LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

I

t’s been a very limited show season for us so far. We have had a lot of irons in the fire and have done a lot of travelling, just not with the horses. We were from the Pacific to the Atlantic and the Gulf for volleyball, then to Lake Michigan for work and finally Lake Cumberland for a “break.” Then we made it back home again to Indiana. In that time frame we had a graduation and an Open house, two trips to the hospital and a couple mares that needed bred. That was just from Memorial Day to the 4th of July! Needless to say, I was ready for a STAYcation. I needed time to get caught up on work, riding my horse and on sleep!

I’ve had just under a month to recuperate and finally have a things (almost) caught up in the office. I wonder what I’ll do when my kids are both out of the house. I’ll probably be bored! Until next month.......spend time with your family - horseback or not.....and every time you get the chance, count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Barrel Talk - Hot Weather Care @ Races If you have visited “Barrel Talk” on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. If you are not familiar with this “on-line hot spot,” be prepared to read interesting comments from other people in the horse world. We try to include topics that might be helpful and/or meaningful to our readers. To read more visit www.barrelhorseworld.com. Be advised that advice found below is not endorsed by The Horse Resource. Always check with your vet before starting any treatment. TACKyPaints What are some things you do to keep your horses cool at a race when it’s hot? Supposed to have heat index of 103 (high of 91) this Saturday and we have a race to go to. Just curious what everyone, including the pros, might do to keep your equine partners comfortable when the temps go up? rodeomom3 Get there as early as necessary to tie in the shade, plug in a fan if that is an option, light warm up, extra salt and water, hose down through out the day. If there is no shade to tie in I won’t go. Griz I always pack rubbing alcohol and pour it down their back when I am done running - along with a sponge bath. OhMax In the same boat as we head out on the rodeo road again. We will try to find all the shade we can - but so will every other trailer. I haul a hose so we can hose off frequently. Add electrolytes to water and monitor intake closely, each horse gets their own bucket at the trailer so we can monitor individually. Quick warm ups and long cool downs. fulltiltfilly I stay home if its that hot GoMistyGo I do actually excercise my horses durnig the heat of the day so they (and I) can be better prepared for when we have to be at a barrel race

at 3 in the afternoon, in August, in South Texas. And of course everything that was mentioned above. Very light warm up. FLITASTIC My vet cautioned me on forcing a horse to eat salt, electrolytes etc. They know how to balance their chemicals best. She told me to keep it “ Offered” but NEVER forced. When I haul I always have salt on a rope I can tie up for them but NEVER put it in feed or in their water. dRowe This summer, I started turning my horses out at night and keeping them up during the day with fans on them. BIG MISTAKE. Not only has it wrecked havoc on their feet (drastic moisture changes and the contracting/expanding of going from soaking wet grass to sawdust every morning), but now my horses can’t even stand outside during the day without sweat dripping down their faces and their chests all sweaty. So next summer they will stay out all day, and I hope that helps a LOT! TessBelle I never feed salt. Like someone said above. They know what they need. I have added powdered gatoraid but that’s mostly for flavor if one isn’t wanting to drink but that’s mostly weekend shows. For day shows I put out water. If they drink it they get more if not I don’t worry about it. If a horse is hot and thirsty he will drink. If he isn’t he won’t. You can’t force it. Some just don’t drink. I have one that will drink 3

buckets a day but one doesn’t drink a half of a bucket a day. Murphy - RE: fulltiltfilly Ditto. No reason to risk safety with that type of heat. Mine just sweat standing in the pasture. WrapN3MN Heat Index over 100 = I stay home. Turn the fans on in the barn (they come and go as they please) and make sure they have clean water. BarrelRacing4Christ My horses are turned out 24/7 with shade they can get under if they want to and I also work mine during the heat of the day. Take a pop up shade canopy with you and keep your horse tied under it if possible. Make sure you’re offering plenty of water AND hay. I also take gatorade with me and my horses love drinking it when I mix a little in with their water. KindaClassey shade of some sort - tree or pop up canopy. Fans can run off the generator. A mixture of wintergreen alcohol and rubbing alcohol as a cooling spray. Water hanging in front of them at all times. Light warm up and bucket baths after if no access to a hose. Mine stay out 24/7 with shade if they want it - so they are used to heat. I also really weigh weather it’s worth going when it’s that hot. Sometimes it isn’t worth the risk. vjls - RE:GoMistyGo when i was able to ride thats what we did 6pm off work barn we go

9 head long trot 2 miles breeze on thurs yep they sweat hose off me too we have rin horses at mitchell 107 heat no shade talmadge the hayes terri abunch of well know barrel racers personally i thonk they are to babied turn out let them be a horse mother nature take of them but that my opionion if i could ride and have horses today i would be the same way let them be a horse Bear I worry more about some riders than the horses. Stay cool and hydrated, and if you start feeling sick, don’t ignore it. cowgalsissy I choose early or late races that provide shade and water (for drinking and hosing off) I wont go if we are not in shape and only run one time (no exhibitons or second classes) I wont travel long distances away because of the temp in the trailer. My main goal is to keep us hydrated and cooled off asap. I like to hose off twice: once right after saddling and once after her breathing is normal. Ashley Lynn The heat index is over 110 here now... I won’t hardly go to day time shows anymore. We went to Waco last weekend- thanks to an air conditioned coliseum and fans in the stalls! My horses stay turned out. They only stay in the stalls to eat. We keep plenty of fresh water available and salt blocks out. In my opinion there is NO barrel race worth mine or my horses safety in this heat! Read More at:

News - Article By Brandice Heseman Breaking All the Ranks at 70 Years Young “I just take my time and bring them through the ranks.” – Bobby Stivers This is a quote I found while searching Stivers’ name on the internet. I find it quite fitting to a man that I’ve always known through results, seeing him walk the alley’s, watching him run amazing runs that I strive for and of course his line of saddles and bits. I’ve never actually spoken with him til here recently. Just from the few times I’ve had the honor of speaking with him, he’s given me insight that in his words from this weekend, “Ya know, I’ve been doing this a really long time. It’s not rocket science.” Words that are so simple when you hear them but not ever realized til someone says them to you. This past Mother’s Day weekend the IKI put on a speed show at the Gibson County Fairgrounds in Princeton, IN. It was the biggest show we’ve had to date. Satruday being our biggest day with 55 Open Pole runs and 177 Open Barrel runs, 557 total runs came through our little county arena. With Tim Oxby in the cab of the tractor keeping our ground in tip top condition, our fastest run came on Sunday! Ole Bobby came in on Honor Bound Ghost and took us all by surprise! Well, not really by surprise. When you hear certain names you always go to the fence. At 70, Bobby and Ghost ran a 14.319 and took the win in our Open Barrel class!

