The Horse Report

Keeping your horse healthy during transport By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Education of the horse and preparation of the horse's gut, immune system and the transport vehicle are the keys to successful short and long-term transportation. Even short periods of transportation can be stressful to horses and cause detrimental changes to the microbial population in the horse's gut which can cause loss of appetite, undesirable behaviour, diarrhea, colic and gastric ulcers. On longer trips, a combination of stress and respiratory challenges may lead to travel sickness (Pleuropneumonia). Tips to prepare for transport In the week leading up to the journey:  Ensure your horses are calm and confident when loading and travelling in a horse float or truck.  Check that the float or truck has adequate ventilation and does not accumulate exhaust fumes.  For long journeys, plan your 4 hourly rest stops at safe locations.  If your horse is fussy about drinking 'strange' water, teach him or her to accept water flavoured with weak molasses, apple juice or cordial.  Introduce a source of live yeast probiotics every day from 3-5 days prior to travel, even for short journeys.  Consider beginning preventative ulcer medications (from your vet) &/or a proven nutraceutical to aid in the prevention of gastric ulcers.  Pack spare feeds and hay to allow time to transition onto newly purchased feeds if the horse will be away for an extended period.  Ensure the regular diet contains adequate levels of plain salt (at least 7g/day salt per 100 kg horse bodyweight) to optimize hydration and electrolyte balance prior to travel.  Ensure the regular diet contains adequate levels of antioxidants including vitamin E and selenium. A concentrated antioxidant supplement can be used to top up levels during transport and following heavy work

Preparation is the key to ensuring the safe transport of horses. and competition. The day of transport Arriving safely and on-time at your destination relies on your ability to minimize both anxiety and physiological stress to support the horse's gut, airways and immune system and minimize the risk of injury and misbehaviour. Follow these guidelines to help your horse arrive at the destination in a healthier state and ready to perform to his or her potential.  Feed lucerne hay 20 minutes prior to loading. Preferably feed it steamed or soaked at ground level to stimulate extra chewing to create saliva to buffer stomach acid. Aim to feed around 500g of hay per 150kg bodyweight.  Allow the horse to lower the head to clear airways during extended journeys.  If feeding hay in the float or truck, steam or soak it and give below head height to reduce airway contamination.  On the day of and the day after transport,

add a concentrated source of B-group vitamins, especially if your horse loses appetite.  Take regular breaks (preferably at least 20 minutes every 4 hours).  Provide fresh water at every rest stop (you may need a 'flavour' or bring water from home until your horse adapts to the taste of 'new' water).  Provide food at ground level and encourage grazing to allow mucous to clear the airways at every rest stop.  Ensure horses have access to long stem roughage at least every 2-4 hours for gut health and to reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.  Provide salt and/or a commercial electrolyte to replace electrolytes lost through sweat.  Give additional antioxidants with a concentrated supplement containing vitamins C, E and organic selenium to boost the immune system and prevent tissue damage caused by oxidative stress.  Continued page 11

Reducing risks of transporting horses  From page 10 Top tips for recovery after horse transport There is always a real risk of a horse developing travel sickness (Pleuropneumonia), especially following a lengthy journey. Travel sickness is caused by a bacterial infection of the lungs and chest cavity that occurs when the normal bacteria of the upper respiratory tract enter the lower airways, causing infection. Many horses sweat excessively during transport due to heat inside the float or truck and/or anxiety. It is important to replace lost electrolytes quickly to facilitate faster recovery. Gut disturbance and loss of appetite are also common following transport due to elevated stress levels and a subsequent change in the gut microbiome. This needs to be managed quickly to prevent weight loss, colic and gastric ulcers. You can reduce the risk of transport negatively impacting on your horse's health and behaviour by:  Replacing electrolytes lost during the journey with a commercial electrolyte designed to replace the minerals lost via sweat.  Continuing with antioxidant and probiotic supplementation for 3 - 14 days after transport. This aids muscle recovery and boosts gut health and immunity following transport.

Simple measures taken prior to transporting your horse can reduce health risks.

 If your horse has reduced appetite following the journey, add B-group vitamins and probiotics.  Including a biscuit or two of lucerne hay in the diet each day to reduce risk of gastric ulcers. For ulcer-prone horses, consider using veterinary prescribed medications and/or proven nutraceuticals for additional peace of mind.  Allowing your horse at least 2-3 days to recover from a long journey before com-

mencing strenuous exercise or other stressful activity.  Monitoring and record your horse's temperature twice daily for a week following prolonged transport.  Watching your horse's appetite and demeanour for 3-5 days after transport.  Always seek veterinary assistance if your horse has an elevated temperature, appears lethargic, loses appetite, has diarrhea, nasal discharge, persistent cough, founder or colic.

