime earnings to $451,655. High Rate Of Return is by Mr Jess Perry from the First Down Dash mare Dividends Declared. His victory gives trainer Ed Hardy his second consecutive win in the Heritage Place Futurity, making him the

News first conditioner to win the race in two straight years since it became a million-dollar event in 2008. Hardy saddled Givingitaroyaleffort to the win in last year’s edition for LMR 2010, a similar partnership to this year’s group.

Grade 2, $285,735 Heritage Place Derby

Freighttrain B was expected to run his personal winning streak to six races in the derby, going off at 4-5 odds as the heavy wagering favorite. He had done nothing wrong in four prior starts during the season, including a win in the Oklahoma Derby in March and setting a 250-yard track record in late April. However, the race would never be his, instead going to another in the race from the same training barn. Eddie Willis saddled Freighttrain B stable mare Capo De Capi as well for the Heritage Place Derby and the pair lined up right next to each other in the starting gate in post-positions two and three. While Freighttrain B was away a tad slow, Capo De Capi rocketed from the starting gate under 69-year-old pilot Roy Brooks. The pair built a solid lead and then held off a late challenge from top qualifier Texas Icon to score by a neck. Owned by James Sills of Cedar Hill, Texas, Capo De Capi ran his personal winning streak to three straight. Prior to his current run, he finished second behind Freighttrain B in the Oklahoma Derby. The 3-yearold colt handled 400 yards in :19.758 seconds.

tempts. A 2-year-old Paint gelding by SF Royal Quick Flash from the Game Patriot (qh) mare Game Chicken, Flashthechicks earned $93,576 to run his overall money to $147,089. The Graham victory was the first in the race for all the connections of Flashthechicks.

Grade 3, $77,400 Remington Park Distance Handicap

The 2009 AQHA Distance Champion did not disappoint in the feature race of the season for the 870-yard turn runners. De Passem Okey had to work to take the richest distance race in track history, holding on to win by a head after enjoying a lead by nearly two lengths in mid-stretch. Owned by Steve Holt of Guthrie, Okla. and trained by Rodney Reed, De Passem Okey was ridden by G.R. Carter. He grabbed the lead immediately at the start, opened up a clear advantage in the stretch and then dug in over the final strides to hold off a charge from Docs Dusty Okie. Skyline Lover was third. De Passem Okey finished in :44.433 seconds for 870 yards, easily the top time of the season at the measure. Away as the 6-5 wagering favorite, De Passem Okey paid $4.60 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.40 to show. Docs Dusty Okie paid $3.80 to place and $3.60 to show. Skyline Lover paid $3.80 to show.

Overlooked by most in the wagering at 30-1 odds, Capo De Capi paid $62 to win, $19.40 to place and $8.60 to show. Texas Icon paid $4.20 to place and $3.60 to show. Barackazoom was another half-length behind in third and returned 11.60 to show.

Winning for the 12th time from 26 attempts, De Passem Okey won his third overall race at Remington Park. A 5-year-old gelding by Okey Dokey Dale from the Sir Richard Lewis (tb) mare Impassable Gal (tb), De Passem Okey was bred in Oklahoma by Dr. Eddie Moore. He earned $46,500 for the run to move his total bankroll to $221,233.

Bred in Oklahoma by P.K. Thomas & Kim Kubinski, Capo De Capi is by Corona Cartel from the Strawfly Special mare A Shot At Glory. He won his fourth career race and third locally while making $120,013 in the process to move his lifetime earnings to $203,470.

De Passem Okey gave Holt and Reed their first wins in the Remington Park Distance Handicap. It was the third time Carter has won the race as he found the winner’s circle with Noblesse Six (1998) and Carls Big John (1999).

The Heritage Place Derby win was the third for Willis who also won with A Real Man (2002) and Streakin Down (2010). It was the first Heritage Place Derby win for owner James Sills and jockey Roy Brooks.

Grade 3, $50,000 Junos Request Stakes

Grade 1, 246,242 Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity

Flashthechicks won his second major futurity of the season Saturday, scoring the Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity by a head over 7-5 wagering favorite Runaway Argus. The winner added the Graham to his score in the American Paint Classic last month. The 4-year-old mare is by Walk Thru Fire from the Tolltac mare Totally Illegal. She won $30,000 for the Junos Request to move her career total to $180,431. The win in the Junos Request is the first in the race for all of the connections of Illegal Fireworks. The race is named after the mare that was so dominant in many stakes races at Remington Park in its early years, including a win in the 1992 Remington Park Championship on her way to status as the AQHA Champion Aged-Mare that year.

