WAR OF 1812:
ENGAGEMENT AT THE FORTY IN GRIMSBY Article by: Sue London
I
t’s hard to imagine 200 years ago the exchange of cannon fire rang loudly out over Lake Ontario. Ships armed with cannons and troops patrolled the shores off of Grimsby. On June 8th, 1813 a battle was fought at the foot of Forty Mile Creek. It would be known as the Engagement at the Forty. This engagement played a key role in the War of 1812. On this historical date American Forces retreating after the battle of Stoney Creek were bombarded by the British Flotilla under Sir James Lucas Yeo. Indians and groups of the 4th and 5th Regiments of the Lincoln Militia joined in the attack and created such confusion in the enemy ranks that they abandoned their position and retreated to Fort George. The American Forces left behind 500 tents, 100 stands of rifles, 140 barrels of flour and 70 wounded American soldiers who became prisoners of war. It is important, no matter which war, for us to never stop feeling the gratitude for the men and women who fought for our freedom. On May 26th, 2010 the Town of Grimsby hosted the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario for the launch of the first Canadian 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden, located at the mouth of Forty Creek, the historic site of the Engagement at the Forty. The location for this momentous Peace Garden is found at the foot of Elizabeth Street next to the Grimsby Pump House. Now as you sit in the Peace Garden you can take in picturesque and tranquil views and enjoy lasting wonderful memories thanks to the brave souls who came before us some 200 years earlier. This video received 12 International Awards and is now cataloged with the Library & Archives of Canada, the Archives of Ontario and US Library of Congress. Rai was the first program director for CFRB radio in Toronto. Rai hired Monty Hall as the first radio game show host. Brian’s son, Marc, is with the IATSE Union as a GRIP (stage hand) for major Toronto film productions. His grandson, Kyle, works with his father on these films on occasion. I have 2 American Eskimo dogs and 3 cats.

APPLE DUTCH BABY
his is a pancake on steroids! Perfect for a quick family brunch - one pan, one mess. Make Ahead Tip: Start with step 4 and continue until the end of cooking the apples.
When you are ready to serve, mix the batter together, put the apples back on the stove to reheat (about 3 minutes) and continue with step 5. Serves: 2-4
INGREDIENTS • 3/4 cup whole milk • 3 large eggs

School Life GRIMSBY
EDEN
Students have settled into their classes and are hard at work achieving their goals. We are in the midst of another semester of learning that will be enhanced by the myriad of opportunities available to our students inside and outside of the classroom.
In October, the Visual Arts Department provided an opportunity for Visual Arts students to visit the Ripley’s Aquarium in Toronto. Students documented and recorded visual information using observational drawing skills, which will serve as inspiration for a larger work to be created later on in the course.
SECONDARY SCHOOL
Fall sports have been very successful. Football is back at Grimsby and the team has been playing well and winning regularly. We are looking forward to more great competition for the remainder of the season. Our field hockey team has also had a very successful season and are off to SOSSA to complete with teams throughout Southern Ontario. Our athletes are also busy with volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf and rowing. Our Grade 9 students and senior student mentors spent three great days at Camp Eagle near Haliburton at the end of September. They experienced a wide variety of activities and got to know each other better. Our Eagles mentorship program will continue throughout the year. Each student in Grade 9 will be part of a group of students who meet regularly with a senior student mentor. This is one of the many ways we assist students with making successful transitions from Grade 8 to Grade 9. The Me to We Club is coordinating a We Scare Hunger Food Drive for the last two weeks of October to help keep the shelves filled at GBF. Our students like to give back to the community as often as possible. On November 1st, our Grade 9 students will be in the community with their parents at “Take Your Kids to Work Day” and our halls will be filled with the Grade 8 students from our Family of Schools as they experience “A day in the life of a Grade 9 student at GSS.” Then, on November 28th, they can bring their parents to tour the school and get answers to their questions at our Open House as they experience “High School in Action.” Student Council has been busy planning spirit activities, a pep rally, dances and the winter semi-formal. All of our groups are busy ensuring that everyone finds their place at GSS and has opportunities to explore their passions and achieve at the highest possible level. As always, diverse learning opportunities abound as we achieve success together!