Brandon Knight on Git Go Gone took the Open Poles Friday and Saturday and had a coulda, woulda, shoulda run on Sunday. He ran the fastest pole time of the weekend on Saturday with a 19.321, which I just found out is a team best for them! I think it’s easy to see that they are primed and ready for the National Pole Bending Championship show coming up June 2-4!

We may be a small county but we draw some of the best competition in the area. We pulled competitors as far away as Tennessee! Our family friendly fees and big added money paired with the best ground/office crew and tractor driver keeps people coming back to our show every year. We appreciate all of our help throughout the weekend and all of our competitors!! You guys really made it a great weekend!! Keep an eye out for IKI Contest Events on Facebook for our show next year!! QHRAI NEWS - Stories by Tammy Knox, Photos by Linscott Photo old daughter of Brimmstone won the $36,000 Speed Sale Stakes last summer before ending the season with an impressive two-length victory for Cunningham in allowance competition. The start in the Greene trials was her first outing since October. “This is her first start back after knee surgery,” said Cunningham, who earned Leading Quarter Horse Owner honors in 2016 at Indiana Grand. “I didn’t run her in the Futurity at the end of the season last year but ran her in an allowance the same night and she won easy.”

QUARTER HORSE RACING

In the final trial of the night, QHRAI High Point Two-Year-Old Colt of the Year HH Kentucky Krome headlined the field and didn’t disappoint, rallying to the win by a neck over Sixes Royal Opener and Harold Collins. Hez So Rare and Cesar Esqueda rounded out the top three.

First Cucuy Quickest in Harley Greene Derby Trials SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 19, 2017 – First Cucuy and jockey Jose Davila turned in the fastest trial to lead the way to the $75,000 final of the Harley Greene Derby set for Saturday, June 3. The race will be part of the first of six all-Quarter Horse racing nights at Indiana Grand for the 120-day racing season. First Cucuy topped the list with a time of :17.784 seconds in the second of three $5,000 trials Friday, May 19 to set up the final. It was all First Cucuy and Jose Davila from start to finish. The duo broke from the inside post one and had a clear path the entire way to reach the finish line in an easy three-quarter length win over First Special Jess and L.D. Martinez. Kid Cartel and Cesar Esqueda finished third. First Cucuy, a surprise winner, paid $13.00, $7.00, $3.60 across the board. The three-year-old son of Jazz Be First is owned and trained by Sacramento Chavez. “I trained this horse (First Cucuy) last year for an owner and he decided to sell all of his horses,” said Chavez. “I wanted to keep this one so I bought him myself. We took him to Oklahoma this winter and he got a little sore and couldn’t race, but I gave him plenty of time to get well before today’s race. That was my only concern is that he might not be ready. But I was very pleased with him today.”

HH Kentucky Krome completed the 350 yard dash in a time of :18.017 seconds with Jockey Oscar Macias aboard for the first time. It was the son of La Jollaroid’s third career win in nine career starts and the first career win for Macias. The Mexican-born jockey is spending his first year at Indiana Grand and most recently rode in Colorado before relocating to Indiana. The list of qualifiers for the Greene Derby final, with jockey and time, includes: First Cucuy (Jose Davila, :17.784); First Special Jess (L. D. Martinez, :17.900); Kid Cartel (Cesar Esqueda, :17.926); HH Kentucky Krome (Oscar Macias, :18.017); Sixes Royal Opener (Harold Collins, :18.059); Sixes Turn (Reynier Arrieta, :18.087); Powerfull Stone (Cesar Esqueda, :18.201); Keen Liaison (Ronald Hisby, :18.211); Dreamers Liaison (Cristian Esqueda, :18.261); and Hez So Rare (Cesar Esqueda, :18.288). Of the 10 finalist, Cunningham will saddle three for the final (Kid Cartel, Powerfull Stone and Hez So Rare). Trainer Erin Thompson will have two in the final (Sixes Turn and Keen Liaison).

Big Matchup in First Quarter Horse Stakes of the Season SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 26, 2017 – It will be a battle to the wire between two standout Indiana sired Quarter Horses Saturday, May 27 when the field enters the starting gate for the eighth running of the $84,200 Born Runner Classic. WH Design by Dash and Beach Cartel, who shared honors in 2016 as the Quarter Horse Association of Indiana

First Cucuy earned his second career win in 10 career starts. He will head into the Greene Derby final with more than $25,000 on his card. In the first trial, Powerfull Stone and Cesar Esqueda rallied from the outside to snag the win by a nose in a time of :18.201 seconds. Keen Liaison and Ronald Hisby finished a close second on the outside over Dreamers Liaison and Cristian Esqueda on the inside for third in the tight three-horse photo. “I thought she (Powerfull Stone) ran pretty good today,” said Esqueda. “She broke strong and kept going.” Owned and trained by Tony Cunningham, Powerfull Stone was a $7,000 yearling purchase out of the Speed Sale in 2015. The three-year-

Stories by Tammy Knox, Photos by Linscott Photo (QHRAI) High Point Colt/Gelding of the Year, will be battling it out in the first Quarter Horse stakes race of the season at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. Beach Cartel, with jockey Rodney Prescott aboard from post nine, has been tagged as the early favorite in the race over WH Design by Dash, who will be ridden by Oscar Macias from post six in the 10-horse field. The two have already matched skills once this year with Beach Cartel getting the slight edge over WH Design by Dash, winning by the margin of a head in allowance competition May 5. The Born Runner Classic will be the second start of 2017 for both horses, who are now five and six-years-old respectively.

timated post time for the race is 9:49 p.m. EST. The race will set the stage toward the first all-Quarter Horse racing night of 2017 the following Saturday, June 3 featuring the $75,000 final of the Harley Greene Derby. A total of six all-Quarter Horse racing nights will be held during the season featuring the sprinters on June 3, July 8, Aug. 12, Sept. 16, Oct. 7 and Oct. 21. All events will be held on Saturdays with a first post of 6:05 p.m. EST.