Is There Really Such A Thing As “Normal?” I’d like to let you in on how the past month has went for yours truly. If there is such a thing as a “normal” month (let alone day) I have definitely NOT had one. It all started with the addition of a new creature here at the ranch. I was out minding my own business, probably catching mice or running off other unwanted varmits when I heard a commotion in the barn lot. A trailer had arrived and I heard all of the outside dogs carrying on as usual. (And of course the little black bark box had to put in her two cents.) I headed over to find out what all of the fuss was about. You see, a trailer isn’t that much news around here, but this smelled a little different than your usual everyday, run of the mill “horse” trailer. There was something a little different going on and was I ever surprised to find out what was about to be unloaded from this funny smelling trailer.

The fella that was driving the truck made his way to the back of the trailer and before he could open the door, I heard the most awful sound, something I had never heard before....and I’ve been a lot of places in all my dog years! I was actually a little scared to see what was going to emerge from this smelly...and now noisy trailer. At that point I was hoping that whatever it was....it was fond of Jack Russel dogs. When the man opened the door, there it stood.....a ball of fur about the size of the neighbor dog, Duke. I couldn’t see it’s eyes (to be honest, I wasn’t sure if it had any.) It looked a lot like a miniature version of the big horses that the people around here spend alot of time riding.... but there was no way they would be able to ride this scrawny thing! To top it all off it has the longest ears I have ever seen...and they stood up straight - all on their own!!! They didn’t fall over and flop around like Princess Annabelle’s ears always do. So strange! And then as I was checking out this odd little creature - from a safe distance of course - it let out that strange sound again. This time it sounded like “Yee Haw.” I figured maybe the critter thought it should try to fit in at the ranch and hollar like a cowboy. As I looked around, all of the people were laughing. I kind of felt sorry for the little guy, who’s eyes were now showing through the fur on his face. The lady of the ranch took the time to brush him a little and I heard her call him a donkey. Finally - the new critter had been identified....a donkey.....and a miniature one at that!! This should get interesting..... To be continued........ Until next month.... “Yee Haw!!!”

A New Power Generation (& An Old Fort Days Futurity Championship!)

Pictures Provided by Buddy Berry Photography I thought that this month I would write about a question that I hear often from barrel racers in the barrel futurity industry. “lance, we know you are the Dash Ta Fame guy, but what do you think the next great stallion in barrel racing will be?” I have heard this for several years with the clear and complete dominance in the barrel futurity world being Dash Ta Fame. It’s true, I myself, have won 14 World and Reserve World Championship titles on own sons and daughters of the great 21 year old stallion. I have seen a few different stallions hit once or twice, but truly nothing showing a new “ force to be reckoned with” potential. Until now.

our years ago Tres Seis popped up on the barrel racing scene as the sire of up and coming three year old Three Carat Diamond. A beautiful bay filly owned by Odillon Diniz and trained and ridden by Texas futurity rider, Latricia Duke. Three Carat Diamond scored a big check in her first competition ever, the Champion Of Champions slot race in Memphis, Tennessee. She continued her entire four year old season consistently in the money and laying the ground work for the amazing aged performer she has become. I was fortunate to watch and cheer for her as she won the Grand Prix race at Haras Raphaela showing her true talent to the entire Brazilian barrel racing community! My first experience training a colt sired by Tres Seis was nothing less than spectacular. Three Folly Six, a failed racing prodigy, owned by Bob burt of Sandy Utah, came to me with a specific goal. “See if she can barrel race, then we will retire her and breed her to Dash Ta Fame.” Barrel race she did! She had had extensive straight racing experience and was very aggressive when she arrived at the Graves Ranch. The Burt Family allowed me to take my time training her and we held her as a 5 year old futurity horse. Three Folly Six FIRST competition was the BFA World Championship Futurity in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Usually touted as the grand finale of the

American Barrel Racing futurity season, this was her first barrel race of her career. She placed in round two and made the finals and we were blown away! She continued her futurity season with a 3rd place finish at the Better Barrel Racers World Championships also in Oklahoma City, placing at the Wrappin 3 Futurity in Gonzales, Texas and IBRA Preferred shows in Cloverdale Indiana and Unadilla, Georgia. Three Folly Six won the prestigious Houston Livestock Show Junior Barrel Race in Houston Texas and was reserve champion of the Kentucky State Fair junior barrel race in Louisville, Kentucky qualifying her for the 2010 AQHA World Championship show in November. Three Folly Six posted the fastest time in the preliminary round and then came back in the finals to post the fastest time of the week and be named 2010 AQHA World Champion Junior Barrel Racing horse. A great thrill for my first attempt at training an offspring by Tres Seis! Turns out, my first wasn’t going to be my last! Seis So Sweet a buckskin daughter of Tres Seis came to the Graves Ranch by way of Ohio. A quiet, sweet, easy going filly with a great attitude. Amazingly willing to please, she was an absolute joy to train. Her first competition was the LG Pro Classic in Kinder, Louisiana where she WON the 2nd go round and placed in the average. A third place finish at the Dixie National AQHA show in Jackson, Mississippi qualified her for this years running of the AQHA World Championships in November as well. Seis So Sweet continued to advance and was named Reserve Champion of the Sand Cup Futurity in Pasco, Washington and placed across the