Monitering your horses digital pulse The digital pulse provides key information with regards to the health of a horse’s hooves. When taking pulses, you are feeling the blood flowing through the artery into the hooves. In a healthy horse, the digital pulse is quite hard to find because the normal flow of blood is unrestricted. However, when there is inflammation in the hoof, the blood flow is restricted and as a result backs up in the artery, making the pulse feel much stronger. The artery pushes the blood into the hoof. When there is inflammation, there is no longer enough 'room' within the hoof capsule. Essentially, the hoof pushes the blood back into the artery. This is what causes the bounding or bounce of the pulse. The more inflammation there is in the hoof, the stronger the bounce. There is some natural variation in pulse strength. All horses are different, so checking pulses frequently will help you learn to define when your horse is `normal’. An easily felt equine digital pulse is commonly called a bounding digital pulse. The sensation is like a throbbing headache or an injured finger. A bounding equine digital pulse is a red flag. It is telling you that your horse may have a health issue. Slightly stronger is not as alarming as very strong. If the pulse seems stronger than normal, make sure to check a few times before assuming something is wrong. Stronger pulses indicate inflammation or

Use your pointer and middle finger to find the digital pulse

pain. Compare pulses in all four feet. This way, abnormalities in one hoof will be more apparent. If there is a bounding pulse in only one hoof, then suspect a localized issue, possibly an abscess or maybe a bruise. If, on the other hand, you are noticing foot discomfort, personality changes or anything that leads you to believe he is not doing well, then suspect laminitis. If the conditions causing inflammation are addressed quickly, the horse should improve rapidly with very few complications. This is why taking pulses is such a useful management tool. Trust yourself and your horse. If the horse looks miserable or you are overly alarmed, call your veterinarian. Use common sense.

Learning to take digital pulse Normal equine digital pulses can be very hard to detect. If you are touching the correct area of the leg and having a hard time finding the pulse, then more than likely, the pulse is normal. There are two noticeable grooves in the lower leg. 1.) Between the flexor tendons and suspensory ligament. 2.) Between the cannon bone and suspensory ligament. The vein/artery/nerve run in the groove formed between the flexor tendons and the suspensory. The veins, Arteries and Nerves (VAN) are bundled together. When you take the digital pulse, it is blood flowing through the artery that you feel. Using your fingertips is the most sensitive way to check pulses. Lay your fingers over the whole area. Th easiesat spot to find the digital pulse, is between the coronary band and the fetlock. -Using your pointer and middle finger, start at the front of the pastern half way between the fetlock and the coronary band. -Move your fingers towards the back of the pastern applying some pressure until you find a little groove. You can roll your fingers over this area until you feel a slight pulse. If you press too hard, you will pinch it off, and not hard enough and you won’t find it. -Each leg will have two little groovy areas to find a pulse. Be sure to check both sides on each hoof.

Animal Neuro-Myofascial release Technique Provided by ANGEL’S ANIMALS www.holisticanimalstudies.org

Animal Neuro-myofascial Release Technique, also known as ANMR, is a body alignment technique for both small and large animals. It utilizes a specialized tool that enables the practitioner to put motion into the soft tissues surrounding and adjacent to the vertebral column and other joints. This creates a combination of neurological input and soft tissue releases that allows the animal's body to "reset" itself leading to an improvement in posture, range of motion and gait. Is this a Chiropractic Technique? No, even though a tool is used that is similar to the Activator tool (a tool used in human chiropractic to perform Activator technique), this is not considered to be a chiropractic technique. Rather than using the tool to move bones, the tool is used to release soft tissues and provide neurological input through quick impulses. This technique is approved through the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and is considered to be a soft tissue technique. Who can Perform this Technique? This course and certification is available to anyone who is already certified in animal massage therapy or is a licensed Veterinarian, Veterinary Technician or Doctor of Chiropractic. Animal massage therapists find this technique to be a great addition to their practice, allowing them to address body mis-alignments quicker and more accurately than can be done with massage therapy alone. Veterinarians have began adding this technique to their practice to create additional revenue and offer clients with a non-medication, non-surgical treatment option for animals suffering from musculoskeletal issues.

Body alignment techniques can benefit your horse is many ways Many Doctors of Chiropractic have enjoyed adding ANMR to their practice to provide animals with effective and safe body alignment. State animal massage laws must be followed when practicing ANMR.

