The Horse Report

Aussies in top 10 at Eventing World Championships By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Great results have been achieved by Aussies at the 2023 FEI WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championship for Young Horses in Le Lion d’Angers (FRA) including two Australian combinations at the top of the leaderboard in the 6-year-old class. Since 2000, Le Lion D’Angers has played host to the most prestigious championship for young Eventing horses. The FEI WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championship for Young Horses highlights the connection between breeding and performance and many horses that have competed in Le Lion d’Angers have gone on to excel at the top levels in the sport. In the 6-year-old division, Isabel English and Cil Dara Bombay S put in a faultless performance to finish fifth overall on their Dressage score of 29.8. Only five combinations, in the field of 46, finished on their Dressage score. Cil Dara Bombay S is an Australian Warmblood by Balou du Rouet x Cil Dara Duchess by Diarado, owned by Sarah English, Sofia Von Moltke and John and Jenny Curtis. Kevin McNab and Wilfred Lancer also excelled in the 6-year-old division finishing seventh. Sitting in 15th spot after the Dressage phase on 31.4, they went clear and under time in cross-country which saw them move to 11th place and was capped off with clear jumping with only 0.4 time added. Wilfred Lancer is an Anglo European by Tangelo Van De Zuut Hoeve (Otangelo) x Evian De Hus by Conrad and is owned by Sofia Von Moltke. Also in 6-year-old class were Isabel English on Elysian Fields Prado, an Australian

Supplementing hay rich diets when there is no grass By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Dry times and a lack of fresh pasture is a real issue in many areas at the moment, causing vitamin deficiencies in horses reliant on hay for roughage. Vitamins Fresh grass is rich in many vitamins, but vitamins do not store well once grass is cut and based for hay. Vitamins should be supplemented whenever your horse is relying on hay for the majority of the daily roughage requirement. Hay starts losing its vitamin content as soon as it starts drying out, and by the time it has been stored for 12 months, there are virtually no vitamins left. Vitamin E and B1 are often the first to become limiting in a diet, so choose a supplement with good levels of vitamins A, B and E. Depending on workload, a 500 kg horse needs 15,000 to 22,500 IU of vitamin A, 500 to 900 IU of vitamin E, 30 to 60 mg of thiamine (vitamin B1) and 20 mg of riboflavin(vitaminB2). Choose a supplement which contains these levels in a daily serve. Remember when comparing supplements to compare on either a per dose or per kilogram basis - as a daily dose of a supplement will only contain a fraction of the amount present in a kilogram of the product. * To convert from per serve to per kilogram, divide 1000 by the serve size in grams then multiply by the amount per serve size (in grams). * To convert from per kilogram to per serve, multiply the amount per kilo by the serve size (all in grams) then divide by 1000. Vitamin A is used for night vision, bone development and is vital for the mucus linings which are the body's first point of defence against infection. Vitamin A is produced by your horse from the beta carotene in the diet, but beta carotene is very quickly oxidised from hay and must be supplemented if horses are not grazing plenty of fresh pasture. A quality vitamin and mineral supplement will provide enough vitamin A to top up the ration. All horses need vitamin E supplementation, even those grazing green grass. Hay-reliant

horses need higher levels of supplemental vitamin E than those at pasture. The vitamin E requirement of hard-working horses is almost double the amount needing for maintenance (i.e. a spelling horse). A healthy gut microbial population can produce enough vitamin B1 for a healthy horse at rest, but the levels need topping up for horses on dry or poor quality forage as well as for hard-working horses and during times of stress. Horses use four of the eight B group vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid) to utilise energy from the carbohydrates and fats in the diet. Biotin, important for hoof and hair health, is also part of the vitamin B family. If you are feeding horses in moderate or harder work, or breeding and growing horses, choose a multi-vitamin supplement which includes a suite of B-group vitamins rather than just thiamin (B1) and riboflavin (B2). Vitamin D is used to protect bones and joints and maintain muscle function. It is produced by the body when oils in the skin are exposed to sunlight, so a supplement is advised when a horse is stabled full-time or washed with shampoo regularly enough to remove skin oils. Vitamins C and E are important antioxidants which neutralise free radicals in the body. High performance horses have an increased need for these vitamins because the stress of intense exercise creates more free radicals than encountered at lower work levels.