boards at the VGBRA futurity in Walla Walla Washington. Assistant Graves Ranch trainer, Chaz Maturin, age 19 took his turn on Seis So Sweet at the Josey World Champion Junior Barrel Race in Marshall, Texas and made the finals with her! But nothing the talented filly had done so far would compare to what she was about to accomplish. On May 26 Seis So Sweet posted the 9th fastest time at the Old Fort Days Futurity in Ft Smith, Arkansas with a 17.098. A good solid run that I was thrilled with. I must say that I was a little nervous as her trainer and jockey. This is the oldest, richest and most prestigious barrel racing futurity in the world and I had a real shot of winning. Before a ran, they announced a 16.986 was leading and I thought to myself, I guess we are going to find out just how fast you are little buckskin mare! She turned a perfect 1st and 2nd but fumbled a little off the 3rd. When I grabbed my whip and hit her, she showed me the same great strength and determination that Three Folly Six did the night she won the AQHA World Championship. When I crossed the time line, I heard the crowd roar and I knew she did it. Seis So Sweet posted a 16.866 to be named the Old Fort Days Futurity champion and claim her $55,908 winners paycheck. So with that said, I now have an answer to that question. “Who is the next great sire of barrel futurity horses?” For me, I know it’s Tres Seis. He is an amazing stallion and Im proud to be associated with him. He IS the new power generation.

Story & Pictures Provided By : Josey Ranch

Josey students from 13 continental states and Hawaii found their horse-family once again this May 6-8 as they converged at Josey Ranch for the 18th Annual, 2011 Josey Reunion 4D Barrel Ranch, where $64,550 in prize money alone was awarded to 397 contestants. “Josey Ranch was geared up to have a ball,” said Martha Josey. “The Josey staff was excellent from the announcers to the tractor drivers and from all our great help.” All of the 397 former Josey students entering the 2011 Josey Reunion 4D Barrel Race were champions at the start. Determinedly, these horse and rider partnerships raced their way to the top of the standings toward glory and prizes. Each of these teams were supported by family and fans as thousands surrounded the arena and stayed for a packed weekend of barrel racing, events and to browse sponsor tables and tents. From start-to-finish they envisioned their shot at cash prizes as well as the Champion Trailer from Big Tex/CM of Mount Pleasant, Texas: Champion Buckles from Neil and Kris Suard of Black Star Ranch [Houma, LA.]; Reserve Champion Buckles custom designed and by Bob Berg. Saddles from Circle Y and Billy Cook were also awarded. Finals on Sunday revealed that among those vying for the top spot was this year’s 1D Champion Abby Pursifull, 18, of Arthur City, Texas, on Shortoaks Truckstop, who won the much coveted, Big Tex CM threehorse trailer and a beautiful prize saddle from Billy Cook of Sulphur, OK for her top time in finals at 16.309. A consistent team, they had a first-round time of 16.561 and second-round time of 16.425. Abby Pursifull also won the Josey Ranch College Scholarship awarded after the 2011 Josey Reunion’s Sunday church service, which included special prayers by request from Reunion attendees. All 120 finalists received a Finalist T-shirt from Purina. Benjamin Beall of Winnsboro, LA on Red Native Chinook earned 2D Championship and was awarded a Circle Y saddle for their final time of 16.812, and 3D Champion was Lisa Mitchell of Marshall, Texas, with “Benz” for a finals time of 17.323 to take home a Circle Y saddle. Betty Thompson of Winona, MS, garnered the 4D Champion spot riding Flying Heart Guy for an 18.314 time for a prize Billy Cook saddle. Thursday night’s pole bending Champion Raelee Self with “Freckles” from Powderly, Texas, was also awarded a Billy Cook saddle for her 20.784 time. Second place in each of the four divisions was awarded a Bob Berg Trophy belt buckle and a pair of Twisted X boots. Twisted X representative, Sandy Brazile, was at the ranch for the weekend. Third

