Australian Eventing Teams announced By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Receiving an excellent number of Expression of Interest applications from Equestrian Australia’s well-performed Eventing combinations, the Eventing selectors had some difficult considerations to make to select just one Senior Team and one Young Rider Team to represent Australia at the 2024 Oceania Championships to be held in New Zealand alongside the Land Rover Horse of the Year from 5th – 10th March in Hastings. The Oceania Championships provide athletes an opportunity to gain Championship-level experience as a part of a representative team within the region. Historically, the EA High Performance Program’s strategy for the event is dedicated to developing emerging combinations, and for the Young Riders selected in 2024, this will be their first appearance on an Australian squad. On this occasion however, EA High Performance Director, Will Enzinger, said with the Olympics just around the corner, there is a need to prioritise this exposure piece in line with the intended performance outcome in Paris. “The 2024 Senior Oceania Team will, therefore, be selected with the mindset of exposure for less experienced combinations on their campaign to Paris,” he said. Congratulations to the following selected

combinations and their connections. Oceania Championships Senior Team Andrew Barnett & Go Tosca (owned by Kate Burnheim) Oliver Barrett & Sandhills Special (owned by Prue Barrett) Olivia Barton & Henrik APH (owned by Carlene Barton) Kenya Wilson & Sandros Salute MW (owned by Lynette Winteringham, Ian Campbell and Kenya Wilson.) Mc Dermott wins FEI Jumping World Cup By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA

The final leg of the 2023 Australian World Cup Qualifying Series wrapped up at the Sydney Summer Classic Show at Sydney International Equestrian Centre in December. Starting back at Shepparton in March, the eighth and final leg to determine who would qualify to represent Australia at the World Cup Finals, scheduled to take place in Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia next April, sawTom McDermott and Cooley Gangster came into this event in the lead on 78 points from Sarah McMillan and Madeline Sinderberry both tied in second place on 71 points. With the competition moved forward to a 9am start to beat the expected extreme temperatures in the afternoon, it was the Queensland combination of Sam Overton and Oaks Cassanova who took the prize. No strangers to success at this level, this combination who won the 2022 series and represented Australia at the world cup finals in Omaha, Nebraska in April earlier this year, were the only combination to master the course, putting together two clear rounds over what everybody agreed was a difficult track. Tom and Cooley Gangster, who took a rail in the first round before a clear second round in 52.92 seconds, secured second place in the class ahead of Billy Raymont

and Caprino who finished with a total of four faults, due to a second-round time of 58.18, which incurred four time penalties. As a result of their consistent performances over the year Tom secured the

Australian League Title and Cooley Gangster was awarded the Golden Grand prize for the best performed horse over the course of the eight-leg-series.

Coping with heat stress - anhydrosis By DAVID LOVELL BSVS Well here we go again. Summer is now officially here but the way the days have been, one would have thought it started several weeks ago. It has been very hot and the likelihood is that it will only become hotter. Even more of concern is the prediction that we are in for a El Nino summer which can mean above average rainfall. Combined with the heat, the humidity will become oppressive. Most of us hide in the shade, avoid any strenuous activity, and do whatever we can to keep cool. All animals are stressed by heat but most are able to similarly take steps to adapt to the climate. Our horses are the same and if left alone, they cope well enough. However, the nature of their primary use, being ridden in some form of human pleasure activity, (rarely work these

in the heat. Hopefully we can give horses a similar benefit. When the horse commences to exercise and muscle contracts, energy must be utilised to power the muscle contractions. Biochemical pathways in the muscle fibres process energy stored in the tissues. This energy is obtained from feed in the digestive system and stored as fat and starch. The process of converting stored energy into mechanical energy for muscle contraction is very inefficient and at least 60% is wasted and lost as heat energy. This has the effect of raising the core muscle and body temperature. As we all know, horses are very powerful animals with an enormous muscle mass. As these muscles work, an unbelievable amount of heat is generated in the muscle mass. Nature dictates that for survival, the body temperature has to be maintained at very close to 38 degrees and so it is important for the body to be able to get rid of this wasted heat energy when exercising. In the horse, most heat dissipation is via the evaporation of sweat and radiation from the skin into the surrounding atmosphere. When the environmental temperature is in the mid 20s and humidity is low, this process is

quite efficient and the horse remains comfortable. In mid summer when the temperatures are in the low 30s and humidity is high, heat loss is very inefficient and the horse overheats. Nerve centres in the brain respond to this and in an attempt at self-preservation, the horse starts to pant and breathe rapidly as another attempt at heat loss by exchange of heat with the environmental air breathed into the lungs. Compare this with the dog, which does not sweat at all and relies entirely on panting for heat loss. Anhydrosis or "Puffs" is a condition in horses where basically the sweat glands lose the ability to function. This is thought to be the result of an extended period of over stimulation of the glands to the point where they lose the ability to respond to adrenalin and simply "wear out". CLINICAL SIGNS: o Absence of sweat - partial or complete o Panting respiratory rate even at rest, but particularly after exercise o Hair loss, particularly around the face and neck o Exercise intolerance o General depression and ill thrift  Continued page 11

Heat affects nearly all horses adversely  From page 10

DIAGNOSIS: o Clinical signs and physical examination o Adrenaline tests - different concentrations of adrenaline are injected under the skin and the local sweating response is assessed. However, many horses that have temporary sweating problems will respond normally to these tests giving many false negatives. I believe clinical signs and history are probably enough to make a diagnosis. Owners who have researched the issue, often ask for an adrenalin test, which is theoretically the correct thing to do, but unfortunately an unwanted side effect is the development of an unsightly patch of white hair at the site. The most common question or symptom that clients see is the panting or rapid respiration. Many owners suspect that there is a respiratory problem with their horse. It is fair to say that nearly all horses in our region are affected to some degree and most will "puff" after exercise. In particular, racehorses can be very severely affected because of the tremendous energy requirements for a race. They very often overheat and it is a very common cause of poor performance and loss of form.