WH Design by Dash Regains Title in Born Runner Classic SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 27, 2017 – The class of the older Indiana sired Quarter Horses at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino were on track for the eighth running of the $84,200 Born Runner Classic Saturday, May 27. After finishing in the runner up spot last season, W H Design by Dash regained his title in the event, posting a three-quarters of a length win with jockey Oscar Macias aboard. Starting from post six in the 10-horse lineup for the 400-yard dash, W H Design by Dash got away from the gate clean and was in mid pack for the first half of the race before emerging in the center of the track with a big late kick to stroll by his opponents on his way to the win in only his second start of 2017. Owned by Julia Rae Martin, the six-year-old son of Brimmstone stopped the timer in :19.913 seconds. Heza Beach Bum and Rolando Pina finished second over The Cartel Concept and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez for third.

Owned by Julia Martin and trained by Paul Martin, WH Design by Dash has similar statistics with nine wins in 32 career starts and earnings in excess of $250,000. The six-year-old Brimmstone gelding, bred by Greg Morrison, will be looking for revenge in the Born Classic Stakes. Beach Cartel won the 2016 edition of the Born Classic over WH Design by Dash with a short margin of one-half length at the finish line. WH Design By Dash was the winner of the race in 2015.

With now wins and several seconds and thirds on his card last season in seven starts, W H Design by Dash was discounted by the betting public, paying $10.40, $5.60 and $4.40 across the board. His win in the Born Runner Classic boosted his career earnings to more than $300,000 for his career. “The difference in this horse (W H Design by Dash) from last year to this year is I think we have the horse in better condition,” said Trainer

A third horse could play into the mix of the Born Runner Classic. Beach Bum Eddie, who starts from post seven for jockey Cesar Esqueda, comes into the race for his first start of 2017. The four-year-old Escondido Beach gelding was named 2016 QHRAI High Point Three-Year-Old Colt/Gelding and will step up for his first test against older horses. Owned and trained by Tony Cunningham, Beach Bum Eddie has six wins in 13 starts and has only finished out of the top three once in his career. The Born Runner Classic is slated as the final race on the program Saturday at Indiana Grand as Race 9. Es-

Paul Martin. “My wife, Julia, thought he was a little heavy last year so we put a little more training in him this year. He will eat anything you put in front of him and still does, but he has more work in him this year.” The win in the Born Runner Classic is the third stakes win for W H Design by Dash, who has run all 33 of his lifetime starts at Indiana Grand. It is safe to say he has earned a forever home at the Martin residence. “We were actually going to retire him (WH Design by Dash) at the end of last year,” said Martin. “Julia and I rode him around this winter just for pleasure and he was feeling good and looking good. We took him in and had him x-rayed and he came back clean. The vet told us we would be crazy not to put him back in training. The game plan was to run him a couple times this year and see how he did. We will see how he comes out of this race before deciding but if we run him again, we will probably be looking at the (Bob) Woodard (Stakes).” The $75,000 Bob Woodard Stakes is slated for Saturday, Aug. 25.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 3, 2017 – Stone Cold Leader and Rolando Pina earned the honor of turning in the fastest time for the Gordon Mobley Futurity Trials Saturday, June 3 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The duo covered the 300-yard dash in a time of 15.506 seconds as they head toward the $150,000 final slated for Saturday, June 17. Starting from post five in the second of four trials on the all-Quarter Horse racing card at Indiana Grand, Stone Cold Leader proved to be too much for his opponents to handle, gaining the lead midway through the race and coasting under the wire by one and three-quarter lengths over Beach Mercedes and Rodney Prescott, the second fastest duo of the trials. The Ebony Hare and Giovani Vasquez-Gomez rounded out the top three. Owned by Patrick Richardson, Stone Cold Leader was the heavy favorite of the field, returning $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10. The Indiana sired two-year-old son of Brookstone Bay is now two for three in his brief career. He is trained by Joe Davis. The second fastest trial of the evening was awarded to Kitty Sixup and Ronald Hisby. After finding their best footing early on, Kitty Sixup came rolling into contention late in the race to grab the win on the outside by one and one-quarter lengths over DNA Dalesblackbueaty and Prescott. Precious Stone and Benjamin Martinez rallied closely for third.

For Macias, the win in the Born Runner Classic aboard W H Design by Dash will always hold special meaning. After winning his first ever race earlier this month, this race marks his first career stakes win. The race also marks a new stakes record for the Born Runner Classic, eclipsing last year’s best time of :19.969 seconds set by Beach Cartel and Rodney Prescott to put Macias and W H Design By Dash in the record books with their win in :19.913 seconds.

Keen Liaison Wins $98,200 Harley Greene Derby

lic. She is now two for three since joining their stable under the direction of trainer Erin Thompson. “This is a nice mare that has been training really well,” said Thompson. “She tries her hardest every time.” Thompson received Keen Liaison from the Blacks last fall after their purchased her from a sale. They sent the sorrel filly to Erin in Florida for a few months before returning back to the Midwest for the racing season at Indiana Grand.

“She (Keen Liaison) always breaks good, and finishes strong,” said James. “She won her first start for us and came back and finished second in the trial. We were just glad to make it to the final. This is a whole lot of money.” James wife, Connie, added, “It’s enough for us to bring another horse here.”

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 3, 2017 – After qualifying in eighth place during the trials, Keen Liaison and Ronald Hisby put their best effort forward to win the $98,200 Harley Greene Derby at Indiana Grand Saturday, June 3. The race, now in its third running, is named after Greene, who worked for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission for several decades as a farm inspector and was one of the individuals who were instrumental in preserving Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana.

Keen Liaison now has two wins in four career starts with purse earnings in excess of more than $70,000, adding more than $58,000 to her tally with her win in the Greene Derby. She is a good fit with Hisby, who is new to Indiana Grand this season. The Peruvian-born jockey rides both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses at the Indiana oval. “She breaks good and we got good positioning tonight,” said Hisby. “She really finished strong, too.”

