Tweed Equestrian Saddles and Saddlefit The tidal flats of Mackay Harbour will be the venue for one of Australia’s more unique race meetings this month, the second annual Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival.

They’re off and racing on the beach at Mackay By BOB ANTHONY If you are looking for a race day with a difference, why not head to the beach and soak up the atmosphere of the Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival this month? Now in its second year, the four day event from August 15 -18 is a sprint format with the course on the tidal flats of Mackay’s harbour. The main race day will be on Sunday, August 18 and in typical tropical Queensland style, , there will be plenty of entertainment set against the backdrop of the Whitsunday coast. There will be 12 races on the days with the racing contested over three distances and over three categories: m Thoroughbreds over 600m; m Quarterhorses over 400m; and m Any others over 350m. It is an open meeting which means any type of horse and rider can enter and with some serious money, $30,000 in prizemoney, up for offer, it’s not surprising that there will be a few `bush surprises’ coming along

for the $5000 prize to winners of each category. While the main focus of the day will be on the horses, there will be plenty of activities `off track’ to keep everyone entertained with Latin, Mexican and Calypso bands playing, food courts and bars operating , kids events such as a shetland pony race, jumping castles and a twist of the fashions on the field fashions on the sand - so bring a black tie and boardshorts! About 10,000 people are expect. Other events planned in the lead up to the main race day include a charity golf challenge, stage show starring Rhonda Burchmore and a seafood and wine day. Race organiser Mick Pope was expecting the Mackay beach races to grow into one of the major `picnic’ race events on the Queensland calendar and said it was a great way to showcase what Mackay had to offer. Virus field testing faces technical delay The Queensland Horse Council has praised the performance of the Hendra virus vaccine for horses even though being advised that a technical hitch has delayed the 12 month duration of immunity testing. QHC President Mrs Debbie Dekker said the virus used to challenge the animals was not a lethal dose and this became obvious when the unvaccinated control animals did not become sick. “In order for the tests to be reliable, it is important that the vaccinated horses are exposed to a lethal dose of Hendra virus," she said. "This means that the study needs to be repeated and early 2014 is the earliest that appropriately vaccinated horses will be available for testing." However Mrs Dekker reassured horse owners there was some positive news regarding vaccinations. “The good news is that field studies have shown that horses receiving booster vaccinations at either six months or 12 months

Dog infected

Despite some delays in testing for the duration of Hendra virus immunity after vaccination, the Queensland Horse Council is confident research is on track to develop a long term and effective protection for horses and their owners against the virus.

after their primary course of injections show a strong response to boosters,” she said. “This tells us that vaccine 'memory' is well-established and it is this aspect of vaccination that will be the key to providing longer term field protection." Mrs Dekker said the QHC was happy with the rigorous research, development and test-

ing that CSIRO had performed in getting the vaccine to its current state. “It is exciting that such an effective and safe vaccine is available to us for us to protect our horses against Hendra virus,” she said. “It is truly the best way for horse owners to protect themselves, their families and their horses against this horrible virus.”

Hendra virus has been confirmed in a dog on an infected property near Macksville, on the NSW mid north coast. “This follows the death of a horse from the virus on the same property in early July,” NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Ian Roth said. “It is most likely that the dog caught the virus from the infected horse following close contact. "The dog was sampled by the Senior District Veterinarian from the local Livestock Health and Pest Authority as part of monitoring of the quarantined property." In accordance with national biosecurity policy, the positive dog has been euthanased. The DPI recommends that dogs and cats are kept away from sick or dead horses and the body fluids from sick or dead horses to reduce the risk of an infection.” Mr Roth said there is no evidence to suggest that dogs can be infected with Hendra virus directly from flying foxes. If you suspect your horse has Hendra virus call your vet immediately or the Emergency Disease Watch Hotline - 1800 675 888.

The Horse Report

Know when you mare is expected to foal One of the most stressful things about foaling is the nightly vigils to check your expectant mare, especially when you have to work the next day. Anyone who has been in contact with foaling mares would know the story of “my mare waxed up today, she should foal very soon”. The average gestation length in the mare ranges from 320 to 362 days. Most mares will foal within 330-345 days of successful breeding. However, mares have successfully foaled with gestation lengths outside this range. The mare will start to show signs days to weeks prior to foaling: •the udder will start to develop •vulva swells and lengthens •teats 'wax up' 1-4 days prior to foaling. There are several products on the market that can help take the stress out of waiting for your foal to arrive Foaling predictor kits or foaling alarms can save you allot of sleepless nights and improve the chances of being there when your foal is born. Foaling predictor test kits are simple to use, you take a small sample of your mare’s milk and mix it with distilled water. Dip a test pad into the mixture, the pad will change colour. You then match the pads colour to the six coloured squares on the chart.

If your pad matches the fourth square you are getting closer but unlikely that there will be a foal in the next 24 hours. While the tests work very well, they are meant as an aid to good horse husbandry. Foaling prediction tests are a fantastic aid to any breeders foaling kit and can be a great cure for lack of sleep during foaling season. Foaling alarms let you know when your mare lays down in the foaling position so you can be there if assistance is needed The foaling alarm transmitter (pictured right) is non invasive only weighs 170g and fits on to any size standard halter and transmits a signal back to a base station when your mare lays down in the foaling position. This is invaluable in evaluating what your mare is doing before dragging yourself out of bed.

Fortunately, the foaling process is uneventful for most mares, requiring little, if any, intervention. Labor is divided into three stages: Stage one begins with the onset of contractions and generally lasts one to two hours. Even in a normal delivery, the mare may stand up, lie down and roll several times in an effort to properly position the foal for delivery. During this phase, contractions move the foal through the cervix and into position in the birth canal. The fetal membranes (allantois) may become visible at the mare's vulva. When the sac breaks, signaled by a rush of fluid, stage one ends. This rupture and rush of placental fluids may be confused with urination. Stage two is the actual expulsion of the foal. This phase moves relatively quickly. If it takes more than 30 minutes for the mare to deliver, there is most likely a problem. Normal presentation of the foal resembles a diving position, with front feet first, one slightly ahead of the other, hooves down, followed closely by the nose, head, neck, shoulders and hindquarters. Stage three labor begins after delivery and is the phase during which the afterbirth (placenta) is expelled. Most placentas are passed within one to three hours after the foal is delivered. Be a prepared and informed owner so you can enjoy the miracle of birth.

