The Horse Report Detecting when mare is ready for foaling

The Magic Breed Plus system uses this well-documented behaviour to help alert owners that the mare has laid down to commence foaling

Atransmitter containing a special sensor called an accelerometer is attached to the mare’s halter. The accelerometer allows the transmitter to determine the direction of the ground and therefore it can detect when the mare has laid on her side.

When the transmitter detects that the mare is in the foaling position is will begin timing and after a short delay it will alert the receiver, which will sound an alarm.

Note: Some mares are very active and will even temporarily lay in the foaling position prior to foaling.

How the Magic Breed Plus Foaling Alarm Works

This results in false alarms, so it’s important to be able to easily and temporarily silence any foaling alarms.

The Magic Breed Plus makes this easy. The Magic Breed Plus system is comprised of two main components - the receiver (base station) and transmitter.

The transmitter is attached to the mare and sends wireless signals to the base station for reporting when it has detected that the mare is foaling.

RECEIVER

The receiver is a dark grey unit which has a power supply and antenna connected at the rear. Up to 8 transmitters can be used with a single receiver.

TRANSMITTER

Magic Breed Plus transmitters are battery powered and contain an accelerometer which enables it to sense the orienta-

tion of the mare’s head.

Detecting when the mare is laying on its side with its head on the ground is how the transmitter determines if the mare is in a foaling position. The transmitter is secured in place under the mare’s chin using a halter fitted with a transmitter pouch. The pouch is fitted to the halter using the four Velcro straps.

Pouches are manufactured from high quality Weathermax® canvas and should last many foaling seasons but if required replacements are available for purchase.

The pouch is designed to work with both the original Magic Breed and the new Magic Breed Plus transmitters. Once the pouch has been fitted to the halter, the transmitter

Equine gastric ulcers: signs, diagnosis and treatment

Gastric ulcers, or Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), is one of the most common diseases affecting the equine stomach.

Gastric ulcers can affect all breeds of horses and can be categorised by the area of the stomach they affect and the severity of the ulceration.

Gastric ulcers can range from mild to severe and can be challenging to identify- no clinical sign or lab test is specific for ulcers.

Symptoms can vary and diagnosis can be tricky as they can present similarly to other common complaints.

Symptoms to look for in your horse:

- Decreased appetite and reluctance to feed.

- Abdominal discomfort (colic)

- Poor performance or a change in attitude.

- Weight loss and poor body condition

- Change in hair coat.

Diagnosis of ulcers.

Diagnosis relies on visualisation of ulcers in the stomach region, and this is achieved with the use of a Gastroscope. The apparatus is a three-metre-long flexible tube that is passed down the oesophagus via the nostril.

Acamera on the end of the scope is used to view the inside of the stomach, with the Gastroscope being connected to a computer screen.

AGastroscope gives us the ability to view the squamous, glandular and pyloric regions of the stomach - all common areas for ulcers.

During your horse’s scope, the vet can take video or photos of any area of interest.

Prior to scoping, your horse's stomach will need to be empty, therefore fasting is carried out from the previous evening.

Asedative is used to help keep your horse relaxed and comfortable - the procedure is not painful but it can be a little unfamiliar for your horse.

Treatment

Treatment consists of environmental, behavioural, dietary management as well as medical intervention. Put simply, it is all about dampening down the acid production within your horse's stomach.

This can be achieved via forage consumption (pasture, roughage eg hay) which provides a physical barrier; lining the stomach to help reduce acid "splashing", H2 blockers (antacids), Sucralfatewhich creates a coating over ulcers, and proton pump inhibitors (or omeprazole) have proven to be extremely effective. For the holistic person, herbs such as Comfrey Leaf, Marshmallow Root, Liquorice, Meadowsweet and Slippery Elm have all shown properties that provide a mucous layer over the stomach lining, but they do take longer to have a beneficial effect.

