Chambers County Sets Budget Hearing
By Wade Thibodeaux The Chambers County Commissioners Court met in regular session on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 9:30 am. via video conference. The Court set a date of Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at 10:00 am. for a public hearing for the 2021 budget. No discussion was held pertaining to just exactly how the public hearing would occur, but presumably it would be held via video conference just like recent Commissioners Courts have been held as it would be during a regular scheduled Commissioners Court meeting. The Court also approved an 8% maximum voter approval tax rate which would allow the County to increase taxes up to an 8% increase without triggering an election. Commissioners approved accepting a petition for the creation of a drainage district on the West side of the County as well as scheduling a public hearing for its creation for September 8, 2020 at 10:00 am. Much discussion was held concerning the solid waste ordinance for contractors and commercial haulers as well as a trailer policy at the box sites. A motion to charge all commercial haulers $0.025(two and
50 cents
a half cents) a pound beginning November 1, 2020 was approved with a unanimous vote. The trailer policy for residents bringing materials to the box sites created another long winded discussion that ultimately ended in a 4-1 vote with Commissioner Gore voting against the new rule of a 10 foot long trailer being able to dump 1 time per day at the box sites. Commissioner Gore argued for a trailer length of at least 16 feet during the discussion, but eventually lost the vote. A rather long consent agenda was approved after the Commissioners pulled several items from the list for discussion and then the group headed to executive session at 11:55 am. After the Court emerged from executive session, a settlement offer on a condemnation proceeding on a matter relating to Fm 1409 was approved as well as a motion for the County to take part in the Purdue Pharma bankruptcy proceedings as a creditor was approved. The next regular session of the Chambers County Commissioners Court will be Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at 9:30 am. and will be via video conference with information on how to join the meeting on the County's website.