Do whatever you can to cool the horse. TREATMENT: o There is no treatment, the problem is the environment. o No medications are effective! o Do whatever you can to cool the horse, hosing, ice boots, swim, fans, etc. all play a part but nothing counteracts the effects of a 35C day o Always ensure your horse has access to plenty of water MANAGEMENT and PREVENTION: This is primarily an environmental condition and the underlying problem is that the horse is poorly adapted to living in the tropics. The heat affects nearly all horses adversely and most are uncomfortable during the hot time of the year.

Fortunately very few of these horses in this area progress to true clinical anhydrosis. Places like Townsville and Cairns and in particular, Singapore, have many clinical horses. In our climate, most horses can be perfectly functional during the rest of the year when conditions are more equitable. If your horse is seriously affected, the simplest thing is simply to spell the horse over the really bad months and plan your training and competition for the rest of the year. Fortunately most of the competitive year in most sports complies with this approach. If you have to train your horse during the bad months, most people tend to get up and

work the horse early in the morning. I firmly believe this to be an incorrect approach and very often the early mornings are extremely hot and humid, the horse heats up, and then the day simply becomes more and more oppressive. It is usually much more satisfactory to work the horse in the early evening when at least the worst heat of the day has passed and in most cases, there is at least a strong breeze to help dissipate the heat and evaporation from sweat. If you feel your horse is having some problems, you should consult with your veterinarian. The horse should be examined to ensure there is no underlying respiratory system problem, and then a plan developed to allow the best management of the horse. Nearly all horses with heat intolerance can be managed to allow them to perform satisfactorily for the rest of the year. The majority of horses will commence sweating again later in the cooler months and be perfectly normal until the next summer. Sufficient to say is that common sense should prevail, and this is a very good time of the year to give our horses a break. Let them relax, avoid the sometimes serious effects of stress on the animal, and come back refreshed as soon as the hot humid conditions end.

How to feed a horse that won’t sweat By FEEDXL EQUINE NUTRITION TEAM Anhydrosis, or the inability to sweat, is a serious condition that affects horses in hot and humid climates. Horses rely heavily on sweating to cool themselves down and keep their core body temperature within a normal range. Sweat wets the horse’s skin and then as it evaporates it takes heat with it, effectively creating an evaporative cooling system for the horse. In some horses however, for reasons largely still unknown, a horse’s sweat glands either partially or fully quit producing sweat. These horses find it very difficult to stay cool and need to resort to offloading heat via their lungs by breathing harder and faster than you would expect them to, which is why horses with this condition are often said to ‘have the puffs’. In many situations though, puffing is not effective enough, so horses that can’t sweat are at serious risk of hyperthermia which wreaks all sorts of havoc in the body and if not dealt with effectively will eventually result in death. The right feeding strategy may help While we don’t understand what causes anhydrosis it does appear that for some horses certain nutritional strategies can help. Tips for feeding horses with anhydrosis include: 1. ALWAYS MEET ELECTROLYTE REQUIREMENTS IN THE DIET

Salt licks will help meet the horses requirements

It is likely some horses stop sweating simply because they run out of electrolytes. The major electrolytes found in sweat are sodium, chloride and potassium. The two most commonly deficient electrolytes in a horse’s diet are sodium and chloride and these are the components of ordinary old salt. Use FeedXL to assess your horse’s requirement for the electrolyte minerals and use plain salt and/or an electrolyte supplement to meet requirements. Horses on forage-based diets should be receiving lots of potassium from their forage

so in most cases all you need to add is plain salt. 2. ALWAYS PROVIDE ACCESS TO FREE CHOICE ROCK SALT A horse will seek salt out when it knows it needs it, so providing free access to loose rock salt allows them to eat as much or as little as they need to meet their requirements. In very hot and humid climates avoid the use of salt blocks as it is difficult for a horse to lick enough salt off to meet requirements when they need a lot of salt.  Continued page 13