Vitamin C is not normally supplemented as horses manufacture their own supply but sick or hard-working horses as well as those with respiratory disease or aged over 15 years will benefit from additional supplementation. Omega-3s The omega-3 fatty acids naturally supplied by fresh grass do not store in hay. These naturally anti-inflammatory fats are responsible for balancing the pro-inflammatory omega-6 oils that do survive in hay and grains. There are various ways of supplementing omega-3 fatty acids to tip the omega 3:6:9 ratio back into a balance. Omega-3 rich supplements include fish oil, certain types of algal powder, chia seeds and linseed (flaxseed) seeds and oils. Because omega-3 molecules are very fragile and break down in light, heat and oxygen, when using plant-based omega-3 supplements such as linseeds should be fed whole or freshly ground. If using oil, spend the extra money on a stabilised oil and store it in a dark bottle in the fridge. The plant form of omega-3 (ALA) is converted to the algal and fish forms (EPA and DHA) inside the horse but the process is inefficient (only 5 to 10 percent conversion). This means that a supplement which supplies marine-sourced omega-3s (EPA and DHA) can be used at a much lower rate than ALA with the same benefits.  Continued page 11

Horses eating hay require more water  From page 10 Minerals The mineral content of hay will be similar to the mineral content of the fresh grass from which it was made. No pasture or hay will provide all of a horse's requirement for copper, zinc, selenium and often iodine or vitamin E. Therefore these minerals must be supplemented to provide optimal levels and balance critical mineral ratios. Providing horses with optimal minerals as part of a well-balanced diet improves nutrient absorption, enzyme activity and generally allows their bodies to function effectively. Correct mineral balance improves feed use efficiency, which can mean a horse gets better value out of every mouthful of feed and needs less caloric intake each day to perform the same work (and that can mean a smaller feed bill). It's a bit like a car's engine doing more kilometres per litre when fuelled with a higher quality fuel that allows the engine to perform more efficiently.

Make sure to keep your horse’s water cool and clean, especially if they are feed lost of hay.

Water Everyone who fills a horse water trough will know that some horses drink more than others, and that they drink more in hot weather. Horses also prefer their water to be cool to lukewarm in temperature. Keeping the water source under a roof will help manage water temperature and is advisable as a Hendra

prevention measure. On average, horses consume around 50 ml of water per kg of horse bodyweight (a range of between 41-67 ml/kg BW). Not surprisingly, this means that a small horse drinks less than a large one. Lactating mares need a minimum of 75 - 100 ml water per kilogram of bodyweight.

Foals also need access to water in a low, easy to reach container, even though they receive much of their fluid intake as milk. When horses eat lots of hay rather than grass, they will drink more because hay contains much less water than fresh grass so be sure to keep water troughs full of clean, cool water.

Flax Seed Oil provides the richest (almost 60%) natural source of Omega 3, an essential fatty acid (EFA) which is not generally present in equine foods. Like all animals, horses cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid which is so important for their overall health.

Mud Fever - what you need to know By SANDY ROGERS of Scopex Laboratories and Dr Jim Rawlinson BVMS MBA MRCVS of Nettex What is mud fever? Mud fever or pastern dermatitis is a condition that causes scabs, irritation and sores typically on the pasterns or heals. More severe cases can result in heat, swelling and lameness. Mud fever is typically seen in wet and muddy conditions. What causes mud fever? Mud fever is a combination of damage to the skin surface and bacterial infection. In healthy horses, numerous types of microorganisms live on the skin without causing any harm. However, when the skin is damaged, bacteria can enter and cause infection. The most common bacteria isolated is Dermatophilus congolensis, although other microorganisms can also contribute. What does mud fever look like? Signs range in severity. Starting with scabs, commonly on the pastern, they can extend upwards towards the cannons. In severe cases pus, crusting, swelling and heat can develop potentially causing lameness. What to do if you have mud fever? Removing the scabs is key. Dermatophilus congolensis can't survive in the presence of oxygen so removing scabs exposes the affected area, helping to control the infection. Removal can be difficult or painful, as scabs are often thick and crusty.

The following steps help to remove scabs as pain-ffree as possible Note: it may need to be repeated in severe cases

* Clip with fine clippers. * A softening cream like Nettex Muddy Marvel De-Scab softens scabs making removal easier. * Wash the legs with warm water and a diluted antibacterial wash. * Thoroughly dry each leg with a separate towel to avoid bacterial contamination. * Apply Nettex Muddy Marvel Disinfect to the affected areas and allow to dry. * If prescribed by your vet, antibiotic cream can be applied after scab removal.