For more information or to enrole in a course visit the website www.holisticanimalstudies.org/blog/category/online-animal-bodywork-courses

What Conditions can Benefit from ANMR? Horses: Back pain Difficulty picking up correct lead Head tossing Bucking/rearing Difficulty pushing off hind end Difficulty bending Sticky stifles Small Animals: IVDD Hip Dysplasia Luxating Patellas Leg weakness Difficulty jumping/getting up Sore back and/or neck Arthritis

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Connecting with animals Wendy J Animal Connections

Suuplied by WWW.WENDYJANIMALCONNECTIONS.COM.AU

How do intuitive sessions work? Intuition works by the transfer of energy between two energetic beings. I can’t explain it, I just know it works. Quantum physicists can explain it and there are some very good books on the subject. Contact me to find out which books are my favourites on the topic. Do I need to visit your animal in person? No, I don’t need to visit. All I need is a photograph of their face and basic details. I have worked with animals all over the world from my home office in Queensland. How do you do your sessions? I conduct my sessions remotely via a photograph and basic information about your animal (name, age and sex). After intuitively connecting with them, I can hold a conversation, much like I could have with you over the telephone or in person. I get words, see images like photographs and sometimes little movies of things that have happened. Sometimes I hear sounds, or get smells and tastes. Sometimes, I just “know”, like I did with our own horses. As the session progresses, I take notes and afterwards, I type up a full transcript of what your animal has told or shown me. After you have had time to read and think about the results, I am happy to reconnect briefly if you need clarification or more information. What do I need to do after I book a session? After you book your session, you need to send me a photograph of your animal’s face and basic details of name, age and sex, plus your questions for them. You can do this via my email nw.jones@bigpond.com, Facebook Messenger on my Wendy J Animal Connection page, or if you are in Australia by text to 0427 965 393. When will my session be done and when will I receive the transcript? I aim to conduct all sessions (except Emergency sessions) within a week of them being booked. If I know I won’t be able to do that, I will let you know. Emergency sessions I aim to do within a few hours of them being booked, if not straight away. If I can’t do that, I will give you the opportunity to find another animal communicator.

Radiographic proof in clinical results By Dr ANDREW WATTS BVSc Equine Veterinarian

VETERINARY RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT

BONE Gold nutritional bone joint and collagen supplement was formulated to provide some of the essential amino acid requirements of collagen type I, II and III (found in bone and connective tissue) in addition to supporting the nitric oxide pathway which has been found to assist in the formation of bone callus postinjury. Veterinary surgeons have recommended that Bone Gold may assist with sore shins, tendon injuries, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis and post-surgery in horses and polyarthritis, geriatric osteoarthritis, and post-surgery in dogs. Here is a veterinary radiographic report on a horse with a fracture evident on the medial toe and after treatment and feeding Bone Gold during this period. More information on these products can be found at www.vetgold.com.au

HORSE: "XXXXXXXX" DATES OF EXAMINATION: 26TH AUG, 21ST OCT 21 & 17TH NOV '21 PLACE: XXXXXXXXXX FARM XXXXXXX's left and right front feet were radiographed on 26th Aug, 21st Oct (8 weeks) and again on the 17th Nov '21(12 weeks). RADIOGRAPHS: 26.08.21: Right Front: Large P3 solar margin fracture evident on medial toe 32.6mm x 4.1mm with approximately 1.4mm separation from parent bone as below left image. 21.10.21: Right Front: Fine residual 4.2mm fracture still evident, approximately 90% resolution 17.11.21: Right Front: Fracture fully resolved

Solar margin Type IV fractures of this magnitude have well-documented internationally published healing rates of 7 - 12 months. Full resolution of these fractures is rare as most often the fracture fragments are resorbed. Full resolution in a 3 month period was not anticipated. The horse was on Bone Gold 3 x scoops fed once per day for this period.