Starting from post seven, Keen Liaison and Hisby got a clean start from the gate and maintained positioning in the early stages of the 350-yard dash. Halfway through the event, Hisby began to see a response from the three-year-old daughter of Sixes Liaison and the duo found themselves in a close battle near the wire with Kid Cartel, ridden by Giovani Vasquez-Gomez, and First Cucuy and Jose Davila. It appeared that Kid Cartel might get the advantage of the three horse photo from the inside but it was Keen Liaison who had the strongest finish, taking the title by the margin of a nose over Kid Cartel, who was just a head in front of First Cucuy. Paying $44.40, $17.20 and $10.20 across the board, Keen Liaison was greeted by her owners, James Black and his wife, Connie, who appeared just as surprised as the betting pub-

Apollitical Regard Steps Up Late in $123,900 Jaguar Rocket Futurity

Starting from the outside post 10, Apollitical Regard was not the first horse to get noticed out of the starting gate. The two-year-old daughter of Apollitical Jess had to get her feet underneath her in the first few strides before finding her groove. Galvan kept the sorrel filly at task and encouraged her for speed and she delivered. Apollitical Regard came flying on the end of the race, just in time to nab Be Afraid and Cesar Gomez, the race favorites, right at the wire. Jetta Rising and Cesar Esqueda finished third. “I was so lucky to have such a good handler (in the gate) tonight,” said Galvan, who has been riding for 18 years. “She can get tough in the gate but she broke perfect tonight.” Apollitical Regard was overlooked in her trial at odds of 18-1 and was

overlooked in the final, paying $$18.40, $5.40 and $4.60 across the board even after turning in the second fastest time of the trials behind Be Afraid. It was only the third career start for the Matt Frazier-trained freshman, who boosted her career earnings total to more than $75,000 with the victory. “I thought we had a live horse coming into the final,” said Frazier on Apollitical Regard. “She stumbled coming out of the gate and I thought we were in a world of trouble, but she was trying to break and she recovered. At that point, I was hoping for third. She’s really starting to impress me. We laid a good work into her before the trial and you could see in the last 100 yards of her trial that a light bulb seemed to go off. She’s a bit of a handful at times but she seems to be figuring it all out now.” Frazier, who has had a long standing partnership with Jockey Shanley Jackson, commended Galvan on the work he has put in for the stable at Indiana Grand. He was just as excited for Galvan to win the biggest race of his career as he was for the winning connections of Apollitical Regard. “Juan (Galvan) has worked really hard for us this year, and I’m really happy for him to get this win,” continued Frazier. “Shanley has always been a big part of our team and we miss him being out with his injury, but Juan has really picked up the torch.” The win in the Jaguar Rocket Futurity Final was by far the biggest win of Galvan’s career. The Mexicanborn jockey rode a few horses at Indiana Grand in 2013 before returning last year to secure a top 10 spot in the standings. He has multiple stakes wins over the course of his career but never any that carried a purse over $75,000.

Stone Cold Leader Impressive in Gordon Mobley Futurity

He is trained by Joe Davis and owned by Patrick Richardson of South Carolina.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 17, 2017 – Everything asked of Stone Cold Leader to this point in his career has been accomplished and the two-year-old son of Brookstone Bay didn’t disappoint in his latest task. Ridden by Rolando Pina, Stone Cold Leader was a comfortable winner in the eighth running of the $184,000 Gordon Mobley Futurity Final at Indiana Grand Saturday, June 17. Starting from a prime post three in the field of 10, Pina only had to worry about possible bumping at the start as the freshman rocked out of the gate with authority. Once the coast was clear, he was on cruise control, running to the wire under wraps for Pina in a time of :15.469 seconds in the 300-yard dash for registered Indiana sired two-year-olds, a new stakes record. Stone Cold Leader was two and one-quarter lengths ahead of The Ebony Hare and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, who won the tight photo over Sixes Loaded to Fly and Rodney Prescott for second.

“I met Joe (Davis) at Hialeah through some friends and we connected immediately,” said Richardson, who works for NuCor Steel Berkley as a crane operator. “We had a horse with him last year that didn’t race too well, so we went to the sale last fall and actually had another one picked out, but we didn’t get him. So this one (Stone Cold Leader) was our second choice and he’s been a dream come true. I have a small farm in South Carolina so it’s nice to get this win. I have a lot of support that drove up here with me tonight, including my little girl, my fiancé, my parents and friends. It makes the trip worth it.” Richardson had to work when Stone Cold Leader ran in his trial June 3 during the first of six all-Quarter Horse nights of racing for the 2017 season at Indiana Grand. He hopes to work it out where he’s off to watch his next start coming up at Indiana Grand in July. Because he’s so far away from Indiana, Davis keeps him updated on the horse’s progress at Indiana Grand.

“Before the gate opened, I was just hoping for no interference,” said Pina. “What I was thinking is what came out perfect in the race. This horse (Stone Cold Leader) did it all on his own. He has always done everything on his own to this point.”

“He’s (Stone Cold Leader) probably the soundest horse I have in the barn right now,” said Davis, who is leading the Quarter Horse trainer standings this season with 10 wins already. “He needs the least amount of work of anything. He’s not the sharpest breaker, but he’s a racehorse. He may belong outside Indiana but there is a lot for him to do here. We are looking forward to his next start.”

The heavy favorite of the field after turning in the quickest time in the Mobley Futurity trials, Stone Cold Leader paid $2.40, $3.00, $2.10 across the board. With only four career starts to his credit now, he has three wins in four outings for purses in excess of more than $125,000.

Richardson, Davis and Pina were also joined in the winner’s circle by longtime Indiana Quarter Horse owner and breeder, Mark Michel of Pierceton, Ind. Michel has four mares on his farm in northern Indiana and this particular family has already fared well for his operation.

“We raced his mother, Sheza Classy Leader, right here at Indiana Grand,” said Michel. “So far, she’s had several runners and this horse (Stone Cold Leader) has a threeyear-old full sister (Sheza Classy Bay) in Wednesday. We have a yearling filly out of this mare right now at home and we will most likely take her to the sale in the fall.”

Jess Kool Lady Quickest in Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby Trials

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 20, 2017 – My Royal Wagon and Indiana Grand’s all-time winning jockey Harold Collins stopped the timer in record setting time Tuesday, June 20. The duo covered the 400-yard allowance dash in a time of :19.357 seconds, establishing a new track record at Indiana Grand.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 24, 2017 – Jess Kool Lady and Giovani Vasquez-Gomez turned in the quickest time of two trials on the Saturday, June 24 racing program at Indiana Grand. The duo covered the 400-yard dash in a time of :19.551 seconds, winning by open lengths.

