Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on the stage. The 34 Australian cast members including actors and puppeteers will create theatrical magic as the life force behind War Horse's storytelling and astonishing puppets. Nick Stafford's stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book, War Horse is a magnificent drama which tells the heart wrenching story of Joey, the beloved horse of a boy called Albert, who is sold to the cavalry at the outbreak of World War I and shipped to France. He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. The authenticity of the horse puppets and their operators have audiences truly believing in them, right down to their mannerisms.

Looking into the history of horse breeding No other animal has helped shape modern human history like the horse. It’s relationship with man is only rivaled by dogs but there is no denying that horses have been at every pivotal stage of man’s development up until the industrial revolution. History suggests that the horse was first domesticated in southern Russia between 6000 - 4000 BC and the first horsemen were the Indo-Iranians and Celts. Archaeological evidence indicates that the first bits were made of wood. However, evidence of planned breeding has a more blurry history. One of the earliest people known to document the breedings of their horses were the Bedouin of the Middle East, the breeders of the Arabian horse. While it is difficult to determine how far back the Bedouin passed on pedigree information via an oral tradition, there were written pedigrees of Arabian horses by AD 1330. The Akhal-Teke of West-Central Asia is another breed with roots in ancient times that was also bred specifically for war and racing. The nomads of the Mongolian steppes bred horses for several thousand years as well. The types of horse bred varied with culture and with the times. The uses to which a horse was put also determined its qualities, from fast horses for

carrying messengers, heavy horses for plowing and pulling heavy wagons, ponies for hauling cars of ore from mines, packhorses, carriage horses and large horses for war. This was particularly the case in Medieval Europe where the ancestors of the great heavy horses of today were developed. During this same time, lighter horses were bred in northern Africa and the Middle East by Muslim warriors, who preferred a faster, more agile horse. When Muslim warriors and European knights collided in warfare, the heavy knights were frequently outmaneuvered. The Europeans, however, soon made up for the lack of speed of their native breeds by incorporating genetic traits from captured oriental horses into their stables.

This cross-breeding led both to a nimbler war horse, such as today's Percheron, but also to created a type of horse, a predecessor to the Thoroughbred, which was used as a message horse. During the Renaissance, horses were bred not only for war, but for refined riding, popular among the nobility. Breeds such as the Lipizzan were developed from Spanish-bred horses for this purpose, and also became the preferred mounts of cavalry officers. It was during this time that gunpowder was developed, and so the light cavalry horse, a faster and quicker war horse, was bred for a `shoot and run’ tactic. After Charles II retook the British throne in 1660, horse racing, which had been banned by Cromwell, was revived. The Thoroughbred was developed 40 years later, bred to be the ultimate racehorse. In the 18th century, James Burnett, Lord Monboddo noted the importance of selecting appropriate parentage to achieve desired outcomes of successive generations. Monboddo worked more broadly in the abstract thought of species relationships and evolution of species. The Thoroughbred breeding hub in Lexington, Kentucky was developed in the late 18th century, and became a mainstay in American racehorse breeding. Continued page 9

Breeding to answer needs  From page 7

The 17th and 18th centuries saw more of a need for fine carriage horses in Europe, bringing in the dawn of the warmblood. The warmblood breeds have been exceptionally good at adapting to changing times, and from their carriage horse beginnings they easily transitioned during the 20th century into a sport horse type. Today’s warmblood breeds, although still used for competitive driving, are more often seen competing in the show jumping or dressage arenas. The Thoroughbred continues to dominate the horseracing world, although its lines have been more recently used to improve warmblood breeds and to develop sport horses. The need for horses for heavy draft and carriage work continued until the industrial revolution and the advent of the automobile and the tractor. After this time, draft and carriage horse numbers dropped significantly, though light rid-

ing horses remained popular for recreational pursuits. Draft horses today are used on a few small farms but today are seen mainly for pulling and plowing competitions rather than farm work. Heavy harness horses are now used as an outcross with lighter breeds, such as the Thoroughbred, to produce the modern warmblood breeds popular in Olympic and sport horse disciplines