place in each division took home a set of Priefert retractable barrels. Senior Champion Suvoy Rosser of Hugo, OK on “Little Okie Dash” won a Circle Y saddle, and Reserve Senior Champion Andrea Whiteside of Kilgore, Texas, on “The Right To Run” took home a custom made saddle rack from Jan Siglar. “Doll” or Kicken Doll, a 27-year-old mare from Marshall, Texas, and ridden by Kaitlynn Woodman won Oldest Horse. Bolders Runner, a 17-year-old mare, was named the annual “Sonny Bit O’ Both Horse with the Most Heart” along with rider Sheryl Boone of Waskom, Texas, and received sponsored prizes from Dr. Stephan Sigal of Sigal Heart Center in Tyler, Texas. Fastest paint horse of the weekend, Whitney Wells and “Paint” of Nacogdoches, Texas won a pair of Josey Pro Kold Boots. Erin Anderton was the top ticket seller for the event and earned a prize package including a free 2 1/2 day Barrel Racer clinic and a breast collar and a $300. off certificate for a Martha Josey Ultimate Saddle as money raised through tickets was turned into many great prizes for Josey Champions. All of these Josey Champions deserve grand congratulations, but Josey Ranch and its mission for generating Champions could never happen without the continual support from corporate, national and local sponsors. “We love having people joining us on the ranch in Marshall, Texas,” said R.E. Josey. “The contestants really work hard to win that trailer from Big Tex/CM Trailers, and they love the goodies they all get from saddles to many prizes.” Corporate sponsors stay and spend lots of one-on-one time getting to know the contestants, their families and Josey staff. Offering more than a friendly face for guests as well as customers were Christie Foster and Scott Campbell with Purina; David Fillebrown with Priefert; Dale Steege with United Vet; Stanley Saunders with Circle Y; plus Randy Dominio, Mitzi and Jeremy Long, along with Joe Mack Duncan from

There is a spot clost to the heart of Josey Ranch, its staff and students for these and many more year-round supporters. Priefert’s sponsored program Friday night with Thinking Horseman Guy McLean of Queensland, Australia, was a powerful reminder to riders and trainers alike of the depth of connection and communication they can share with their horses. He wowed audiences at Josey Ranch with his trained four-horse and bull-whip show, remarking that “this area reminds me so much of home in Queensland.” Marshall, Texas, is the “Birthplace of Boogie Woogie” and the city’s artist in residence, Omar Sharriff, performed a range from this popular piano music as contestants and guests enjoyed a fish fry by Catfish Express. Cowgirls kick up more than dust, they also kick cancer as many participated in the wear pink day for breast cancer on Friday. Programs outside the arena were as heartfelt as they come with Sandy Dunham of Marshall, Texas, sharing the testimony of her battle with breast cancer and how she found relief by barrel racing throughout her treatments. Good Shephard Hospital of Longview, Texas sent their van with the newest technology aboard to provide onsite Mammograms. The First Go Round, Pink Barrels were auctioned off with the proceeds going to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Houston, Texas. High bid of the $2500 was from Scott Andrews, owner of S&J Contractors from Winnsboro, Texas. Recognition, Prevention and Treatment of Heat Stress in Horses

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

Most of us think that our horses become dehydrated after a show, trail ride, or long work session, but did you know that many of them start out dehydrated before the saddle hits their back. Living in hot climates is not just tough on us; it’s tough on our horses. High heat indexes can cause your horse to sweat excessively. Through sweat they loose water and electrolytes, mainly sodium, potassium, and chloride. Now you may be giving your horse some wonderfully flavored electrolyte with their feed, but be careful. Unlike other animals (humans, dogs, cats) sugar does not enhance the uptake of electrolytes in equines and unless you read the label, sugar may be the majority of what you are feeding. So what is the best electrolyte mixture for your horse? 1 Tbs Table Salt (Sodium chloride) combined with *1Tbs Light Salt (Potassium chloride) per day, in the feed, for the average horse will supply the electrolytes he needs to replace what he looses in his sweat. Horses primarily cool themselves with evaporation, convection, conduction and avoidance of radiation. Since evaporation is the most important route of cooling for the horse, we need to make sure they have plenty of cool fresh water to drink so they can replace all the water that they loose by sweating. A horse standing in a pasture can easily drink twenty gallons or more of water per day. This is especially

Page 34

Summer is officially here and in most parts of the country it gets pretty hot during the day. The heat is especially brutal in the southern part of the country. It is not unusual to have heat indexes past the 100 degree mark. All this added heat in comparison to the winter, spring and fall give our equine athletes, broodmares and pleasure horses more opportunities to have heat related problems. Summer also happens to be a time when racing, horse shows and other equine events are going full throttle. Broodmares are hopefully getting heavy in foal by this time so they have another source of heat growing in their bodies. Make sure these ladies have plenty of shade. Treating hyperthermia or overheating is much more difficult than preventing it so we will start off discussing prevention then go to recognition and lastly discuss treatment.