To prevent ulcers in horses, avoid long periods without access to feed and allow your horse to graze for extended periods of time - just as they would in the wild. Reducing stressors, avoiding high grain diets and prophylactic treatment can help prevent ulcers.

Should your horses be fed before exercise?

The question of whether you should feed a horse before exercise is one that is commonly asked.

The horse is a monogastric and a continuous grazer, so logic says that a horse’s stomach should never be empty.

Having a full stomach is important for the horse as it stops gastric acids from the lower part of the stomach splashing around and irritating the upper sections of the gastrointestinal tract.

This acid splash that occurs in horses exercised on an empty stomach is thought to contribute to the development of gastric ulcers. Therefore, if a horse is stabled without constant access to forage, or if it has been more than two hours since the horse last grazed or fed, you should feed your horse before exercise. Asmall feed will protect a horse from gastric ulcers in two ways.

Chewing the feed will stimulate saliva production and saliva acts as a buffer in the stomach.

And the feed will fill up the stomach and prevent gastric acids from splashing around (for more information on Gastric Ulcers you should read our post Avoiding Gastric Ulcers).

What should you feed before exercise?

You should only feed forage before exercising your horse and preferably long stem forage like hay.

Hay requires a lot of chewing and will stimulate plenty of saliva production which provides good buffering protection for the stomach.

While any forage that forms parts of your horse’s everyday diet is acceptable, if you are concerned about gastric ulcers in your horses, alfalfa (lucerne) hay has been shown to be helpful when it comes to preventing or resolving ulcers.

So if alfalfa hay is available and is fed as part of your horse’s normal diet, this would make a good choice for a pre-ride or exercise feed.

How much hat should be feed?

While you don’t want to give your horse a very large feed of hay before exercise you do need to feed enough to provide some fill in the stomach.

Depending on when your horse was last fed, you should feed between 200 – 400 g/100 kg (0.2 – 0.4 lb/100 lb) of bodyweight, using the larger meal size if your horse hasn’t been fed for two or more hours and the smaller meal size if it has been two hours or less since your horse’s last meal.

What shouldn’t be fed before exercise?

Never feed grain within four to five hours of a ride or exercise, and that includes any feed

that is high in starches or sugar.

The starches and sugars in these feeds are absorbed from the small intestine largely as glucose, which triggers the release of insulin from the horse’s pancreas.

Blood glucose and insulin levels following a grain feed generally peak at two to three hours following a meal and return to normal within four to five hours.

Insulin is a hormone that instructs the horse’s muscles and organs to store away glucose. So if there is insulin in a horse’s blood when exercise starts, the horse isn’t able to mobilise glucose stores to burn and fuel the muscles during work (because insulin is there telling the muscles to store all the glucose away). The horse’s ability to burn fat as an energy source is also reduced when insulin is present.

The result of feeding a grain or high starch and sugar feed too close to when the horse is exercised is the horse that will run out of muscle energy supplies and fatigue quickly. This concept is particularly important for high intensity exercise where a horse’s glucose supplies are burnt up very quickly.

In endurance type activities, large grain meals should not be fed within four to five hours prior to the start of exercise, however smaller grain meals may be fed during exercise to top up muscle glycogen stores and prolong the time to fatigue.

In Summary

Horses are constant feeders so they should always have a full stomach. Feeding a small meal of hay just before exercise will stimulate saliva production and provide fill in the stomach to protect the stomach from ulcers.

The Horse Report How can I help manage my itchy horse?

Successful management of itchy horses relies on identifying what caused the initial scratching.

For most horses, the itch cycle begins with an immune response to midge bites. Other common causes include reactions to mycotoxins, allergic reactions, parasites and bacterial or fungal skin infections. Skin condition and the location of your horse's initial scratching are the first clues to look for in identifying why your horse gets itchy. Others may include:

1. Insect bite hypersensitivity tends to cause itchiness around the head, eyes, ears, mane, topline and tail.

2. Feed or pasture mycotoxins or contact allergies caused by hypersensitivity to pollen, sawdust or other particles in the environment cause hives and general itchiness in some horses.