The Horse Report

Meal size should be little and often By Dr NERIDA MCGILCHRIST www.feedxl.com We have all been told ‘little and often’ when it comes to feeding horses - but why? Well, when you consider horses are ‘grazers’ and their gut has been designed to work best with small amounts being consumed constantly over long periods of the day and night (they eat for up to 17 hours a day, it makes sense that they should be fed small meals frequently. But let me give you a visual (in words) on why it is best to feed little and often In the horse’s small intestine there are things called enzymes, which are like tiny pairs of scissors. An enzyme’s job is to cut big things like protein, starch and fats up into very small things like amino acids (the building blocks of protein), glucose the building block of starch) and fatty acids (a building block of fats). Unless the enzymes chop protein, starch and fat up they will not get absorbed as they are far too big to cross the intestinal

Horse will benefit more if you feed them a little but often.

wall intact. So for absorption to occur, these little enzymes must chop the big stuff into little stuff. Now, imagine I was to give you a pair of scissors and then held up a long piece of ribbon. If I walked past you very, very slowly holding this ribbon and said ‘chop the ribbon into small pieces’, you would have plenty of time to chop the ribbon multiple times into small pieces. This is what happens in the gut.

If a piece of protein for example goes moving through the small intestine very very slowly, the little enzymes have plenty of time to chop it up into amino acids so it can be absorbed. Now imagine if I held up another piece of ribbon, exactly the same as the first, but this time I run past you and tell you to chop it up… you might get one shot at it before it is gone. And this is exactly what happens in the gut.

If feed is moving too quickly through the gut the poor little enzymes simply don’t get enough time to chop anything up -meaning it simply won’t be absorbed. So back to meal size and the little and often concept - when you feed small meals, the feed will move nice and slowly through the gut and the enzymes will be able to do their job and fully digest it so your horse gains full benefit. Feed large meals and all of a sudden you increase the speed with which it will travel through the gut and reduce the amount of time the enzymes have to do their cutting … meaning your horse misses out on a lot of the value from that feed. It will be digested to some extent in the hindgut but a lot of value is lost. So while not the only reason you should feed little and often, it is a really important one to keep in mind. If you have a horse struggling to gain weight eating huge feeds, you might find you get better results by feeding less. Something to consider

No matter what demands your horse faces

Electrolytes, heat stress and Summer By ANTOINETTE FOSTER BSc Nutrition, Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist ©Hi Form Australia PL 2022 Heat stress in horses Now that we are returning to summer there are many changes, we need to make to ensure our horses continue to function and feel at their best. Although they can regulate their own temperature from a wide range of degrees it is important to note extreme heat can still have a detrimental effect. It may be difficult to distinguish between actual heat stress and general sweat and rest. Know the signs coming into summer. Signs include: •Body temp of 40 degrees Celsius •Hot to touch skin •Excessive sweating and white foam •Flared nostrils and shallow breathing •Staggering or ‘drunken’ gait •Distressed •Fatigue and collapse in some cases Horses who are underfed and emaciated will be at higher risk for heat stress due to a lack of glucose and fuel to keep their body strong and working efficiently. The same goes for obese horses, pregnant and older horses. Heavier horses such as draft breeds or ponies originating from cold climates may also feel the heat more. To prevent heat stress there are a few things we recommend. Ensuring your horse has 24/7 access to water, to prevent dehydration. A dam can be beneficial in higher temperatures, so horses can have access to submerging themselves. Providing large ice blocks in their water troughs can keep water temperature cool. A lot of people worry their horse is not drinking enough water, this is usually never the case unless the horse is sick or suffering from a condition, in which case a vet should be called. Simply adding salt to their diet will increase water consumption, but for all the wrong reasons. Adding salt to feed is a common misconcep-

tion, salt is sodium in one form or another. This can have a negative impact as it can dehydrate the cells rather than replenishing lost nutrients through sweat. If you think about it, when we have a salty meal we naturally need to drink more water, this is because the salt dehydrates our cells, the same works for horses. Electrolytes on the other hand are wonderful in heat and to replenish minerals lost from sweat. Most electrolyte formulas contain a combination of calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, potassium and magnesium. The key to a good electrolyte supplement is in the ratio of these minerals, it is essential that they are supplied to the correct ratios to ensure optimal absorption and replenishment in the horse. It is essential to keep to the recommended dose of electrolytes as an excessive amount can have negative effects on the horse. Our ElectroPlus formula contains all the minerals at correct dosages for absorption with the addition of selenium and Vitamin C to add to the acid buffering/alkalising effect of the supplement. ElectroPlus acts as a preventative from electrolyte imbalances because it ois a buffered acid/alkaline neutraliser, electrolyte and diuretic. Other essentials to note would be ensuring the horse has access to shade. Providing a cooler area with cover and good airflow will take a lot of stress of your horses. Everything from tree cover to shade sails or well-aerated loose boxes in paddocks all offer great solutions.