Starting from the center of the nine-horse field, My Royal Wagon broke quickly and was in contention for the lead from the start. The four-yearold PYC Paint Your Wagon horse increased his speed with every stride, fending off TJ Jess A Leader and Jesse Levario at the finish line by the margin of a head to win the race. Jess A Dollar and Jose Davila rallied up for third. Owned by Brian Gunder and trained by Jeff Yoder, My Royal Wagon was the second favorite of the field behind TF Jess A Leader, paying $7.60, $3.40, $2.80 across the board to his backers. The Oklahoma bred now has two wins in three starts for 2017 and five wins lifetime with purse earnings in excess of $170,000. It was the third time for Collins to be aboard My Royal Wagon, who finished third in the $1 million Rainbow Stakes at Ruidoso Downs at the age of two. My Royal Wagon was making his first start under the conditioning of Jeff Yoder in the record setting race. Indiana Grand is preparing for the second of six all-Quarter Horse racing nights Saturday, July 8. The evening will feature an appearance by Denis Blake, longtime Wrangler Q-Racing Ace based out of Texas. Blake will provide in-depth racing analysis during the night and will also provide a free Quarter Horse tip sheet available to racing fans throughout the evening. He will also assist with the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) booth that will provide $2 wagering vouchers to the first 100 fans as well as other giveaways during the evening, including QHRAI T-Shirts. Two Quarter Horse stakes will be included on the program, featuring the ninth running of the $40,000 Bradford Stakes and the seventh running of the $50,000 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby. The program will also include trials for the Heartland Futurity and the Blue River Derby, which are slated with finals on Saturday, July 29.

Starting from post three in the 10-horse field, there was close quarters on the inside, but Jess Kool Lady was so quick out of the gate, she was able to shoot out in front of any bumping and grab an impressive early lead. The three-year-old Apollitical Jess filly was unstoppable, at one point leading the way by nearly five lengths ahead of the pack before coasting under the wire for the victory by three and three-quarter lengths. American Hustler and Jose Ruiz rallied up for second followed by Inundated and Juan Galvan for third.

The three-year-old son of Freightrain B motored down the track with authority for the win in a time of :19.838 seconds, winning by the margin of one and one-half lengths with James Flores aboard. First to Fall and Cesar Esqueda finished second just a nose ahead of Favorite Sissy and Alonso Rivera. Trained by Larry Sharp, Tommy the Train is how five for nine lifetime. SR Shambles Impressive in Heartland Futurity Trials

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 8, 2017 – Three trials including 24 horses vied for a spot among the top 10 Saturday, July 8 to advance into the final of the $50,000 Heartland Futurity. SR Shambles and James Flores took the spotlight as easy winners of their trial, posting a time of :15.443 to lead the list of finalists. The trial was part of a special allQuarter Horse racing night at Indiana Grand, which is one of six nights during the 2017 racing season dedicated to the sprinters. Starting from post eight in the third trial of the night, SR Shambles was out of the gate quickly and in command of the field. The freshman son of Desirio rallied out in front of his opponents and as the 300-yard dash continued, his dominance was even more apparent, coasting under the wire a one and one-half length winner. All American Ease and Juan Galvan edged out Miss Kips Prospect and Oscar Macias in the photo for place. Owned by Cynthia Allen and trained by Jeannette Hoover, SR Shambles paid $3.00, $2.60, $2.10 across the board as the heavy race favorite. He will no doubt head to the final as the one to beat for the title of the $50,000 Heartland Futurity. In other Heartland trial action, the duo of Trainer Joe Davis and Jockey Rolando Pina swept the other two trials with wins from Mighty B Grateful and Might and Right, the second and third fastest horses of the trials. Sicario Tops List of Blue River Derby Trials

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 8, 2017 – Sicario and Jockey Cristian Esqueda made it a perfect three for three on the year with the fastest time in the Blue River Derby Trials Saturday, July 8. The trials were part of an evening dedicated to the sprinters and Sicario will advance to the $100,000 final of the Blue River Derby Saturday, July 29 with his time of :19.897 over 400 yards. Starting from post three in the nine-horse field, Sicario didn’t have the greatest start but recovered quickly to keep himself in the race. Dnachrystalsfighter and Rodney Prescott got the early calls in the 400 yard dash but in the end, it was Sicario who kicked into gear to win the race by a half-length over Dnachrystalsfighter. Sixes Royal Opener and Jose Santos rallied up nicely for third. Owned by Adriana Almanza and trained by Julio Almanza, Sicario paid $3.20, $2.40 and $2.10 across the board as the heavy favorite. The Indiana bred son of Jumpn Chic is now four for eight during his career with a bankroll of more than $50,000, all accumulated at Indiana Grand. In the other Blue River Derby Trials, last year’s Indiana freshman champion CB Come Fly With Me was strong under the direction of jockey Rolando Pina. CB Come Fly With Me, owned by Carolyn Bruce and trained by Joe Davis, earned her first win of 2017 and will be primed and ready for the Blue River Derby Final. Tommy the Train Derails Fiield in $81,500 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby

QHRAI NEWS

Flores, who is based in Oklahoma, is currently ranked second in the nation for purse earnings this season. He’s only one of two jockeys that have accumulated more than $1 million in purses so his schedule keeps him on the road. Last fall, when Tommy the Train made his first trip to Indiana Grand for the Governor’s Stakes trials and final, Flores had other commitments for the Texas Classic and Trials and couldn’t accompany the horse to the Hoosier State. Besides those two wins Tommy the Train picked up with David Pinon filling in for Flores, all of his victories have been with Flores.