* Finally, a barrier cream such as Nettex Muddy Marvel Barrier Cream can be applied. This contains moisturisers to support healthy skin and reduce cracking and drying. TIP: If wet conditions are forecasted, use a barrier cream such as Nettex Muddy Marvel Barrier Cream or a barrier spray, such as Nettex Muddy Marvel Seven Day Mud Away. Why use Kinesiology tape on your horse? Provided by ANGEL’S ANIMALS www.holisticanimalstudies.org Kinesiology tape is gaining popularity in both the human and equine world. As more people are becoming exposed to it, horse owners are beginning to wonder if this tape can help their horse. One of the more common questions I am asked from a horse owner is: "Why would I want to tape my horse?". My answer is that there are many reasons why you would want to use kinesiology tape on your horse. I have listed some of those answers below. * Decrease Pain - Most horses experience some form of pain on a regular basis. This could either be due to an injury, sore muscles from training and exercise, sore back due to an ill-fitting saddle, unbalanced rider or just from being ridden a lot. There are many other factors that can cause pain in your horse. Kinesiology tape can help decrease your horse's pain sensation while also improving blood flow to the area, allowing the area to heal quicker and mobilize lactic acid and other metabolic waste that is contributing to the pain sensation. * Stabilize Weak Areas - A horse that has ever suffered from a soft tissue injury (ligament, muscle, etc), likely suffers from some degree of instability due to it. Kinesiology tape can provide your horse with the additional support needed to prevent any further damage without reducing normal range of motion. * Decrease Swelling - Kinesiology tape can help mobilize fluid and decrease swelling due to injury, allergic reactions, stocking up, etc. * Increase Proprioception - Proprioception is the body's perception of where it's parts are. For example, a horse should know where all of it's hoofs are landing during exercise without having to look at them. Many horses who have suffered from injury or neurological disorders can benefit from kinesiology tape because it helps improve their body's proprioception by stimulating the proprioceptive nerves during movement. The better your horse's proprioception is working, the less chance he or she has of injuring themselves. * Improve Energy Meridian Flow Applying kinesiology tape along specific meridians can help improve energy flow along them.

Kinesiology tape can help decrease pain, inflamation and provide support. Stagnant energy in a meridian can lead to health issues, behavioral problems and more. Kinesiology tape is a safe and easy way to improve your horse's energy flow. * Speed Up Healing - Kinesiology tape helps to mobilize fluids (removes the inflammation and brings in oxygenated blood) to help speed up healing time. Post surgical tapings can be used to decrease inflammation following a surgery and also decrease scar tissue formation after sutures and staples are removed. While there are many reasons your horse can benefit from kinesiology tape, it is also important to receive proper training before applying tape to your horse. There are specific ways of cutting and applying the tape to achieve the appropriate goals. There are also some circumstances when kinesiology tape can make a situation worse, so it is important to be familiar with these before taping your horse. Be sure to receive proper training or seek guidance from a trained practitioner. Equine Kinesiology Taping On-Line Courses - Certification and Non-certification Options are available This course was developed to teach equine professionals and owners how to apply kinesiology tape to horses. The Horse Report

Optimum health of your horse starts with their diet By KARYN CAMPBELL Naturopath and Equine Herbalist ©Hi Form Australia 2023 Natural feeding and supplements for your horse are a must if you want your horse to live a happy and healthy life. You need your horse's diet to provide all the essential nutrients for growth, energy, muscle, hooves and coat condition. I have to admit that prevention is better than cure. So, if we can use preventative nutrition, it really does save you in the long run as it prevents disease and illness, boosts the immune system, promotes disease resistance, can lessen the effects of viral or bacterial infections, assists the gut and helps with joint disease such as arthritis. We have two feeds that we will suggest in our diet plans, they are FibrePlus and Alpha Fibre. These are complete feeds that have no fillers, no binders, no chemicals, no by-products, and no hidden nasties, only high-quality natural feeds. FibrePlus: Long stem lucerne hay, oaten chaff, Hi Form CompletaVite, Hi Form EquiSoy, GMO-free oil, organic rosemary extract, fibre-rich with higher energy and fat content for horses in higher workloads or requiring added conditioning. AlphaFibre: Long stem lucerne hay, Hi Form CompletaVite, GMO-free oil, organic rosemary extract fibre-rich and suitable for horses with metabolic issues (EMS, Laminitis, Diabetes, IR) and good doers. With these two feeds you can add in your supplements, your cold pressed AlphaFlax oil and maybe an apple or carrot as a treat. The feeds are low dose rates, which makes it economical for the horse owner. What happens when you feed your horse the wrong food? Horses can show symptoms such as anxiety, tension, girthiness, dull coat, dehydration, fatigue, swollen legs, tying up, gut ulceration, poor feed conversion, excitable behaviour and poor hoof condition or heat in the hooves.