Meeting your horse’s requirements  From page 12 3. FEED CONTROLLED AMOUNTS OF PROTEIN Diets that are too high in protein have a couple of negative effects on horses that can’t sweat. The first is that protein generates a lot of heat during the process of digestion and metabolism which adds to the heat load a horse needs to get rid of to keep its body temperature normal. For most horses this is usually not an issue as they are able to sweat and easily dissipate the excess heat. But when a horse isn’t able to sweat, it just makes their job of staying cool even more difficult. The second is that when protein is fed in excess the horse needs to get rid of the excess nitrogen contained in the protein. In a healthy horse the kidneys perform this task without hassle. But a lot of water and electrolyte are excreted with the nitrogen, so potentially it can lead to dehydration and electrolyte deficiency, neither of which will help a horse that can’t sweat properly in the first place. To keep protein in diets low, restrict the amount of forages and feeds that are high in protein like lucerne, copra meal, lupins, faba beans, sunflower/soybean/canola meals, pollard and rice bran and rely more on grassy pasture and hay, oils, low protein fibres like beet pulp and lower protein cooked cereal grains (where it is safe to do so). FeedXL will help you to keep track of the amount of protein in your horse’s diet. 4. FOR HORSES IN WORK, CONSIDER USING A LOWER FORAGE DIET When the fibre contained in forages is fermented in the hindgut a lot of heat is produced which then increases the amount of heat a horse needs to get rid of to keep its body temperature normal. By reducing the amount of forage and therefore the amount of fibre in a diet you will reduce the heat load placed on a horse. To maintain the horse’s required energy intake you can add oil (the best option as it produces the least heat) and/or cooked grains to the diet. It is essential that you feed

Always make sure your horse has access to fresh clean cool water.

well-cooked grains, with extruded grains being the best option, as the starch contained within these grains will be digested in the small intestine. Feeding uncooked or poorly cooked grains will lead to a lot of fermentation and heat production in the hindgut and should be avoided for all horses in hot climates. Please note: Never reduce forage intake below 1 kg/100 kg of bodyweight and be mindful of the increased risk of stomach ulcers for horses on low forage diets. Using slow feeders is highly recommended. It is also essential to have your horse’s stomach full of forage before it is worked. 5. MAKE SURE THE DIET YOU FEED IS BALANCED There is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that some mineral and vitamin deficiencies may contribute to a horse’s inability to sweat. The best way to counteract this is to make sure what you are feeding is meeting all of your horse’s requirements for macro and trace-minerals and vitamins. FeedXL will make sure you can achieve this! If you have a horse with anhydrosis it is strongly recommended you seek veterinary

advice. Aggressive environmental management of these horses to keep them cool is the best way to manage their condition. USEFUL MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES INCLUDE: 1. Always provide access to shade and cool to cold drinking water. 2. Keep them under fans and water misters where possible during the day. 3. Turn them out at night only if possible. 4. Only work them if your veterinarian advises it is safe to do so and then only work them during the very early morning when it is coolest and only to the level they can comfortably handle. 5. Cool them down quickly and effectively with hosing and fans post work until their rectal temperature has returned to normal. 6. If these strategies aren’t effective in keeping your horse’s body temperature within a safe range, the horse will need to be moved to a cooler climate. Often, and again for reasons we don’t understand, horses will start to sweat again when they move to a cooler environment.

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Connecting with animals Wendy J Animal Connections

Suuplied by WWW.WENDYJANIMALCONNECTIONS.COM.AU

How do intuitive sessions work? Intuition works by the transfer of energy between two energetic beings. I can’t explain it, I just know it works. Quantum physicists can explain it and there are some very good books on the subject. Contact me to find out which books are my favourites on the topic. Do I need to visit your animal in person? No, I don’t need to visit. All I need is a photograph of their face and basic details. I have worked with animals all over the world from my home office in Queensland. How do you do your sessions? I conduct my sessions remotely via a photograph and basic information about your animal (name, age and sex). After intuitively connecting with them, I can hold a conversation, much like I could have with you over the telephone or in person. I get words, see images like photographs and sometimes little movies of things that have happened. Sometimes I hear sounds, or get smells and tastes. Sometimes, I just “know”, like I did with our own horses. As the session progresses, I take notes and afterwards, I type up a full transcript of what your animal has told or shown me. After you have had time to read and think about the results, I am happy to reconnect briefly if you need clarification or more information. What do I need to do after I book a session? After you book your session, you need to send me a photograph of your animal’s face and basic details of name, age and sex, plus your questions for them. You can do this via my email nw.jones@bigpond.com, Facebook Messenger on my Wendy J Animal Connection page, or if you are in Australia by text to 0427 965 393. When will my session be done and when will I receive the transcript? I aim to conduct all sessions (except Emergency sessions) within a week of them being booked. If I know I won’t be able to do that, I will let you know. Emergency sessions I aim to do within a few hours of them being booked, if not straight away. If I can’t do that, I will give you the opportunity to find another animal communicator.

Radiographic proof in clinical results By Dr ANDREW WATTS BVSc Equine Veterinarian

VETERINARY RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT

BONE Gold nutritional bone joint and collagen supplement was formulated to provide some of the essential amino acid requirements of collagen type I, II and III (found in bone and connective tissue) in addition to supporting the nitric oxide pathway which has been found to assist in the formation of bone callus postinjury. Veterinary surgeons have recommended that Bone Gold may assist with sore shins, tendon injuries, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis and post-surgery in horses and polyarthritis, geriatric osteoarthritis, and post-surgery in dogs. Here is a veterinary radiographic report on a horse with a fracture evident on the medial toe and after treatment and feeding Bone Gold during this period. More information on these products can be found at www.vetgold.com.au