Yoodaman Apps launches equine focused mobile apps Yoodaman Apps is pleased to announce the launch of Behoofed, a brand of equinefocused mobile apps for iPhone. “We're very excited about the launch of Behoofed,” founder of Yoodaman Apps, Kim Inglis said. “It's much more than a brand though. It's about providing riders with practical tools to help them gain an edge on the competition.” The first apps to debut are: Jump Fence Heights and Equestrian Course Walk. More Behoofed horse apps are planned for summer 2013. These apps are indispensable training aids for riders of all levels. They offer ease of use with a visually appealing interface. Equestrian Course Walk by Behoofed (ECW) ECW helps riders learn to walk jump courses properly at home and during competition. “Learning to walk a jump course can be daunting for new riders,” Kim said.

Experience the excitement of Equestrian Grand Final EQUITANA Australia is proud to once again partner Equestrian Australia in hosting the most exciting equestrian competition in the country. The Equestrian Grand Final presents a trio of finals that will see the cream of Australian riders and horses in the disciplines of Dressage, Jumping and Exhibition Eventing, come together to compete in the Dome venue at the Sydney Showground this year. Dressage CDI-W Grand prix Friday, November 8 and the CDI-W Freestyle on Saturday, November 9. Fifteen of the top rider and horse combination in the country will be invited to compete at EQUITANA. The selection of these combinations will be via a series of five qualifying competitions, which are held Australia-wide. Jumping World Cup Qualifier Thursday, November 7 (round 1) and finals Friday, November 8. Eighteen of Australia's best World Cup Jumping riders and horses will be invited to compete in these finals. The selection of the combinations will be via a series of five qualifying event held around the country. Exhibition Eventing Friday, November 8. From two qualifying events, the top four riders will automatically qualify for the finals. Equestrian Australia then awards `wild card’ entries for the additional seven riders.

EQUITANA Australia will again be presenting the exciting Equestrian Grand Final in Sydney which see Australia’s best riders and horses in action over three challenging disciplines.

Exhibition eventing consists of the Dressage phase where each combination will perform a dressage test The results of the dressage phase will seed the riders for the jumping phase. The leading combination will start the jumping phase on a score of 0 whilst the

combination in second place will carry through two penalties and the third placed combination will take through three penalties and so on. Then is the jumping phase it will be run in reverse order of standing. The jumping course will be a combination of cross-country and show jump fences. The cross-country fences will be solid fences of up to Equestrian Australia CNC two-star dimensions and the show jumps will be up to CNC 3* dimensions. There will be an optional joker fence (show jump) which will be up to 1.45m in height. If successfully jumped the joker fence will wipe four penalties off the rider’s total score. If the joker fence is knocked down the rider will incur eight penalties! The first two refusals at jumps incur no penalties, only the time taken to represent will disadvantage the rider. However, three refusals on course results in elimination. Riders will be penalised for exceeding the optimum time and also penalised if they complete the course more than five seconds under the optimum time. The rider with the least penalties at the end is the winner. At EQUITANA Sydney this year however, there will be a significant change in the structure of Exhibition Eventing, as we are bringing this action indoors. Most horse owners will have been aware that there has been an offer available over recent weeks for an almost certain to never be repeated opportunity to safeguard your horse, yourself, your family, and all the people who may come in contact with your horse. Yes, the disease is extremely rare and the chances of you being the next unlucky one to experience the disease are very low, but, what if? The special promotional price offer will cease at the end of July. Your horse still requires two initial vaccinations. The timing is now not quite as rigid as it has been as the second dose can now be administered in a window of three to six weeks after the first. This makes it a little easier to comply. The initial batch of vac-

cines was prepared late in 2012 and, under the special permit regulations, all had an expiry date of August, 2013. This means that any vaccine that has not been used by that date, has to be discarded. This certainly does not mean that the current doses are losing their potency. It is just that because the complete registration trials have not been completed, the regulation authorities have had to impose very strict rules. The drug company has taken the opportunity to attempt to use up as much of the prepared product as they can, rather than have to destroy it. This is a great boon for horse owners as it has created an opportunity. But, better be quick as once we get into August, almost certainly the new batch will revert to the old pricing. Surely an even greater incentive to act would have been the report of a new case in the Brisbane Valley. Disturbingly, the reports are that