INDIVIDUALISED EQUINE NUTRITION PROGRAMS customising a diet plan to suit the individuality of your horse.

Horses are herbivores and they are nonruminant. They are hindgut fermenters, where the large intestine is the main site of fermentation of fibrous food. The horse's digestive system is very sensitive to sudden changes in feeding, poor feeding, chemicals, overeating the wrong feeds, changing feeds too quickly and obstructions. When we are looking at changing from a poor feed to a natural feed that is more suitable for the horse, we need to take our time so as not to aggravate the digestive system and shock the horse. If we feed junk food (poor quality feeding) we can cause colic, diarrhoea, and gut disturbances such as bloat, nervousness or gastric ulcers. A quick swap with feeds can upset the gut microbiome which can account for things such as laminitis, colic, mood changes and condition. Now this is commonly the case but when you start to understand what is in your current bag of feed, have you ever looked at the ingredients to see exactly what is in there. A lot of feeds can have by-products, fillers, additives, flavourings, colour and sometimes things that we have never heard of. So, the idea of changing from "junk" food to

a natural feeding system is a brilliant idea and here is how to do it. It is recommended to make the transition over a period of 2-4 weeks. Anything less and you can see signs of colic, bloating, mood changes, laminitis, stress. You will start by adding in a small amount of the new feed to the existing feed and gradually every couple of days decrease the old feed and increase the new feed. Remember if you make the swap too quickly you will get an upset horse. It would be great to do a detox to remove any nasties from your horse's system. Give them a clean slate to start their new natural feed. We have a detox supplement Hi Form Detox that I recommend using the change of every season, change of diet, change of paddocks or properties, after illness or at times of stress. We have a brilliant team at Hi Form of highly qualified practitioners on staff who can assist you with diet plans, functional formulas, feeds and illnesses and many other issues your horse may have. Our practitioners are highly qualified in the field Naturopathy, Equine Herbalism, Nutritional Therapy and Equine Nutrition.

The Horse Report

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Connecting with animals Wendy J Animal Connections

Suuplied by WWW.WENDYJANIMALCONNECTIONS.COM.AU

How do intuitive sessions work? Intuition works by the transfer of energy between two energetic beings. I can’t explain it, I just know it works. Quantum physicists can explain it and there are some very good books on the subject. Contact me to find out which books are my favourites on the topic. Do I need to visit your animal in person? No, I don’t need to visit. All I need is a photograph of their face and basic details. I have worked with animals all over the world from my home office in Queensland. How do you do your sessions? I conduct my sessions remotely via a photograph and basic information about your animal (name, age and sex). After intuitively connecting with them, I can hold a conversation, much like I could have with you over the telephone or in person. I get words, see images like photographs and sometimes little movies of things that have happened. Sometimes I hear sounds, or get smells and tastes. Sometimes, I just “know”, like I did with our own horses. As the session progresses, I take notes and afterwards, I type up a full transcript of what your animal has told or shown me. After you have had time to read and think about the results, I am happy to reconnect briefly if you need clarification or more information. What do I need to do after I book a session? After you book your session, you need to send me a photograph of your animal’s face and basic details of name, age and sex, plus your questions for them. You can do this via my email nw.jones@bigpond.com, Facebook Messenger on my Wendy J Animal Connection page, or if you are in Australia by text to 0427 965 393. When will my session be done and when will I receive the transcript? I aim to conduct all sessions (except Emergency sessions) within a week of them being booked. If I know I won’t be able to do that, I will let you know. Emergency sessions I aim to do within a few hours of them being booked, if not straight away. If I can’t do that, I will give you the opportunity to find another animal communicator.