3. Itch around the head, neck, chest, shoulders and underside of the belly occurs with Onchocerca cervicalis infestation. These parasitic nematodes are transmitted by Culicoides midges. Tiny larvae live in the horse's skin and adult worms become encysted in the nuchal ligament of the neck where they are resistant to deworming chemicals.

4. Pinworms and other intestinal parasites can cause itchy tails and hindquarters.

Once a horse starts scratching, it can be hard for them to stop and chronic itch can develop. Spring is a good time to run faecal egg counts and plan your worming program. It's also time to get on top of itch in sensitive horses before the weather becomes hot and humid.

Managing the itchy horse

Regardless of the initial trigger, it is essential to provide correct nutrition to optimise immune function and the body's ability to heal. Seek the advice of a qualified equine nutritionist to ensure correct vitamin and mineral balance.

Although a well-balanced diet will include key

antioxidants (especially selenium and vitamin E), feed additional antioxidants (including vitamin C, organic selenium and natural vitamin E) to support immune function in hypersensitive horses.

Provide omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), to improve skin resilience and reduce dryness.

You'll need a marine-sourced omega-3 supplement made from algae or fish oil to provide DHA.

Plant sources such as linseeds, chia seeds and their oils contain omega-3 in the form of alphalinolenic acid (ALA).

Managing horses with insect bite sensitivities

Use rugs and masks to cover body, ears, neck and tail.

Apply insecticides (permethrin of at least 1% concentration or 10g per litre) and citronella/neem-based repellents regularly.

Treating horses with neck threadworm or intestinal parasites

Ask your vet for a worming protocol to target parasites when they are most susceptible.

Managing horses with mycotoxin-induced itch

Mycotoxin-associated itch is commonly seen during warm or wet weather.

If your horse develops greasy heel, itch and/or signs of photosensitivity (sunburn), feed a toxin binder and apply zinc and antibiotic cream.

Managing Chronically Itchy Horses

Chronic itch tends to be caused by multiple factors which have an additive affect. Scratching damages the skin, allowing bacterial and sometimes fungal infections to establish, which continues the itch.

Flaky skin is a sign of bacterial infection. In addition to nutrition, insecticides, worming and toxin-binders, successful management of chronically itchy horses requires use of effective anti-bacterial shampoos, sprays or lotions and a fungicide if required. Avoid over-use of shampoos which can be too drying.

On the other hand, some creams hold too much moisture in the damaged skin, leaving them more prone to bacterial or fungal colonisation. Severely damaged skin may require veterinary prescribed anti-inflammatory creams or injections to help break the itch cycle.

Flaxseed a natural source of Omega 3’s

Flaxseed (also known as linseed) is a valued feed ingredient amongst horse people. How it should be used has long been the subject of considerable debate.

Its safety for horses has always been under question and methods of preparation are many and varied.

This article looks at what flaxseed can add to your horse’s diet, if it is safe to feed and how it can be prepared for feeding.

WHAT DOES FLAX ADD TO A DIET?

Flaxseed’s best known attribute is its high Omega 3 essential fatty acid content.

Flaxseeds are over 40% oil and more than 50% of this oil is the omega 3 fatty acid a-linolenic acid. Ahorse’s natural grazing diet is high in omega 3 fatty acids.

However as we add grains like corn and barley to a horse’s diet their diet can become skewed towards having high levels of omega 6 fatty acids.

Flaxseed provides a ‘natural’way to keep the levels of omega 3 in a horse’s diet balanced without using expensive omega 3 fatty acid supplements.

Adding 100 grams of flaxseed to your horse’s diet will add over 20 ml of omega 3 fatty acids. While omega 3 fatty acids are generally the primary reason flaxseeds are fed to a horse, flaxseeds are a decent source of protein with around 24% protein and 0.9% lysine and also contain around 25% fibre.

