Concrete Finally Poured at Fire Station

Concrete was finally poured at the Winnie Stowell VFD station to aid the heavy trucks into the building. By Wade Thibodeaux   A long awaited project of pouring concrete at the truck entrance to the Winnie Stowell Fire Station has finally occurred. Several years ago, when the department was having trouble getting the heavy trucks into the station due to ruts being formed in the asphalt from the repeated traveling of the tires in the same exact spot, the Chambers County Emergency Services District No1 approached Chambers County Commissioners Court about concreting the area. The District offered to split the cost with the County even though the District's property ends about a foot away from the building and the concrete

would be on County property. Commissioners Court was hesitant about spending the money and decided to try a special version of "Hard" asphalt instead of the concrete. Within just a few months the original problem returned and after some persistent urging of Commissioner Jimmy Gore, the Court agreed to split the cost of the concrete with the Fire District. That project was completed last week with County crews coming in this week to "Marry up" the newly poured concrete and the roadway where some of the roadway had to be removed for the working room of the concrete job.

Many flags were placed at the graves of fallen military personnel during the recent Memorial Day acknowledgement at Fairview Cemetery in Winnie. Memorial Day is to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their Country. Lest we not forget, freedom is not free. By Wade Thibodeaux

of the National Anthem and Amazing Grace by Lindsay Hedges. Also participating in this year's event was the parents of fallen Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Shane Ronald Bennett.

Commissioner Gore H o s t s To w n H a l l M e e t i n g  Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reports that on Monday, May 24th, 2021, Thomas Andrew Daigle from Dayton, Texas, appeared in 253rd District Court, before the Honorable Chap B. Cain III, for a bond hearing. Daigle is currently under arrest for the Capital Murder of Scott Privat, which occurred on March 19, 2020 in the Double Bayou area of Chambers County. The attorney for Andrew Daigle requested that he be released on a low bond, while the Chambers County District Attorney’s Office argued the importance of keeping an offender, accused of such a violent crime, in

the custody of the Chambers County Jail. Judge Cain agreed that Thomas Daigle should remain in custody at this time and ordered he be held with no bond until his court date. “I am thankful for the continued hard work of our District Attorney’s Office in making sure that justice is served in this violent act of crime. It is good knowing, that we still have people like Judge Cain, that know the importance of keeping violent offenders, from outside of our community, off the streets, until they get their day in court” said Sheriff Hawthorne.

hall meeting last Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 6:00 pm. in the Winnie Stowell Park Community Building to discuss the upcoming issuance of $49Million in Certificates of Obligations by Chambers County. The Commissioners Court voted to issue the debt several meetings ago with Commissioner Gore originally voting against the bonds due to the fact that none of the money would have been spent on the East side of the County. After several town hall meetings and some negotiations, Commissioners Court has decided to split some

of the money for East side and Central County projects while minimizing a few of the projects on the West side of the County. Commissioner Gore is now in favor of the projects that would basically bring new baseball and softball fields to the Winnie and Anahuac area as well as major improvements to infrastructure on the West side of the County. Due to several tax abatements that were issued years ago rolling onto the tax rolls, this new debt should have a minimal impact on the tax rate.