Now is the time to have your horse vaccinated against the Hendra virus according to Dr David0d Lovell.

this horse presented a little differently again and, particularly early on, there was little indication to suspect that the horse could have been a Hendra case. Complacency can be a great danger and it serves to illustrate that any horse at any time, could possibly carry a risk of shedding deadly virus. Vigilance, hygiene, and awareness are critical whenever dealing with any at horse at any time. The news that a third booster dose is now required at six months post the second shot has upset some people as it now becomes more cost. The trials done on the research horses at six months after the initial vaccinations have been excellent and have exceeded, or at least justified, the expectations of the scientists. There is also a somewhat reduced pricing on this booster at present. What my interpretation of the situation is that once the horse has had the third dose, the expectations should be that there will now be a very excellent level of immunity and protection in those horses. There is very good reason to anticipate that this level would now prevail for at least the following 12 months, possibly longer, and that should be very pleasing to the owners. The 12 month trials are just commencing now and hopefully we will get some results and information filtering through before the end of the year. I feel this uncertainty has been part of the reason for the reduced uptake of the vaccine to date. Owners should now be able to

be much more confident in the excellence of the protection afforded. Another point that must be considered when vaccinating is the possibility of some reaction to the vaccine by your horse. To date, the vaccine has proven to be extremely safe with a remarkably low level of reported complications or reactions. Certainly it would appear that there are not going to be any significant long term effects, but I believe it to be very important for owners to understand that the injection of vaccine is designed to create a reaction, or stimulate an immune response. The reason we give a series of needles is to first of all, `prime’ the body to react to the antigen, and then sequentially increase the level of response so that a high level of immunity and protection result. With this in mind, owners should plan their program a little carefully. If the purpose of each injection is to create a sequentially greater response with each dose, then it would be not unreasonable to expect that individual horses will expect to feel a little stiff or `off’ for a few days after each dose. Therefore, the boosters should be timed so that it is possible to give the animal a few days off after the dose. It is common sense that the horse not be put into work immediately after the vaccination. It is not something unique to Hendra vaccine I cannot urge you enough to contact your vet and make arrangements to take up the current offer. I am very happy to discuss any aspects with anyone on 0419 748 417.

Practise makes perfect for pony club champions The Pony Club NSW State Jumping Equitation Championships hosted by Zone 6, was held over the weekend of May 18 and 19 at the Mudgee Australian Rural Education Centre, Mudgee. Around 170 competitors travelled from all around the state to the event with most competitors and their families camping at the grounds for the weekend. Riders competed in four classes and were judged both on their riding style and control of the horse whilst jumping. According to Jackie Perring, Zone 6 Pony Club Publicity Officer, the weather wasn't very kind but spectators didn't seem to mind the freezing wind as they watched some incredibly talented riders compete in four different classes vying to win the champion title. In the under 13 years age group, Sophie Hamilton-Smith from Quirindi Pony Club in Zone 5 was the age champion. In the 13 and under 15 years age group, Matilda Seppelt from Londonderry Pony Club in Zone 19 took out first place. Georgina Grove in the 15 and under 17 age group from Forest Hills Pony Club Zone 23 was the age champion for the second year in a row while in the 17 and under 25 age group, Alexandra Wolters Mannix from Orange Pony Club in Zone 3 also placed first

for the second year in a row. Alexandra has also won the 2012 Pony Club NSW State Jumping Equitation and 2012

