Mayor’s Annual Citywide Food Drive #OneBagChallenge Did you know hungry neighbours in Mississauga visited a food bank over 207,000 times last year? Mississauga is a big city, but we come together to help each other, especially around the Thanksgiving season. I encourage you to take part in the Mayor’s Annual Citywide Food Drive Thanksgiving Campaign in support of The Mississauga Food Bank and the hungry neighbours in our community who need our help. Starting September 18th our goals are to raise $125,000 dollars and 225,000 pounds of food by October 13th - that would make it the food bank’s biggest Thanksgiving ever! I also invite the entire community to join us for our free Thanksgiving Campaign Launch Event featuring free food, fun family activities and live entertainment on Saturday, September 16th, from 1-4PM at the Streetsville Village Square. Don’t forget your non-perishable food donation! As part of the food drive campaign, I’m also issuing the One Bag Challenge. I've challenged 10 people - and all of you - to fill one bag or more with nutritious food. BULLYING IS CLOSER
THAN YOU THINK So what are the risk factors for children who are bullied? Generally, children have one or more of the following risk factors: they are perceived as different from their peers; are depressed or have low-self-esteem; do not get along well with others; and are perceived as weak or unable to defend themselves. Every parent is concerned about bullying. We read about bullying in papers, online and hear about it from other people. Some stories are hard to handle due to catastrophic endings and some are laughed at like harmless pranks. A survey reported that 55% of children were bullied, 90% were physically bullied at school and 70% did not seek any support. So what makes a bully? Research shows that children more likely to bully others are: aggressive or easily frustrated; they think badly of others; view violence in a positive way; and have difficulty following rules. It also shows that bullies tend to have less parental involvement.
What can we do? Given the above we need to increase self-esteem in children, engage as parents, reinforce good social skills and following of rules. Add teaching that violence is overall a bad thing and you can contribute to lowering and/or preventing bullying. Sports, competition and computers do not satisfy all these requirements. Classical Martial Arts can help your child improve all these factors from following rules to improving self-esteem, and teach them to defend themselves, if necessary. We teach that violence is not entertainment or a sport and that karate-do is an Art with much to gain for those who train hard.

Taking photos while standing is natural, but opportunities for better photos may occur when you change elevation.

GO LOW Go Low is especially important to get down to the right level for children and pets, for example. Compare photo 1, taken from a standing height, with photo 2, taken while kneeling down to the subject’s eye level. In some settings, getting below the level of the action, such as when performers are on stage, may produce a powerful perspective, as in photo 3.

GO HIGH Go High should also be considered, as long as it is safe! Everyday opportunities include balconies (photo 4, with special permission from Koerner Hall), benches, grandstands, ladders, steps and staircases. But always remember that your safety is the priority. Some events provide unique elevations for accredited media (photo 5, Estonian Folkdance Festival from a broadcast tower).

“ROUTINE”
R
outine can be described as a regular sequence of actions, a pattern or regimen. This sense of daily accountability and consistency one has to complete in order to perform tasks, activities or achieving goals. This “routine” or structured focus can be applied, either at the gym, one’s lifestyle, and even at work. This may vary during the off-season but in the end, the need to stay consistent is a priority. A routine can discipline someone to finding a continuum within themselves that will have them enjoy and want to come back. Also, since we as people generally have a routine to do in our life, there is no difference with having a routine at LvLUP. Finding a routine is a step towards finding success, which in turn will push you towards achieving your goals! As we enter the Fall season, to many “the routine” is something that may come to mind. Kids go back to school, cottage days are long gone and the days become shorter and colder. This is a great time to focus our energy back on what we might have put on hold over the summer, because let’s be honest: YOUR HEALTH MATTERS!
This September, make it a goal for yourself and your family to get back to that healthy consistent lifestyle. We can all keep some summer sun inside us as we go back to school, work and even workouts. We worked hard for that summer bod, why give up now? Holding ourselves accountable and getting back to a healthy routine not only in the gym but in all aspects of our lives is important. The influence we have on others is greater than we can imagine. With the right mindset and environment, as you would find at the LvLUP Studio, and with the support of your peers, friends and family, nothing is too far from being accomplished!

For the second year-in-a-row, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) introduced 15 teenaged girls to a potential career in fire service through Camp Ignite, which is a creative weeklong summer workshop that lasted from July 24 to 28.