“I have been running horses from this family all the way back to this horse’s great grandmother,” said Sharp, who hails from Joplin, Mo. “This horse is a half-brother to Sudden Sensation (Grade I winner) and his mother (Okie Dokey Annie) was also a nice race mare, winning the Kansas Futurity (Grade II). I sold his mother to Duane Murphy and he raised this horse. But he didn’t want a gelding and priced him at $15,000. My son and nephews were looking to form a partnership so they bought him. He’s turned out to be a good investment for them.” SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 8, 2017 – Despite being undefeated over Indiana Grand’s racetrack, Tommy the Train was not receiving the early focus in the $81,500 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby Saturday, July 8. But after the race was a different story. The three-year-old gelded son of Freighttrain B rolled over his competition with an open length win, establishing a new track record in the process for the 400-yard dash. An easy winner in his trial, Tommy the Train met up with his biggest rival, other trial winner Jess Kool Lady soon after the start of the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby. Both horses went to battle and proved it was a two-horse race to the finish. Jockey James Flores seemed to find another gear with Tommy the Train late in the race and scooted away for the win by two and one-quarter lengths over Jess Kool Lady and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, clearly second best in the race, finishing two and one-quarter lengths ahead of the rest of the field that landed Inundated and Juan Galvan in third place in the photo.

Tommy the Train has run his entire career at 350 yards, with the exception of the trial for the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby. Sharp knew his horse was ready, but had some concerns about the added distance.

QUARTER HORSE RACING

Tommy the Train is now a perfect four for four at Indiana Grand, with two of those wins in stakes action. He is trained by Larry Sharp and owned by the partnership of Brant and Jon Barley and Brad Sharp. Tommy the Train now has six career wins in 10 career starts with more than $150,000 in career earnings.

“I wasn’t sure if he (Tommy the Train) could handle 400 yards, but it didn’t seem to bother him,” said Sharp. “He’s always very calm, even in the barn, and nothing seems to ever bother him. He eats and sleeps a lot. We will bring him back up (to Indiana Grand) this fall for the Derby (QHRAI Derby) in October.”

Tommy the Train stopped the timer in :19.324 to post a new track record, lowering the previous record set by My Royal Wagon and Harold Collins earlier in the year in a time of :19.357. He paid $8.40, $2.60, $2.10 across the board. “He (Tommy the Train) is a pleasure to ride,” said Flores. “I had the luxury of helping break this horse as a yearling and he’s always been one of my favorites. He’s fun to ride and I want to thank the partnership for flying me up here to ride him.”

feet up underneath him and then I did my thing and went to work. I really want to thank Ron (Brown) for putting me on this horse. If he hadn’t put me up on him I wouldn’t have had a horse in this race at all.” Completely overlooked by the betting public, WH Kenny G paid $75.20, $28.40 and $18.20 across the board for his win. The four-yearold son of Gold Medal Jess is now eight for 18 lifetime and boosted his career earnings over the $200,000 mark for owner Robert Ray and Ron Brown. Brown serves as the trainer of the former Indiana bred freshman standout. “He (WH Kenny G) had a really good two-year-old season and he raced well last year, he just didn’t win any of the big ones,” said Brown. “Everything just came together tonight. He is as good right now as a man can get him. There were some big dogs in this race from Oklahoma and Texas, so that’s what makes it even more special to win this race. It is also a big boost to the Indiana breeding program for an Indiana bred to win an open stakes race like this.” Brown was in the winner’s circle minus one of his supporters. His partner, Robert Ray, has been battling some back issues and couldn’t attend the race.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 8, 2017 – A talented field of horses from out of state assembled at Indiana Grand Saturday, July 8 for the 19th running of the $52,900 Bradford Stakes. However, it was an Indiana bred that took home the title in the race as W H Kenny G and Jockey Harold Collins stunned the crowd with the upset win in a time of :19.778. Starting from post two in the 10-horse field, WH Kenny G was in the mindset to win the race from the start. He began his battle shortly out of the gate and vied for the lead throughout the entire 400-yard dash. Horses were spread out across the track at the finish and there was no clear-cut winner until the photo revealed WH Kenny G as the victor, winning by neck over TF Jess A Leader and James Flores. Jess A Dollar and Jose Davila was another head back in third. A total of two and one-half lengths separated the top eight horses at the wire, showing how tight the finish was in the end.

“He (Robert Ray) is always here for the big races,” said Brown. “I’m sorry he couldn’t make it tonight, but I’ll bet he’s doing back flips now.” Brown spotted WH Kenny G as a yearling in the local sale and purchased him for $10,000. He immediately began paying dividends during his two-year-old season, ending the year with a win in the $193,500 Miss Roxie Little Futurity. Brown hopes to continue the momentum with WH Kenny G in the next round of stakes action at Indiana Grand. “We will get him ready for the Hoosier Park Classic,” added Brown.

“Ron (Brown) told me before the race to ride him like I own him,” said Collins, Indiana Grand’s all-time leading Quarter Horse jockey in wins. “We had to wait in the gate a long time and we really owe a lot to the handler. He was able to back him up and get his legs set underneath him and we got a great start. I just let him do his thing and stayed out of his way until he got his

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 17, 2017 – The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) held their annual Youth Racing Experience event Saturday, June 17 at Indiana Grand. The program designed to teach 16-18 year olds about Quarter Horse racing drew a total of 13 students from both Indiana and Illinois for the day-long event. Students arrived at 8 a.m. and were informed of different aspects of racing, including guest speakers that talked about veterinary work, race marketing, security, track maintenance, and other facets of the racetrack. After lunch, the group took a tour of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission offices and received honorary licenses for their time at the track. They also got an in depth look inside the Quarter Horse barn and talked to several trainers about conditioning the sprinters for racing. The afternoon session was followed by a test on what they learned throughout the day. The top two scores from the tests will advance to the national Youth Racing League hosted by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) during the Bank of America Challenge Championships set for mid October at Prairie Meadows near Des Moines, Ia. In addition to the trip, the students advancing to the final will also receive a $1,000 scholarship from QHRAI. “This will be the hardest year we have ever had to choose the winners,” said Vickie Duke, coordinator of the event for QHRAI. “All of these kids came in here so knowledgeable and their attitudes about life were unbelievable. They were very appreciative of the entire experience and it will come down to the test to determine who advances. We will send two to the final, but I’m hoping AQHA will allow us to send four since we had some kids from out of state in our local event.” Illinois does not offer a Youth Racing Experience program so two students made the trip all the way to Indiana Grand to participate in the program. The program at Indiana Grand was the closest for the students to attend with hopes of advancing onto the final round in October.

Students attending the event came from all across Indiana. Most had prior knowledge of horses, but very few had any experience around racehorses, including Alyssa Witherington of Norman, Ind. “I actually found out about this program (Youth Racing Experience) on Facebook,” said Alyssa, who is active on the Quarter Horse barrel circuit in Indiana. “Getting to meet the trainers and having full blown conversations with them was one of the best parts for me. We were able to see the inside story into Quarter Horse racing.”