Pony Club NSW State ODE Championships on the same horse. Alexandra's advice to young pony club members hoping to follow in her footsteps was to `Keep trying!’ “I have been attending state championships for equitation, dressage, showjumping and eventing since I was 11 and have always aspired to be one of those riders taking home the champion ribbon,” she said. Alexandra would like to thank Zone 6 and Mudgee pony club for a great event and PCA NSW for supporting all the junior, and senior, riders by holding these state championship events. “They are great fun and I look forward to them every year! My biggest thanks definitely goes to my awesome mum though, imagine putting up with me and taking me to all these events over the years,” she said. The next state events on the Pony Club NSW calendar are the Pony Club NSW State Showjumping Championships which is to be held at Bathurst Showgrounds, Bathurst on July 6 and 7 and the Bombers Australia State Polocrosse Championships which is to be held at Wee Waa Showgrounds, Wee Waa from July 12-14. Showjumpers soon to be crowned at Bathurst This year’s Pony Club NSW State Showjumping Championship will be held at the beautiful and historic Bathurst Showgrounds from July 6 to 7. Riders will be travelling from all over the state as well as Queensland and Victoria to compete at the highest level of pony club showjumping. Strong competition is expected with 170 riders competing across all four age groups for the championship trophy, the champion zone, champion state and the fitness check trophy. Local host Pony Club Zone 3 have 23 riders entered in the competition. According to Bathurst Pony Club, Zone 3 riders have been preparing in the weeks leading up to State Showjumping by attending a number of local pony club competitions in Blayney, Forbes and Geurie as well as EA events such as the Mid Year SJ Championships at Sydney Jump Club and Gunnedah Show. There have also been a number of clinics run by local instructors to fine tune all aspects of the discipline. Entry is free and spectators are most welcome. Spectators can take the opportunity

to relax in the historic grandstands with a real coffee and home-made cake in hand, and choose to view any of the four competition arenas. Keen shoppers can wander through the equestrian trade stands and the dining room will be open to enjoy a warm soup and a steak sandwich. This is a great opportunity for horse lovers young and old to get their equestrian fix in the centre of Bathurst, commented Bathurst Pony Club event organisers. The championship will commence on Saturday from 8:30 am and conclude Sunday afternoon with the mounted presentation ceremony. Pony clubbers can then look forward to Pony Club NSW State Mounted Games Championship which is to be held at Holbrook Equestrian Centre from September 14 to 15. The Pony Club NSW State Showjumping Championships are supported by major sponsor Ranvet, State Championship rug sponsor Flametree Inc, Sport and Recreation a division of Communities NSW, Mitavite official feed partner, as well as other local sponsors. The Horse Report

Time and distance improve soundness tent and progressive training to reach optimal strength. But this early foundation of LSD work only will go a long ways towards preventing injuries. If a horse is put into work without this foundation, he may appear to be coming along nicely in terms of cardiovascular and muscular fitness. But the bottom may drop out at any moment with damage to tendon or ligament. This can occur suddenly, or insidiously and gradually over time. When that happens you are back to square one. Sometimes the old Tortoise and the Hare story is true: slow and steady does win the race.