true of a horse being hauled in a trailer load of several horses. All the horses cumulative body heat can really heat up a trailer so make sure the air flow is very good especially if you are hauling during the day. If at all possible haul your horses at night after the sun goes down. Have enough drivers that you can switch drivers and keep all the drivers fully awake and refreshed. Try to haul in trailers

with insulated roofs. Make sure your trailers are well ventilated, ventilated, ventilated! Make sure each horse is offered water on a regular basis every few hours during the trip. As you can see, horses standing in a pasture or riding in a trailer can have a high demand for water but a horse can loose as much as 10-15 liters of water per hour in humid conditions with only moderate exercise. If fluids are

not replaced it can lead to cardiovascular and thermoregulatory instability. Sweat must evaporate to be effective in regulating body temperature. When relative humidity is high, sweat evaporation is severely limited and your horse’s body temperature will not be regulated properly. So what do you do? Always provide fresh water. If trail riding, consider a bucket of fresh water and a bucket of electrolyte water. You can use the same mixture listed above for a 5 gallon bucket. If you and your horse are competing, consider hyper-hydrating your horse before you leave and during competition. Hyper-hydration

is simply giving your horses fluids before they need them. Studies have proven that being hyper-hydrated before you trailer and/ or compete will enhance performance and cause less stress on your horse’s body.

his blood pressure will be low. This will result in pale mucous membranes and the gums will have a capillary refill time of greater than two seconds. If you pull up his skin into a tent it will stay in the tent position for 2 seconds or more. His rectal temperature could be 104 or higher. He will probably act depressed and very lethargic. If he shows these signs then get an equine veterinarian to check him out very quickly. In the mean time get him in the shade and have a fan blowing on him and hose him all over his body with cold water. Offer cool water to him to drink. When the veterinarian examines the horse he may need intravenous fluids depending on how dehydrated he is.

If you know your horse is as well hydrated as you can get him then take advantage of convection. Set up fans around the stall, barn or riding arena or put him in front of a fan after he comes off the race track or out of the barrel arena. If you are through riding or exercising When the veterinarian gets to your horse he him then use conduction to help will probably pull some blood and do a few the cooling process. Hosing tests to quantify the amount of dehydration so cool water on a horse’s body he can calculate the amount of fluids to give. and legs will help cool the core There will also probably be a test performed body temperature. Even if you that checks his electrolyte levels and acid/ are not through competing or base levels. Electrolytes will be added and working him you can put cold medications to correct his acid/base balance as water on his legs. The blood dictated by the blood tests. Your veterinarian vessels are closer to the skin in will probably start IV fluids immediately the legs and therefore the blood upon arrival. Depending on the severity of the is easier to cool. Some trainers situation, the horse could be feeling pretty good believe that cold water put on a within the hour or if treatment was started too horse’s hot body will shut down late the outcome may not be too good. Upsets the blood flow to the skin. This to a horse’s system like this many times set is incorrect. It is well proven that off the cascade of events that cause laminitis a horse’s core body temperature and colic. Those two are another story for a is easier to maintain within an different day. Preventing heat distress is truly acceptable range with cold water baths to the a time when an ounce of prevention is worth a legs and or body during rest periods or after pound of cure. intense exercise. The cold water allows the heat of the horse’s body to be absorbed Stephen D. Fisch, DVM into the water as it runs off AVS Equine Hospital located at his body. Recognizing a horse in heat distress is fairly easy. Since his cardiovascular system will be in distress due to his blood being in his skin trying to cool his body then

Cotton Candy, Anyone?

Photos by Double J Saddlery

Up first is the black & the beautiful, this saddle is a true knock out for those who want to stand out in a crowd. It’s one of Double J’s latest models, made with Black Herman Oak leather & hand painted with silver on the Texas Poppy Pattern. The seat is made with black Cayman Gator. This saddle reminds me of something that Roy Rogers would ride around in.

Stunning Stingray Another stunning saddle, this Pozzi Pro is a rainbow of colors. It features a rainbow stingray seat & stunning multi colored Swarovski crystal conchos. The hand tooling on this saddle is very fun as well, a cross dot floral pattern. This saddle is perfect for you cowgirls who can’t commit to just one color, have it all & look great. If you are interested in trying out a Double J saddle before you purchase it that can be arranged. They have an awesome program that lets you completely test drive a saddle for both you & your horse.

Turquoise looks good on everyone Turquoise is a summer color that looks good on everyone. This new Pozzi Pro with a Turquoise Elephant seat is a looker. It features chestnut basketweave tooling & pretty star conchos.

Page 36

I’ve saved my absolute favorite saddle for last; I think it looks like cotton candy but better. It’s made for the absolute girly girl. The seat is dyed turquoise & pink ostrich pops out in all of the right places. The light oil carving on the saddle alternates with turquoise & the conchos are filled with pink & turquoise Swarovski crystals. Saddle possibilities are endless with Double J; I could spend hours browsing through their saddles & dreaming up designs. The staff members there are super friendly too, I’ve also been told there are a lot more saddles that aren’t even listed online. It was overwhelming enough to narrow it down to four favorites, I can truly say they have a saddle for everyone.

Cowboy Boots Of the Month I’m Cowboy Boot Obsessed.