Become a Certified Internal Hoof and Mouth Specialist Provided by ANGEL’S ANIMALS www.holisticanimalstudies.org This Internal Hoof and Mouth Specialist certification course takes a holistic view when teaching the anatomy and physiology of the horse's hooves and mouth (bonus material). Bring your equine practice to the next level by learning how the foot of the horse can impact their health and wellbeing. The course includes high quality photographs including hoof dissections and explains the importance of having an in depth understanding of the internal and external hoof and mouth anatomy. The horse's feet play a large roll in their soundness and overall wellbeing. As an equine bodyworker, expanding your knowledge of equine anatomy will allow you to make more educated decisions when creating individualized treatment plans for your clients. This course was a collaboration between Dr Angel and Jennifer Thackery. Dr Angelique Barbara (affectionately called Dr Angel by many of her clients) is a Doctor of Chiropractic who holds additional degrees in Veterinary Science (B.S.), Equine Science (Minor) and Veterinary Pathobiology (M.S.). Dr Barbara has been passionate about animals her entire life and has spent the majority of her life studying animals (both in the classroom and in the field). She developed her first animal bodywork seminar in 2009. Since that time, her seminars have grown both in number and popularity and she has fine tuned her seminars and techniques to optimize the learning experience. Dr Barbara was one of the first practitioners to start utilizing kinesiology tape on animals and she was so impressed with the results that she decided to develop an entire seminar dedicated to the taping applications she developed. Her background in both the clinical and research animal health care world as well her experience as a human chiropractor give her a unique perspective on animal bodywork, which is evident in her courses.

Dr Angelique Barbara & Jennifer Thackery course instructors

Dr Barbara has publications in the Journal of Veterinary Science and Microbiology and has presented her research at the Conference of Researchers in Animal Disease (CRAWD) and the International Equine Conference of Laminitis and Diseases of the Hoof. She is a member of Alpha Zeta Honorary Fraternity, American Quarter Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association and French Bulldog Rescue Network. She is also the founder of Angel's Animal Sanctuary, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit home for rescued animals. Jennifer Thackery has been active in the veterinary and equine nutrition arena for over 27 years. Working as a veterinary technician, teaching at the local business college in their veterinary assistant program and developing their accredited equine program and also teaching classes along with small animal courses. She studied Naturopathy and Holistic Nutrition in graduate school long after her Bachelors Degree in Biology with an emphasis on pre-veterinary science. Jen went on to find a company that resonated with her belief system that all bodies, human and animal, can heal themselves when they are provided the proper support. She has aligned herself with that company, Dynamite Specialty Products, as an advocate

for horses and horse rescues for 16 years. She also volunteered as the only local large animal humane agent for nine years and she worked for the city as a small animal humane agent. She was the education chairman years ago for what was the largest umbrella equine group in their region of the United States, the Northland Horseman's Association, and she wrote equine health articles for their publications. Jen also developed an interest in barefoot trimming and has been successfully trimming her own horses for four years. She has completed the Angel's Animals Equine Myo-manipulative Functional Therapy course and earned her Equine Craniosacral Certification and is currently working on the Animal Neuro-myofascial Release Technique Course. She has pursued these courses not as a business venture but rather to help her own horses and rescues. Jen resides in northern Minnesota on a beautiful 40 acre farm along with their 4 horses, Caz (a little Lustiano rescue), Serene (an Andalusian rescue mare), Siroco (an Andalusian gelding) and Gio (Georgian Grande). What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand out in a cluttered market? There are in fact many reasons. It all starts

with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. Summer dust and how to manage it By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Dip. Nut. © 2017 Although the Australian summer can provide a subtle change from the chilly winter days, the prolonged dry heat can turn those muddy paddocks into arid pens. This may be an aesthetic inconvenience or just a typical part of the Australian summer but beneath the surface it can pose a serious health risk not only to us but for our horses as well. While respiratory diseases are multi-factorial, exposure to dust is well-known as an environmental factor in the occurrence and of airway disease and complications. Many studies have shown the relevance of dust exposure in respiratory disease progression in horses. One study, published by the Research in Veterinary Science examined the variance of dust particles in stables throughout the seasons and found an increased level of mould and endotoxins in the summer months in the enclosed space. Clinical signs of dust inhalation can vary from reduced performance to chronic coughs and nasal discharge, like what we experience as humans. In unavoidable dusty situations such as barren regions of Australia or even just taking your horse to and from events, we believe in preventative measure is beneficial in protecting the horse from potential damage. Our Breathe formula contains a high concentration of therapeutic herbs which have antitussive, anti-inflammatory, mucilaginous and antibacterial properties; these constituents line the respiratory tract and prevent damage and irritation from particle inhalation as well as binding to these particles and clearing them out of their system. So if you find your horse in these situations we highly recommend the use of Hi Form Breathe to protect your horse. As well as dusty paddocks, stable air and feed are other major contributors to chronic airway diseases in horses and humans, due to the levels of moulds and endotoxins in the dust. This is just exacerbated in summer as the moisture dries up and Page 26