Horses who are stabled may be more at risk of heat stress because of the confined space and potentially warmer environment compared to outside temperature. If there is no other option but to have your horse stabled, we strongly recommend some kind of air-conditioning or fan system to allow the horse to cool down properly. Taking the horse out of the stable to be hosed down with cool water will also help in this situation. Ensuring the horse is kept cool throughout the day. Australian summers bring excruciating temperatures and humidity for some up north. Higher temperatures and summer can also mean dry soil and dust for some places throughout Australia. Dust can have a negative impact on the horses’ respiratory system. The main electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride and phosphorus. Minor electrolytes are iron, copper, zinc, cobalt, selenium, sulphur and iodine which are required in trace amounts. One litre of sweat contains approximately 10 gm of salt (8 gms of sodium Chloride and 2 grams of potassium chloride). ElectroPlus acts as a preventative from electrolyte imbalances because it is a buffered acid/alkaline neutraliser, electrolyte and mild diuretic formula. ElectroPlus contains 10 tissue salts they are listed below: each tissue salt has a key role to play, some of these are indicated: calcium phosphate (cell builder), calcium sulphate (suppuration remover), calcium fluoride (tissue strengthener), potassium phosphate (nerve power activator), potassium sulphate (cell oxygenator), potassium chloride (congestion remover), sodium sulphate (problem fluid remover), iron phosphate (inflammation remover), magnesium phosphate (neuromuscular coordinator), sodium phosphate (metabolic acid remover) with the inclusion of zinc sulphate (insulin utilisation, sexual maturation, sperm function, RNA production, retina function, white blood cell function, alkaline phosphatase utilisation and liver function).  Continued page 27

Managing stress levels in performance horses  From page 26 Hi-Form E also contains sodium chloride (a major component of the cations of the extra cellular fluid and will regulate the acidbase equilibrium. About 95% of the sodium which leaves the body is excreted in the urine). ElectroPlus also contains the herb Uva Ursi which is used because of its urinary antiseptic action, diuretic action and astringent. Because the leaves are the only part of the plant used this herb can cause discolouration of the urine. Vitamin C is also used in the ElectroPlus for its enormous benefits. Although horses synthesise vitamin C they do not synthesise enough and therefore when undergoing enormous stress require high levels. (speeds wound healing, gives tensile strength to connective tissue, helps activate many enzymes, speeds formation of new proteins, detoxifies substances from destroyed cells, helps prevent haemorrhage, increases urine production, a lack of vitamin C can lead to damage to muscle, capillaries, leucocytes, capillaries, erythrocytes, platelets, calcium content in the blood, liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenals, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract and endocrine system). Dr. Schussler’s analysis of the inorganic mineral ash that remains after the human or animal body is burnt revealed that it is primarily made up of 12 mineral salts: and that therefore these minerals must play a vital role in both the physical integrity and proper functioning of the organism as a whole. Further investigation predictably revealed that the different organs and parts of the body were made up of different minerals, and/or different apportionments of those minerals. He therefore concluded that those different minerals and/or different apportionments were vital for both the integrity and functioning of those individual organs and parts. In 1938, Dr. Maurice Blackmore (1906-1978), an Australian Naturopathic Physician, devised a method that retained the symptomatology of Schussler, but employed small pharmacological doses of mineral substance (ranging from 4mg in the case of calcium fluoride, to 260mg in the case of sodium

A well-balanced diet, a good daily supplement and an electrolyte such as ElectroPlus is an excellent way to manage high performance horses or horses that tend to sweat profusely. phosphate). In 1988, Hi-Form Equine began developing formulas for use in equines using these tissue salts as part of their formulation. Each tissue salt used in HiForm’s formulations are used for a specific purpose. Most commercial electrolyte formulas contain industrial or technical grade minerals/ salts which are very poorly absorbed by the equine. These formulas supply very high levels of these various salts at the expense of the animal. An outline of the possibilities that can arise as a result of prescribing minerals in large therapeutic doses, or in the wrong form is as follows; •A deficiency may be temporarily corrected or balanced but not maintained in the longer term. •A mineral deficiency may be corrected at the expense of a new mineral deficiency. Performance horses •Cause of fatigue is a reduction in energy stores of glucose which forces the horse to slow down and use free fatty acids. •Body strengthening is a vital part of the training program, but the basic problem with body strengthening is the recovery time necessary to achieve biological response and improvement. •Short training periods with a gradual increase in workload is an excellent guideline. •Bone responses are increased by training stress such as remod-