Photos by Old Gringo

Welcome to my second cowboy boot pick of the month, they’re new, they’re hot & sizzle like summer. If you are not familiar with my blog, Horses & Heels, I feature a pair of cowboy boots every Monday & am showcasing the month’s absolute favorite here. I’m craving turquoise & the vivid details of this pair of Old Gringo Marrion styled boots with a snip toe. I found them at Sheplers & knew I had to share these. Turquoise is a perfect summer shade & it matches just about every color you pair it with. All Old Gringo boots are handmade & detailed to perfection, the stitching of the white flowers cover the foot & upper shaft. The brown leather color could accurately be described as brass with lots of “wear marks” that give this boot a nice vintage finish. The snip toe compliments the rustic vibe & looks superb.

"Meet the girl behind Horses & Heels" I’m Raquel; I live out there where the city meets the country. One day I’m wearing stilettos, the next day it’s spurs. I have an obsession with cowboy boots, Christian Louboutin, cosmetics and cooking. I have been riding since I was two-years old, have competed in just about every discipline & now I focus on barrel racing. I love speed & athletic horses, not to mention lots of sparkly things.

Horses & Heels is a trendy & practical blog. Keep up with the latest fashion, equestrian trends & learn how to become the perfect kitchen host. While some people deem country life to be dull & boring; Horses & Heels is shattering the myth with a unique intertwining of city & country life. Learn how to keep your horses & yourself dressed to impress.

If you are not familiar with Old Gringo’s brand allow me to give you a (short) lesson; these boots will come slightly crumpled & will already feel broken in when you put them on. How many steps does it take to make a pair of Old Gringos? They follow a 110-step process. Getting back to the fashion side of things, turquoise always looks sharp with white, so pairing these with white jeans or a sundress would allow the boots to steal the show. I’m cowboy boot obsessed.

FASHION SECTION

Well, I hit the rodeo trail in January 2011 and I got the first few out of the way to knock off the winter dust....I didn’t realize how much dust I had, but I continued on the path of Dreams and Goals of Rodeo. Let me tell you.....the road taken has been interesting....but a lot of fun!

I have great sponsors this year to help me get down the road. Those include, Circle Y Saddle Company, Cowgirl Tuff Company, Brooke Palmer of State Farm Insurance and Gray Auto Brokers of Greenfield, IN.

Cowpoke Kendra’s s and Goals in Western Trends Dream

This month I wanted to talk a little about Cowgirl Tuff Company. They are a great company with awesome clothes that started in 1999. Cowgirl Tuff Co. has been great to me! The jeans are such a great fit, especially when you’re competing. When you get in the saddle they stretch enough so you don’t feel like you are going to rip your pants out. (I’m sure that everyone has felt that way at least one time!) Cowgirl Tuff jeans are all I wear now...they are so comfortable and they look good with boots, a belt and a long sleeve shirt for competing or just a T-shirt and sneakers for relaxing. They are an all around mainstream fashion jean that every cowgirl would love! I love the motto that the owner of Cowgirl Tuff Co. has lived by: “Even though you’ve been bucked, kicked, bit and stomped...NEVER GIVE UP!” I think every Barrel Racer has a saying that they live by...mine has always been “Live Life to the Fullest” - because you never know what tomorrow will bring!! I truly believe that if your attitude is good, you believe in yourself and you and your horse work as a team.....your Dreams will become a reality!! So Always Follow your Dreams!! Find out more about Cowgirl Tuff products at www.cowgirltuffco.com I have a little poem that I have carried with me ever since I started running barrels and its called “I Will Work for You” A barrel horse’s thoughts...by Carol King of Van Meter, Iowa.

Kendra Gilbreath grew up showing cattle and sheep and eventually made her way into the rodeo arena as a barrel racer. She is married to her husband, Steve, and they have one son, Kolton. Kendra has worked in the Western Retail Business for most of her adult life and enjoys keeping with the hottest styles in western wear. She is currently a Manager and a Buyer for Cowpokes Work and Western Store in Anderson, IN and helps in keeping the hottest trends and styles in clothing, boots and western wear on the store showroom floor.

I will work for you, just treat me right. I was bred and born to run, but not to be abused. God put me in your hands for safekeeping. We can be winners together. I will do my part, I only ask that you: Communicate with me, I know sometimes you think I should understand what you want, but I don’t. Please try to talk with me in a way that I can comprehend. Not by using whips and spurs or bits that look and feel like devices of medieval torture. The flesh in my mouth is soft, like yours. My sides and back are sensitive, so much so that I can feel a small fly when it lands on my skin. Show me the way through kindness and sensitivity....and I will work for you. Dance with me, I am a creature

of habit, not a conclusive thinker. Be consistent when you are showing me what to do. You confuse me when you send mixed messages. Learn to sit on my back with your weight centered, so that I am not thrown off balance. I can run that way. Instead of jerking my mouth, sit deep in the saddle so that I may take my cures from your seat and legs. Then, when you turn your body, I will turn with you. If you send you energy forward, I will run. Bring it back, and I will slow. The two of us in perfect harmony. Make me your partner, and I will work for you. Don’t treat me like a machine, I am a living thing made up of bone and flesh and blood. My needs are very similar to your own, But I must rely on you for my very survival. If you are cold, I am cold. If you

