IT’S TWENTY BELOW & YOU HAVE NO POWER. WHAT DO YOU DO? Article by: Chris Winter, Green Parkdale-High Park

Massive power failures do happen and it’s often a result of extreme weather. Here’s five things we can do to be ready, in our homes and in our community. 1. BE PREPARED Have an emergency kit or emergency supplies in your home such as flashlights, blankets, a first aid kit, emergency contact information, safety candles, water and a camping stove (for outdoor use). 2. HAVE BACKUP POWER Invest in a small generator or battery storage to provide electricity to essential items, like a fridge in summer heat or the electric fan that keeps your furnace running in the winter. 3. KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY Look out for those around you who may need help in an emergency. Also, know where emergency shelters are in the community, in case you need to leave your home. 4. VOLUNTEER Volunteering with community organizations is a great way to help build a stronger community. In times of crisis, these organizations and their volunteers can play a key role in helping people in need. 5. ORGANIZE Draft a community readiness plan, to identify and support groups that can provide emergency services and to build a volunteer network. Preparing for the worst should also help us build our ongoing community services.

SAVE THE DATE: NO POWER FOR THE HOUR Show your support for being climate ready! Join us for the Annual Earth Hour Walk on March 24th, at 8:30. Two walks, one in Parkdale and one down Roncesvalles, meet at the Queensway. Please see www.greenparkdale.org/blog for details. For more information, see the City of Toronto Emergency Preparedness web page www.toronto.ca/community-people/ public-safety-alerts/emergency-preparedness.

Fat Loss Tips Be sure to include strength training as part of your workout routine. You can include some cardio (running, elliptical, bike, walking, etc.) just make sure that cardio is not the only exercise you do. Strength training can include using machine weights, free weights, body weight or a combination of these. Be sure to have a well-balanced plan that considers any injuries or restrictions that you may have.

TIPS & INSIGHTS

Eat some lean protein in each meal, including snacks. Leading Nutritional experts agree that the recommended amounts of protein are often too low for optimal health. Further, they suggest that people should eat more high-quality sources of protein and avoid too many over processed or refined meats and meat alternatives.

FOR GETTING LEANER FOR SPRING If you are like many people, every March you think about losing a few pounds (or more) and toning up for Summer. You may even want to change your lifestyle and develop some healthier habits to keep you feeling more fit and energized longer term. Making these changes is related to both nutrition and exercise, with the kitchen paying an important role. Here are some of our tips for making those changes and losing a few pounds. When designing your new plan, it is important to consider what you need to do to lose FAT and not just weight. The term “yo-yo” diet exists for a reason. It refers to people first losing weight and then regaining the weight they lost plus more. So, what causes the regain? Typically, this results from losing lean body mass along with losing fat, thereby lowering your metabolic rate. This could result from doing too much “cardio” training and not enough weight training or from inadequate nutrition during a weight loss period. So how do we target fat loss?

Protein works because it ensures a higher level of satiety after a meal, prevents the loss of lean body mass and creates a higher “thermic” effect, meaning that the body burns more calories while processing proteins than other foods. It is also important to eat lots of leafy greens and to take a high quality multi-vitamin. Consider eating 2 servings of vegetables with a meal and reducing carbohydrates to a proper portion size. Healthy Habits for a Better Lifestyle Regardless of whether you want to lose some weight or just feel more energized and in better shape for summer, there are a number of habits that can be implemented to help. Be sure to exercise 30 minutes per day most days. Do a variety of exercises of both low and high intensity and vary the type of workout you are doing. Get enough sleep. Sleep allows the body to recover and restore itself. When you don’t get enough sleep, the body can produce stress hormones that have been shown to have a correlation with a gain in belly fat. Join others that have the same goal. Join a program such as “The Highpark Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge” to get coaching, motivation and to be part of a group of people working towards a common goal. torontohighpark@snapfitness.com

BOOK REVIEW

MARCH'S BOOK SUGGESTION

granted scholarship to university so that she can leave town for a better future. Carl: the town’s hockey-hopeful from a wealthy family is predicted that he’ll be drafted to one of the major NHL teams but in order to do so he must graduate high school. Sonja agrees to tutor him because she needs the money, and so begins the story of Sonja & Carl: a novel. Carl is drafted to the Boston Bruins while Sonja attends University of Toronto. Within his first year on the team, Carl suffers a concussion that brings the two together again. Their journey is an unconventional, slow burn romance but a beautiful one nonetheless.

SONJA & CARL: A NOVEL

I

Geared towards young adult readers, I found that this novel appeals to a wider audience. Although the story follows the characters from age 17-20, they are faced with several mature situations. The book touches on issues of poverty, wealth, death, love, and heartbreak, to name a few. It delves into the world of professional hockey, sports related injuries, and the pressure to get back in the game.

BY ALEXANDRIA WILLIAMS

’ve always appreciated a good storytelling, and in her first work, Canadian author Suzanne Hillier delivers just that with her debut novel Sonja & Carl: a novel.

The story revolves around Sonja Danychuk and Carl Helbig, two contrary high school students who are thrown together under unusual circumstances. In their small town of Davenport, Ontario, Sonja: an intelligent high school student from a very poor immigrant family, hopes to be

CAPTURINGBETTERPH TOS

In the making of this novel, Hillier, a retired lawyer, researched concussions related to hockey injuries, and interviewed several families of injured players who suffered irreversible damage at the hands of the sport. Sonja & Carl: a novel takes you on a ride that is as heart-warming as it is wrenching, with unexpected emotion at several turns. Featuring dynamic characters with rich history, I would recommend this to lovers of well-written fiction.

QUICK EDITS ost photographs will benefit from some quick basic editing after the photo has been taken. If using a smartphone, editing can often be done on the phone itself. Computer-based editing software can also be used. First, make sure that the photo is straight/level, especially for horizons, poles and other vertical edges. On some smartphones, leveling occurs automatically when you begin to crop the image. In photo 1, the photographer was so excited to capture the sunrise that he overlooked the slanted horizon. This was corrected on the smartphone for photo 2. Second, check to see whether the photo needs more or less light/ exposure. Most smartphones will have a way of adjusting exposure on the image. Third, crop the photo to discard elements that are distracting or not needed. It’s completely understandable that in the heat of capturing the moment (3) extraneous things can be left in the photo.
