This year, the need for support and care is greater than ever and The Purse Project Network has big dreams to help meet those needs through their Fall Purse Collection Campaign. They plan to continue their efforts of collecting donated purses during November, all while following proper safety protocols and guidelines from the government.

How Can You Help?

Fill a purse with LOVE and a woman’s heart with HOPE ThePurseProject-CardsofBlessing

S

ince its inception in 2016, The Purse Project has been blessing women through the gift of a donated purse filled with essential personal care items. Over 6,000 purses have passed from donors to The Purse Project and then on to various organizations that serve women in need across Ontario. Organizations have included street missions, women’s emergency shelters, transitional housing services, sexual assault victims services and a women’s prison. Full-time caregivers, single moms, unwed pregnant teens, senior women, teenage girls, refugees and low-income women have also received purses. In January 2020, Gayla Matos & Jill MacKellar took over the directorship of this initiative. They renamed it The Purse Project Network, allowing for more flexibility in serving the community. During this past spring & summer of COVID, The Purse Project Network was able to reach out to those in need in unique ways: • They were able to connect Compassion Society and Elizabeth Fry Society with their contact at Proctor & Gamble, who generously donated personal care comfort kits to these two organizations. • They donated 15 filled purses to Home Suite Hope for the new women joining their program in September. • They ran a summer Gift Card collection campaign and collected $1,305 in gift cards, which were donated to four local charities. • Through the “Cards of Blessing” branch of The Purse Project Network, they were able to hand-craft and handwrite over 800 cards of encouragement that were given to several seniors homes and facilities in Halton and Waterdown as a way to encourage the residents who were secluded and away from family.

Staying Safe this

Thanksgiving

D

Dear Ward 1 Friends and Neighbours. As we enter into the fall season, we are unfortunately seeing an increase in COVID-19 positive case numbers and must now take every opportunity to do our part to help prevent the spread of this virus. With Stage 3, we saw a re-opening of the economy, and schools have now returned to classrooms, whether in person or online. There was an underlying expectation of a second wave and the Province has now announced that it has officially arrived. I am hopeful that if residents embrace and adhere to all of the safety measures currently recommended - masks, social distancing, crowd limitations, contact tracing, hand washing etc. we can prevent the second wave case numbers from rising above those of the first wave. Please do your part and listen to the advice of the public health officials. I have great concerns for our local economy if any further lockdown measures are initiated by upper levels of government. We have already witnessed the difficult decision of many businesses to close due to financial strain, and many more are just barely hanging on, hoping for some economic recovery. Now more than ever, we need to support them the best we can as a community, while respecting the rules and procedures that each business has implemented to keep their customers confident and safe. I have spoken in the past about some of the challenges that I myself (and I imagine many others) have experienced while transitioning to a work from home model. My working environment has certainly changed with the start of the school year. My partner has now gone back to work from maternity leave and each of my 6 children are now engaged daily in childcare, elementary school, high school and college. The silence in the house has certainly been a welcome addition to the working from home environment and all-day zoom meetings! No more angling the computer camera so that meeting attendees do not have to view a diaper change in the background or the multiple interruptions from curious toddlers looking for a snack or teens asking to use the car! Now that I am fully set up in this new routine, I really don’t know how I was able to do all of those meetings with the distractions in the house, and give a lot of credit to my partner for constantly juggling the activities happening on the other side of my office door. City of Burlington senior staff have indicated that a return to

Councillor Galbraith with one of his sons while working from home.

the office at City Hall for a regular working schedule should not be expected until at least the new year. I am not certain that I will ever use my City Hall office as I once did, as I have become used to this new normal in my home office. With Thanksgiving approaching, it is my hope that everyone can enjoy some form of celebration as a family. Please be cautious if you are spending time with family or friends who are not part of your social circle. We as a family have participated in “Zoom Social Hour” with friends and family during these initial stages of COVID-19 and find them very entertaining with the right mix of people and refreshments! I think this may become our standard social routine, given that the second wave is now upon us. In these economically uncertain times, I remind all to consider those less fortunate and to donate to your local food bank or similar organization. I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Stay safe.

JEANINE’S DREAM BY LESLIE STYLES

Jeanine McLean loved life in northern Ontario. It was the final year of her nursing program at Sudbury’s Cambrian College and as an RN she’d soon be able to give back to others the care she herself had received as a little girl. Challenged by a congenital heart defect, she survived numerous hospital stays starting with pacemaker surgery at the young age of two-anda-half. Reaching adulthood, Jeanine had a natural empathy for children who had heart disease. She worked hard to become a cardiac nurse to care for young patients like she had been cared for at Sick Kids Hospital. A beautiful, young lady with a huge smile and sparkling blue eyes, Jeanine had a great sense of humour and cheerful disposition. Apart from her nursing studies she enjoyed music, drawing and painting. All was going well until an unexpected tragedy struck. During Jeanine’s final year of nursing at Cambrian College, she slipped away peacefully in her sleep at age 24, caused by a rare reaction to her pacemaker. Jim McLean, Jeanine’s father, experienced the soul-crushing pain of losing a child. “It never goes away, but you learn to better cope with it.” To honor his daughter, Jim has aimed to raise money for the Cambrian College bursary in his daughter’s name, which originated by Jeanine’s fellow nursing students.

Jim, a Harley riding member of ‘Guardians of the Children Motorcycle Club’, an organization that protects abused and bullied children, was the host of the first ever motorcycle ride/poker run to support Jeanine’s bursary. It took place September 13th, starting and ending at Chuck’s Roadhouse at Upper Middle and Appleby. The route included Fergus and Orangeville and a small parkette in between. At each stop, participants picked up another playing card toward their poker hand. Returning to Chuck’s Roadhouse, the gang enjoyed a silent auction, prizes, a cheeseburger lunch and finishing the poker hand. Money raised went to help nursing students with medical-related issues whether physical, emotional, or mental. Jim feels by contributing to the bursary he has found a way to keep his precious daughter’s dream alive. Tax-deductible donations can still be made by contacting the Cambrian College Foundation at www.cambriancollege.ca/memorialride. The goal is to raise $15,000 so Jeanine’s bursary will become a permanent yearly endowment from Cambrian College. Although Jim can no longer be with his daughter physically, he knows that her spirit and her dream lives on in those who will care for little people, offering comfort at their hospital bedsides.