Riding for Disabled Tweed branch is in need of horses

Countdown is on to the World Equestrian Games

The Riding for Disabled Association’s Tweed Valley centre at Stokers Siding looking for suitable geldings (preferably) for the riders who attend the centre. The centre was established 22 years ago, has no paid staff and relies on the 45 volunteers to assist 55 riders who attend each week. The centre has 10 horses at the moment but is looking for more. If anyone has one they feel may be suitable the horses are extremely well looked after at the centre , actually horse heaven. The centre can either lease or accept the horse if given by the owner. Terms can be worked out suitable to both parties. The horses are mainly used at the walk for led riders, a few are more independent riders can manage more. The main requirement is of cause being quiet and trustworthy. If you can help or for more information, contact the Tweed Valley RDA centre on 0419 437 217.

The countdown is well and truly on to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy, France. The WEG will begin from August 23 and run until September 7. plans are well advanced for a number of test events coming up with the first being eventing later this month, which will include an Australian contingent led by Andrew Hoy. Already, more than 85,000 tickets have been purchased since the ticket office opened in June. The WEG will utilise the sevices of 5000 volunteers with that figure well on the way to being reached. Indeed no fewer than 11% of the volunteers already registered live overseas, across 17 countries, including Australia, the United States,

Choosing the right stable bedding for a horse By BOB ANTHONY Choosing the right and appropriate bedding for horses is very important as it has a direct impact on their comfort and health. The main things to consider when choosing a bedding are: will it provide warmth and comfort for your horse? will it be absorbent and easy to clean? will it protect your horse from injury and lessen concussion from hard floors and prevent slipping? is it safe and non toxic? and is it cost effective? In Australia the main choices for bedding straw, sawdust, shavings, sand, shredded paper, rice hulls, hemp horse bedding, pelletised straw bedding and rubber mattings. Straw bedding provides good drainage and allows fluid to pass through it and drain away but you must have an adequate drainage system on the stable floor to remove the fluid. A disadvantage of straw as a bedding is that some horses will eat it. This is not dangerous in itself but does become a problem if soiled straw is eaten as parasites are ingested and digestion can be disrupted. It is also a nuisance if the horse is being fattened and the diet is being controlled. By eating the bedding, the horse disrupts the feeding schedule and takes in too much roughage for peak fitness to be achieved. The four types of straw bedding are: Wheat Straw - Wheat is the best bedding straw. It has a hard stem, so it does not flatten quickly under the weight of the horse. This is important for drainage. It is commonly used as a bedding material. Oat Straw - Oat straw is softer than wheat straw and so inclined to be more absorbent. It is expensive as it has feeding value to cattle and horses. Barley Straw - This is not a very good bedding straw because it can irritate the skin and eyes. It also harbours lice more easily than other straws. Rye Straw - This is very good bedding, being hard, but not easy to obtain. Sawdust and shavings are an absorbent bedding that soaks up moisture and retains it. It is also good to use when the drainage system in the stable is poor. Sawdust is inexpensive (and sometimes

Choosing the right bedding for your horse can impact on their health and well being.

free if collected from timber yards). It's easy to manage and light to handle. Pine sawdust smells pleasant and has both a deodorising and antiseptic effect. It is excellent bedding if the horse needs to be very fit. Unlike some bedding, it will not be eaten. On the down side sawdust is very heating for the feet and clogs the hooves if damp. It can also become maggoty. It is important that it is well managed. Shavings are less dusty and slightly less absorbent than sawdust but otherwise these two materials share the same properties. It makes good bedding if droppings and wet patches are removed frequently. Shavings and sawdust are often used together. The sawdust should be used as a bottom layer as it is more absorbent and is dusty. Sand drains well and can be good bedding in hot, dry climates. Unfortunately it can cause sand colic when eaten by the horse. Only washed river sand should be used as the salt in beach sand will encourage horses to lick and ingest their bedding. Shredded paper has good potential for bedding as it is absorbent and allows some drainage. It is completely dust free which is of benefit to chesty horses and also prevents light

THE STABLE GUY

coloured horses from picking up stable stains. It makes a warm bed but does not overheat. It is light to handle, and can be packaged in bales which are easier to move. It makes good use of waste paper (eg. newsprint), and the soiled bedding will rot down quickly to compost. Hemp horse bedding is a relatively new product that is produced from the soft core of the hemp plant stem. Hemp bedding contains negligible dust and spores compared to conventional bedding, providing a cleaner stable environment particularly important for horses suffering respiratory illness. More importantly, hemp helps to prevent such problems from developing. It is warm and comfortable, stays drier longer and has a soft and spongy feel. Hemp provides excellent insulation against the cold concrete flooring, and protection from injury. Its `non-slip’ properties make it an ideal bedding during transport. Pelletised straw bedding has been used successfully around the world and can absorb up to five times its own weight in liquid. Urine is typically absorbed in one small area and is easily removed. The pellets break apart into a soft base that remains consistent over time. An even coverage of stable floors ensures horses are protected from cold and dampness and a soft, comfortable bedding is provided for sore or tired muscles and joints. It is processed to reduce contaminants in the air with dust being extracted during production. This produces an environment that is healthier for horses prone to respiratory ailments made from high quality wheat straw and produced using a state of the art processing plant. During production the product is heat treated, reducing bacteria, yeast and mould commonly found in unprocessed straw or wood shavings. This process ensures consistent delivery of the highest quality product. Essential oils are added during the production process to discourage horses eating the product. These oils reduce odour and assist in maintaining a fresh, healthy stable environment.