Dust exposure, especially in warmer months, can lead to respiratory disease in horses. creates more airborne particles. But how do you feed without the dust? Lightly dampening the feed may work, however moving to a dust free feed is advisable. Such dust free feeds can be found in Hi Form Harry’s Choice range - they are all dust free. How is this possible? Well it is due to the elevated level of cold-compressed, organic oil in the feeds. Not only does it provide a high value nutritional component but it also binds all the components of the feed. Therefore, when you feed your horse, their muzzles aren't engulfed in dust particles and they can eat and breathe comfortably. What about the paddocks and

stables? Manure that has been left out in the sun and heat for extensive periods of time can form into small particles and be blown into dust. Studies have found these particles are more readily absorbed into the respiratory tract due to their small size and more likely to contribute to disease due to the bacteria content. We suggest picking up manure which is in communal areas to prevent further dust formation. Good ventilation in barns and stables is vital to reduce the build-up of dust in an enclosed area. Ensuring barns and stables are constructed with good ventilation allowing for airflow will reduce the growth of moulds

and bacteria as well as allow airborne particles to leave the space. Hi Form’s Harry's Choice, named in honour of strong-willed jockey, Harry Coffey will battled Cystic Fibrosis, is proud to be supporting the CF Federation Australia. Colt starting and the lessons learned By TANJA KRAUS I'm excited to be back doing some colt starting. A mentor of mine once said, ‘you are either a great colt starter or a great performance trainer, you can't be both’. I would definitely agree in that your focus on colts versus your focus on performance will greatly differ. I have always done colts in 'blocks' and not taught any clinics during that time. I don my colt starting hat for a month or six weeks, allowing a refinement to the work, and then I go back to performance work. A significant difference between colt starting and performance training is the freedom. A performance horse is refined in his work - you promote an attention to detail in carriage, biomechanics, accuracy. With colts, it's the opposite. By allowing a colt to travel without micro managing their movement, you are provided with valuable feedback, which is the difference between 'I'm ready to ride' and 'step on now and you are in for the ride of your life'.

Working with colts is much different to working with performance horses.

Things that may be considered 'undesirable' from my performance horse are the very things that help me read the colt - from sticky feet to dissociation, pixie ears to a j tail - these are all ways for you to see your colt telling you 'I'm not ok' and 'I'm not sure'. Colt starting is a specialised field and shouldn't just be left to the guy 'brave enough to ride a buck' or the 'performance horse

Trainer T shirt improves rider alignment By KATE DOLAN The greatest gift for a rider is a good position and set of aids, using body awareness, centering and imagery. These classical principles of riding make it more enjoyable for the horse and rider partnership. It's so easy to forget that the only way we can truly improve the horse is through the correct riding position and aids. For example, in order to achieve straightness in the horse, you first have to straighten yourself, starting by becoming aware of your own ‘crookedness’ before you can even tell in what way the horse is crooked. The Trainer T was developed for my students to smooth this pathway and feel the right response in the horse. This simple visual tool helps riders to understand and correct upper body alignment and has been most effective for all riders from beginners to advanced riders. I understand the upper body position is only part of the package, but it is an essential ingredient for success. The results and feedback are exciting and worth sharing. Feedback from riders using th Trainer T includes: * I love this T because mum and dad can easily see and help me correct my position * I started riding taller as soon as I put it on!

The Trainer T is the perfect tool to improve posture, balance and seat. * I'm consistently getting the correct canter lead. * It's so much easier to control my horses shoulders now my position has improved. * I am able to keep the correct bend on both reins. * I've already improved from a 6 - 8 in my collective mark for position. Many of my students have won major events throughout Australia and the Trainer T has been instrumental in enabling their successful partnership.

A passion for Vaulting and amazing horses By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Marlia (Marly) Stewart certainly embodies the title of this article. EA recently met Marly at the National Vaulting Championships held at Sydney International Equestrian Centre and was impressed by her enthusiasm for and dedication to Vaulting. It was a joy to watch Marly, who will soon turn 14, compete on her new horse Rapha and chat with her about this sport that she clearly loves and has a talent for. 1) Tell us about how you first became involved in Vaulting. I've been around horses practically my whole life, it started with equine therapy at three-years-old, then onto casual riding lessons and just out in the paddocks having fun with friends. But because I could never sit still on a horse, always putting a leg behind my head or trying to bend into a split somehow, my coach at the time, Donna, suggested my mum take me to see a lady, Karen Mitchell, in Oakville. My mum made the appointment. I didn't really ask any questions and turned up to a sport we had never heard of before. I remember being blown awa. I was in awe of all the older girls in the club and all the movements they could do on a horse. 2) What do you love most about this sport? I love everything about Vaulting but two things that stand out is the Vaulting commu-

from Wellington Park that has been the light of my life and my greatest accomplishment. He is young and new to the sport but already has competed at State and Nationals and is progressing with incredible horse scores. He is a big part of my family and I am very proud to be learning all of the skills associated with developing a vaulting horse.

3) What are the elements of the sport you find most challenging? In Australia, Vaulting is a small and growing sport and we have limited resources. We are blessed to have had some incredible world champion vaulters visit Australia for clinics which has been awesome. But as an example we drive over four hours round trip twice per week to get access to my coach, Ginger Kennett from Wellington Park, and to use their Movie (vaulting simulator) which I'm sure is one of only two in NSW.

6) What are your short term and longer term goals? My short term goal is to continue to work with Rapha and to progress his vaulting education to higher levels and potentially buy a second horse. My family is relocating to the Gold Coast and my mum and I are looking forward to starting our own Vaulting club on the Gold Coast which we are excited to launch in 2024. I would love to go to Europe for a Vaulting clinic in 2024 and watch the World Championships in Switzerland. My long term goal is to compete at the Junior World Championships in Europe in 2027 when I am 17.