Radiographic proof in clinical results By Dr ANDREW WATTS BVSc Equine Veterinarian

VETERINARY RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT

BONE Gold nutritional bone joint and collagen supplement was formulated to provide some of the essential amino acid requirements of collagen type I, II and III (found in bone and connective tissue) in addition to supporting the nitric oxide pathway which has been found to assist in the formation of bone callus postinjury. Veterinary surgeons have recommended that Bone Gold may assist with sore shins, tendon injuries, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis and post-surgery in horses and polyarthritis, geriatric osteoarthritis, and post-surgery in dogs. Here is a veterinary radiographic report on a horse with a fracture evident on the medial toe and after treatment and feeding Bone Gold during this period. Dehydration and heat stress in horses Supplied by HYFEED EQUINE Horses sweat freely and are often over exposed to the environment for lengthy periods in a paddock. In addition to this many horses undertake regular and vigorous work like racing, endurance, and eventing and weekend trail riding. These horses have an increased risk of suffering from dehydration. Dehydration can be a life threatening condition and should not be dismissed lightly. Dehydration is the result of fluid and electrolyte loss. The more a horse sweats the more electrolytes that they loose. It is important that your horse receives adequate electrolytes to prevent and minimize several serious conditions such as dehydration, anhydrosis and the thumps. Electrolytes are minerals that are dissolved in the blood and within cell fluids as electrically charged salts or” ions”. These salts are either acid or alkaline and the horse’s body usually keeps a careful balance between the two. The function of electrolytes is to aid in nerve transmission, muscle contraction and metabolic process and the control of water excretion.

· Travel · Diarrhoea · Lack of water · Lack of free sweating (anhydrosis) · Loss of appetite Treatment · Daily electrolyte supplementation · Oral electrolyte preparations Veterinary treatment may include intravenous rehydrating, blood tests to source the imbalance and special drugs depending on the severity of dehydration. Always ensure your horse has access to clean, fresh water.

When this balance is disrupted muscle fatigue sets in and the muscles become incapable of further contraction. Cramping and tying up are often the result of excessive electrolytes loss in the sweat that is not replaced as there are insufficient electrolytes in the diet to restore the balance. Daily feeding of electrolytes will ensure that they are replaced when used and thus preventing dehydration. Signs of Dehydration · Dry harsh coat

· Sunken eyes · Lethargy · Loss of appetite · Fatigue · Cramping · Tying up · Poor performance and slow recovery from work. · Poor capillary refill and lack of elasticity in the skin following a pinch test. Causes of Dehydration · Continual electrolyte loss though sweat, faeces and urine · Extreme hot weather · Exercise

In closing in the warmer months try to exercise your horse in the cooler part of the day if possible. Ensure that you supplement your horses feed with electrolytes daily. Always be prepared when travelling and plan rest stops along the way if travelling long distance. On arrival give your horse an electrolyte paste or liquid to help encourage water consumption. Most importantly ensure that your horse has natural or man made protection available from the extreme heat and always allow you horse free access to clean, fresh water. The Horse Report

Listening to a horse isn't pandering to it By TANJA KRAUS This is a really interesting topic and it's one that is quite complicated. A lot of the ideas that come to mind when we start talking about listening to the horse or watching its body or following it cues seems to bring up in people the idea that we are pandering to the horse. Or, more often than not, that we are training the horse wherein he does something negative and we stop doing what we're doing, reinforcing the behavior. Basically we are teaching the horse to continue doing the negative behavior because it will stop us from going forward with what we were going to do. Of course, this is absolutely something that can happen and I won't pretend that it can't. With appropriate timing and the ability to read your horse’s body language, you are able to use the information that you get, to show the horse that you're listening and that you will slow down and you will help him be more confident in what is happening. Pictured is a little horse that I worked with recently that had suffered some trauma. He was a fairly green horse and purchased only a few months ago. His new owner had ridden him at a clinic and out and about on her property with no issue, and on a particular day the moon and the stars aligned for a challenging situation in which the horse could not cope. Upon mounting, the horse had reached his tolerance level and bucked causing the owner to have a significant fall. As a result of the incident, he hasn't been ridden in quite sometime and the last experience was the accident. We are now ready to bring him back into work and wanted to make sure that it was done in a calm confident and supportive environment, for both him and the owner. She had been doing some ground work with him and saddling at home and when I started working with him he was already saddled and we began there. As I started to do ground work, I noticed he was quite tense reactive and holding his breath, so my first priority was getting him comfortable moving around on the ground at all three gaits. This doesn't mean simply asking him to walk, trot and canter both directions. It's vital to read his body. The reason that it's so important to watch this horse’s Page 26