TIPS WHEN IT COMES TO STABLE DESIGN When it comes to stable design, we may all have our own ideas of what we want but there a few simple measures to take in to ensure your stables are safe and practical. Design aisles wide enough for two horses to pass through without touching. Make them wide enough for the handler and horse to be able to turn around and maneuver without trouble. You need to design a wash area, the storage area, the tack room and the stalls.

A clean bedding system in a stable is crucial to maintaining your horse’s health.

Options for bedding systems in stables For many horse owners , there isn’t a lot of choice when it comes to bedding systems for their animals. It will depend on the size and scope of your property and what you can afford to maintain. 1. Complete Muck Out In this system, all soiled and wet bedding is removed and replaced with clean material regularly. It is costly for both fresh bedding and time. The advantages are that the stable floor is aired once a day, and soiled/wet material is less likely to build up unnoticed. This would be common practice for the majority of horse owners. 2. The Deep Litter or Continental System In this system, only wet bedding is removed daily. Droppings are shaken to the bottom of the bed and fresh bedding material is laid on top. The droppings and old bedding begin to decompose and give off heat so a warm bed is formed. The deep litter bed is economical. Very little fresh bedding is added each day because so little is removed when mucking out. Mucking out does not take as long as the complete muck out system, although care must be taken to remove wet patches. It can make a very warm bed, but great care must be taken to prevent it overheating. Overheating occurs when too much urine is left in the bed. The urine quickens the composting process that is taking place and thus the tempera-

ture of the bed is raised. A big disadvantage is that a large amount of material accumulates in the stable, which has to be removed at least every six months. The material can become compacted. When deciding which system to use, several things should be thought of. If you're doing the mucking out yourself, and you are small or not very strong (or if you are not confident about managing a deep litter bed), it is far better to go for the complete muck out system. Although this will be more expensive than the deep litter system, and will take more time each morning, it is a small price to pay as you will be sure that the horse's bed is healthy. The time of year must be thought about. In winter the warmth of the deep litter bed, plus the fact that less time is needed for mucking out, may be important. In summer, the complete muck out may help to reduce the number of flies and other biting insects. Large establishments will find the deep litter system economical, particularly if they have a tractor to handle the heavy work of completely removing beds every six months. The experienced horse owner who is confident about managing the deep litter bed will also find it a good system. It will reduce the time spent mucking out, and leave more time to enjoy riding.

When it comes to size of a stable, the recommended size is about 3m x 3m to 3.6m x 3.6m for an average riding horse. Build ceilings high enough to handle a horse and rider or a rearing horse. Make them at least 2.7m or higher and that should be enough. Make sure your lighting fixtures are mounted out of major pathways and out of the horses' reach. If you can't keep them away from the horses, then encase them in wire cages. Decide what materials to buy. The outside of most barns are metal while the insides and individual stalls are made of heavy, dense wood. Base the size of the stalls on the size of your horses. Consider ventilation, water, fire safety and electrical needs. Consider drainage when building a stable. Stall drainage is important and keeps urine away from your horses' hooves, and from damaging your barn. Most championship barns are built on gravel, layered with clay and then have heavy duty stall mats in each stall. The stalls have an outward slant and the barn is placed on a hill, with gentle slopes on each side to allow for maximum drainage. The most commonly used flooring in stables is concrete. If the surface is roughened, it is non-slip. Concrete, pavers, or stone floors will not drain naturally, and drains may have to be placed in stalls. Many stables do not have drainage. This means stalls must be well cleaned to avoid ammonia build up. Hard flooring such as pavers or concrete are also easier to disinfect and can be hosed down if necessary. These floors are harder on a horse's legs though. Many people put stall mats made of rubber like material under the bedding for greater comfort. If you have sandy soil, you may decide to leave the earth and not lay down a solid floor. This flooring is easier on the horses legs, may be warmer and quieter than an un-matted solid floor. Earth floors are harder to clean, and will need digging out and replacing if the dirt becomes too saturated.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

HEALTHY AND VIBRANT HORSES Ekwizorb pellets create an insulating, soft and durable bedding that is highly absorbent, easy to clean and assists in keeping the stable environment free of ammonia and stable smells. Due to the pellets being heat treated when manufactured the bedding reduces harmful bacteria, yeast and mould often found in the stable environment. The inclusion of natural oils assists in hoof health, while the inclusion of eucalyptus oil assists in natural insect control.

COST EFFECTIVE STABLE SOLUTION Considerably less bedding is utilised on a daily basis, resulting in a product that is cost friendly and reduces waste volume by up to 60% over bedding such as shavings and straw. The product is packed in easy to handle and store 15kg bags, allowing you to manage your stable in an effective, safe manner. Ekwizorb is a custom stable product verse by-product and as such reliable supply all year round is guaranteed.

INITIAL STABLE SET UP 1. Clean out all old bedding to prepare stable for introduction of ekwizorb. 2. Place 6 bags of bedding in a 3.5m x 3.5m stable (Additional bedding may need to be used on concrete flooring) 3. Spread the bedding evenly around stable, on initial set up some of the flooring may be visible in areas, this is normal as the bedding ‘fluffs’ considerably over the next 24-48 hours. 4. The bedding will transform into a soft, cushioned surface. Note: on initial set up your horse may nibble at the bedding, this is quite safe and as the bedding transforms into soft, cushioned fibres the horse will stop nibbling.

STABLE MAINTENENCE 1. Remove solids and saturated patches morning and night 2. Rake bedding so that bedding is redistributed into the pee area 2. Each week top the stable up with 1-3 bags new bedding – rake old bedding into area where the horse pees and distribute the new bedding into the area of the stable the horse uses least frequently. This ensures fresh bedding is constantly rotated through the stable and dust and allergens are kept at a minimum. 3. Every 6 – 12 months the stable can be completely emptied and refreshed (some stables find that they can manage the bedding so that a complete clean out is never required) Note: In really hot weather the bedding can be hosed to assist in providing the horse a cool, dust free environment. The bedding can be saturated and performance is not compromised.