WHEN CAN FLAXSEED BE USED?

Flaxseed is useful for horses on a high grain ( therefore high omega 6 fatty acid) diet or when they are eating hay that has been in storage for some time or grazing low quality pasture.

Flaxseed may also be used when horses have a dry coat and skin, if they have problems with inflammation including arthritis and sweet itch/Queensland itch or when high omega 6 oils like corn oil or sunflower oil are being fed as an energy source in the diet.

Flaxseed itself can be used as a source of energy in the diet and because of its high fat attribute is often found in supplements intended to promote weight gain in horses.

HOW SHOULD FLAXSEED BE PREPARED FOR FEEDING?

Because flaxseed is such a small seed it is best to grind flaxseeds immediately prior to feeding to break the seed coat, otherwise the seeds will pass undigested all the way through the gastrointestinal tract.

It is important to grind the seeds fresh just prior to feeding as the oils in flaxseed are prone to rancidity and will go off very quickly if ground and left exposed to air. Asmall coffee grinder is commonly used for the purpose of grinding fresh flax straight into a horse’s feed.

DOES FLAXSEED HAVE TO BE BOILED BEFORE FEEDING?

Tradition says that flaxseed must be boiled before feeding it to a horse because of the risk of Prussic Acid (or hydrogen cyanide) poisoning. Anyone who has boiled flaxseed knows how messy it gets and for most the effort and mess are too much to continue persisting. Well good news … flaxseed it seems can be fed safely without being boiled.

Flaxseed contains compounds called cyanogenic glycosides.

When the flaxseeds are chewed up by a horse these cyanogenic glycosides come into contact with an enzyme (ß-glycosidase) which converts it to hydrogen cyanide, which can then lead to cyanide poisoning.

However, the ß-glycosidase enzyme is destroyed by the acidic environment of the horse’s gastric stomach, meaning the cyanide is never produced in quantities large enough to cause any problems. This means you can feed flaxseed without cooking it first.

SUMMARY

Flaxseed is a useful feed ingredient for horses. It can be used to increase a horse’s omega 3 essential fatty acid intake where dietary omega 3 levels are low or when higher intakes of omega 3 for a particular horse seem beneficial. Despite popular opinion that flaxseed must be cooked prior to feeding to avoid hydrogen cyanide poisoning, studies have shown that up to 1 lb/1000 lb bodyweight (or 0.5 kg/500 kg BW) can be safely fed without cooking. Flaxseed should not be soaked prior to feeding and they should be avoided in the diets of breeding mares with reproduction problems.

Flax Seed Oil provides the richest (almost 60%) natural source ofOmega 3, an essential fatty acid (EFA) which is not generally present in equine foods. Like all animals, horses cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid which is so important for their overall health.

Solar margin Type IV fractures of this magnitude have well-documented internationally published healing rates of 7 - 12 months. Full resolution of these fractures is rare as most often the fracture fragments are resorbed. Full resolution in a 3 month period was not anticipated.

“BYE BYE FLY”

QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA

and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.

These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.

Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.

Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.

Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.

How does it work?

Class 4: Any laser with output of 500mW or more. Mainly used by medical professionals. Gives off heat and can damage eyes if used

without protective glasses. Contraindications to use:

Do not use on animals with cancer. Never shine in eyes (avoid using on face). Wear protective glasses when using class 4 (optional for class 3).

Do not use on the abdomen of pregnant animals.

Always follow instructions for proper use of the particular cold laser you are utilizing. Laser I recommend:

If you are looking for an effective, easy to use and easy to handle laser, I highly recommend the Class 3 laser. I have personally used this laser on many animals and myself with great results. This laser is very affordable, but requires longer treatment sessions Overall, it is an excellent affordable option to add Cold Laser Therapy to your practice.