HIGH SCHOOL
Avory Capes and Hannah Bourne are two visual arts students participating in the Visual Arts Enrichment program at Rodman Hall Art Centre, in partnership with YWCA Niagara. This program accompanies the current exhibition at Rodman Hall Art Centre, Material Girls, an exhibition by women artists about women taking up space. The intention is to assist young women in developing a positive sense of self and increase their resilience to the negative messages they often receive about their gender. The girls will make art based on selected works from the exhibition and be facilitated in discussion about what it means to them to “take up space” and how that idea relates to their experience as young women artists. The artworks created will be displayed in the Rodman Hall Art Centre Flex Space Gallery from November 17 to December 30. Part of the current exhibition on display in Eden hallways, supports developing skills in observational drawing. Students created a mixed media still life drawing, incorporating items that were essential to them. They considered how representation, meaning and the value we place on stuff can be explored to examine aspects of our own identity. The drama department is buzzing with activity: Grade 9/10 is exploring stage light design, and the senior class will soon be writing, directing and producing their own 20-minute mini-musicals. In order to learn the journalism art of play reviewing, both classes will be going to see ECTheatre’s The Welland Canal Play at the Performing Arts Center downtown on October 20. In extra-curricular news, The Miracle Worker is off to an exciting start with a perfectly cast ensemble featuring Natasha Chernishenko (Kate Keller), Jesse Klassen (Capt. Keller), Christian Roethling (James Keller), Maria Mudassin (Annie Sullivan), and Elizabeth Chernyak as the irascible and precocious Helen Keller. Supporting roles have also been filled with newcomers and some familiar faces. Special thanks go to the stage managers; Hanna Kelly and Christina Vamvakaris, and to set designers Ms. Cindy Biancaniello and Mr. Joe Caruso. The Miracle Worker will be performed April 13,14,20,21 at 7:00pm with in-school performances April 12 and 19. The Media Arts program is coming off a big year having won 2 short film contests in 2016-17: Frames and Short2 (Two Minute Shorts). We are preparing a team for this year’s Frames in November to be hosted at Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake and the team is hoping to put together another strong submission for a repeat win during this 12-hour day. Students have to use various filmmaking and story-telling skills as they are given a prompt the morning of and must submit a 6-minute film by 9 PM.
The sounds of music is filling the halls now that all performing ensembles and music classes are well underway. With auditions behind us, groups like Eclectic Tendencies has begun preparing for the year as well as Eden’s longest running ensemble, the Eden Chamber Choir. Vocal Music classes have completed performances in class and they are recorded and uploaded to www.edenarts.ca for public listening. The instrumental ensembles and classes are also letting the melodies flow. The Jazz Ensemble will be performing at the student council’s assembly in November and as a department, we are preparing for the Remembrance Day assembly which will feature some performances. The Music classes and extra-curricular ensembles are preparing for our Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 14. There will be an afternoon concert for a portion of the student body and there will also be an evening concert at 7 P.M. featuring all of the hard work of our music students. It will take place in our cafeteria/auditorium and tickets will be $5 for 13 and up at the door. It will be a fun celebration of music!

As we head towards the winter break, it is incredible to take a step back and reflect on some of the incredible things that BDSS students have accomplished so far in the first semester of 17/18.
GRADE 8 OPEN HOUSE Parents and families of students in Grade 8 in the BDSS family of schools (Senator Gibson, Twenty Valley, and Jacob Beam), or students looking to attend BDSS from other schools, are invited to attend our Grade 8 Open House on the evening of Wednesday, November 29th, 2017. BDSS will be open from 6-8pm on that evening to show off the school, its programs and students, and answer any questions incoming families may have. Grade 9 students at BDSS are always an exciting addition to our school community, and are very well supported, leading to great success.
SOCKTOBER BDSS students are supporting the Socktober initiative from Community Care of West Niagara. Community members are encouraged to donate new, warm, cozy socks for children, women and men to the donation bin in the BDSS office, or to Community Care of West Niagara directly. This organization works tirelessly to support families in our community – something BDSS values very much.

SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL The second month of classes at Blessed Trinity has been very busy and eventful. On October 13th, elections were held to choose the new Grade Nine Representative for Student Council. All of the Grade Nine students gathered in the gymnasium to hear the candidates’ speeches. The votes were then tallied and Luca DiPietro was elected by his peers to be the student representative for the Grade Nine students. Blessed Trinity’s Student Council consists of a team of students working together with teacher staff advisors to help improve all aspects of student life in the school community. These students are in charge of organizing school dances, fundraisers, pep rallies, and many other activities throughout the school year. On October 20th, Blessed Trinity students participated in a pep rally as a reward for meeting the fundraising goal for their annual Thundercard Fundraiser. The pep rally was organized by Student Council and featured music, performances, games, and speeches from a variety of students and staff. Students wore Blessed Trinity spirit wear to support all the extracurricular activities the school offers. Before the game began, the pep rally culminated with the student body chanting for the Senior Football Team as Mr. Di Pasquale energized the entire school. Students cheered for the Blessed Trinity Senior Boys’ Football team as they faced Notre Dame on their home field. In an exciting game, Blessed Trinity came up short and lost to the Fighting Irish. Fun was had by all, with food trucks on site for all spectators to enjoy. On October 26th, Student Council organized the annual Halloween Dance held at Blessed Trinity. Members of Student Council sold dance tickets on lunches and many students came for a night of fun, laughs and entertainment. The money from the ticket sales went into funding future school-run events and activities throughout the school. The music was provided by DJ and Producer duo C3ZNS (Patrick Alvarez and Daniel Mazur), who are Blessed Trinity students. The dance was a big success as the DJs rocked the night away! MUSIC PROGRAM & THE 8TH ANNUAL LAST CHANCE BAZAAR The Blessed Trinity Music Program has been hard at work holding auditions for soloists, restarting a plethora of ensembles for the year, and continuing to prepare for our upcoming Feeder School Tours and Christmas Concerts. Our very own Blessed Trinity Storm Drumline made appearances at the Niagara Grape and Wine Festival Parade and the grand opening of the new St. Martin’s School building on September 5th. Furthermore, the Program Chair of the Music Department, Ms. Maccaroni, is fostering her students’ creativity and passion with an exciting assignment called the ‘20 Time Initiative’. It is modeled after Google’s successful endeavour that allows 20% of work time to be devoted to a passion project of students’ choice. The projects include one

or more of the United Nation’s sustainable development goals. These projects foster creativity and passion, the foundation of music. Notably, our resident tuba player, Travis Tucker, is developing a fundraising project to secure a new tuba of which the school is in dire need. You are invited to come shopping at the 8th Annual Last Chance Bazaar taking place on Saturday November 25th and Sunday November 26th. This is our annual fundraiser in support of the Music Program at Blessed Trinity. The gymnasium will be transformed into a vibrant market with live entertainment from the music students. We hope to see you there. We welcome vendors with a variety of creative and unique items. The event runs from 10am to 3pm both days, with set up beginning at 8:30am on Saturday. THE THUNDER MAKE NOISE ON THE CROSS COUNTRY TRAILS AS NCAA CHAMPIONS, ZONE 4 OVERALL CHAMPIONS & ZONE 4 BOYS CHAMPIONS The cross country season began the first week of September with enormous enthusiasm and excitement. The sign-up list seemed lengthy, but the coaching staff never envisioned that every student trying out would make the final team roster. To their surprise 52 runners tried out; the largest number of athletes ever in our short history. The two coaches, Tony Gambale and Michelle Wilson began the training regimen and the season began with four practices per week. The students committed and bought into the program and were rewarded with a very successful first invitational of the year at Burgoyne Woods. Furthermore, as the season continued, the Brock University Invitational saw the Thunder make more noise with unbelievable finishes from all six teams. Finally, the NCAA championships saw Blessed Trinity win their second straight title. At the Zone 3 and 4 Championships, Blessed Trinity was unbelievable in capturing the overall team title and the boy’s title. Since the school’s inception, the boys had never won a team title and this year they worked very hard in stopping Sir Winston Churchill from getting their 10th straight title. The entire team moved on to SOSSA on October 26th at the Christie Conservation Area. The coaching staff is proud to announce that the Midget Boys were victorious and captured Blessed Trinity’s first ever Cross Country Divisional Championship. Good luck to the boys who are competing at OFSAA in Petawawa, on November 4th. Thank you to all our parents who support the team and our students who demonstrate high energy and skill. MEMORIAL FOREST & TRAIL DEDICATION Memorial Forest & Trail started with an idea several years ago. The Dedication took place at 2:30 pm, Saturday, October 1st at the Beamsville & District Lions Community Sports Park, at Fly Road and Mountain Streets in Beamsville. Mayor Sandra Easton unveiled the commemorative stone and plaque with the assistance of Mr. Jack Mountain. The Lions invite our entire community to commemorate significant events or people by financing the planting of a memorial tree. The project is the beneficiary of a significant contribution by the Mountain Family in memory of Lions Fred, David and James Mountain who, over three generations, gave 76 years of community service, 1939-2015. In partnership with the Town of Lincoln, the Lions are extremely proud of finally achieving the goal of establishing a Memorial Forest and Trail. Memorial Forest request applications are available from Beamsville & District Lions or the Club’s Secretary at colonist@cogeco.ca.