Supplied by POSITIVE SEAT BALANCE Throughout the world, horsemen and women employ many different methods of conditioning the horse. And indeed there are quite a few different `programs’ that result in a fit athlete. But most programs focus on the aspects of the horse's fitness that are the most visible their musculature and their aerobic capacity (cardiovascular fitness) - without enough thought to strengthening bones, tendons, and ligaments. With a program that does not sufficiently allow for progressive strengthening of those important structures, the risk of injuries in those areas are greatly increased. The key is long slow distance (LSD) training. Horses have evolved to be moving all of the time. Living in a stall 23 hours a day is extremely unnatural for them. Even being locked up half a day is significantly limiting the amount of daily movement that is natural to the horse. When possible, it's best to let horses live naturally, out in a large field. They will be moving much of the time, and will develop fairly strong bones, tendons, and ligaments even with little training under saddle. If living outside in a large field with lots of (preferably rugged) terrain to roam on is not an option, then the LSD must be done under saddle. Lots of LSD (mix of walking and some trotting) initially on firm ground is the best way strengthen bones, tendons, and ligaments. How much? The more the better. But when building fitness from scratch or coming back from injury, start out with 20 minutes and build to an hour or more per day of mostly walking. This is over the course of about a month. To really do it right (which some people don't want to take the time to do), add another month of LSD incorporating more and more trotting, and adding hillwork. Walking up and down hills is one of the most beneficial exercises you can do for your horse - a total body workout with minimal pounding on their legs. After the initial period of strengthening on firm ground, working over a variety of surfaces (from roads or stony tracks to rough or soft, muddy going) is good for developing overall tendon strength and elasticity.

Page 22

Lesley Stevenson Long slow distance training is a good way of helping to prevent injuries in your horse.

Hard ground is the best for strengthening bones, tendons, and ligaments. Rough, uneven, and muddy ground causes slight twisting of the limbs, which stimulates the tendons to adapt to different strains. Don't make the common mistake of only riding on `perfect’ footing. Walking and some trotting work on less than perfect footing will make your horse less prone to injury in the long run. Working on hard ground only will make tendons strong but somewhat inflexible. Working on soft ground only will not develop sufficient bone and tendon strength. A carefully thought out combination of the two is what will produce the best results. Proper shoeing is also an essential part of your plan to condition for soundness. The best advice is to really put in the effort to find the best farrier you have available to you, as the farrier can really make or break your long term efforts to keep your horse sound. When the horse is a solid two months (or more if coming back from injury) into LSD work, bones, tendons, and ligaments are strong enough to start more serious work. Dressage, jumping, and galloping can begin gradually. Continue with the LSD work as well to keep adding to the strength of the foundation. Bones and tendons can take years of consis-

Following the progress of the EQUITANA Walers It is now seven months since the EQUITANA Walers were moved from their wild life and hardships, to wonderful homes with the six chosen trainers. Instead of shivering the winter away and roaming far and wide to find the sparse food available in Central Australia over winter, they are safe and secure in their new paddocks, getting two Mitavite feeds and good hay each day and wearing nice warm rugs for the first time. In the lead up to EQITANA Sydney, it was time to share a bit more of their journey.

Christy Connor and Bill: Bill has also had a nice break from his training while Christy got ready to compete in The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival, in which she took out the Women's Champion title. Christy is really pleased with Bill's progress and believes he has the temperament to be a good trick riding horse. Bill is not quite ready for the pressure of competition yet but Christy is confident about him making his debut later in the year.

Wayne Anderson and Trooper: Wayne has been enjoying his time with Trooper and they have become great friends. Wayne said that Trooper has a wonderful temperament and

loves his work. The pair has made great inroads in driving and Trooper has had a nice break for a month to allow him to just be a horse again. He is back in work again now and if all goes to plan, Wayne will compete with him in the Victorian Winter Indoor Carriage Driving series at the end of July.

Damien Judd and Rupert: After recovering from a broken leg - not caused by Rupert! Damien is now back working with Rupert and he tells us he is going really well under saddle. The combination of calm, relationship training and good diet are working a treat on him and he is turning into a very impressive "hack". Damien plans to take Rupert out to some smaller agricultural shows before bringing him to EQUITANA in Sydney.

pete in the Reining competition at Tatura in Victoria in August.

Michelle O'Neill and Digger: It has turned out that Digger is a prime example of why these wonderful Walers need our help. In February Michelle identified that the lump on Digger's face, which he had when captured, was increasing and size and he was having trouble eating. Poor Digger was diagnosed with a very badly infected tooth that was growing through the side of his face and had to go to the Canberra Equine Hospital for a major operation to remove it. He was very good about it all

and became a favourite with the staff. He still has a way to go before complete recovery.