body language is because he's very proficient on the ground in understanding what it is that you're asking of him. So while normally with a green horse or a younger horse you may be able to use a simple walk, trot and canter both directions to confirm whether they are okay or not, this horse is able to hold himself together emotionally, even if he's not okay because he understands what it is that you're asking him. What I need to do is ask for transitions; ask for turnarounds, changes of direction -- which change the eye that he's looking at me through and importantly, observe his body language. My approach included changing the pace within a gait, so having the requirement of him going faster or slower within walk, trot and canter. This helped to make sure that he was able to listen and execute cues even in movement. It included me causing the saddle to move, and checking to make sure that he was able to follow energy cues even while he was moving - eg- if he was able to come to a stop despite a rope swinging etc. One of the most crucial factors of this exercise and this ground work is the multiple rest periods that I allowed the horse to experience. At the end of the day, I don't want to get on a reactive horse, I want to get on a thinking horse. The thinking horse is created when we increase pressure to a level that the horse can emotionally and mentally handle and decreasing the pressure to allow thought and processing of that experience. I cannot stress how important it is to remain within the tolerance level of the horse. Otherwise we are simply tormenting them and we may be lucky enough so to speak to get them tired enough or overwhelmed enough to ride that day but eventually that tired and overwhelm will wear out and we will find ourselves in a dangerous situation. After I felt the horse was safe enough to mount or to at least

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

proceed to working with the idea of mounting, I used a colt starting technique of bouncing in the stirrup and then stepping down to communicate to the horse that we were heading towards mounting and riding. What this allowed was, the horse can display his concern and worry, (he demonstrates through teeth grinding worried eyes, pursed lips, tongue rolling) and then allowed me time to show him that "I see that you're worried, let me step down and give you some time". Once I had done this a few times he became more relaxed with the process and I was able to proceed putting weight in the stirrup. I did this a couple of times, again showing him that I recognised his concern, allowing him

time to relax. When I felt safe I stepped up into the saddle. When I first mounted he was quite tense, but because I had spent time showing him that I was listening, he didn't feel it necessary to react. Instead he allowed me to bend him and talk to him and show him he was okay. We were able to step off in the walk without issue. I stayed on him for a short session of walk and a little bit of trot to allow him to become confident in the ride and then I dismounted, took all the gear off and allowed him to roll in the sand. It left him with a great experience for his most recent ride, hopefully replacing the idea that being ridden was scary. Taking time doesn't mean that you aren't going do something and it doesn't mean that you're pandering, it means you're listening, you care and you are there to help your horse be more confident in what is happening. For us to take the time to help them through this process builds trust and demonstrates to the horse he can look to us for guidance.

Trainer T shirt improves rider alignment By KATE DOLAN The greatest gift for a rider is a good position and set of aids, using body awareness, centering and imagery. These classical principles of riding make it more enjoyable for the horse and rider partnership. It's so easy to forget that the only way we can truly improve the horse is through the correct riding position and aids. For example, in order to achieve straightness in the horse, you first have to straighten yourself, starting by becoming aware of your own ‘crookedness’ before you can even tell in what way the horse is crooked. The Trainer T was developed for my students to smooth this pathway and feel the right response in the horse. This simple visual tool helps riders to understand and correct upper body alignment and has been most effective for all riders from beginners to advanced riders. I understand the upper body position is only part of the package, but it is an essential ingredient for success. The results and feedback are exciting and worth sharing. Feedback from riders using th Trainer T includes: * I love this T because mum and dad can easily see and help me correct my position * I started riding taller as soon as I put it on!

The Trainer T is the perfect tool to improve posture, balance and seat. * I'm consistently getting the correct canter lead. * It's so much easier to control my horses shoulders now my position has improved. * I am able to keep the correct bend on both reins. * I've already improved from a 6 - 8 in my collective mark for position. Many of my students have won major events throughout Australia and the Trainer T has been instrumental in enabling their successful partnership.

Kate Dolan is a passionate coach and rider always looking to achieve quality riding and training results for the success and benefit of both horse and rider. Based on the Gold Coast, Qld, Kate offers a boutique training and coaching facility where she designed the 'Trainer T' for her students.