elling and thickening and increased strength. •There are many factors that effect training: external, such as high winds, lightening, heat and internal, such as injury/infection, the horse’s reaction to fight or to flee. •Extreme stress can cause a series of uncontrolled reactions such as increased heart rate, blood pressure, sweating and perspiration, smooth muscle contracting of the digestive system and increased hormone levels. •The immune system can be affected by a short period of intense exercise. •It is important to control the stress levels placed on the horse. •Physical exercise is external stress and it is essential to increase stress in small amounts so the horse can cope with and adjust to stress levels. •There is a catch 22 scenario

though and that is your horse’s body must undergo stress to develop and increase his/her ability to perform. As your horse becomes fitter the range in which you can work safely becomes smaller, this means enough stress to get a training effect and too much which will damage the horse. As a horse reaches maximum fitness levels it becomes extremely difficult to further improve the horse without damaging him/her. Progressive heart rate testing is a safe reliable method of measuring your horses’ fitness level. The ElectroPlus is also now available in vetpacks. Mutual respect in our horsemanship By TANJA KRAUS Mutual respect is a concept or topic that is often overlooked when it comes to our horses - in fact most often people come to horsemanship clinics or lessons saying that “he needs to respect me” or “he doesn't respect me” and wanting that to change wanting to instill more respect in the horse for them. We don't often hear of people saying that “I need to respect him more”, however this is probably the most vital element of our horsemanship. Let me try to explain. Horsemanship as we teach and study it, is the practice of communicating with our horses in a way that they will understand the most - its roots are based in the study of horses within a herd, how they interact with each other, how their bodies work and the skills, tasks, theories and actions that we perform are based as close to nature as possible. We have all seen horsemanship in its glory - the horse that would not float who now self loads at liberty, the horse that would not be caught, now running to his owner to have the halter put on, the nervous flighty horse, now confident, calm and collected. But what about the not so amazing, basic day to day interactions with our horses - this is the stuff that dreams are made of. Knowing I have a confident, calm and willing partner - no matter what situation we find ourselves in. We all want it - but few of us are willing to do what it takes to get it. Mutual respect begins with us understanding that if we want a partner, a team mate, a confident, willing mate - we must

Mutual respect involves understanding your horse and want you from it but also appreciating that the horse also need to understand you

respect who he is. We must realize that he is a horse - subject to flight and fight, and guided by his instincts. For us to want to have a wild animal as a calm and willing partner, we must respect him enough to interact with him at his level. Mutual respect means knowing that allowing him to rub on me is not beneficial to him - its confusing, for he would not be allowed to rub on the leader of the herd, and in fact she would rub on him. Mutual respect means we may have to send him away, even though we really just want to pat him. Mutual respect is not humanizing him - he is a horse, with instincts and a masters degree in

body language - he knows more about how you are than you do yourself. So next time you are thinking

that he doesn't have enough respect for you - you may need to ask the question do you have enough respect for him ?

Trainer T shirt improves rider alignment By KATE DOLAN The greatest gift for a rider is a good position and set of aids, using body awareness, centering and imagery. These classical principles of riding make it more enjoyable for the horse and rider partnership. It's so easy to forget that the only way we can truly improve the horse is through the correct riding position and aids. For example, in order to achieve straightness in the horse, you first have to straighten yourself, starting by becoming aware of your own ‘crookedness’ before you can even tell in what way the horse is crooked. The Trainer T was developed for my students to smooth this pathway and feel the right response in the horse. This simple visual tool helps riders to understand and correct upper body alignment and has been most effective for all riders from beginners to advanced riders. I understand the upper body position is only part of the package, but it is an essential ingredient for success. The results and feedback are exciting and worth sharing. Feedback from riders using th Trainer T includes: * I love this T because mum and dad can easily see and help me correct my position * I started riding taller as soon as I put it on!

The Trainer T is the perfect tool to improve posture, balance and seat. * I'm consistently getting the correct canter lead. * It's so much easier to control my horses shoulders now my position has improved. * I am able to keep the correct bend on both reins. * I've already improved from a 6 - 8 in my collective mark for position. Many of my students have won major events throughout Australia and the Trainer T has been instrumental in enabling their successful partnership.

Kate Dolan is a passionate coach and rider always looking to achieve quality riding and training results for the success and benefit of both horse and rider. Based on the Gold Coast, Qld, Kate offers a boutique training and coaching facility where she designed the 'Trainer T' for her students.