Choke in horses is extremely common

Choke in horses is extremely common, in fact, one of the most common conditions seen in horses.

When there is a partial or complete obstruction of the oesophagus Choke will occur. The oesophagus is the tube that transports feed from the mouth down into the stomach. When a horse chokes, it is very different to that of a human choking as unlike horses when people choke they are also unable to breathe.

When a horse is choking, it means that they are unable to move food or water from the mouth to the stomach effectively causing a temporary blockage.

Choke symptoms

Horses experiencing choke may exhibit the following signs:

* Food and saliva coming from the mouth or nostrils. Can be foamy and white to green in colour.

* Hypersalivation

* Stress and lethargy

* Swallowing may be difficult.

* Not eating or drinking

* Coughing

* May give the appearance of colic symptoms.

* They will try to stretch their necks and repeat trying to swallow, this can cause the neck to spasm. They may even try to roll to try to dislodge the blockage.

What are the causes of Choke in horses?

There are many reasons why a horse may choke, remembering it is very common is generally related to horses consuming dry or abrasive food which is almost always eaten too quickly.

Any pelleted feed that is commercially produced (powdered before production) swells very quickly once it encounters saliva.

It is then chewed and begins to pass down the oesophagus, very often horses will choke in these circumstances.

If the feed is too wet prior to the horse taking it into the mouth, then this can accelerate the risk of choke in some cases.

If the horse normally eats his feed quickly this can be another contributing factor as the feed is not chewed sufficiently.

Horses with dental issues also tend to choke as once again they do not chew the feed correctly.

Hay that is coarse does not encourage the horse to chew sufficiently and can be lodged in the oesophagus, even eating treats such as carrots or harder types of feed can contribute to the risk of choke.

An abnormal oesophageal anatomy can also contribute to choke.

Veterinary treatment

Veterinary treatment is generally not required, but certainly if you are uncertain always call you vet as in a minority of cases it can be quite severe.

If your horse required medical treatment, he or she should be able to return to normal work one -two weeks later.

The following symptoms, could be complications from choke if you notice any of these call your vet immediately:

"Coughing

"Nasal discharge

"Lethargy

"Increased respiratory rate

"Loss of appetite

"Temperature

"Head down, rolling, look of fear in their eyes, uncomfortable.

Slow your horse’s eating speed to prevent Choke

If your horse has suffered choke it is important to make sure you change the way you are feeding and ensure a gradual return to normal eating.

You may be required to restrict the diet for a few days.

We must always remind ourselves that horses only have small stomachs and there is often a tendency to feed more than perhaps is required in one feed.

Reducing the quantities per feed is an absolute must.

If you are feeding a hard feed to your horse, you can reduce the risks by feeding a feed that is preferably long stem fibre like Hi Form Complete (formally known as Harrys Choice), these are long stem fibre pellets and have not been processed prior to production. For horses that have choked, the following suggestions may assist to reduce the risk of choke in the future:

* Hay feed small amounts but often

* Limit grazing and perhaps hand graze

* Soaking or steaming hay

* Using oil such as AlphaFlax added to the pellets may be a huge advantage to reducing the risk also.

The best advice to prevent Choke.

Make sure your horse's teeth are maintained on a regular basis not matter what age and always ensure there is fresh clean water.

Agreat

way to reduce the risk of Choke is to slow down those horses that tend to eat fast is to provide the hay in slow feeder hay nets with a smaller hole.

Horses often eat too quickly when they are in a shared paddock situation as they are constantly competing for food, reduce the competition.

Dampening the feed using oil is a great way to reduce the risk and even adding some chaff into the pellet meal will slow them down.

Spreading feed out over a large sized feed bin or out on a rubber mat so they have to "forage" for their feed will slow down the process. Even putting a brick in their feeder to slow them down may help.

Your horse needs regular dental check ups

The importance of regular dental check up and maintenance cannot be expressed strongly enough.

Teeth begin the digestive process and as such, make them vital to the health of your horse.