Alyssa’s father, Jerry, brought his daughter more than two hours up to Indiana Grand for the program. He noted they have been to Indiana Grand before, but in a different capacity. “We come up to the races a lot, but we are always spectators,” said Jerry. “We’ve been running barrels for years and years but this is the first opportunity we have ever had to get behind the scenes. We’ve got one now that is born to be a runner, so we hope to get him in training for next year.” Alyssa hopes to advance to the next round of the Youth Racing Experience. She is headed into her junior year at Medora High School and has a strong interest in learning more about Quarter Horse racing. The Youth Racing Experience was part of an evening that included two Quarter Horse Futurity finals. The 15th running of the $123,900 Jaguar Rocket Futurity and the eighth running of the $184,000 Gordon Mobley Futurity highlighted the racing program. Students were able to go back to the barn before the races and shadow the trainer of a horse in one of the two stakes. Alyssa was assigned to Matt Frazier, who conditioned winner Apollitical Regard in the Jaguar Rocket Futurity, which was an added bonus for the day spent at the track for her and her father. Students will be notified within the next 10 days as to which will advance to the final round in Iowa this fall. Last year’s second place finisher in the local program, Hunter Duncan of Terre Haute, Ind., was also in attendance this year to give some insight on the final. She finished second overall at the 2016 Youth Racing Experience, which was held at Los Alamitos in Southern California. Along with her second place finish, Hunter picked up an additional $2,000 scholarship courtesy of the AQHA.

QUARTER HORSE RACING

Kim Standeford Selected as QHRAI Youth Racing Experience Winner SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Saturday, July 22, 2017) – The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) has a history of having a strong presence in the national American Quarter Horse Association’s (AQHA) Youth Racing Experience program. The national winner in 2015 was Holly Kiess of Fort Wayne, Ind. Last year’s Hunter Duncan of Terre Haute, Ind. finished second in the national program. Indiana will be represented by Kim Standeford for the 2017 edition of the Youth Racing Experience to be held during the Bank of America Challenge at Prairie Meadows Racetrack in Iowa in mid October. Standeford was one of 13 students age 16-18 that competed in this year’s event at Indiana Grand, held in mid June. The students spent the day at the track, learning about the care and training of Quarter Horses. At the conclusion of the event, students were tasked to take an exam which solidified the winner of the contest. As a result, Standeford earned a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of QHRAI and a trip to the national contest where she will have the opportunity to earn an additional scholarship from AQHA as programs from across the nation come together for the national competition. Standeford, a 2017 graduate of Hamilton Heights High School located just north of Indianapolis, is headed to Purdue University this fall. The Atlanta, Ind. native hopes to earn a degree in marketing and would love to tie that into horses in some way. Standeford is no stranger to Quarter Horses. She started out showing locally on the 4-H circuit which led her into the barrel racing ranks. She and her horse, CDF Queensville King, won the 1D Indiana Barrel Racing Association (IBRA) State Youth title in 2014. Standeford also earned a scholarship from the Business Professionals of America this past year. She served as president of her school’s chapter and received an Indiana State Officer Leadership Team Scholarship. Cassandra Trumbower of Fort Wayne, Ind. was the runner up in the QHRAI Youth Racing Experience event at Indiana Grand. Trumbower has been active in 4-H with showing and judging horses for the past eight years. She won first place in the 4-H Horse and Pony Show at the Indiana State Fair in 2016 with her Pinto mare, Flashy Black Beauty. Trumbower attended the Indiana Grand event with her aunts, who have recently bred a Quarter Horse mare to an Indiana sired stallion in the Indiana Quarter Horse racing industry program. The family hopes to get involved in racing in the next few years.

girls, and they were a great group of kids,” said Vickie Duke, secretary for QHRAI and coordinator of the local Youth Racing Experience event. “In fact, two of the girls were from Illinois as that state does not offer a Youth Racing Experience program. It was really hard to judge the students this year. They were chosen by their test scores, their interaction during the day and their interviews. It was really close this year as several of the students really stood out.” The 15th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, Oct. 28. Racing is held Tuesday through Friday at 2:05 p.m. EST with Saturday racing beginning at 6:05 p.m. About Indiana Grand Racing & Casino: Indiana Grand Racing & Casino holds multiple awards from industry publications for customer service, entertainment, gaming and dining. Located in Shelbyville, Ind., Indiana Grand features 2,200 of the latest slots and electronic table games in addition to a one-mile dirt race course and a seven-eighths mile turf course offering live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing each year. Simulcast wagering is also offered year-round at Winner’s Circle Brewpub & OTB located on the casino floor as well as an offtrack betting facility located in Clarksville, Ind. CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

By Christa Conway

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone How do you get a horse seasoned to rodeo? It’s a whole new world. From the hauling to the atmosphere.... and the ground is a whole new world all on it’s own. I hauled the miles a few years ago (maybe more...wink, wink) to season a couple horses to the world of rodeo barrel racing. It took a little time to adjust my riding, their shoes and their confidence to run on something besides what I’d call sweepstakes ground. Up until that point they had been horse show barrel horses. Both me and my horses had to step out of our comfort zones and be willing to fail at first before figuring it out and finally becoming succesful in a world previously unknown to us all. Even though a barrel race is a barrel race no matter where you’re running - it is a lot different to go from horse show barrel racing to rodeo barrel racing. Last week we was time for our hometown rodeo. We usually enter every year -my daughter’s only rodeo experience- and she has always done well riding my old faithful “been there, done that” rodeo horse. This year we decided to take some young horses that have only been to horse show type barrel races. My daughter has a nice five year old that has excelled in the horse show arena and I decided to exhibition my five year old as well - for “fun.” We were ALL stepping (large steps) out of our comfort zone. My horse - Everything seemed to be going ok, for grand entry. May as well dive in head first, right? Back to the trailer with no issues. Once slack started and we were up around the livestock and the ropes for a few minutes he reverted back to his racetrack days (I assume) and became a washed out mess to put it lightly. I managed to keep him together and as quiet as possible (which wasn’t very) from a distance until my turn to cruise through. He was out of his comfort zone and he was spent. He did listen to me and managed to cruise a half-hearted set of barrels and all I could think was, “Thank God I didn’t spend any money on fees!” He wasn’t perfect, but the experience will make him better for the next time. He will learn to trust me even more and the growth is what it’s all about. My daughter’s horse - He handled everything like it was no big deal. Livestock didn’t bother him, worked like a pro during intermission. When it came time to run (she was also in slack) the pair had an awesome first barrel! I think she got a little excited and forgot to hand ride him more to account for the different ground. He spun out and faded bad on the second and third. It wasn’t pretty.