FEI Driving World Cup launches in Lyon By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA The FEI Driving World Cup™ has taken tradition and given it a modern twist. It’s about power, skill and teamwork where four horses work together as the driver guides them through the course at speed, assisted by two back-steppers, while giving the crowds an experience they won’t forget. Over eight qualifying legs at major indoor shows in Europe between November and January, the world’s top 10 four-in-hand drivers and their equine athletes will vie for six places at the February finals in Bordeaux (FRA) and the chance become the FEI Driving World Cup Season 2023/2024 winner. Defending champion and history’s most garlanded horse fours driver, Australia’s Boyd Exell, has his sights set on an incredible 11th title. Based in Valkenswaard, Holland, where he runs a busy training and event centre, Boyd is not only preparing his own horses but he’s coaching other competitors too. “This season, the margins between the top drivers are tighter than ever, so I’m expecting the results to be really close,” Boyd said. “I’m competing with the same horses that I used all last season when we were so consistent and fast, and ended with the title in Bordeaux. “But when you have the best horses, there is a huge responsibility because you have to perform at your best too and not let them, or the people around you, down – which adds another pressure.” Another driver who is accustomed to the responsibility and expectation that a champion bears is twice winner Bram Chardon (Netherlands) who will compete alongside his father, the great Ijsbrand. Bram, who recently defended his European horse fours title in Exloo, Netherlands, last won the World Cup final in Leipzig (Germany) in April 2022. “Alongside our more experienced horses, we have some new Lipizzaners for this season who will add quality to our indoor teams,” Bram said. “With both of us competing, our planning

The winning podium - left to right - Bram Chardon (NED) - second place; Boyd Exell (AUS) FEI Driving World Cup™ Champion 2023 and Ijsbrand Chardon (NED) - third place at the FEI Driving World Cup™ Final 2023 - Bordeaux (FRA).

has to be strategic, and I don’t want to start my season as late as I did last year, so instead of opening at Geneva, I am a wild card at the second leg in Maastricht. “ The aim is to combine speed and accuracy, which takes time to build up with new horses, but I am feeling really positive.” Another experienced driver who is always in the mix is the Chardons’ long-term teammate Koos de Ronde (Netherlands), who won the FEI Driving World Cup™ gold 10 years ago. His current form bodes well for the series, especially after a superb marathon which helped him to individual silver in Exloo. Making a welcome return after skipping last season due to the birth of her daughter, Germany’s Mareike Harm enters the line-up ranked fifth. She is joined by two more Germans, regular World Cup competitor Michael Brauchle and Georg von Stein, who competes as a qualified athlete for the first time in several sea-

sons. After a successful outdoor campaign in both horse fours and pairs classes, Anna Sandmann (Germany) earned a place having finished in the top ten but decided not to take it up due to business commitments. This opened the door to the Belgian Dries Degrieck, who is now in his third season on the World Cup circuit. He is joined by his regular teammate, Glenn Geerts, who took bronze at the Leipzig final in 2022. Completing the line-up of qualified athletes is another indoor specialist, Jérôme Voutaz (Switzerland) with his compact Swiss horses who are so well-suited to the format. The first three events fall on consecutive weekends, starting at the Longines Equita Lyon Concours Hippique International, where Boyd, Glenn, Jérôme, Dries and Ijsbrand are joined by the host nation’s two wild card entries Benjamin Aillaud and Anthony Horde.  Continued page 31

Boyd is the man to beat in Driving World Cup  From page 30 The spectacle moves onto Maastricht, Netherlands where Koos, Mareike, Michael, Glenn and Georg are the qualified competitors, with Boyd and Bram as wild cards. Stuttgart, Germany is the following weekend, then there is a break before Stockholm, Sweden where Fredrik Persson is confirmed as the wild card. Christmas comes early in Geneva and London with the glitzy, festive arena decorations which adds to the family friendly atmosphere. Shortly after Christmas the focus turns to Mechelen, Belgium before the qualifying legs wrap up in Leipzig where those six finals places will be confirmed. Each of the eight legs has two competitions with a drive-off, run over two days, and the first competition placings set the second round’s running order. Points towards the final are earned from the second competition positions and are given to the five qualifying drivers, not the wild cards. Ahead of the series, each driver will have indicated which legs they wish to attend, and there is

the bonus of an additional outing as a wild card by invitation of the organisers. The first World Cup champion was German legend Michael Freund who took the title five times, sharing it in 2005 with Ijsbrand Chardon, who has been champion on three occasions. The Driving is staged alongside other equestrian disciplines and is a favourite with the crowds who join in and cheer on the teams as they race through the pairs of cones and two

marathon-style obstacles. The format is easy to follow as the aim is to be fastest against the clock while not knocking any balls or elements, which add expensive penalties. The FEI Driving World Cup™ Series is a high-energy experience which raises the roof while showcasing teamwork from both horses and humans. With only the reins in their hands, the drivers must combine lightening-fast reactions with precision under pressure.