Steve Halfpenny and Coronation: Steve comes in to take over Coronation from Annie Kesterton. Steve first started riding recreationally in the early 1980s shortly after arriving in Australia from UK. For the following 10 years he dedicated himself to learning all he could about training and riding In 1990 Steve was introduced to a very different approach to Horsemanship when he attended a Pat Parelli clinic and in 1995 he became an instructor.

David Simons and Gunner: David and Gunner have formed a very close relationship and she watches and calls to him the whole time he is working other horses in the arena. David is very pleased with her progress, as she now trail rides happily off the property and he says she is a natural at reining. Gunner will have a good break in late June and then will com-

2013 LOCKYER HORSE EXPO The 2013 Lockyer Horse Expo and Welcome Show will be at the Gatton Show Grounds on September 7 and 8. The Expo runs both days with demonstrations in the indoor area on Saturday, and the Welcome Show is on the Sunday. The Welcome Show -includes a walt/trot ring for more inexperienced riders and first time showies and a lead-line ring with lots of classes for the littlies. Every competitor is guaranteed a ribbon - not in every class, of course but when you are about to go home, if you haven't won a ribbon, come and see us - you will win one to take home! Last year, some people took home dozens of ribbons and prizes and it was their first show ever. Remember, this is run by volunteers so the Expo isn't like Equitana, but in 2012 we managed to put on a pretty good event and most of the businesses, studs and saddleries who came along said they had the best sales and enquiries that they've had at any event. So let everyone in any horse-related business, such as real estate agents who sell horse properties, float builders, stable makers, saddleries, rug makers, feed stores, studs, trainers, instructors, etc. - know about the 2013 Lockyer Horse Expo. The Horse Report

Vitamin C and its benefits for horses By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Scurvy has been with man ever since he lost the ability to manufacture Vitamin C some 60 million years ago. The Ebers papyrus, an Egyptian hieroglyph, indicates that scurvy existed in 1500BC, Hippocrates described a disease that sounds like scurvy in 400BC, and Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79) describes scurvy amongst Roman soldiers in Germany. Whilst it is fairly clear that horses do not suffer from scurvy it is very interesting to note that humans simply lost the ability to manufacture vitamin C and that horses have the ability to synthesize Vitamin C but clearly not a sufficient levels to sustain a high performance level. Vitamin C is the least stable of all the vitamins in its food hosts because it is very sensitive to oxygen and oxidises very quickly. Its activity is lost when exposed to light, heat or air, all of which activate oxidative enzymes. In the middle ages crude methods of preserving food led to the destruction of vitamins. There is a definite link between stress and vitamin C loss, so the higher the level of stress the higher the requirement level of vitamin C. The effect of vitamin C deficiency on the microscopic structure of the tissue is well established. Vitamin C is an essential co-factor for the hydroxylation of proline to hydroxyproline in collagen formation. Collagen is an intercellular ground substance, or matrix, that binds together cells in such tissues as capillaries, bone, teeth and connective tissue. In connective tissue, fibroblasts synthesise the protein collagen, which is excreted from the cell and then formed into extracellular fibrils, strands and bundles. In the absence of vitamin C, new collagen formation ceases and the supporting structures of the connective tissue collapse as the already formed collagen liquefies, cell walls become indistinct, and cytoplasm decreases. Similarly in bones and teeth, the lack of osteoid tissue and dentine in which calcium salts are normally deposited, prevents their firm development. The structural integrity of the body depends on having sufficient vitamin C within your horse’s cells all the time. So there are two factors constantly at work. Firstly there are the nutrients that ensure the efficiency of the structure. Secondly there is the need to make the organ or tissue function. It is therefore true to say that ‘structure governs function’ and that ‘function governs Page 30