INSPIRATION

BUT, we learned some valuable lessons. Anytime you step out of your comfort zone there will be failure. Anytime you step out of your comfort zone there will be challenges and frustrating circumstances. Anytime you step out of your comfort zone you will most likely question if what you are doing is worth it. Anytime you step out of your comfort zone you will be UNCOMFORTABLE. What you will also find when you step out of your comfort zone is that you will LEARN. You will learn about yourself, about your friends, your horse...you will learn! And you will GROW! You can’t get better if you aren’t willing to challenge yourself. This is all really a lot of talk about horses and rodeos and challengeing yourself this month, but the most important thing I took from this experience in retrospect is this: “If I am willing to get out of my comfort zone and run barrels at a rodeo on a young horse...am I willing to get out of my comfort zone and do something for Jesus?

Page 34

I put myself in a postition to be potentially judged by my peers and took a young horse (that ended up being covered in lather after about 20 minutes) with no idea how he would make me look in the arena in front of a lot of people. I was willing to put myself under that scrutiny - would I risk the same scrutiny for my Savior? Putting it into perspective, I thought about witnessing to friends, singing in church, testifying of how God has saved me and how willing I am to do any of those things and more. Would I put as much effort into doing something for Jesus? I like to think so...but honestly I can’t guarantee I would step as far out of my comfort zone. I am ashamed to admit it, but it is something I need to work on personally. When I think about singing in front of the church, I can get a little washed out like my five year old. BUT, God is faithful and will guide us through if we listen to Him, just like I guided my young horse through the pattern. I hope when you read this you put into perspective what you are willing to do that challenges you for the Lord. Remember - God doesn’t call the prepared, he prepares the called. There are so many stories in the bible about those called that had to leave their comfort zones. Read the stories of Esther, Nehemiah and Moses just to name a few. In the meantime, remember this: Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

LEAD THE WAY Gus woke up early Before the rising sun Put on his cowboy hat Then strapped on his gun

He took off his hat Held it at his side Said Lord I want to thank you For this good horse I ride

So Lord today ride with us Like every day before You know what’s out there Beyond that ol` barn door

I trust in you Lord This day will be the best I’ll praise you as I ride Till the sun sits in the West

Walked out to the barn Saddled his best hoss Said morni` there Lead Remember I’m the boss

We’ve been many miles Seen some good and bad Yep he’s a good`en The best I’ve ever had

As I ride ol` Lead Take the reins from my hand You guide me and Lead All across this here land

Psalm 113:3 From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’s name is to be praised.

Before Gus climbed up He said Lead we better pray So much to give thanks for This could take all day

Lord you gave him to me It was a few years back But now we’re headed out Into the night so cold and black

So thanks again for Lead He sure is a good hoss And forgive me Lord You’re still the Boss

One Last (& Most Important) Thought… Read past issues of the Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for ALL of OUR sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day. He defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed - born again! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

In the Morning

In The Morning On the first morning … you existed without the nothingness. And You gave us light to see the absence of darkness. On the second morning … you existed without space. And You gave us sky as the canvas for sunrises and sunsets. On the third morning … you existed without borders. And You gave us land upon which we could stand. On the fourth morning … you existed without constellations. And You gave us the Sun, Moon and stars. On the fifth morning … you existed without other living creatures. And You gave us animals to admire and touch. On the sixth morning … you existed without relationships. And You gave us each other to know love.

He conceived and created. He spoke and the unconceivable became reality. His reality became the wonder around us. His will became what we will never understand. I sit quietly, coffee in hand, this morning. I listen in the darkness to what I cannot see. I wait for the light to come on a new day. In the world around me, I sense the presence of God. And it is good …. It is very, very good!

Everyone Needs A Break Excerpt from Barks N Bits, Spring 2011

After my last report, things got very interesting, to say the least. The new addition at the ranch - now named “Seven” - was fitting in quite nicely. He was getting lots of laughs with his never ending antics and making new friends with some of the horses around the ranch.

new friend is a big sorrel gelding. The sorrel gelding doesn’t mind Seven following him around for the most part, but every now and then he needs a break from the donkey’s aggravating ways.

One of the donkey’s favorite things to do after his arrival was hang out with this particular bay mare. (I think he had a little donkey crush on her.) He followed her around everywhere and it got so bad that when the bay mare was getting ridden by the people, the donkey would follow them through the patterns. While she was galloping for her exercise he would sometimes be right on her heels! One time he was following her so close at a walk, when the person said “Whoa” and the bay mare stopped....Seven didn’t hit the brakes in time and ended up between her back legs! He’s lucky that bay mare was in a good mood that day!

I know how he feels. Sometimes I just need a break from the little black bark box (Princess Annabelle.) That’s when my people take me on a trip to the lake. They must have some kind of sixth sense and know just the right time to get me out of here before I lose it. When the donkey started chasing cars it almost sent me over the edge and that must have been a great clue for them to get me “outta Dodge” and head south to the lake.

“Seven” the mini-donkey has since been forbidden from the arena during training time for the big horses and the bay mare has since went home for a break. Seven has found a new friend to pester when he gets a chance. His

I have to say that I really love the lake! To tell you the truth, I think the people kind of like it too. They seem to enjoy themselves while they are entertaining me. I love the peace and quiet, no responsibilities and of course, I’m the only critter that gets to go....so no Aggravating Annie.

I like everything including the ride in the car where I get to sit in the middle and watch for critters in the road. The people take me out to ride in the boat and let me lounge on the tube on the water. Then they play around and splash and drive the boat fast, I don’t complain.... the least that I can do is let them have their fun since they make this special trip so I can have some rest. Now that I am rested and rejuvenated..... it’s back to the ranch to try to regain some order. Until next month.... Take A Break..... I did.....