While on the back of the carriage, the navigator is in charge of the routes, and the bottom back-stepper provides ballast and keeps the carriage level on the tight turns. All involved need bravery, great communication skills, focus, speed and accuracy – and a bit of luck to keep those balls in place. The Horse Report

The return of Cub’s Classic Horse Float Cub Campers Pty Ltd is introducing the ‘Classic Horse Float’ – Cub’s reimagined classic two Horse Straight Load. Cub is excited to return to their roots with the release of the “Classic” Horse Float. This reimagined classic is a two Horse Straight Load Float perfect for the demands of regional riders and horse people. Designed and built by three generations of active horse lovers, the Classic is designed to elevate you and your horses travelling experience with rugged suspension seamlessly combining with the tough, Australian-made quality Cub is renowned for. The Classic is purpose built for comfortable travelling (Tare: 930kg*, ATM: 2000kg*, Ball weight: 100kg*) with rugged roller rocker leaf spring suspension providing efficient support between the electric braked wheels and chassis. It is the perfect two Horse Straight Load Float for equine transport.

Cub Campers are proud to introduce the ‘Classic Horse Float’ The design of the Classic Horse Float is inspired by the proud history of Cub while also combining the most up to date modern machinery, 3D design and manufacturing process currently used in the Cub factory. Australian Bluescope steel is used to expertly form the chas-

sis ensuring the highest of quality build. This is further reinforced with the body being constructed from Bluescope Zinc Anneal Steel. Inside, the Classic is fitted with a fully padded centre divider and chest bars to keep your horses comfortable, while

the aerodynamic fiberglass roof helps to cut through the air and keep the centre of gravity lower. Finally, sliding windows are included as well as Australian hardwood flooring with a 10year warranty which Cub are proud to have never received a claim on and a removable rubber floor mat. Cub are proud of their build quality and their more than 55 years of Australian-made manufacturing experience. In recognition, for a limited time, the Cub Classic will be available as a special 55 Year Anniversary edition, including a special engraved anniversary plaque. Cub’s modern day “Classic” horse float is a return to familiar territory, taking their original concept and improving it with contemporary design and manufacturing. The result is an instant classic. Grand National 2024 Qualified - Lead Rein, First Ridden & Childs small show Pony Nationals 2023 Qualified - Lead Rein & Small Show Pony Poppet is a divine little mare who turns heads wherever she goes. She loves being the centre of attention, will run to the gate whenever she sees you coming. Poppet is happy for the kids to climb all over her and can be lead in from the paddock, unrugged and saddled up by a child. She has been ridden by children of all ages on and off the lead, been to the beach and on trail rides. There is no dirt in her, but she is forward moving and is green. While she is very easy at home, she has only been to a handful of shows this season due to time restraints and does need a home with a competent child rider to continue her education and to help her gain confidence when off the property. This is a hard sale as I have owned her since a weanling, however I am several years off needing a pony like her for my young daughter. Contact: Alyce Ph: 0439 949 734

Karma Park Kingsman

Price: $ POA 15.1 hh Reg: Registered Arabian Riding Pony and EV Black/Brown Gelding Sire: Wesswoods Raven Caste Dam: Karma Park English Rose Eggsy is a well bred gelding with the looks and movement to be a fantastic child’s hack in the future at royal level and beyond with the right rider. He is easily handled by young teenagers and at his first show was prepped and ridden by a 14yo. Eggsy has spent a limited amount of time in professional training and, while he is quiet, he is still green. He has three comfortable paces and a lovely sitting trot which will make him an excellent rider mount. When in a no-pressure environment Eggsy will happily carry riders of any confidence level but for him to excel in an arena or the show ring he will need a competent set of hands to further his education. He is a real dude and enjoys nothing more than being up at the farm, riding trails, going bareback and rounding up the cattle. He is not matey with other horses and fits into a small herd well or happy to be paddocked by himself. Not fazed by much and super chill Eggsy has a laid-back personality and ready for someone to take him to the next level.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