Camp Ignite demonstrated to the girls that a career in firefighting service is possible by having them participate in some intensive training and real-world scenarios. “We are proud of what we started last year through Camp Ignite,” said Tim Beckett, Fire Chief, MFES. “We want all teenagers deciding on career options to understand that the fire service is an option for anyone willing to put in the work. This is a career worth fighting for.” The City’s first female firefighter and camp leader, Shelli Varela, offered campers access to an online training webinar. “The reason women aren’t applying to the fire department in big numbers is because of limiting beliefs,” said Varela. “We don’t often challenge that negative voice in our heads that tells us we can’t do something. Camp Ignite, combined with this new training will do just that.” 14

ART TRENDZ 01
Our group began in 2016, after four of us thought about starting it for a few years. We wanted a group where we could support each other, talk about art, learn, drink tea, have fun, and maybe eventually figure out if we could have a show somewhere. From there, we thought about different people we could invite. We met great people in classes and even got together to paint in the VAM studio. It all started to blossom from there! We now have 14 artists from all kinds of disciplines, such as watercolours, teachers, writing, photography, acrylics, oil, printmaking, representational/abstract, and collage. Some of us have been doing art all our lives and others have come to it later on, sometimes after the occurrence of a major life event. A few of us have a Master’s Degree in the arts, some members are graphic designers, while others are free spirits and great experimenters. Our group is wonderfully Canadian! We have artists who were born in Africa, India, Pakistan, the USA, and Canada. Many have lived in numerous other countries along the way, which brings a countless number of insights and depth of experience to the group. We also represent most of the great faiths of the world. Our group is very spiritual and we find what connects us, rather than divides. We all share a great love of art and spend a lot of time to talk about how it impacts our creations, food, and lives together. We are having out first group show together, at the Visual Arts Centre, in Riverwood, Mississauga. The opening reception is on September 29th at 6:30 pm. We’d love to see you there! Regards,

Port Credit Buskerfest celebrated its 12th year with an opening show on Friday, Aug. 18 with Aliens. The highly successful 3-day event ran from August 18-20 and boasted world wide international street performers such as acrobats, daredevils, high-energy circus shows and eccentric roving characters. This great event kept everyone of all ages entertained all weekend long. A big thank you to all the organizers, sponsors, volunteers and performers.

A full-bodied red wine, a Cabernet or Cabernet blend, Shiraz or even a Port, are good partners for aged Cheddars, Gouda, Gruyère, Pecorino or Manchego. So many cheeses, so many wines!
STARTING WITH THE WHITES A sparkling wine, particularly given the occasion, would serve doubleduty as a versatile wine to pair with a variety of cheeses, as well as offer a celebratory note. Dry sparkling wines pair nicely with double or triple cream cheeses such as Brie and Camembert and also match well with medium intensity blue cheeses such as Gorgonzola Dolce, one of our favorites! Their versatility extends further to hard aged cheeses such as the Parmigiano-Reggiano or Piave. Other white wines to include would be Sauvignon Blanc and/or an Albarino for something a little different, both aromatic, dry and crisp, both great with goat’s milk cheeses.

The sounds and smells of the islands could be found at Lakeside Park in Clarkson as it hosted Mississauga’s first CanadianJamaican music festival, CanJam, on Saturday, August 5th. You could savour authentic Caribbean cuisine as well as traditional Canadian fare, shop the many vendors, get your face painted and join in on some interactive games. However, the best part was the music as young and old danced wherever they were. It was a wonderful day to spend outdoors with the whole family.

RIDERS AGAINST
HUNGER The seventh annual Riders Against Hunger was held on Saturday, August 19th. The event was a 4-hour poker-style run, where participants were treated to gift bags and a free breakfast. The ride began around 9 am and afterwards runners were treated to a lunch prepared by Eden Food for Change’s Chef. People were also able to bid on auction items, enjoy live music and receive prizes.

From August 24th to the 27th, the ORC hosted the Birmingham Wheelchair Tennis Classic. This competition featured defending Champion and Paralympic gold medalist, Japan’s Shingo Kuneida as well as 35 other players who all displayed their skills at this top-tier ITF Services 1 event.

Sunny Days Camp gives kids with Epilepsy and their siblings a chance to participate in a camp that lets them have fun in a safe environment. On Thursday, August 23rd families gathered in the basement of Trinity Church in Port Credit for the Family BBQ Day where everyone enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings. After lunch the kids put on an awesome talent show. There was lots of laughter, smiles and hugs.

On Sunday, August 27th there was a sea of yellow as hundreds of participants took part in the 6th Annual Steps to End Violence Against Women Walk Interim Place at J.C. Saddington Park in Port Credit. A vigil was held for the 30 women who lost their lives in Peel due to gender-based violence in the past 10 years. Dignitaries, Peel police, friends, families and the community came together to show their commitment to ending violence against women and girls in Peel.