SIEC welcomes Olympic Gold Medallists By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Twenty-three years on from the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC) still hosts significant equestrian events including the Sydney International 3 Day Event (Sydney 3DE). This year, this important Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier also hosted two gold medallists from the 2000 Games who were present to ensure that the sport is in great shape for the future. Year 2000 Individual Gold and Team Bronze medallist David O’Connor (USA) and member of Australia’s gold medal team, Stuart Tinney were back at SIEC to be part of the 3DE, but not as competitors. David was in Sydney as the FEI Course Director - Course Designer Specialist at a fourday FEI training seminar for Eventing officials, of which Stuart was a participant to refresh his accreditation as an official FEI course designer. The pair of golden boys continue to live by their passion for Eventing through broad based participation and put back to the sport by giving time, officiating and sharing their vast knowledge with riders and administrators. A major part of this ongoing commitment is to ensure that officials have sound, up-to-date knowledge of the sport and its rules to ensure that fairness and safety are managed in accordance with best-practice standards. As former Olympic representatives these Eventing stars competed at top level, but on this occasion, they represent the FEI and EA in the quest to give back to their sport. David was full of praise for the collective interests that have kept SIEC in such good order. “It's staggering for me and exciting to see that the park is used so well and continues 23 years on. It is a true legacy for equestrian sport in Australia,” he said. “The rings are great and they're keeping the property up to the level required from an Olympic point of view, there are legacies that can happen because a country hosts the Games and it's exciting to see that the park (SIEC) is used so well. “I competed in Atlanta and that site is still there, but not used for cross country, it is now mostly used for show jumping. “Then there are venues in other countries that

She was a judge and so we learned that you had to give back. I'm a huge believer that as athletes we need to give back to the sport,” he said. “Because Eventing is not huge when you look at other sports, you have to take care of it. This is especially so in Australia, you have to take care of it, and pass it on to the next generations in good shape. “I think the scope of our responsibility for the sport is to see that everybody has their role and all roles are really important, no one is more important than another. “The organisers, the officials, the riders, they're all equally important and can't be separated from each other. “Everybody's got a bit of a different view and the experienced ones help the younger ones by

asking, ‘did you know about this?’ We all learn, that's why I love doing these things. If you can facilitate that conversation, the whole thing just explodes.” Sydney Eventing fans were pleased to welcome David as he visited the venue of one of his wins a little over two decades ago. David was much valued for his input at the Eventing Officials Course and his lessons will live on through increased knowledge and more effective management as the FEI and EA move forward and meet the demands of modern equestrian sport. Stuart was delighted to learn from David while refreshing his course designer accreditation. “It just so happens that the director of this training course is David O'Connor, who I met 23 years ago here at the Olympic venue. It does seem strange to be seeing each other again in this situation,” Stuart said. EA reflected on the déjà vu aspects of this competition at SIEC and Stuart agreed, “Yes, it has actually been wonderful.  continued page 33

The Horse Report Olympic medalists share their eventing knowledge  From page 32 “When you're here competing against another country, you're all separate and in your own little bubble. You are trying to give the best performance you can, so it's quite insular at the top level. “Sometimes we don't get to hang out communally, especially at this venue as it is so large and spread out. It is just wonderful for David to come back and see that the venue is still here and used by many equestrians. “What a legacy we have and how lucky we are to have a venue like this that has continued in the sport and is still used all the time.” Stuart said he got a bit used to this legacy from the 2000 Olympics since he was there all the time and rode here quite a lot. “It has been wonderful to look back, and then forward to the course design for this year’s 3DE, it is first class and I am very glad to be part of it,” he said. EA congratulated Stuart for his contribution as an elite athlete and commended his decision to go down the official’s route like David - especially in terms of FEI accreditation. When asked what made him decide to take this pathway in the sport, Stuart said it started quite a few years ago just at the low levels. “While riding some courses, I felt that the distances were a bit awkward and strange to ride. I found myself getting involved and thinking that I would not mind helping out on the lower-level courses and this led to some course designing,” he said. “As a rider, I have jumped a lot of tracks and had ideas about course designing. I quite like doing it, so that's how it started and the more I did, the more I enjoyed it.