THE BIGGEST PRO’S 1. Reduces stable smells, the need to use lime is eradicated and cleaning stables becomes a more pleasant experience. 2. Stables are quick to clean, manure and urine are easy to locate and remove from the stable with very little loss of bedding. 3. Stable waste is dramatically reduced and can be put straight onto gardens or in compost heaps. 4. The high absorbency of the bedding combined with the inclusion of essential oils means that greasy heel is a thing of the past, the bedding is so effective that paddocked horses with greasy heel can be stabled on the bedding to assist in effective management or treatment of an outbreak. We invite you to visit our website or facebook page for additional information about ekwizorb stable bedding.

ALSO SUITABLE FOR PENS, HUTCHES AND KITTY LITTER TRAYS! Ekwizorb has been shown to significantly reduce the cage cleaning frequency in pens and hutches as well as the smell associated with the keeping of poultry, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other rodents. Increased cage cleanliness leads to healthier, happier animals.

Correct saddle fitting is crucial to performance Supplied by PERFORMANCE SADDLEFIT Just as humans chose the right footwear or clothing for the job or function at hand, so too is it important when it comes to saddles and horses. Not only is saddle fit critical for the comfort of the horse but it directly influences the horse’s performance. A horse will feel discomfort, muscle fatigue, bruises and nerve pain exactly the same as we do; and while they can tell us directly, they can show through poor performance, a change in personality and sometimes dangerous behaviour. A horse was not designed to carry a rider and saddle, which can restrict and inhibit them. While a horse can run, jump and balance perfectly well in nature, when a rider and saddle is added, this massively changes the way the horse moves and its ability to do a job. It is crucial, as horse owners, riders, trainers and saddle fitters, to ensure the saddle, with the rider’s weight balanced on top, does not alter the way he was built to move. Hence with this in mind, correct saddle fitting will help build the relationship between horse and rider to mutual benefit.

A saddle that fit your horse properly is crucial to ensuring that both horse and rider get the most out of each other.

There are several questions often asked about this component to horse riding. Why do we need a saddle fit assessment? A saddle fit assessment is designed to enable you as an owner to find the appropriate, well fitting saddle for you and your horse for your chosen discipline. A horse’s ability to perform comfortably under saddle depends entirely on whether the equipment put on him allows him to do so with ease, whilst carrying the weight of a rider. A rider needs an understanding of his shape, how he moves, how his muscles function,

and how saddle fit affects this in order to make an informed choice. With a thorough assessment of the horse’s conformation, condition, movement, muscle tone and fitness, we can give him the best chance at peak performance and comfort. What is a saddle fit assessment – what should I expect? Horse Body Assessment: We will need to have the horse standing square on firm, flat ground so we can assess his conformation, weight, condition, the symmetry of his muscle structure and tone, hoof balance, measure his gullet width, bearing length and test for any is-sues arising from previous saddles. All of these points alter saddle fit. We then like to walk and trot the horse inhand to assess movement and any irregularities that might affect saddle fit. Saddle Assessment off the Horse: If you are having your own saddle assessed, we conduct a saddle ‘health’ check to make sure there are no issues with wear and tear, unevenness in the tree or flocking that may affect your horse. Saddle on the Horse: This is the major part of the saddle fit assessment. Continued Page 21

The correct saddle fit will bring beneficial results From Page 20

We work through a choice of saddles looking at appropriate tree shape, balance, width and clearance, gullet and channel width, panel width and pitch, girthing options and the saddle in movement on the horse. From here we make a short list of saddles for the rider to try. Rider Assessment on the Horse: From our short list of saddles, we do a ridden assessment for suitability and comfort for the rider. If we are providing a custommade option, we will also template and photograph the horse on completion of the ridden portion. What do I need to do to prepare? - Allow 90minutes for the assessment and ridden evaluation. - Our assessment needs to be conducted on firm, flat ground and in an area where the horse can be walked and trotted for a short distance in hand, as well as an area that is flat and safe to ride in. - In the case of bad weather, we will require an under-cover area for our horse and saddle assessments and arrangements need to be made to ride in a covered arena if one is not available at the booking location. If this is not possible, the appointment will need to be rescheduled as a thorough assess

We will need him in from the paddock, clean and ready to be ridden. - If the horse is likely to be ‘fresh’ and unable to stand still for assessment, please ensure he is lunged or ridden for a short time before we arrive and then untacked again for our physical assessment. - It may be a good idea if the horse has not been trotted in hand before, to practise a few times be-fore the day of assessment as it can excite horses unfamiliar with this. Remember your health is important too! By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist I find it quite disturbing to hear my patients and clients say that their health is not the best, but oh well I need to get on with the day, feed the horses, work the horses, clean the horses, clean the paddock, buy rugs for the horses, worm the horses, shoe the horses, have the horses massaged. ‘But what about me’ well it seems ‘me’ is clearly neglected. Your health is absolutely vital, because without excellent health who will look after your horses? I believe it is time to take that step towards longevity, to feeling good not only within yourself but about yourself, to have increased energy levels, to prevent premature ageing. I recently asked 10 female adult riders a number of questions about their health, not one of these ladies said they felt terrific, they all said they lacked energy, they were tired most of the time, they thought they ate a healthy diet, but when I quizzed them further, what they thought was a healthy diet was in fact a long way from a healthy diet. Most found it hard to fit everything into a day, all were aged between 40 and 55. Most said they did not have time to go to the gym or walk the dog, most felt that riding was sufficient exercise. If one is healthy, energy levels should be surging at this time of their lives. So what can we do about it? Firstly it is important to believe that you can do something about it and that you can alter the course of your life, by simply making some changes. Many foods are not suited to certain individuals and in fact have a negative effect on health, for example some individuals should not eat olive oil as this may have a negative effect on your good cholesterol and actually drive up LDL’s.