are thirsty, I am probably am as well. When you put on your jacket, blanket me to protect from the wind’s chill. If the day is hot offer me a cool drink. My mind and my body must be conditioned so that I can perform my best. Don’t ask me to run the same pattern over and over. I get sore and tired, and I can’t think anymore. After a hard workout, I need time for my muscles to cool. I know you want to visit with your friends, but I need attention. Loosen the cinch and walk with me instead of tying me to the trailer, my sides heaving. Fresh water, hay and grain are all I require, but don’t make me guess what time dinner is coming. To perform my best, I need to rest where it is safe, warm and dry. Occasionally I like to

lie down, so please, don’t put me in to bed in a wet, mucky stall. When I am sick or hurt, don’t make me perform. Give me the time I need to heal. Take care of me as you would your child....and I will work for you.

A three inch plate and 9 screws later she’s put back together and should be shooting by the end of July. Thanks to everyone who sent a prayer or email her way wishing her a speedy recovery. Well that’s all for now. Keep those cylinders spinning and God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bryan McDonald members had a great time at Brown County State Park. The weather was hot but there was plenty of water in the creeks for the horses to drink and plenty of time to stop and rest if needed. Thursday night was a short late night ride with an all day ride on Friday and Saturday with everyone packing their lunches in saddlebags and eatin on the trail. Saturday night we had a pitch in dinner with Bryan and Russell deep frying chicken, potato wedges, mushrooms and pickles. The sides and deserts everyone brought were delicious. We had 15 members attend and will be planning another outing in October and hope even more members can join us. Bryan and Kathy McDonald were invited to a Boy Scout jamboree in Osgood Indiana to put on a shooting demo for 150 scouts and their parents. We had a great time but unfortunately Kathy came off her horse and broke her right arm just above the wrist. The scouts were worried

Clint’s Graduation was held June 5, 2011 at East Central High School.

Clint is shown above with friends and family celebrating his recent graduation from High School. Congratulations, Clint! We are proud of you!! Clint is an 18 year old recent graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Member Spotlight

Maci Zimmerman

This month’s Spotlight focuses on a 9 year old cowgirl from New Ross, IN. Maci Zimmerman is the daughter of Sherri and Brodie Zimmerman and a great sister to her brothers, Skylar and Cooper. Maci Jo just finished her 3rd grade year at North Salem Elementary school where her favorite subject is Art because it allows her to be creative and it lets her let out what she likes to draw.

Maci Jo is currently competing in her third season of IJRA. She and her horse, Bunny, have been a tough team in their 3rd grade year of IJRA. I asked her a few questions and this is what she had to say.

Why do you like to compete in IJRA rodeos? I e ric red vo Favorite food – chicken fla like IJRA cka Fli Favorite movie because it’s a great rodeo tire En the Radio by Reba Mc and they let you finish when Favorite song – Turn On to Kings Island or Cedar Point ly go you mess up and they teach Summer plans – Hopeful you what you don’t know.

s

te Favori

What is your favorite event? Goat Tying because it’s straight and fast and the goats are easy to flank. (I just have to add that Maci recently took almost 3 seconds off

her personal best goat tying time when she tied her goat in a 11.446 second run at La Porte! That is a tough time in any of our age divisions! Way to go Maci!) Do you have anything you do that brings you luck? I don’t have anything lucky but I do have a ritual before I compete. I close my eyes and clear my mind, my legs get nervous and that helps me get a good run. What is your goal for this year? My goal for this year is to make the State Finals in all my events. What is your favorite IJRA memory? The first time I rode my sheep and got a score was really exciting! As soon as the buzzer hit, that sheep bucked me off and I hit my head on a barrel! Do you have any role models? Katie George is my role model because she really taught me how to goat tie and that is one of my best events. She has always been there for me and to help me practice. What do you want to be when you grow up? A small animal and equine vet.