"I'm excited to both support our local producers and indulge The Star Gold Coast's Magic Millions' guests with dishes crafted from Queensland's incredible seasonal produce,” he said. "Distinctive dishes like Australian bay bug and macadamia gazpacho with native herbs and grapes, fried coral trout sliders with native herb tartare or to sweeten your day, our elegant peach Bellini are just some of the delicious options on offer this summer." Billy and wife Nicole, owners of Slater Thoroughbreds based in Victoria, were announced as ambassadors for Magic Millions Carnival through until 2025. Nicole, who specialises in largescale equestrian portraits, was announced as Magic Millions Commissioned Artist, a role which will see her unveil an equine-themed installation as

part of the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo & Showjumping. Meanwhile, Billy will again take to the field to play polo, the former trackwork rider still as handy as ever in the saddle. "Horses have always been a huge part of our lives since Nicole and I met as teenagers at a pony club in North Queensland,” Billy said. “Now being in the world of breeding thoroughbreds is such a rewarding experience. “Coupled with that, Nic's skill in capturing on canvas some of the giants of racing is taking her to incredible creative heights. “I think we've shifted from being a family where horses have been a casual part of our life, to them being a more significant part of our world. “To be around like-minded people for the period of the Magic Millions Carnival, it's just the biggest buzz for us. I am no State of Origin level polo player, but I love giving it a red hot go." Magic Millions co-owner Katie

Page said for Gerry and her, hosting The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival is theperfect start to every New Year. “It is a true celebration of the Australian and international Thoroughbred industry and their love of the horse,” Katie said. “Carnival 2024 will see Off-theTrack Thoroughbreds celebrate their new jumping careers, and the best Showjumpers in Australia will vie for $1.5m in prizemoney. National and international equestrian-royalty will contest the Polo. “The next crop of potential racing superstars will go through our yearling sales ring, all culminating in the most lucrative day of racing ever held in Queensland - The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday. Being able to showcase the horse industry and these magnificent animals all against the backdrop of Queensland's stunning Gold Coast.”  Continued page 35

Cub is excited to return to their roots with the release of the “Classic” Horse Float. This reimagined classic is a two Horse Straight Load Float perfect for the demands of regional riders and horse people. It is the perfect two Horse Straight Load Float for equine transport.

Cub Campers are proud to introduce the ‘Classic Horse Float’ The design of the Classic Horse Float is inspired by the proud history of Cub while also combining the most up to date modern machinery, 3D design and manufacturing process currently used in the Cub factory. Australian Bluescope steel is used to expertly form the chas-

sis ensuring the highest of quality build. This is further reinforced with the body being constructed from Bluescope Zinc Anneal Steel. Inside, the Classic is fitted with a fully padded centre divider and chest bars to keep your horses comfortable, while

the aerodynamic fiberglass roof helps to cut through the air and keep the centre of gravity lower. Finally, sliding windows are included as well as Australian hardwood flooring with a 10year warranty which Cub are proud to have never received a claim on and a removable rubber floor mat. Cub are proud of their build quality and their more than 55 years of Australian-made manufacturing experience. In recognition, for a limited time, the Cub Classic will be available as a special 55 Year Anniversary edition, including a special engraved anniversary plaque. Grand National 2024 Qualified - Lead Rein, First Ridden & Childs small show Pony Nationals 2023 Qualified - Lead Rein & Small Show Pony Poppet is a divine little mare who turns heads wherever she goes. She loves being the centre of attention, will run to the gate whenever she sees you coming. Poppet is happy for the kids to climb all over her and can be lead in from the paddock, unrugged and saddled up by a child. She has been ridden by children of all ages on and off the lead, been to the beach and on trail rides. There is no dirt in her, but she is forward moving and is green. While she is very easy at home, she has only been to a handful of shows this season due to time restraints and does need a home with a competent child rider to continue her education and to help her gain confidence when off the property. This is a hard sale as I have owned her since a weanling, however I am several years off needing a pony like her for my young daughter. Contact: Alyce Ph: 0439 949 734

Karma Park Kingsman

Price: $ POA 15.1 hh Reg: Registered Arabian Riding Pony and EV Black/Brown Gelding Sire: Wesswoods Raven Caste Dam: Karma Park English Rose Eggsy is a well bred gelding with the looks and movement to be a fantastic child’s hack in the future at royal level and beyond with the right rider. He is easily handled by young teenagers and at his first show was prepped and ridden by a 14yo. Eggsy has spent a limited amount of time in professional training and, while he is quiet, he is still green. He has three comfortable paces and a lovely sitting trot which will make him an excellent rider mount. When in a no-pressure environment Eggsy will happily carry riders of any confidence level but for him to excel in an arena or the show ring he will need a competent set of hands to further his education. He is a real dude and enjoys nothing more than being up at the farm, riding trails, going bareback and rounding up the cattle. He is not matey with other horses and fits into a small herd well or happy to be paddocked by himself. Not fazed by much and super chill Eggsy has a laid-back personality and ready for someone to take him to the next level.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