Its important to look after your self and stay fit and healthy cause if you don’t who will look after your horses

Some individuals need more carbohydrates that others and some will find that carbohydrates are their enemy. A one size fits all approach to nutrition just will not cut it! Skipping meals and then snacking during the day is also very common with busy people, this is very unhealthy for the body and the metabolism. It is really great to see that there are now many articles written about other modalities such as Applied Posture Riding, but unless you are healthy and a healthy weight all those wonderful things that professionals such as Annette Wilson, Richard Mitton and Tanja Mitton teach may be wasted. It is a scientific fact that nutrition along with specific lifestyle changes can support our strengths and balance our weaknesses; our genes hold the solution to determining our lifestyle and nutrient wellbeing. There is really no clear cut solution to ensure that we stay healthy, but what we can do is take more control and this includes preventative measures which should be right up there at the top of our list. Nutrition and Science Genomic Science or Nutrigenomics has given practitioners like me a very large box of tools to improve the health and well being of patients but also put preventative measures into place. A simple saliva test can unlock doors to people’s health and longevity. Genome science began formally in 1990 and studies have continued to discover the most amazing responses connected to the human genome and how nutrition can turn your gene expression on and off! Did you know that the DNA between two individual people is about 99.9% the same, except for identical twins, only a small fraction of our DNA account for the key ways in

Page 22

which one human differs so much from the other? Nutrigenomics is a combination of the sciences of genetics and nutrition that reveals personalized information regarding an individual’s status and provides the basis for selecting a dietary and nutritional program best suited to achieving the healthiest and longest life possible. * Nutrigenomics uses SNP (Single nucleotide polymorphism) testing to identify areas of an individual’s genetic make-up that may be functioning less than optimally. * Nutrigenomics will help guide individuals in choosing the optimal combination of nutrients and vitamins, matched to their unique genetic make-up. A Single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP (pronounced snip) is a DNA sequence variation occurring when a single nucleotide - A, T, C, or G - in the genome (or other shared sequence) differs between members of a species (or between paired chromosomes in an individual). For example, two sequenced DNA fragments from different individuals, AAGCCTA to AAGCTTA, contain a difference in a single nucleotide. In this case we say that there are two alleles : C and T. Almost all common SNPs have only two alleles. Within a population, SNPs can be assigned a minor allele frequency - the ratio of chromosomes in the population carrying the less common variant to those with the more common variant. * continued page 23

The Horse Report Campaign launched to save India’s indigenous horse Legend has it that in the 12th century AD, a group of people that would later be known as the Rathores, were exiled from their homeland in India. Sheoji, the man who would be the father of the Rathores, rode out proudly with a group of faithful pilgrims to find a new home. Their will was of iron, and their horses were strong and fast. Together, they would settle in a region called the Marwar, in Rajasthan, to start a new life. The horses that bore them were integral to their survival and represented the pride and strength of the people. Over many years, they grew into the regal Marwari breed, and their beauty and power was known to all, represented by their distinctive inwardly pointed ears. When a Marwari horse moved through the city streets, the commoners would bow before it. Yet while their heads faced the ground, their eyes would strain upward to get a glimpse of the almost mythical creature. For hundreds of years, this legendary horse would reign as the

An international campaign has been launched to preserve the noble and majestic Marwari horse of India.

symbol of Marwari aristocracy. In the early 1800s, the British colonials came to India to stake their claim. They brought with them an English way of life and their soldiers rode tall Thoroughbreds.

How important is your health *continued from page 22 It is important to note that there are variations between human populations, so a SNP allele that is common in one geographical or ethnic group may be much rarer in another. Single nucleotide polymorphisms may fall within coding sequences of genes, noncoding regions of genes, or in the inter-genic regions between genes. SNPs within a coding sequence will not necessarily change the amino acid sequence of the protein that is produced, due to degeneracy of the genetic code. A SNP in which both forms lead to the same polypeptide sequence is termed synonymous (sometimes called a silent mutation) - if a different polypeptide sequence is produced they are non-synonymous. SNPs that are not in protein coding regions may still have consequences for gene splicing, transcription factor binding, or the sequence of non-coding RNA. By having this test it means that now you can use a more scientific approach to being proactive in doing your best to prevent health problems that might otherwise occur later in life. We all know that good nutritional care is important in preventing cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis, and in defending against other diseases, but nutrigenomics takes the ability to manage our health to a totally different level. This simple saliva test also provides you with a full Physiogenomic profile so you will know if you are anaerobic or aerobic and what exercise program is best for you as an individual. For free information please email info@prosportsnutragenomix.com or simply phone us on 1300443676 for a free 10 minute consultation we can discuss how we can help improve your health, we would love to hear from you. You may be able to claim part of the testing and consultation through your private health fund.

Naturally, the English saw their own horses as the height of equine breeding and many Marwari horses were killed to stop interbreeding. After World War II, the colonials withdrew from India, leaving behind a scarred country. The aftermath of this continued to hasten the downfall of the Marwari, as Indian noblemen were stripped of their land and assets and even more horses suffered due to their inability to properly care for them. The Marwari horse was all but forgotten and over the course of 150 years, the breed was pushed to the very brink of extinction. In the late 20th century, one of the remaining Indian lords, a man named Raghuvendra `Bonnie’ Singh Dundlod and an American horsewoman named Francesca Kelly, set their minds to saving the breed. Francesca had attended one of `Bonnie’s’ horse riding tours of the region and had been so moved by `Bonnie’ and the Marwari horse’s story that she decided to dedicate her life to the conservation of the breed. Within a few years, they founded the Indigenous Horse Society of India, an international society for the preservation and revitalisation of the breed. Finding these friends, the Marwari horse began to thrive again. Although the Marwari Horse