4) Who have been your role models? Anthony Bro Petit, Lambert Leclezio and in particular Georgie and Ginger Kennett. Watching them has taught me, to think outside the box and seek coaching and clinics where you can find them, and it's the work you do in the dark or behind closed doors that really counts. They make me feel that no goal is too big and to go after my dreams with everything I've got. 5) What have been your biggest achievements to date? In Vaulting, we are very lucky that we don't need to own our own horses as we use the club horse coached and trained by the owner/lunger. I have been blessed and feel incredibly grateful to have competed on Bailey from Capriole Vaulting for five years where I have

7) What would you say to anyone thinking about trying out vaulting? Just do it, it's so much fun and it's such a welcoming community. Marly Stewart and Ginger Kennett.

Campionessa a magic star for Te Akau Supplied by MAGIC MILLIONS In a gutsy performance, Campionessa held out the Australian raider, No Compromise, to win the Group One Zabeel Classic race in New Zealand on Boxing Day, 2023. It was a third group win in a row for the daughter of Contributer, who was a $60,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale buy for Te Akau's David Ellis from the Westbury Stud draft. Tracking the speed for much of the race, Campionessa found herself in a tight and tricky spot between runners, but she showed guts to force between runners and work to the front. No sooner had that happened and No Compromise was charging on the outside, but the favourite switched legs and found another gear late to win. "Things didn't go right in the early part of the spring," co-trainer Mark Walker said. "So we just gave her a break and she's come back in such great form. "When a mare gets in form they usually hold it as well. She deserved that - she'd had a couple of seconds in Group Ones, it's great for the ownership group. "The ex-wife was trying to hold him (Opie Bosson) in there a little bit. But he got Spratty out the way and then it was pretty good. She dug deep to win - that was great! "It was brilliant for the mare. We will just let the dust settle for the mare. She's nominated for all of those big races. "Now she's got a Group One on her CV we will probably need to look at something in Australia." The effort from Campionessa impressed star rider Opie Bosson, who rounded out the Pukekohe card with five winners. "It was a good effort," Bosson said. "She's tough to pick herself up from that and then fight off the other challenger. "She deserves that Group One. She got a lot of confidence back after that win two starts back and she showed that again last time." As well as her outstanding race record, Campionessa possesses a first class pedigree - being one of three stakes winners for her dam. Bred by Simms Davison of Mapperley Stud,

The sensational run for the all conquering Te Akau Racing operation rolled on at Pukekohe in New Zealand when star mare Campionessa scored a classy win in the Group One Zabeel Classic (2050m).

Campionessa is from the grand producing O'Reilly mare Bella Carolina - a three time winner in her own right. Successful at distances to 1400 metres, Bella Carolina is the dam of Campionessa as well as stakes winners Leedox and Tennessee. Bella Carolina in turn is from from a Centaine half sister to Group One Metropolitan Handicap winner, Dress Circle. Campionessa is the latest star Group One winner for Te Akau purchased from the Gold Coast. Others to carry the famous tangerine and blue colours to victory after a Magic Millions purchase include superstar sprinter Imperatriz, crack young stallion Sword of State, former NZ Horse of the Year Princess Coup and Costa Viva and Tell a Tale. Meanwhile, Magic Millions graduates swept the Caulfield features on a big Boxing Day card with Zennzella (Snitzel) and Sghirripa (Lonhro) delighting their connections with black type successes. Zennzella, a Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy

from Baramul Stud and then National Broodmare Sale buy from the Newgate Consignment, was back to her best with a win in the Magic Millions Lord Stakes. The Maher and Eustace trained mare provided a timely pedigree boost for her full sister by Snitzel heading to January's 2024 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is Lot 384 in the Baramul Stud draft. Untapped Adelaide sprinter Sghirripa provided the father-daughter training team of Shane and Cassie Oxlade with a late Christmas present when she scored an effortless win in the Listed Christmas Stakes. A winner of six of his 13 lifetime starts, Sghirripa burst through between runners in the straight under Craig Newitt for an impressive win. Connections purchased the son of Lonhro for $70,000 from the Grenville Stud draft at the 2021 Adelaide Yearling Sale and Grenville are preparing his Merchant Navy half sister for the 2024 Adelaide Yearling Sale.

Highness storms home in Wyong Millions thriller Supplied by MAGIC MILLIONS The Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic has proved to be a thriller with Highness coming from behind to blitz the field. No sooner was the warm favourite Spywire being hailed the winner after pulling clear of second pick Toque, Tommy Berry and Highness started a relentless surge from third place on the corner. So strong was the finish from Highness that he not only reeled in the leader but he pulled almost three quarters of a length clear on the line. Berry, who knows what it takes to win feature juvenile races, was impressed with the performance of Highness. "He's a real laid back character," Berry said. "From the top of the straight (I was confident). "I pulled the whip through to my right and gave him a smack and he just lowered his head and took off. "I always felt like I was going to get him, it was just a matter of when. "The Gold Coast straight will suit him better. The Magic Millions is going to be awesome." Berry predicted more improvement from the colt, who at his only other start ran a close up sixth in the Breeders' Plate. "He's still a baby. He is still a bit underdone and there's a fair bit of improvement there," Berry said. "That will switch him on a bit. I was a bit worried going to the gates about how relaxed he actually was. "He's going to have to be a bit more switched on at the Magic Millions in Queensland.” Highness, who is prepared by

Highness will be out to emulate champion colt Capitalist after his pulsating come from behind win in the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m).