The horse’s stomach is designed to digest very small pieces of fibre - smaller even than chaff.

The teeth are responsible for grinding the food into these small pieces and therefore allowing the horse to digest the food and gain nutrition from it.

If the teeth aren’t able to do this job, then a multitude of problems will follow.

Sharp points and hooks can be extremely painful and not only limit the ability to grind food, but can cause damaged to the inside of your horse’s mouth - a very good reason to have dental check ups on your horses regularly.

Have a guess where that lower tooth goes when the horse shuts it's mouth .....straight in to the pallet of the upper jaw.

Remember, out of sight is out of mind. Please don't ignore your horse’s mouth until there is a problem or he can't eat. Contact your local equine vet or dentist today to make an appointment to have his or her teeth checked.

The Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) came into being to meet the needs of young people.

So they got started on rethinking how to educate, equip and empower.

The AITC started helping young people to find their purpose and proudly pursue a pathway in industry, at school. Some might call it a trade but for the AITC, it is a profession. It’s about finding what fits; about loving what you do. Before opening its doors in 2006, thought was focused on who the AITC needed to be and the role it could play in the education and employment landscape.

Knowing the why

I was teaching a clinic recently and I demonstrated a way of doing somthing. Along with teaching the way of doing something I explain alongside why we do it that way. I believe this makes more sense to people when they know why something is done a certain way.

The particular thing I was teaching had a significant safety aspect.

Someone in the group said "some old guy showed me that years ago, but because I didn't know the reason, I didn't do it".

Hmm. So this is a multi faceted situation.

Firstly, I'm a huge advocate of knowing why you are doing something, and so I teach that way. BUT! I'm also not going to simply "not do something" because I don't know why. This is my opportunity to either: Critically assess and figure out why. Ask the person who told me why.

Ask others why they think it's done that way (note here that the others may not know the original reason either).

Working with horses isn't about having blind faith on what you are told, but it's also not about not doing something because you don't understand it yet.

You might just get yourself, someone else, or your horse, hurt.

The 2023 Mullumbimby Show will be held over 3 days from 10th till 12th of November. Exciting changes for the always beautiful main arena of the Mullumbimby show have been made for our Horse section entrants.

New timetables will be trialled to alleviate disruptions.

The Main Ring will have hack, hunter and breed classes including Youngstock feature classes.

Get your creative ideas ready for the fun of the Fancy Dress class, anything goes class for horse and rider/handler.

The Far North Coast Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society are providing prizes for our Australian Stock Horse Feature ring which has handler, hack and working classes for junior and senior registered Stock Horses.

Our ever-popular Show jumping program will be run on Saturday & Sunday with great cash prizes from our generous sponsors for the great selection of events.

The Tweed River Agricultural Society will hold its 121st Murwillumbah Show on 3 & 4 November 2023 at the Murwillumbah Showground, 37 Queensland Road, Murwillumbah. The Show will commence with a huge evening of entertainment on Friday 3 November, including a rodeo, bar, food, live music & sideshow alley. All horse events and other traditional show events and exhibits, together with terrific entertainment line-up, are jam-packed into Saturday 4 November. Alstonville to include Extreme Cowboy Event in competitions

The Alstonville Agricultural Society will be including Extreme Cowboy Event in their horse competitions program this year. This is very exciting as this is the only Show Society in the Northern Rivers Zone who have incorporated this equine sport which originated in America. It is specifically designed to invite riders of all levels to participate.

Obstacle courses are set up as a challenge to test the skill of horses and their riders. The obstacles must be completed while the rider remains calm throughout.

Horsemanship is the focus with trust and confidence between the rider and their horse.

The challenge is to complete the course without mistakes in the fastest time.

NNSWECAClub divisions and club rules will apply to this competition in place of EXCAdivisions.

“BYE BYE FLY BYE FLY”

QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE

ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.

These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.

Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.

Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