has faced many challenges and was once near extinction, they have struggled for a foothold. However, the challenges they currently face could tip the precarious balance irretrievably. The Indian Government has instigated an export ban on the Marwari and breeders, many of whom live in hard circumstances, have excess stock. Good feed is not only expensive but is also very hard to find. They also face issues ranging from drought to little to no professional veterinary care and cruel and inhumane horse training practices, much like the dancing bears, due to lack of education and more modern horse equipment. `Bonnie’ Singh Dundlod and Francesca Kelly contacted Frazzica Productions to make a documentary on the plight of these amazing indigenous horses, which they have done with their own money because they believe in the cause. Frazzica Productions hope to launch this documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in the US this month and promote it world -wide to raise awareness and funds to help Indian support the existing horses and also provide education and equipment to ensure a kinder way of training. These rare horses need help and so does the Indigenous Horse Society of India which is looking to preserve the breed. Visit Frazzica Productions website at www.marwarimovie.com for more information on the documentary. There is also a fundraising website for the horses at www.indiegogo.com/projects/ma rwari

The Horse Report

When is Your Horse Old By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Just like people, horse's age in different ways and age sometimes is not the only reason why a horse is feeling old or lacking energy. Workload and stress can age horses just like people. It can also have a major impact on Oxidative Stress, Phase 1 & 2 Detox and can certainly have an influence on inflammation. It is essential to ensure that your older horse has the correct daily nutrient intake to manage is health on a long term basis. Finding the right balance is important and this is determined by the individual requirements of each horse. Horses are rated as middle aged from the age of 13 years and most horses, like people are in the prime of their life at this age. We really must consider the consequences if our horses are not as healthy as they could be. Not being fully fit, having some degenerative joint changes, hard work, stress and diet will play a huge role in management. Just because a horse is older does not necessarily mean he requires a special diet; aging is not a disease, it is a normal process. However, many older horses with individual physical or nutritional needs might benefit from being fed a specific diet or feed modification(s) to maintain good health and body condition. Routine examinations, vaccination, de-worming, dental care, and farrier visits are integral parts of horse ownership and can potentially minimize the development of feeding-related issues as horse's age. We now have a generation of horses that received this type of management on a regular basis and more horses are living and working until they are in their late 20s, 30s, and beyond. A 15-year-old horse might have physical problems due to age (tooth loss, arthritis, metabolic problems) and require a special diet, but you might have a 25-year-old horse that needs no special nutritional care whatsoever, it is simply down to each individual's genetic make up and how their health has been managed. All required nutrients must be provided at

Maintain health with regular examinations, vaccination, de-worming and dental care Page 28

the correct levels at all times to maintain normal body function and health. Naturally the optimum amount of any single nutrient will depend on the individual requirements this will vary depending on the attribute of each horse, genetic predisposition, temperament, environmental situations, stress, infection and even pregnant mares. More recent studies have provided practitioners, especially nutritionists with further tools to assist in the treatment of various conditions and diseases, providing the correct levels are used for the right situation and that there is no compromising of the health and wellbeing of the horse. This is certainly the case with any nutrients being used to assist with diseases, nutritionally related diseases or conditions etc. There may be certain individuals who require higher levels of nutrients than others and there are other ways of providing more accurate testing being developed including Gene testing. Using amino acids with other nutrients is another way of assisting with a particular need of the animal, once this has been established. We must also remind ourselves that whilst there is a division of nutrients into categories, such as vitamins, amino acids, minerals etc. there is a very long sequence of activity involving these nutrients and that this sequence may break down or become ineffective. This means that nutrients may then not be available at optimum levels. What may be normal requirements for one horse of amino acids may be bordering on deficient for another. This is where ROA's (recommended optimal allowances) are becoming of high importance. The bioavailability of the nutrient, the way it is transported, absorbed and utilized at the cellular level are all aspects that must be contemplated if there is a deficiency assumed. I highly recommend for older horses using a preventative measure such as a joint product, but also look at a natural daily formula to support his/her health. A good diet will consist of plenty of roughage including pasture, hays, grains and oils if required. Perhaps some extra support with increasing weight may be necessary, I recommend the EquiSoy. Feeds such as Johnson's Natural Formulas would also be ideal in my opinion as these feeds are steamed and compressed, but are a fibre based feed and a beautifully synergistic feed unlike any other. Why do I like these feeds so much? Because they encourage normal chewing and digestion, that is something I get excited about. Remember if your horse is an older horse and working 4-5 times a week there is great demand mentally and physically. For free advice on managing the older horse please contact me antoinette@hiform.com.au or phone 1300HIFORM

Just because a horse is older does not necessarily mean he requires a special diet;

Forages, such as hay, make up the largest portion of the equine diet by weight

Lifespan of a horse Depending on breed, management and environment, the modern domestic horse has a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years. Uncommonly, a few animals live into their 40s and, occasionally, beyond. The oldest verifiable record was "Old Billy", a 19th-century horse that lived to the age of 62 In modern times, Sugar Puff, who had been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest living pony, died in 2007 at age 56. In 2012 the oldest living horse was recorded to be Shayne a 51 yo chestnut stallion residing at the Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary in Brentwood, Essex Regardless of a horse or pony's actual birth date, for most competition purposes a year is added to its age each January 1 of each year in the Northern Hemisphere and each August 1 in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Horse Report