Capitalist went on to the win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic weeks later and then famously won the Golden Slipper in 2016. Harron purchased Highness for $900,000 for his Colts Partnership at this year's Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Segenhoe Stud draft. A son of former Wyong 2YO Classic winner Snitzel, he is from an unraced Northern Meteor, half sister to former Australia Horse of the Year and Magic Millions graduate

Dissident. Meanwhile, proven Group One winner Royal Merchant bounced back to the winning stall in style with victory in the $150,000 Magic Millions Wyong 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m). Sent out a short price favourite with bookmakers, Royal Merchant sat just off the leader for much of the race before striking the front at the top of the straight. She was strong to the line under Jason Collett, holding out a fast finishing Ciaron Maher and David Eustacetrained stablemate, Semana to win by a long neck. Royal Merchant, a winner of this year's Group One

Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville in May, was a $160,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2021 for the stable from the Edinburgh Park draft. She has already earned more than $725,000. The win of Royal Merchant was celebrated by the team from Amarina Farm who will present a half sister by Graff as Lot 168 at January's 2024 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The build up to the $14.25 million The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday will continue over the coming weeks across the country, in particular in Brisbane with their Road to Magic Millions month of action in January.

The event class intends to create an incentive and competition pathway for thoroughbred equestrian enthusiasts. At 90cm, the new competition class aims to be accessible and safe. Magic Millions and the Queensland Off-TheTrack (QOTT) Program are focused on creating exciting competitive opportunities for those who invest in the retraining of thoroughbred racehorses at the grassroots for equestrian disciplines. “Those within the horse industry are the ultimate horse-lovers,” Magic Millions coowner Katie Page-Harvey said. “We work with thoroughbreds whether it is in breeding, training, ownership or at the racecourse, but few people know that for so many of us we enjoy a life outside of work with retrained racehorses – showjumping, polo, dressage, and eventing. “Horses are our 24/7 passion, and this new showjumping class is a chance for those passions to come together and be appreciated in a fantastic competitive environment. “Opening it up to those 16 and over who have a connection to the thoroughbred industry is a huge participation group. “We have deliberately chosen the height at 90cm in the first year, it is an accessible height, with the event developed to be fun, safe and exciting for those who love showjumping. “So many people you know have a connection to this vital industry. Our showjumping class is open to you all if you have an OTT to compete on.” In total, there will be 15 finalists who will compete for a $50,000 prize pool at the inaugural Queensland Off-The-Track Cup on the Gold Coast at the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo & Showjumping on Sunday, January 7. With the support of QOTT and working with Darling Downs Jump Club in Toowoomba in November and Jumping NSW’s Sydney Summer Classic in December, Magic Millions is seeking to bring the entire industry together who share a love for the retired racehorse as a showjumper. Qualifiers were conducted in Toowoomba, by Darling Downs Jump Club in November and the Magic Millions Sydney Summer Classic qualifying round at Sydney International Equestrian Centre in December . Those qualified will compete in the final at the Pacific Fair Magic Millions showjumping and Polo festival on January 7, 2024. Racing Minister Grace Grace said she was delighted to see Magic Millions and the QOTT Program partner to present such an Page 36

exciting event. “The introduction of the Queensland OffThe-Track Cup to the Magic Millions Carnival is the perfect way to showcase our retired racehorses,” Minister Grace said. “Thoroughbreds are incredibly versatile animals, who adjust quickly to new pursuits, and showjumping is just one of the many avenues they can pursue in their retirement from the racetrack. “The polo and showjumping have become beloved events on the Gold Coast each year, and in January, we look forward to our retired racehorses taking centre stage and enjoying their post-racing careers.” In addition to the 13 finalists from the Queensland and NSW qualifiers, a further two wildcards whose OTT meet the entry criteria will be issued: A Magic Millions Racing Women’s wildcard, for a female industry participant with the highest fund-raising total for Equine Pathways Australia by and A surprise celebrity wildcard. The QOTT Program was established in 2021 following the Martin Inquiry to provide a high-quality first transition for thoroughbred and standardbred horses from racing and breeding activities to retirement. Since its inception, QOTT has launched five major initiatives including the Subsidised Lessons Program, the Acknowledged Retrainers Program, the Event Sponsorship Program, the QOTT Grants Program and the QOTT Clubhouse. With the QOTT Program spending more than $1.3 million on its activities last financial year, more than $2.5 million is forecast to be spent in 2023-24. QOTT Board Chair Dr Christine Johnson said they were thrilled to partner with Magic Millions to present the Queensland Off-TheTrack Cup and to embrace the inclusion of a dedicated class for retired racehorses at the 2024 Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo & Showjumping. “QOTT’s investment in equestrian sport has seen a strong demand for retired racehorses across the state which is pleasing to see, and also complements the work being done by the Queensland Off-The-Track Program and