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

RUSTLER REVEALED Jake saddled his hoss Looin` into the dark night Mumbled to himself Twig somethin` just a’int right

He gave Twig some iron The sun was on the rise That’s when he seen him A cowboy with flamin` eyes

One other thing pard I know a better way We can get`em to the ranch And it will save us a day

Red you a’int the first To try to steal the herd I know a liar Cause I know Paw’s Holy Word

Climbed into the saddled Gave ol` Twig a pat Said pard between me and you I can smell a rat

Jake drew down on him Had him in the sight The stranger shouted, don’t shoot I’m not here for a fight

Jake cocked his rifle Asked, what is our brand Red swallowed hard Starin` at the iron in Jake’s hand

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

They headed toward the herd So dark you couldn’t see Jake filled his hand With his Winchester 1873

He said my name is Lou I’m workin` for the spread It’s good to meet you Everyone calls me Red

You see Red you’re a` rustler I know every hand on the ranch Paw mounts us on good horses And our brand is an olive branch

When he topped the hill The herd was not there The sound of cows runnin` And dust filled the air

The ramrod sent me here Said to bring the herd on in Yep we’re workin` together He said with a devilish grin

But what gave you away Was what you just said They’re a’int but one way So get off of this here spread

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

w/ Christa Conway

The Devil is a Liar... a warning like a roar, there would be no way in the wild that any prey would be caught off guard and turn into lion lunch. Likewise, we as Christians shouldn’t be caught off guard. We shouldn’t be freezing in fear when we hear that roar. What we should be is PREPARED. Prepared for the attack....we know it is coming. The bible tells us in James 4:7 to “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” How do we resist the devil? God gives us instructions throughout His word, too many to go into detail. But, right there in James we see that we are to first - submit to God. (Submit means to yield or to surrender. To surrender yourself or give yourself to God.) One other section of scripture that is very helpful when faced with how to be prepared for when the Devil is attacking, accusing, or tempting is found in Ephesians 6:10-17:

T

he Devil IS a LIAR! And don’t you forget it. The Word of God refers to him as the accuser, the tempter and the prince of demons. He is “your enemy” and “he prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” I have read that last part (taken from 1 Peter 5:8) about the roaring lion many times before....I think I have even written about this scripture before in the past. Until today I had not thought about that scripture literally enough to really break it down. I had always thought about a lion attacking it’s prey and that’s where my “visual” of this scripture has stopped. What I had not thought about before now is that Peter refers to him as a “roaring” lion. What I find interesting about this is that in the wild - at least on every wildlife show I’ve ever seen - a lion does not go around roaring while searching for prey. They stalk....they slink and they hide in the weeds....but they do not roar right before they attack their prey. Interesting, huh? That means that if he is prowling around and roaring at the same time....prey would not be so easy to come by. He is looking for someone to devour, not sneaking up on them. His prey should hear him coming. We should hear him coming and be warned well in advance that it is him. We just have to be aware of who he is. He is a liar. He is an accuser. He is a tempter. He is the prince of the demons and he is a LIAR. If you have not been aware of this before, be warned. He is out there prowling around. He is looking for someone who will be easy to devour....someone who most likely has frozen in fear after hearing his threatening roar. Like a “deer in the headlights” reaction, some people just freeze when they come under attack. No defense, no offense, they just give up. I can guarantee that in the wild if a zebra heard a lion roaring as he was prowling nearby, the zebra wouldn’t stand around and wait on the lion to attack. Zebra - exit stage left.....GONE. With

Page 48

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: This is one of my favorite scriptures. When it is broken down piece by piece, it instructs us on how to be prepared and how to “stand against the wiles of the devil.” Don’t you love it? I find it even more exciting that all but one item listed is a defensive component...from the helmet to the shield. The only “weapon” listed is the sword - the WORD of GOD. The only weapon we need to go on the offensive is the scripture that God provides. How awesome is that? So the next time that devil is telling you lies, attacking you or your family, accusing you, tempting you, condemning you....put on that armor. And by all means don’t hesitate to whip out that “sword” and start swinging away!! God instructs us to do so. On a side note....verse 15 talks about having your feet shod with the gospel of peace.....I don’t know about you, but I am a stickler for making sure my horses are shod right....looks like God wants us to be as adamant about preparing ourselves with the gospel of peace.

Until next month.... Practice with that Sword!! Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Page 49

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Mystery of the Month....

This month’s Mystery Family Photo was taken in the mid 60s (we think.) We’ll need as much information as we can on this picture. Help us out with names of people and horses, as well as location. This family remains very active in both the barrel racing AND horse racing world to date. There is a good possibility that you may even see some of the family this month at Indiana Downs for Quarter Horse Day and some at the Hoosier Horse Park for the Indiana NBHA State Championship show.. Correctly identify our mystery cowboy the two cowgirls accompanying him. Give us as much information as possible to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Please send us your photos from the past.... we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

June’s Mystery a Tough One..... ......We Need A Winner! Last month’s Mystery Cowboy is shown in the first picture turning a barrel at a show somewhere in Ohio. We are not sure of the location, maybe you can help us with that portion of our mystery. The inset shows him picking up a second place ribbon at the same show. The year was approximately 1966. This cowboy and his wife met showing the horses and continued to show horses at contesting events and rodeos and had a son who followed in their footsteps. Recently they are enjoying their grandchildren and you may run into them at a barrel race together. Email us or call with your answer and you could be our June winner!

Do You Still Like Playing? Help Us Out..... We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 59