Equestrian NSW announces Hendra virus policy Equestrian NSW has announced its policy regarding the Hendra Virus vaccination and the requirements for all horses entering EA/FEI events in NSW, where any horses stay overnight at the event venue i.e. Hendra Vaccinated Events (HVEs), to be vaccinated against Hendra Virus as of January1, 2014. Equestrian NSW has a responsibility to its members, horses, event organisers and venues to implement a policy to protect equine and human health. Widespread vaccination would effectively prevent future human and equine fatalities. ENSW is currently in talks with Zoetis, the producer of the Hendra vaccine, to continue to offer the vaccine as affordably as possible for EA registered horses only for a short time. As part of this initiative, ENSW will also offer a 50% reduction on the cost of EA online base horse registrations on the proviso that members taking up this offer also vaccinate against Hendra. More details on the offer from Zoetis for vaccines and the date online base horse registrations will be up and running via EA Online will be announced in the near future. ENSW is also working through processes to enable event organisers to take advantage of the Zoetis database to confirm vaccination status of all horses entered in HVEs to make administration of this policy as simple and effective as possible. Equestrian NSW is in no doubt that should a case of Hendra Virus be identified at an EA/FEI event, significant consequences to event organisers, venues and indeed ENSW members and their horses would occur. Horses that are in close contact with each other over a length of

time are at risk. Zoetis, has rationalized the cost of the vaccine during the initial vaccination phase. Zoetis has an efficient means of tracking vaccinations and EA and its event organisers will be able to take advantage of the Zoetis database for purposes of verifying vaccination status of entries. ENSW advises that should a case/s of Hendra Virus be reported prior to the January 1, 2014 implementation date for this policy for HVEs, members may be unable to attend any EA/FEI event held in NSW if their horses are not vaccinated. ENSW members are strongly encouraged to vaccinate all their horses, competition or otherwise, if they are at risk. Risk factors include: living in a bat habitat area, humans having close contact with their horses and/or competing against horses from other areas or with unknown vaccination status. All horses attending HVEs regardless of state of origin must be vaccinated. Regardless of whether a horse attending a HVE is staying overnight it must be fully vaccinated, this applies equally to horses attending only for a few hours tethered to float or truck. Zoetis is advising that horses require two courses of vaccine for full protection, with a minimum 42 days required from initial vaccination to full protection (with a second course able to be administered after 21 days). EA events that run in NSW where no horses stay overnight are exempt from requiring mandatory vaccinations from entered horses at this time. For more information contact Wendy Cohen, CEO Equestrian NSW by calling 02 9620 2660 or email wendy@efansw.com.au

Pony Club Association NSW Council strongly recommends that all pony club members vaccinate their horses against the Hendra virus and supports any zone or club who have introduced by-laws in regard to vaccinations. The PCANSW recommends that all members to contact their local Department of Primary Industry for further updates. Information on biosecurity measures to be implemented by members is available on 02 6391 3100 or through the website at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/aboutus/about/contact

What’s Happening FAR NORTH COAST DRESSAGE On August 31 and September 1, the Summerland Dressage Club will hold its major event; The Far North Coast Championships at the Bangalow showgrounds in this beautiful and historic village. This year for the first time on the Far North Coast the event will be part of the “Regional Dressage Festival Series” an initiative of Dressage NSW supported by Equestrian NSW. The Regional Dressage Series aims to support dressage in NSW regional areas with events already enjoyed in 2013 in Canberra, the Upper Hunter and near Young. This will be an exceptional opportunity for competitors in this and adjoining regions and reflects the strength of the Summerland Dressage Club and our events. The additional sponsorship and support from Dressage NSW will assist the club in sourcing top quality judges for the two day event and will offer tests from Preliminary to Grand Prix. TRAC INTERSCHOOL CHALLENGE On the weekend of October 26 and 27, a major and unforgettable event will occur in the Wagga Wagga area. That event is The Riverina Anglican College Interschool Equestrian Challenge Wagga Wagga The event has also secured the attendance of Joann Formosa, who was Australia’s Gold medal Winner in the Dressage at the London 2012 Para-Olympic games last year. Joann will be judging at the event and then the couple (Joann and her winning horse, Worldwide PB) will deliver a repeat of her Gold medal routine on the Sunday after lunch. This is one of a very few events of this kind to offer special needs children from the local RDA centres the chance to represent their respective schools in an interschool’s event This event will give local RDA kids not only the recognition they need, but also that they deserve. With the addition of Joann Formosa attending the event, all children will have the chance to see what can be achieved through hard work and commitment, not only the RDA kids but able-bodied children as well. Joann is a fantastic ambassador for the RDA and the Challenge is extremely proud and privileged to have her attend this event. It is the TRAC Interschool committee’s belief that this year’s event will be the beginning of something really big for the children of the Riverina and will continue to grow and become a stronger event as each year passes. This event is open to any school-aged child from Years 2 through to Year 12 from any school, either public or private ,from any state in Australia. The event is an Equestrian Australia (a National Sporting governing body) based event with all Dressage, Jumping and Showmanship competitions run under EA rules. The EA Interschool Challenges are extremely popular in both Queensland and Victoria and are becoming popular here in NSW as well, as the amount of competitions are growing in number each year.

Acute laminitis means there’s no time to waste By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic It is correct that laminitis can present in many different ways, grades and forms. Likewise, there are many different possible causes of laminitis. Ultimately however, the end result is the same, damaged, disrupted, and destroyed lamina. The lamina consist of myriads of tiny interdigitizing leaves of tissue on the inner surface of the horny hoof wall and the outer surface of the vascular layers of tissue that covers the pedal bone of the foot. These `fingers’ bind tightly together and serve to hold the hoof wall in place and their integrity is critical in maintaining a healthy balanced foot that is in harmony with all the forces that come to play in the normal function of the foot. It is the study and understanding of these forces that has provided the major breakthrough in our ability to manage and treat horses that are unfortunate enough to suffer a bout of laminitis The wall, sole, frog and digital cushion form the `support’ components of the hoof and each are subjected to enormous forces as the foot loads and unloads during locomotion. The `suspension’ components of the hoof are primarily the lamina and the deep flexor tendon and they serve to hold the pedal bone in its normal position within the hoof capsule. The deep flexor tendon is a major component of support as it is stretched and loaded

Recognition of the symptoms of laminitis combined with prompt action can minimize the devastating effects.