our network of acknowledged retrainers,” Dr Johnson said. “The inaugural series will showcase the versatility and athleticism of thoroughbreds in one of the many pursuits that retired racehorses embark on in their life after racing. “We’re looking forward to watching the final here in Queensland as a celebration of all things equine at the Magic Millions Carnival.” As an extension of this new showjumping class, Magic Millions is working with Equine Pathways Australia to demonstrate the combined priorities of the post-racing career of the thoroughbred and the welfare of both the horse and human. Based in Victoria with services nationally, Equine Pathways Australia provide counselling assistance, support and rehabilitation to bring equestrian dreams to life for riders with an injury or disability. Equine Pathways Australia integrates appropriately retrained racehorses into their programs where possible. The celebrity wildcard will donate their winnings to Equine Pathways Australia. “For our inaugural event, Magic Millions will fundraise on behalf of Equine Pathways Australia towards the acquisition of an elite dressage competition horse to potentially enable a para-dressage rider to represent Australia at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games and beyond,” Ms Page-Harvey said. “This is a first step in what we hope will be a program which will be a game changer for Australian para-equestrians as they campaign towards the 2032 Brisbane Paralympic Games.” Warren Moore, EPA Chairman, said his organisation was proud to partner with Magic Millions, QOTT and the Queensland Government. “The EPA program provides para-athletes, of all abilities, a welcoming and supportive community around the country, where everyone shares each other’s journey to their ‘gold medal moment,” he said. “That moment may be on the international stage, achieving a personal best, or even just riding again. The love of the horse is what we all have in common.” Julia Battams, founder and program executive manager of Equine Pathways Australia said the partnership will have long term benefits for the entire Australian para-equestrian community. “There will be riders learning about this today who now know a pathway exists for them to fulfil their dreams,” she said. “I can see Australians on a podium on the world stage leading to Brisbane in 2032. It would be magic for an OTT to be a para-athlete’s much-loved partner on that journey.” The prize money breakdown is: 1st $10,000 2nd $8,000 3rd $6,000 4th $5,000 5th $4,000 6th $3,500 7th $2,500 8th $2,000 9th $2,250 10th $1,750 11th $1,500 12th $1,250 13th $1,000 14th $750 15th $500 For more information on Magic Millions, please visit www.magicmillions.com.au

Cub is excited to return to their roots with the release of the “Classic” Horse Float. This reimagined classic is a two Horse Straight Load Float perfect for the demands of regional riders and horse people. The Classic is purpose built for comfortable travelling (Tare: 930kg*, ATM: 2000kg*, Ball weight: 100kg*) with rugged roller rocker leaf spring suspension providing efficient support between the electric braked wheels and chassis. It is the perfect two Horse Straight Load Float for equine transport.

Cub Campers are proud to introduce the ‘Classic Horse Float’ The design of the Classic Horse Float is inspired by the proud history of Cub while also combining the most up to date modern machinery, 3D design and manufacturing process currently used in the Cub factory. Australian Bluescope steel is used to expertly form the chas-

sis ensuring the highest of quality build. This is further reinforced with the body being constructed from Bluescope Zinc Anneal Steel. Inside, the Classic is fitted with a fully padded centre divider and chest bars to keep your horses comfortable, while

the aerodynamic fiberglass roof helps to cut through the air and keep the centre of gravity lower. Finally, sliding windows are included as well as Australian hardwood flooring with a 10year warranty which Cub are proud to have never received a claim on and a removable rubber floor mat. Cub are proud of their build quality and their more than 55 years of Australian-made manufacturing experience. In recognition, for a limited time, the Cub Classic will be available as a special 55 Year Anniversary edition, including a special engraved anniversary plaque. Cub’s modern day “Classic” horse float is a return to familiar territory, taking their original concept and improving it with contemporary design and manufacturing. The result is an instant classic. Grand National 2024 Qualified - Lead Rein, First Ridden & Childs small show Pony Nationals 2023 Qualified - Lead Rein & Small Show Pony Poppet is a divine little mare who turns heads wherever she goes. She loves being the centre of attention, will run to the gate whenever she sees you coming. Poppet is happy for the kids to climb all over her and can be lead in from the paddock, unrugged and saddled up by a child. She has been ridden by children of all ages on and off the lead, been to the beach and on trail rides. There is no dirt in her, but she is forward moving and is green. While she is very easy at home, she has only been to a handful of shows this season due to time restraints and does need a home with a competent child rider to continue her education and to help her gain confidence when off the property. This is a hard sale as I have owned her since a weanling, however I am several years off needing a pony like her for my young daughter. Contact: Alyce Ph: 0439 949 734

Karma Park Kingsman

Price: $ POA 15.1 hh Reg: Registered Arabian Riding Pony and EV Black/Brown Gelding Sire: Wesswoods Raven Caste Dam: Karma Park English Rose Eggsy is a well bred gelding with the looks and movement to be a fantastic child’s hack in the future at royal level and beyond with the right rider. He is easily handled by young teenagers and at his first show was prepped and ridden by a 14yo. Eggsy has spent a limited amount of time in professional training and, while he is quiet, he is still green. He has three comfortable paces and a lovely sitting trot which will make him an excellent rider mount. When in a no-pressure environment Eggsy will happily carry riders of any confidence level but for him to excel in an arena or the show ring he will need a competent set of hands to further his education. He is a real dude and enjoys nothing more than being up at the farm, riding trails, going bareback and rounding up the cattle. He is not matey with other horses and fits into a small herd well or happy to be paddocked by himself. Not fazed by much and super chill Eggsy has a laid-back personality and ready for someone to take him to the next level.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