Just as vitamin C has been identified as having significant benefits fro humans, so too does it also have benefits for horses.

structure’. Appropriate combinations of nutrients with vitamin C included as a high priority, combined with exercise to the level where the body organs function at their peak, are the most likely ways for the body to retain its body structure without deterioration. In the absence of vitamin C, collagen becomes a watery liquid losing the power to support cells. Naturally when vitamin C is supplied this problem is rectified. The greatest concentration of vitamin C is located in the glandular tissue, the adrenal cortex, pituitary gland, corpus luteum, pancreas, liver and spleen. Any physical stress on the horse’s body such as injury, fractures, surgical procedures cause the cellular concentration of vitamin c to become mobilised, apparently to protect the body’s integrity as a living organism. The role of vitamin C in blood formation has also been clearly established, assisting in the reduction of the ferric iron during its transfer from plasma transferrin to liver transferrin. It also increases iron absorption from the intestinal tract and stimulates incorporation of iron into haemoglobin. It may also be required for the conversion of folic acid into folinic acid. Vitamin C also stimulates white cell activity. Allergies and Vitamin C Allergies can disguise themselves with a multitude of symptoms. These symptoms indicate that the body is reacting to an invasion of the allergen and that an excessive biochemical response has been triggered. Stress equals allergens; as early as the 1930s scientific research was undertaken to determine whether or not vit-

amin C was of assistance in controlling symptoms of allergies. Research has provided mixed views, some saying they had great success others saying they had no success. However success it was discovered was dependant on the dose rate level been high enough. If there is a hostile bacterium present proteins may go off within the intestinal tract causing the digestive route to be incomplete. The amino acid histidine may be converted into a toxic substance, histamine. The body may also create histamine due to the breakdown of body tissue during stress. Vitamin C has an antihistamine effect as it brings back into proportion the number of eosinophils, which are white blood cells one of the immune system components responsible for combating multicellular parasites and certain infections in vertebrates. Along with mast cells, they also control mechanisms associated with allergy which tend to increase during an allergic reaction. A healthy liver has the ability to destroy histamine by using the enzyme histaminase. If the liver is damaged it reduces the chance of producing this enzyme. Horses suffering from oxidative stress or Phase 1 or 2 Detox will increase stress on liver function. A healthy cell will prevent toxic substances from penetrating the cell wall, vitamin C has the ability to strengthen the cell walls and literally make it impervious. Vitamin C has the ability to detoxify unwanted substances that may cause toxicity, it is for these reasons that vitamin C can be of great benefit. Continued page 31

Focus on prevention before treatment From page 30

Bioflavanoids There are three bioflavanoids, rutin, hesperidin and aescin. Bioflavanoids are found in many fruits and vegetables, therefore if you are to use bioflavanoids as a support then it would be necessary to supplement the horse’s diet. Dr Szent-Gyorgyi was the first to demonstrate the effect and benefits of using bioflavanoids by discovering that these substances have a very powerful effect on strengthening the body’s smallest blood vessels, the capillaries. The veins carry the blood back to the heart for re-oxygenation in the lungs; the arteries then circulate the blood to the rest of the body. This system is waterproof and the capillary system, which is the link between the tiniest arteries (the arterioles) and the tiniest veins (the venules) allows nutritious fluid to seep out of the blood stream into the fluid surrounding the cells. After the cells have used what is required, the balance is pushed back into the capillaries by hydrostatic and osmotic pressure caused by blood and blood proteins. It is vital that the capillaries do not become too permeable, as this would cause the blood to leak into the intercellular fluid. For example in a human if you can see bruising near the surface of the skin this means that the capillaries have become broken. If the capillaries were too porous there would not be sufficient osmotic pressure to move the accumulated intercellular back into the blood stream and at this stage oedema would build up. When part of the body suffers an injury, open wound or an infection the injury site swells with

fluid. This happens because the capillaries pull apart to allow the white blood cells to enter the area and fight invading microorganisms. Using anti-inflammatory drugs or diuretics may not be the best thing to do as this is simply slowing down the natural healing process. It appears through many studies that bioflavanoids and vitamin C work closely together and can be of enormous benefit in treatment, as they are found in nature in conjunction with vitamin C. Bioflavanoids appear to potentiate the action of vitamin C proportionately they are required in smaller quantities to achieve a result. If there is a bioflavanoid deficiency the capillary walls become so porous that red corpuscles pass through them into the tissues.