and bears the brunt of the weight as the foot loads. This `stretch’ is counteracted by the rigid integrity of the lamina and equilibrium is maintained within the foot. The tendon is very strong and is firmly attached to the bottom of the pedal bone. The only time there is not load and pull in the tendon is when the foot is off the ground during motion. Therefore the lamina are under constant tension, even as the horse is seemingly inactive and sleeping. Simplistically, when the horse suffers laminitis, the lamina are damaged and are no longer able to maintain their integrity and

counteract the pull of the flexor tendon. They disrupt and give way and the horse founders. Obviously there are going to be very many grades of damage and disruption, but inevitably, in any bout of laminitis, there is going to be some degree of displacement of the pedal bone from its normal position within the hoof capsule. The critical, and primary goal of treatment, is to minimise this displacement. Treatment modalities have to be directed at counteracting whatever the primary cause or source of wherever the toxin has come from to stop further damage and destruction of the lamina, but presuming this has been done, the most important aspect of attempting to minimise the disastrous effects of this damage is to maintain the integrity, and relationships of the position of the pedal bone within the hoof capsule. Understanding the concept of the constant pull of the deep flexor tendon and the loss of ability of the laminar antagonist to withstand this pull is the key to being able to manage and prevent the disastrous consequences of laminitis. What is even more critical, is to realise that as the pedal bone shifts, rotates and changes its normal position, it places pressure on the blood supply to the foot and in severe bouts of laminitis, actually shuts off the supply to parts of the hoof. The Horse Report Speed is crucial in treating the disastrous effects of laminitis From page 34

Once tissues lose their blood supply, they die and it is this damage that ultimately leads to the disastrous effects of the laminitis. Laminitis has to be regarded as one of the really true emergencies that can affect your horse. It is useful to liken it to heart attacks in humans. We all hear of the amazing progress human medicine has made in treating patients who suffer heart attacks. In most cases, these are also loss of blood supply to parts of the heart. If a human suffers a heart attack, many can be saved, provided immediate and urgent attention is provided. Likewise, the hoof in laminitis. It is not satisfactory to see your horse suddenly lame, `glued’ to the ground and to adopt a wait and see attitude to hope it will get better. Tomorrow is too late! All bouts of laminitis are serious. Even relatively mild cases result in some damage and the

Acting quickly in dealing with laminitis can help avoid disastrous effects.

more severe and intense the signs are, the more critical it is to provide immediate relief. The critical elements in treating laminitis are as follows: Remove the cause – To eliminate further ongoing damage Control the pain and inflammation Address the mechanical support of the hoof All elements are essential, but if you fail to support the foot, and to directly counteract the pull of the deep flexor tendon to minimise the disruption of the laminar integrity your horse will suffer permanent damage that will compromise his future and in severe cases, ultimately lead to his death. You must seek immediate professional advice.

Karin Blignault to visit Australia Queensland is in for a treat in September when author and international dressage clinician Karin Blignault visits Australia for the first time. Karin is an FEI level dressage rider with a background in Occupational Therapy. She offers riders of all levels a simple, scientifically based approach with a focus on achieving balance and harmony in horse and rider. With 40 years of riding experience, Karin has trained her horses to the highest level of dressage, competing at FEI level and in jumping and eventing. Karin’s method of teaching is based on sound principles of sports biomechanics as applied to horses as well as to riders. Sport science is logical and step by step. There is nothing vague in this teaching method and every concept is backed by these principles. Communication is the back bone of riding. This method of teaching ensures that riders understand the concepts the first time they are taught and that the horses understand the riders instantly without ambiguity. Three repetitions of the correct technique and timing establishes a new concept for both horse and rider. Learning is thus very fast. Learning to ride classically correct at a high level should not take long. If it does, there is something missing in the teaching process. Karin believes that form follows function and therefore teaches rider coordination and body use rather than focusing on body position. Riders learn to multi-task from the onset and this automatically leads to a correct posture on the horse. The art of riding is all about feel. Karin focuses on teaching riders how to feel and then how to adjust instantly to what they feel. Learning through the teaching of body use, is extremely fast even for the less talented rider. The movements are chunked into `bite size’ pieces. Each section is taught separately and when the rider can do it with ease, the pieces are put back together again. Karin guarantees that the clinic riders will learn, no matter what their levels of riding. She is particularly interested in solving horse and rider problems and has never found a problem she cannot solve. She specialises in correcting mouth problems of pulling, hanging, resistance, lateral tightness and maintaining a steady 'on the bit' frame. Problems such as difficulty in stopping, moving forwards, incorrect canter leads and difficulty in lateral work are corrected immediately. Following the principles of riding hands without legs and legs without hands adds to this easy learning for both horse and rider. It ensures that the horse does not receive two opposing messages. Karin teaches riders of any level or background and is particularly interested in solving training and riding problems. The following two photos were taken on the first and third lesson of this horse and rider. In photo A, the horse was extremely anxious and defensive in her mouth. The rider’s arms and hands were tight and her posting behind the movement. The second photo, B, was taken during the rider’s third lesson. Note the relaxed expression of the horse and the relaxed and soft arms and shoulders of the rider in balance.

Karin is also an accomplished author and her books have been very well received internationally and are recommended reading for equestrian courses including the EA NCAS Coaching Courses and the University of Queensland's Equine Studies Degree. Her books include: SUCCESSFUL SCHOOLING - Train Your Horse with Empathy STRETCH EXERCISES FOR YOUR HORSE EQUINE BIOMECHANICS FOR RIDERS FOUR STEPS TO RIDING SUCCESS - The Art of Balanced Riding (Available by the end of the year)

Well-known trainer, Carlos Tabernaberri is passionate at developing a horse through a good foundation and not through the force of a bit to make him look the part. He believes there are no problems in either the horse or rider, just a lack of communication, understanding and trust. That's why he uses this gentling method, whether introducing a horse to the saddle for the first time or correcting an existing behavioural problem. It ensures improved performance and versatility, regardless of your preferred discipline. Carlos will be covering a broad range of areas, both on the ground and under saddle in his upcoming Moggill clinics . Riders and horses of all ages, disciplines and levels are welcome. Very limited spaces with horses available and fence sitters are also welcome.