It looks very similar to that of a coarse sieve under a microscope. This situation allows invasion into the cells of unwanted toxic substances that will in turn cause illness. Vitamin C can be used to improve the horse’s health and well being, being used in conjunction with other supporting nutrients can be of enormous benefit to your horse. My choice of vitamin C is usually in the form of calcium ascorbate, this is the most gentle on the horse’s gut. Horses do not require high levels of Vitamin C, and quite simply if high levels are given to the horse he or she will simply pass the excess out of the system as vitamin C is water soluble. The WTP (Winning Tongue Plate) normal plate bit design the difference between winning and losing an event. Used by leading trainers Brian Smith, David Hayes, Dave Kelly, Mark Kavanagh, Olympic riders Megan Jones and colt breakers and Olympian riders Blair Richardson, Peter McMahon and Julien Welsh rating it the best bit on the market and like having power steering reforming some of the worst hangers and problem horses. The WTP bit is the only bit in the world to win a prestigious Australian international design award. It is well documented that jointed snaffle bits cause roof rubbing and bit pinching causing pain signals to spread to any other branch of the same facial nerve, resulting in pain in areas of the face that have no direct contact with the bit - resulting in head shaking, pulling, rearing, bucking, mouth opening and poor performance. The WTP centre flat plate is up to 14mm lower than other bit joints allowing more room between the tongue and the roof of the mouth preventing all mouth issues. Exposed jointed snaffle bits create up to 300kg of pressure pinching the tongue down to centimetres. Whereas the WTP Bit encased joint prevents the arms folding down, and the 6.5 square cm low profile plate creates a softer surface area reducing the bit pressure by about 85%. The WTP bit arms have limited travel to reduce outer ring pressure to the cheeks and lips when working a horse in a straight line. The only time cheek pressure is required when turning your horse. Further the bit arms do not hinge downward thereby preventing pain to the roof, tongue and bars. Another great benefit of the WTP Ring bit the large ring runs through the plate. Therefore, no small annoying retaining ring required. The wait is over to prevent and fix mouthing issues contact your local saddlery for a WTP bit.

BONE POWER

Calcium Complex for maximum bioavailablility

Targeting healthy bone development and remodelling for horses grazing high oxalate pastures. Oxalates are found naturally in some tropical grasses and phytates are found in some grains. The oxalates and phytates bind to the calcium, making it unavailable to the horse, dramatically decreasing the calcium available. If deficiencies continue, the horse will take the calcium needed for heart and muscle from the bones, leading to de-mineralisation. This can cause swelling of the facial bones, lameness, weight loss and dental problems. When grazing tropical grasses such as kikuyu, buffel, pangola, setaria, stargrass and panics it is recommended that horses receive daily calcium supplementation. Vitamite Bone Power™ is a palatable, high-dose Calcium Supplement, prepared using advanced complexing technology to optimize calcium bioavailability. This protects the calcium during the digestion process and enhances its absorption across the intestinal wall, improving its bioavailability.

Trace Minerals 1% Magnesium 3% Fat 5% Phosphorus 18% Calcium 22%

Protein 26%

Water 25%

Bone Power™ contains a significantly large dose of vitamin D to enhance Calcium uptake and high doses of B vitamins, trace minerals essential for bone health and is formulated to restore the Calcium-Phosphorus balance in horses on high grain or high phytate diets. Vitamite Bone Power™ is available in 5kg & 20kg pails
